I wonder if you have to worry about rust on this car since it is located so
close to the ocean. My sister lives just North of Charlestown and there is a
lot of work to protect things from the salt mist in the air.

Just got a new iPad Pro and was wanting to add MS Outlook or similar for my
current email service. I am currently using it on my desktop but when I
tried to add on the iPad it said I need to sign-in my business or personal
account. If I personal account, it should be under my primary email account
which is embarqmail. Not sure where to go from here unless there is another
apple email app that would allow sub-directory's and rules to move emails to
those directories.

Any suggestion would be appreciated.

I have no idea about value but be sure to keep in mind your winning bid it just
the start, copart has very high auction fees that most of the time put the
total price well above what it is worth.

I finally got the lug bolts off the S550. The chrome cap on one came off. They
were all torqued to about 500ftlbs. Then the wheel was welded to the hub. I
managed to get a stubby flat screwdriver in between the back of the wheel and
the hub and beat on it enough in the small space inside the wheel spokes to
finally pop it loose.

So then I take a look at the wheel speed sensor and lo it was gone. The bolt
was there but the whole sensor was gone. Not plugged in. I guess that’s why
there’s a ESP ABS code on that wheel. I know I did not do this. Maybe someone
jacked it at the auction yard or where I got it. Who knows. I also know I had
ordered the part some time ago and it was in the car on the passenger floor. So
I go to get it and it’s nowhere to be found. The bag it was in is there but no
part. WTF.

I am 99% certain I ordered the part. I also recall opening it and looking at it
and then looking up a vid on how to replace it. I didn’t do it at that time for
whatever reasons. I also remember moving it around. I looked everywhere in the
car. I feel like I am insane, have dementia, have confabulated the whole thing,
or something. And why the one that should be on the car was missing is most
curious too.

Well I guess I need to order (another) one. And some new lug bolts too. Sigh.

My LG dryer has had a thumping noise since I bought it. It was a sales floor
model so I got a good price on it. Always meant to open it up and see what was
making the noise, but years later it's still running fine and hasn't gotten any
worse, so maybe they just sound like that.

It has a steam function that no longer works. I have read that the water pump
for the steam generator is prone to failure.

You'd think those Koreans would make better stuff. When they were called
Goldstar it was bulletproof. My Goldstar microwave still works after over three
decades of near-daily use.

This is 2 cars, the station wagon has about 330,000 miles on it , something
came loose and it leaked out all the oil,we had it towed and never messed
with it again, then we bought another one we loved it so much, just the
regular car version and our 16 year old daughter wrecked it 2 days ago.The
engine has 189,000 miles on it.These would be great parts cars.I don't want
strangers picking things out in my yard, you have to buy both and get them
out of our yard should have a solid motor, maybe even 2,
transmissions,seats,wheels,tires,it's all there,both 1985 models.

My house in Maine has a metal roof over the porch but asphalt over the rest.
Apparently the porch had cedar shakes and as they got soft a racoon started
making it's home in the porch through the soft shakes. The previous occupant
got his brother (the home owner) to put a tin roof on the porch.

The asphalt on the house is adequate for now, at some point I'll have a tin
roof put on. Fortunately in that area the Amish will do the job. They're fast
and way cheaper than what I'd been quoted down here.

My 2012 ML350 BT final electronic average was 33.4 MPG on 660 mile trip South.
Started on a full tank and made it to my destination without having to stop for

No way it averages 27, especially being a blue tec with the warranty done as

they assembled one sections are bolted together and then raised into

to do it as they are light and flimsy until multiple unites are bolted
together. I imagine U tube would be the place to see the assembly process.

That looks a lot like Charlestown SC after Hurricane Hugo. My Mother live in Mt
Pleasant just across the river and she lived in condo that were on the causeway
between Mt Pleasant and Sullivans Island ( a barrier island ). I went down to
help recover personal stuff after the storm. There were boats in her parking
lot and the pivoting bridge was off it mount hanging into the canal. High Water
mark was 7-8 feet at the storage locker at ground level. It took a year and a
half before she could move back into here place. She moved about a year later
further away from the coast.

This is a very nice looking car, but as a diesel I would check that the oil
cooler seals aren't leaking, oil stain engine pan guard ( slide 155) and
what is the condition of the crank case vent assembly. If it is worn out
will let excess oil into the intake air stream and then combine EGR gases
and make a soggy mess. Been there done that.

I bought one from Costco. I was impressed with the ball bearings, but it was
missing a key. I negotiated a discount because of the key. The plus was that
the company (Gladiator?) was part of Whirlpool, so they sent me a free key. The
minus is that the thickness of the sheet metal is mostly paint, so dings easily.

I also have an old Craftsman that I found cheap on CL. Good Stuff.

2022-09-03 Thread Robert Massmann via Mercedes
Reminds me of my BMW X3 I had; the sunroof was glued shut. Looked at ebay
prices and they were 750-1500. I ended up getting a replacement from a
pick-in-pull yard on a 50% off day. I think I only paid 60-70 dollars for the
whole thing. Had to ask for help to get it out of the car and to load it into
the van. The best thing about the one I got was it was a replacement, so it was
fairly new. Yes it was a workout and hot a hell that day, but in the end was
well worth effort, to me at least.

When I was buy parts for my oil cooler repair and OE trailer hitch most of the
time shipping was a flat $35. No matter if it was a single part or multiple
parts. I also was a bit disappointed that not more parts for a certain area
were limited and had to go somewhere else to find the seal number I needed.
There are many dealerships that have web part purchase venues and purchase
price does vary between dealerships. Some of my part purchases came from a
Mercedes dealer in Akron, Ohio, they actually called for clarification on a
superseded part.

I would probably buy a lot more dealer parts if my dealer was not a rip off.
The shipping from the online places usually ends up being too much.

I find it real hard to believe it really got that mileage. Would be real

Re: [MBZ] First Long Trip in 2012 ML-350 BT

2022-08-29 Thread Robert Massmann via Mercedes
Kaleb,

Copy of my gas tracking spread sheet is below. Moving average is total miles
driven divided by total fuel consumed. Will slowly go lower as more miles are
driven. The displayed MPG didn’t occur until the very end of the trip. The
drive down b the numbers was 32.36 (656/20.27). drive home was 31.27
(722/23.09). So we shall see as time goes on. Please note that I cleaned the
accumulated soot from air path when I serviced the oil cooler seals and
replaced the leaky PCV assembly.

I find it real hard to believe it really got that mileage. Would be real
curious what it is hand calculated. About the best our GL will get us around
22-23 and it’s not bluetec. A e class CDI might get that. I have heard those
trip computers are sometimes optimistic. If it really did get that mileage that
would be amazing. Hopefully it did and I am wrong.

[MBZ] First Long Trip in 2012 ML-350 BT

2022-08-28 Thread Robert Massmann via Mercedes
Well I took my first real long trip in my newish ML that I got back in
January. Drove it down to Mt. Pleasant, SC outside of Charlestown from the
Northeast side of Cincinnati. Distance was approximately 670 miles. I was
amazed that the average miles per gallon displayed was 35.6 MPG, with over a
21 gallon tank I didn't have to stop for fuel and could go an estimated
80-90 miles before having to refill the tank. Used cruise control most of
the time with a top cruise speed of 73 MPH. The ride and drive was very easy
in the ML, ride it still a bit stiff but comfortable and a lot more
comfortable than the 2004 BMW X3 that I had. The seats aren't as nice as
what is in my 2002 BMW 5 series. I wonder if there are better seats in the
GL series that could be swapped into the ML.

Just thought this would be an interesting tidbit.

Re: [MBZ] Trailer adapters

2022-08-15 Thread Robert Massmann via Mercedes
One of the things you get with the Mercedes trailer package is modification of
suspension and stability systems software to help handle the heavier trailer
load. It also modifies the rear car detection since you have added a trailer.
All of this is automatic when the car detects the trail addition. I do not tow
a heavy trailer currently but may in the future. There is also a change to the
rear camera view, when you select trailer mode to help align trailer and hitch
for hookup.

When I put the tow hitch on my Volvo, I bought a separate light controller for
the trailer lights. It plugs into the car's factory wiring harness for the
taillights, so no cutting or splicing wires, and has an independent power
connection. It doesn't appreciably change the load on the car's lighting, so
the "bulb-out" nannies are happy, and it handles LED or incandescent trailers
fine as it's just supplying 12v signals. Mine has a 4-pin flat connector for
the trailer.

I actually had, about $1000 dollars left after I bought the car back and made
full repairs. Junk yard replacement parts which the insurance company would't
permit? Insurance company was AAA at the time. Will see if I can find a photo

2022-07-30 Thread Robert Massmann via Mercedes
Below is the link that I posted to the MBWORLD forum under the 166 model
Mercedes. Many things need to be removed to get to the oil cooler seals,
fuel filter, engine air filters, air inlet air plenum to turbo, turbo to
turbo cooler pipe, turbo, turbo stand, left and right intake plenums, flap
control servo, and throttle body at the front of the engine. Oh, you also
have to drain engine coolant as well. Part cost wasn't too bad 200-250 for
replace parts. I the Mercedes quote was $3500. All work for the seals was
completed from the top and some sound/heat shielding needed to be removed
for better access to allow disconnecting the turbo from engine exhaust
piping.

I believe a list member just did an oil cooler job on an SUV. Robert maybe?
On the R van looking thing, it would probably suck. Probably need to drop
the engine out the bottom and do it that way.

Because of rust formation in the piston cylinder housing. It is a very close
fit and rust can propagate to point that the piston will be frozen in place
and no matter how much pressure you put on it will not move. Not a fun

Took it out for a drive, everything works, even got the trans switch to go to S
from W it was stuck in. No more limp mode, no more insistent errors!!! ESP was
causing limp mode. AC BLOWS ICE COLD!!!

Still getting an error on the instrument panel for ABC, was throwing 2 codes
for sensing load and something else but it is working ok so I’ll have to see
what is unhappy. Probably have to put the fancy computer on it to figure out if
it’s some particular module or sensor. One corner looks a bit low so maybe a
sensor is not working.

So anyway a free fix is a good fix! Getting there with simple fixes. And the
car is VERY fun! YAY!!!

Re: [MBZ] 02CL500 adventures

2022-07-15 Thread Robert Massmann via Mercedes
I have fun and enjoy the challenges of getting a car back on the road. Have and
82 300D that I bought off of Ebay and completed and engine swap, engine came
with the car. And had to complete an engine swap on my vehicle back up a 2002
BMW 525i sedan, nice riding car, but showing its age.

Good luck with your endeavor!

Car has only 106kmi. I did a scan on it, nothing too serious popped up except
as below with ESP. Running OK but in trans limp mode so will need to get the
ESP sorted.

Cleaned the car up, it was not too bad at all, a good vacuuming and wash got it
looking better. Will need a good paint buffing. Interior pretty clean, leather
almost all quite good, one tear in the driver seat, will probably scrub the
carpets at some point. Console lid release is broken, will have to sort that
out. Plastic does not hold up well. It has the seats that the bottom goes
forward and makes a lot longer leg support, very comfortable. The lumbar bags
aren't working which I think is a common failure but could be a fuse or
something. Not critical but would be nice to have.

Found a loose/bad power connection at the power point in the passenger
footwell, got that organized so most of the power funkiness has been sorted out
but there might still be some niggling issues, more to come. Battery is not
draining now so that is encouraging. The trunk lid release switch works
intermittently as does the auto-lowering/raising windows when the door is
opened and closed. Windows work though. I have not been through all the fuses
yet.

Hydraulic suspension pumps now and holds, probably needed some exercising to
clear out any goobers in the lines and struts, so that is good. Still getting
ABC error but that might go away, not clear why it should be there. I might be
able to clear it.

Has ABS and ESP errors which might be due to a bad module or connection, will
take a look at that. Might have another module, in any case they are available
on eBay for $35 or so.

Fun times on a very cool complicated German car! Not bad for $1500 now that I
have some of the issues sorted and the remaining ESP thing doesn't look too bad.

The package included a second engine, which I installed and then started
driving, although I seem to remember that the transmission had to be replaced
as well. I suppose one of these days I should try and rebuild the original
engine and put it back in the car it came from. Retired, but that doesn’t
really mean I have the time to put that in motion at the moment.

Re: [MBZ] $6K Repair or Different Vehicle

2022-03-18 Thread Robert Massmann via Mercedes
I bought a 2002 BMW 525i from a charity auction that wasn’t too far away,
couldn’t inspect before purchase. Paid $900 for it, 600 for the car and 300 to
the charity. Got it home and found that the engine had a coolant leak into the
oil. Car had been sitting about 6 months, so the engine was toasted, still
turned, cam was quite rusted too. Bought a running replacement engine for $600
plus $100 for shipping. Engine was sold as running, when it entered the yard.
Engine hasn’t missed a beat since I got it on the road. Yes it was an effort,
but it was more a test to see what I could do and it has been a very
comfortable ride. Have driven it about 45,000 mile since the engine swap over
the last 5 years.

I believe I would do it again if I had too. Just finished the oil cooler seal
repair on my 2012 ML350 Bluetec, which was a scary thing to start on my nicest
car.

What would it cost if you repaired it yourself? Timing chain does not

sound impossible. How hard is it to do the balance shaft?

I was a bit disappointed in FedEx. I was expecting a package delivery on
Friday, which didn't arrive. Received notice that it would be delivered on
Saturday, did not get delivered! It now is Monday, with a new notification
of it to be delivered today by 8:00 pm. It wouldn't be so bad but for some
reason it is indicating that a signature is required?

Re: [MBZ] Oil Cooler Leak Repair ( 2012 ML350 Bluetec )

2022-02-24 Thread Robert Massmann via Mercedes
Andrew,

It will be interesting to see what they would say. My ML350 BT is covered by an
extended warranty due pollution control settlement agreed upon by the EPA and
Justice Dept . Any Bluetec diesel from 2009-2016 (OM 642 & OM 651) models are
covered by the extended warranty, link to the warranty document is below. My ML
350 had the pollution control updates completed just last December. So all the
pollution control equipment will be covered for (4) years or 48,000 miles,
whichever occurs first. It was interesting, I went back and reviewed the CARFAX
report and there was now mention of the pollution control update when it was
serviced at a Mercedes dealer in Kentucky just before it was put up for sale by
Jeff Wyler outside Cincinnati.

It should be interesting to see, if I can get reimbursed for the CCV valve (
$160 item ) that I am replacing during my oil cooler leak fix, it is the last
item in the list that is covered by the extended warranty.

Here are more photos of repair progress. I am currently in the cleaning
process oil and soot buildup in the air intakes and mixer assembly after the

the soot from the intake ports. I will be trying to clean intake manifolds

the same holes so I have them in their correct location.

Well all I am in the process of trying to change the seals on my Ml 350 BT.
I am getting a good feel for why this is such and expensive repair job with
limited access and the number of parts that need to be removed. In the
process I have had to remove the air control assembly that delivers the
intercooled air to the intake manifold. There is a larger amount of soot
buildup the second photo came from the inlet of the intake manifold that I
could reach and haven’t touched the assembly that is shown in photo 1. I did
see some oil in the inlet to the turbo intake side as well as the transferee
tube to the intercooler. May just replace crankcase ventilation valve while
I have things apart. The exterior of this valve is quite oily. Car has about
87K miles on it. I have three more screws to remove before I can remove the
turbo, one of which I can not see.

2022-02-16 Thread Robert Massmann via Mercedes
I have working on it for about 4 days and may spend 4-5 hours each day.
Spent about 2 hours to get one exhaust to manifold bolts out. I believe the
tip threads were rusted being exposed to nature, slowly worked it out
without braking it. Have one more screw before I can lift the turbo out. But
need to buy an extended Torx to get to it. The only place this soot or what
ever it is, is coming fro the crankcase vent valve EGR system. I guess it is
a mixture?

I think I should replace it ( PCV ) valve assembly?

[MBZ] New ML350 Bluetec and Cold Starting

2022-01-22 Thread Robert Massmann via Mercedes
Well is was ‘9’ this morning and I had the new ML sitting outside. It has
warmed to 15 and I decided to see how it would start. It may have glowed a
little longer, but started just fine. I was wonder though how long I should
have it ideal before I start do driving it? I have had very cold starts with my
95 E300D, but it warming it up was more about the getting the windshield clear
and defrosted than getting the engine up to a safe driving temperature.

Re: [MBZ] Looking for My next Mercedes

2022-01-18 Thread Robert Massmann via Mercedes
Well I had my new ML350 health checked today at the Mercedes dealer. On bad
thing was found and I didn't really see it when I looked at the
undercarriage. They say the seals of the oil cooler is leaking and is
draining down the side of the engine to the undercarriage panels. I have
looked at several YOUTUBE videos and it is a bit of work to complete. The
oil cooler is located in the vee between the heads and many things on top of
the engine need to be removed down to the 2 intake manifolds. Apparently
this a weak point and the oil seal begin to flatten and leak due the higher
operating temperature of the engine. So I will not be doing any long trips
until this gets fixed. Mercedes wants $3600 do complete the repair, seals
are only very small part of the cost. Between completing and engine swap on
BMW 5 series and changing a starter on BMW X3 which required disconnecting
the intake manifold, and replacing head gaskets, I think I should be able to
complete the repair. Not the thing I wanted to hear, but better to know
thank not to?

If the car doesn’t have towing setup you will have to try to add the nanny
and get a new controller happy. It is not easy. The brake and stability
controllers and the lights will not be happy without the tow nanny.

I would like to get a hitch on it to tow our popup camper. The trailer
wiring is going to be an issue. The computer that controls the lighting
(EVERYTHING is controlled by a computer on that SUV) is not going to like
any changes. It would be best to inquire about that on the main list. I
know NOTHING about Mercedes newer than 2008 or so. Geeze. The caps look

Re: [MBZ] Looking for My next Mercedes

2022-01-15 Thread Robert Massmann via Mercedes
All I had a very nice ride home, but was a bit nervous drive my brand new car
in track. The new car does have the vehicle collision avoidance warning
indication for changing lanes which is nice. It has navigation, heated seats,
retractable side mirrors, and other things that I have not discovered yet. The
bad news is NO operators manual. It is no where to be found, unless it has a
special storage compartment that I haven’t found. I did find a PDF copy of it
on MBUSA web site, I have downloaded and am starting to review. Will let you
know how things are going after I have driven it for awhile. Have schedule a
general car inspection at our local Mercedes dealer to make sure there are no
issue with the car, fingers crossed. This car requires DEF, so should be
interesting to see how often that needs to be refilled. Car has a little over
86,000 miles on it.

Hope all goes well?

Is there a class action suit against Mercedes relating to the Bluetec
vehicles in the USA?

The fellow that I had posted about a month or so ago in British Columbia
who was having all sorts of issues with his, has just received notice
that some of his issues will be addressed due to the settlement of a
class action suit in Canada.

He is not impressed and says he will likely not purchase any more Mercedes.

Maybe. Sometimes in a photo, shadows and reflections can look like dents --
that said, if you're shopping for 8-10 year old cars it is going to be rare
to find one without a ding or scratch somewhere.

Good question about the engine cover, maybe removed for the photo but
certainly would be a question for the seller.

It's a Blutec, so it has a DPF, I don't know if it's possible to evaluate
the condition of those but that would be my concern if everything else
checks out. If it got regular long-ish highway trips it probably had
adequate opportunity for the "regen" cycles to complete. If it was used
mostly for in-town, short trips I'd be more cautious.

Then you need to consider *your* driving routine. If this is a car that
will

mostly be driven short trips for shopping and work maybe diesel isn't the
best option. If you'll be doing regular longer fast highway runs, it could
be great.

I am starting to look for my next Mercedes as I had sold my 1995 E300D
because is was getting harder to maintain and had close to 500,000 miles.
I
am looking at the ML series 2014-2015. I would like to get back to a
diesel
car but it is not necessary. Just wondering what the better option would
be?
I do like to camp so it currently am towing small popup camper, but may
upgrade to larger enclosed trailer at some point. I only looked at one
vehicle thus far a 2015 ML350, it has less than 100,000 miles and has
most

of the options. They are asking 19,700 for it.

So if anyone have opinions on my search, please chime in. Not in a real
big
hurry, but would like to do something sooner than later.

I would trade or sell the 2004 BMW X3 that I am currently driving.

Re: [MBZ] Mercedes Near me

2021-12-10 Thread Robert Massmann via Mercedes
I completed an engine swap on a 2002 BMW 525i that I had bought in an
auction, replacement was sold as a running engine out of a 325 series car. I
guess, I got most everything done right. Have been driving it for at least 5
years now. No issues with the replacement engine. Previous engine had
coolant leak into the oil and the car sat for about 6 months, cam was badly
rusted on top.

Needs a new engine, would be lots of work to sort out what's in there,
and worse since you don't know what happened to it. Be easier to just
drop in a replacement if you could find one from a knacker. Price is
too high though for a car with a bad engine.

Re: [MBZ] The scam that is ebay

2021-12-01 Thread Robert Massmann via Mercedes

Kaleb,

Several years ago, I purchased a car from boatangel ministers, I was the
second highest bidder and the winning bidder reneged on the deal. The
sellers gave me and asked if I want to purchase the vehicle as the second
highest bidder. I am not sure what they did to accomplish this, but I ended
up with the car at my original bid amount. Just for your info, not sure how
things are handled these days.

So ran this ML again which ended last night at over $3k. Just like the
first time, no response from high bidder. It has not yet been 24 hours
but I am not holding my breath. After doing a little research on the
ebay forums, come to find out, in vehicle auctions the deadbeat bidder
does not even get an unpaid item strike as they consider these auctions
non binding. WTF? There is absolutely no way to hold these buyers
accountable at all. Not only that, you have to pay each time to relist
it. Maybe this is a sign I should just keep the thing, or maybe try a
listing instead of an auction.

Especially with ice. Did you see the pileup on I-35 in Fort Worth. It was a
real mess, 6 deaths!

Rolled back into Okie Acres a little while ago with the CD. After picking
it up Sunday I worked in Lubbock for the next couple of days and left
Wednesday morning. Most of the time I was there the temps were in the
70's. When we left of course there was freezing fog all the way thru west
texas. Temp never got over about 25 and on roads that are normally 80mpg
we were averaging about 60-65, so it took quite a while longer. We
stopped at the half way point for the night and finished the trip today.

That is sweet. I can make one, put it on Dropbox, Google drive, or Microsoft
cloud, and Bob's my uncle, no pun intended. BTW, are you an engineer?

Thank you!

Rick

I use an excell sheet to track my fuel and maintenance for each car I drive.
I have extra columns for keeping track of when I need to do several of the
regular maintenances as oil change and fuel and oil filters. I also track
miles per gallon trend total gallons used along total fuel purchases. See
attached graphics screen capture.

I use the written log book method.
Short of a car fire, it is always available and in the car.
I find the bound composition books [dollar store has them for a buck] works

Yes, I do not live far from there. Do not visit very often, but have been
there. It is only about 6 miles form my house. Originally lived in
Wilmington and move to my current address about 13 years ago. Love it out in
the country!

You’re not far from Fort Ancient, a park that we visited regularly when I
was a child. Lots of good memories there.

[MBZ] My first car

2021-02-02 Thread Robert Massmann via Mercedes
My first car was a 1968 Camaro, looked a lot like this on bring a trailer. Mine
had 327 V8 with factory four speed. Paint was a light metallic green. It also
had the SS detail package with factory gauge package. Bought it when I was in
the Navy in 1972. It had been wrenched at some point. Only sold it for about
2500. Would be worth a lot more now, if only I new. Replaced it with Mazda RX-3
wagon, because I was fly radio control gliders, which was kind of hard to
transport in two door coup.
