A 1979 280TE, NZ-new, 2 owners, auto-trans with ... wait for it... 50 K original miles on the clock. And the owners may be thinking of selling it. So in the even rarer event that SWMBO would agree to owning a second W123 estate, I'm all-atremble at the prospect of making an offer for it. But first I need wise counsel. Aside from the obvious differences (petrol = thirsty but gruntier - no more making written applications to overtake on the highway), how do the 280 TEs differ from my cherished 300TD? What kinds of problems are endemic to this breed? I noticed also that, at rest, this beauty rode a lot higher in the rear than my 205K mile wagon. Why would that be, do you think? Will the imminent replacement of my suspension struts jack my butt up too? Re: [MBZ] OT- Wireless networking
Ed, I have wired half my house with Cat 5E, Quad shield Coax and fibreoptics, I'm on cable with a Toshiba modem with a Uniden UPI 1868P as the router (VOIP 10 handset phone system), was using a Belkin router but it was dropping all the time. The phone router has not dropped once in 3 weeks. The router leads to a 24 channel switch with drops in most of the rooms. However getting to the 4th level is a challenge I don't want to take with hard wire so have just purchased a used Cisco Aironet 340 Series of wireless LAN that I had planned to plug into a channel on the switch and have wireless access...I guess I should asked if it would work before purchasing but now that the subject is being discussed with this setup work. Benz content just came in from cleaning up the garage; the pellet stove had it at 60 F on low great work weather. Need to pack heading to LA for a couple a days or so. It is actually one of my cars; she (daughter) transferred from Seattle to Portland. She now lives at home again when she not off flyingshe has the 95 E300D but was using the 300CD while I was servicing her carhence the damage. I did a search on autotrader and there are none for sale around here to use as a comparison. EBay has some currently listed up there in value of $4K + .I need to determine if I should get it fixed or not Did list it on craigslist at $3000 a while back but had no offersIt has 310,000 on it but starts easy and dead reliable. Hello everyone! Now that I have found some wonderful matching seats for my 300SD for a wonderful price (thanks dennis T), I was ready to tackle the project of rr-ing them. I couldn't move the seats forward to get at the rear bolts in the conventional way due to bad switches and bad drive cables in the case of the driver's seat. I had to use a 1/4 drive 3/8 9mm? socket to get under the runner and get a bite on them which I'm happy to say worked well although time consuming!! The driver's seat went in and since it worked ok, I was able to move the seat in the appropriate direction to line up the holes and install the bolts. It's now road ready, at least for the driver! I have to sit on the floor board until Dad and I tackle the passenger's side tomorrow hahahahaha! I got that seat out as well, but since the connector shell was broken, we've decided to solder the wires already in the connector to those on the seat using the color code. I was a bit disappointed and the seller would not permit a return so they have been wrapped up in my garage for two years. They are complete motors and all and heavier than heck. I know I'll be out some funds...actually have been out the money for a couple so its water under the bridgehad they been for an SEC, they were a heck of a deal.what do you think they are worth? The parts SD is a different one, the daily driver does not get driven much these days wife was driving the 300CE but now she driving the pick up. Thinking about putting the SD on Craigslist. Kevin, I'll be around most of the weekend although Friday may have to do a company job. I have a 1987 420 SEL don't know if it has the memory seats in it.the 300CE does but nobody uses them, don't even know if they work. Hi, Dennis. $200 for both of the seats is fair. I would like to compare them to those in your 300SD's to check the wiring. I remember my dad modifying a Cadillac seat to fit in our 1971 Buick Riviera. The seat had the power switches on the side where the Riviera had them in the arm rest. He took the switch out, covered the holes with a plate, and wired it to work with the switches in the door as the original seat did. Would this weekend be a good time to come to look at the seats? Kevin in Hillsboro Oregon 1983 300SD 284K miles, Ursula PS. I think it's got a warped rotor or two because when the brakes are applied, I can feel pulsation through the car. The pads are doing OK since there's no squeaking or grinding. It needs a few minor things such as a clip or two on the rear headliner panel around the rear dome light, some power seat switch knobs and some vacuum lock items (haven't torn it apart to see what's leaking yet but the pump does work). Re: [MBZ] converting a text file into a pdf
Kaleb, Don't know if this would work for you. I use a free program called Cutepdf it gets installed as a printer. Any text, picture, photograph or scanned item is printed to a file (you name it) that can be read by Acrobat reader or other pdf readers. Creating PDF files will take some of my BMP files from a Meg down to 50K for email etc. It can be downloaded free from http://www.cutepdf.com/Products/CutePDF/writer.asp You need to get the free converter as well. So if you scan an item it can be 'printed' to this program directly -- just select 'print' select cutepdf and it will do the rest. [MBZ] Engine quitting
Folks, The daughters new (to her) 1995 E300D has quit on her a couple of times, it left her stranded the other night. She thought she had run out of fuel although the gage said she had a bit under 1/2 a tank. She did not attempt to start it in case it was out of fuel. She returned to the vehicle the next day with 5 gallons of diesel poured it in the tank and it started immediately so it was not out of fuel. The gage proved accurate as I drained about 10 gals out of it. I replaced the tank screen, disassembled and cleaned the level sensor, replaced both fuel filters, filled the high pressure one with diesel purge, added 3 gallons of clean diesel to the tank. She drove into Woodland a mile or so away, filled the tank it took 20 gallons and on the way home it quit. She called me I drove down the hill to her, opened the stop knob on the high pressure filter a bit more it started and she drove home and up the steep hill to my place without an issue -- she does not trust the car at this stage. So where should the 'stop screw' be positioned at? I changed the overload (overvoltage) relay drove it in Italian fashion in the hills behind us never missed a beat, the cruise started working reliably for me however she tried it today and she said it was useless. It does have the Benz and an after market security system. Any thoughts, Dennis T -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. Re: [MBZ] Idiot Needle
Jim, You raise an interesting point regarding hot clearances. The crankshaft, engine block and bearings no doubt have different thermal expansion rates. I may be able to make the argument (need to get out some old books or google in this day) that the bearings (Babbitt type material) initially grow more rapidly than the bearing journal or block tightening the bearing clearance and the need for good lubrication when cold - isn't it claimed that's where the most wear takes place. I sure the engine design is for a particular clearance once the engine is thermally stable for durability, getting to that design temperature will be a trade off for wear noise etc. Just a thought to get you thinking on Sunday morning -beautiful day on the west side on the hills. I just went back and looked at it. Ebay posted this message: This listing (#46228400) has been removed or is no longer available. Please make sure you entered the right item number. I believe this auction was not getting a bid to the sellers liking and fake bidding occurred hence the ebay removal result. Dennis T -- No virus found in this outgoing message. I'm into it a conservative 80 hours of labor, and the expenses (including acquisition) are a hair under $1000. (Hmm, motor mounts, restoring the AC, and a CLA on the sunroof are still on the list. Maybe not so small. Sigh.) I doubt this is going to make much money for us. Nice looking car, though. That's why I want to drive it to Seattle. I guess the most important question I could ask you is: Did the new tumbler have the little bitty hole where a pin can be inserted in order to allow depression of the part that retracts to allow removal/installation? Yes I know once the key is turned to the correct position (and the tumbler is not installed yet) it can be depressed by hand, but once installed, there needs to be a way to make it depress so that the tumbler can be pulled out. That is what the hole for the pin is for. Does the one you installed have it? Thanks. -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. I ordered my VIN-cut key by simply calling the dealer, asking for it, and telling them the VIN. They required a photocopy of the title to be faxed (or mailed, or dropped off) to them. The key cost me $26. It came sooner than they promised - it came in around 5 days. They said they'd charge me shipping, but they did not. The quality of the key head is poor in that the metal of the key doesn't extend all the way into it, and as a result of my frantic twisting and turning of the key in my frozen up ignition, it broke. Yes, All the non-turbo's I have start in second, as does my 1989 300CE as does my 1987 420SEL. The turbo's 300 CD, D SD I have all start in first gear and they have to climb out of the driveway when cold, when hot (normal operating temperature) climbing the drive in second is no problem. I did read in my operator's manual for the 300CE second gear starts were due to emissions. Luther - If you are serious take a really close look first. Trunk lid rust is a typical 107 trait. That rust looks pretty advanced. Road dirt gets trapped between the outer skin and the inner structure and absorbs moisture, causing rust out. Best to just replace the trunk lid. Mine has been fixed twice and it starting to rust again. I think a new lid is about $500 then it needs painting. I couldn't tell for sure but it looks like the muffler has been removed and replaced with a section of pipe. Rear bumper cover skin is about $130 plus installation. Low mileage, wonder if the odometer has been tweaked? Did the '78s still have the cats in the engine compartment or was '77 the last year for that? Wood is in very poor shape. No mention of shape of drop top. No mention if A/C works or if servo is good. I would think that current bid is not too far off. 10K sounds really high to me. Don't know about your neck of the woods but the $15K they say it is worth is more like the price of some lesser 560 SLs here in SoCal. Don, Thanks, the 1987 Wagon that was on Craiglist in Portland Oregon for $1895 the other day is available again. The purchaser reports he changed the glow plugs and it starts instantly now. He purchased it for his girlfriend to use for her real estate business but she does not like it. Hates diesel and says it does not accelerate satisfactory for her and would rather have a MLxxx. He asked for his money back, which the original owner said no way a deals a deal - but did give him a list of people that had contacted him. I was first on the list; my daughter who drives a 300CD would like to get the wagon so I'm going to look at it this morning. I'm a little 'gun shy' after what has transpired but it is worth the time to look. Its needs some work but the daughter wants to tackle it, she changes the oil in the 300CD herself and replaced the turbo - I figure if she can do that she can tackle anything. If it does not suit her perhaps someone on the list may be interested. It has the 603.96x engine. From my archive: Head model on 603 diesel engines: For the head question, look at the casting number near #2/#3 cylinder. Should be 603-016-xx-20 or something like that. If xx is 14, it's the old bad head. If 17, it's the newer head from a 3.5L. And if it's 22, it's a REALLY new head. Thanks, Wray, for saving me the trouble! ;) To clarify my previous post, if the head is number 17 or higher, it is the good, reinforced head. A number 15 or lower is the old, weak head. I have heard of 5 variations... 14 (1987 version), 15 (?), 17 (3.5L, 1990 to 1995), 20 (newer than 1995-ish), and 22 (last revision, AFAIK). I forget if number 15 exists or if it's a figment of my imagination, but the other 4 are real. The head I bought from Rusty in spring 2002 was a #22. - -dm :) On 1/9/06, Woodlandtaylors [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Can someone provide me a link that discusses the cylinder head cracking issue as it relates to the casting # and exactly where to view the casting marks? -- OK Don, KD5NRO Norman, OK '90 300D 243K, '87 300SDL 290K, '81 240D 173K, '78 450SLC 67K, '97 Ply Grand Voyager 78K ___ http://www.striplin.net For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://striplin.net/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_striplin.net -- No virus found in this incoming message. Re: [MBZ] Cracked diesel head on 124 series
Casey, The wagon was a project. The engine was a oily mess, injector pump leaking, water pump leaking, air conditioner inoperative, vacuum system problems - engine won't shut off - water leaks in rear from rear hatch - Engine was hot on my arrival but did start fine. Power seats blow fuses, speedometer states 129xxx but has not worked in a while. Steering tight but tracks bad, transmission shifts ok to about 40 mph then will not go into 4th until slowing down, then shifts into 4th with a thump. Something flapping under the hood or front on the car above 40 mph - managed only to 45 mph on a slight incline turbo may not be kicking in (plugged sensing line?). Interior needs more than TLC I could go on and on. I do not have enough time to assist the daughter with the work it needs. Getting back into the daughter car with 306,7xx mils other than the steering slop her car was 10 times better than the wagon - she thought she had a winner until she got to look at it. I can put you in touch with the 'new owner' if you wish. Re: [MBZ] Fuel pressure test kits for K-jetronic(CIS)
Dave, I purchased a kit to try and find out why my 300CE suffers from the same problems you are having. At times cold starts can be delayed and hot starts instantaneous. Frustrating all the kit did was confirm all is well. In my case exchanging the fuel pumps / pump relay / EU / Ignition module / new filters had no effect. For K-jet, you just need something you can put in the control circuit with a gauge and a shutoff valve. With the valve open, you read control pressure. With the valve shut, control pressure rises to match system pressure and you see what the regulator is set for. ___ http://www.striplin.net For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://striplin.net/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_striplin.net -- No virus found in this incoming message. Jim, Wonder how expensive 1/16 (.0625) copper sheet would be. A gasket made from it and annealed would conform well to any irregularities and seal. Re: [MBZ] Anyone in CO looking for a coupe?
Don, I have one of each (1978 1982). The 1978 is a garage Queen, its performance is ok. Freeway cruising no real difference between the two, on ramps tell you its not turbo'd. In the past I've been told the 5 cyl NA accelerates like a 240D with stick shift, don’t know if that true but it sure beats the hell out of the 240D with auto, or a least the one I had. Fuel economy on my 1978 is only around 24 mpg, does not change much around town or freeway. [If I list it on Ebay would I get a sudden increase in fuel mileage?] Car is dead reliable, does have the old servo system and York compressor for climate control. Dennis Original Message What are these non-turbo 123's like. I really like the look of this car and the color. But, I have never driven one of these without a turbo. What are they like?
