Re: [MBZ] Uh oh
It will click when power is applied. If not, and it's the Bosch rotary pump, the armature has separated from the solenoid. I think that is the problem with my Volvo -- ran poorly for a while then refused to start, no fuel delivery. Pull in and check that it pops open and stays open when power is applied. If not, it's dead and so is the engine! If it leaves the valve behind when you take it off, you know what happened. Re: [MBZ] OT printers
First I would attempt to print. I've been surprised before. If it's clogged, those printers typically have a removable head. Get some bulk ink and refillable cartridges (this will cost less than new carts from the official source), remove the printhead, and apply some diluted Windex or 409 to the seats. You should be able to use some paper towels under the printhead to draw ink out, and you can buy cleaning syringes that have a fitting to cover the filter so you can GENTLY force dilute windex or other cleaning fluid through. Sitting it overnight on a pad of paper toweling soaked in windex and water usually frees up the dried ink in the head if you also soak the top. I've revived quite a few, including a decade old R800 that was totally dried out with pigment ink in it. Took a while, but it works well enough now to print exhibition quality prints. Very likely it's either out of fuel or you have a badly leaking line. timing belt would make a lot of noise when it went as the valves hit the pistons. Re: [MBZ] On my son the mechanic
I had the same problem with two Quantum lawn mower engines. Seems as they age the safety brake cable that also runs the cut-off stretches a bit (and is non-adjustable, for obvious reasons) and the cut-off won't open to let it run. Nearly drove me nuts finding it, as it was intermittant most of the time until it just flat quit. Worst part was it would suddenly not start hot after emptying the bag. Got one fixed, need to check the other (it's my trim mower). Wonky wires cause all sorts of trouble. Re: [MBZ] W123 parts
My brother had the same experience this spring when some idiot pulled out in front of my niece and ripped the left headlight and fender up on the 300E. Initial offer was $1600 and dumpster the car, my brother vigorously objected, and they eventually admitted a comparable car in similar condition (very nice, fairly low milage) was much higher. They could only find a single example for sale nation wide at the time, in Califormia, for $6500. Finally cut him a check for $3000 and he fixed it himself, no salvage title (which they insisted they could issue. I don't think so, the State of Indiana issues tittles here). Fight the bastards. I personally think issuing lowball offers of insurance payments when the company is covering an insured at fault should result in s substantial jail time and large fine fraud felony conviction, but the insurance industry obviously has the ear of legislators. Re: [MBZ] W123 parts
Kelley Blue Book on-line is a good resource -- they list a 1987 300E as retailing between $4000 and $9500 depending on condition, and in a case of accident damage they owe you the RETAIL (replacement) cost, not the WHOLESALE (trade-in) value of the car, since their insured damaged YOUR car through no fault of your own. They try that dodge too. Offered me $1500 for my 300D eight years ago when some dimbulb ran a stop light and totaled it. I laughed, retail was 4-6 and it has gone UP since then -- highly desirable car and limited supply. Most auto adjusters are clueless about the value of a Benz, they rarely encounter one, it's almost exclusively Detroit of Japanese disposable cars. And I guess most people don't care if they are getting screwed, or they would do something about it. Re: [MBZ] OT-ish Trans flush.
If you take a neglected tranny with ancient non-synthetic oil in it and flush it with fresh synthetic fluid, it's possible to remove enough varnish from the valve body that shifting problems arise. Also, in the 70's, synthetic oils didn't have enough seal swelling material in them, and rubber seals saturated with mineral oils could shrink when the fluid was changed, resulting in failure. This particular issue was addressed when I was in high school, shouldn't be a problem now. The only other issue would be a bunch of scale collected all of the the tranny that comes loose with the synthetic, clogging the filter and causing issues. Easily addressed by changing the filter again. Otherwise, if the dirt and varnish is all that keeps the tranny working, it's shot anyway. Ethanol can cause trouble with some rubber seals and plastic parts, but the issue should have been addressed by now. Ethanol has been used in gasoline for a couple decades, after all. Re: [MBZ] Today's cheap home brew Find
Lol, I've been home brewing for a couple decades now. You can indeed make decent beer at much less cost that the main line brews bought at the liquor store, and you can make things that were once unobtainable. In the last twenty years, the quality of microbrewery beer has increased quite a bit, but I still don't like super hoppy beer, so I make the stuff I do like, such as the recent Honey Blonde Ale that is getting rave reviews -- with honey from my own hives to boot. It's a great hobby, and not all that expensive once you get the basic gear. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com All posts are the result of individual contributors and as such, those individuals are responsible for the content of the post. Re: [MBZ] W124 Lower Control Arms and Ball joints - cost comparison
Lower control arms come with new bushings and new ball joints, so it's just a swap complete. Have to do a front end alignment in either case if you replace the bushings, ball joints usually not. Labor is about the same, it only take a couple minutes to pop the bushings and ball joints in and out with the control arm out of the car. Re: [MBZ] 1984 500SEL - HELP!!
The leaking points are: fuel distributor to throttle body boot (buried on that car, you have to remove the manifold I think, but you have to anyway, see point #2) seals between intake manifold halves (this is an issue for all the V8s of that design type) Idle control valve hoses Injector seals Injector holder seals (bet you didn't even know they existed, eh?). On the M103 there is a plastic sleeve the injector fits into, and they have an o-ring in a slot on the outside to seal with the manifold. They go bad, and replacing the injector seals doesn't fix the issue. Typically all these must be replaced together, so its better to pull the manifold and do it all at once. The throttle body to fuel distributor boot bolts to the fuel distributor, so it all has to come out. Makes a big improvement in running and throttle response when you get it all sealed up. Another point to check is a sticky fuel distributor air flap pivot or plunger seal. If the flap does not move very freely with light pressure and spring back up to the idle stop by itself if depressed, you need to clean it and maybe pull the plunger and clean that. Once in a while the plunger seal gets leaky or drags too much, in either case mixture control is erratic and you get running problems. Re: [MBZ] Branching out in the MB family
Do not expect to take long trips in a Smart -- my brother's BIL drove one from Karlsruhe to Berlin a few years ago just to see. He took the train home, those tiny tires and very short wheelbase result in constant jouncing. If it's miserable on a short trip (by American standards) it's too bouncy for me to drive to work! If it will never have to stand in for a real car, it's probably fine. You will be disappointed with the milage though, they are NOT light. Re: [MBZ] OT: The 10 most corrupt states in the U.S.
Rate of convictions is probably a good predictor of number of corruption events. In a really bad situation, there may be no enforecement, which would lower the rate, but I suspect most of these are state vs county or Feds vs State convictions, so the logic holds. Re: [MBZ] more on valve adjustment
Repeat the job in a few thousand miles -- when they are tight, carbon builds up on the valve stems, and gives you a false setting. As the carbon wears off with the added clearance, they go tight again and still don't seal. If they go tight in a few thousand miles, set them at bit loose and see what happens in a few thousand -- often the engine runs much better as the valves begin to seat properly. Re: [MBZ] Similar Note - my 91 300D runing warmer - Time for Burping??
Quick and dirty prime is to remove the pressure cap, squeeze the upper radiator hose flat, then crimp the small vent line to the expansion tank shut and release the upper hose. This will pull coolant through the lower radiator hose and heater core back into the head. If you have a bubble, the level in the tank will go down and stay down. Repeat, adding coolant as necessary, until the coolant just sloshes around and the expansion tank doesn't go empty. Fill to the middle line on the tank. If you did not test the thermostat before you put it in, remember that occasionally you do get a dead one in the new box Peter ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com All posts are the result of individual contributors and as such, those individuals are responsible for the content of the post.
