When I’m talking about this 190d I’m referring to using it more for local trips
to town or what not. Not planning on using it for regional work trips, might
end up getting tired of it pretty quickly then sell it

I had an '85 190D 2.2l 5spd I drove just over 100,000 miles. Best I ever got
was 43mpg, IIRC I had to keep it to 60mph for that. Average was more like 38mpg.

I also had an '84 190D 2.2l auto, the best I ever got in that was 38mpg,
average was more like 32.

We went to NH last weekend for Angie's birthday, the '15 Jetta TDI did 56mpg

around 60. Typical was around 40 with his 190D 2.2 munaul.

I would think the 2007 CDI Bluetec would get close to or over 40 MPG, IF it had
the DPF removed and was tuned for OFF ROAD USE ONLY. I would guess those Regen

2022-06-20 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
IIRC, a 2.2 5-speed manual in tip-top condition should turn
in around 42MPG, best-case conditions.

Our 2.5 does considerably worse. There are some fuel leaks,
and I believe the timing is not optimal. It's also got the wrong
rear end ratio. I think we've been getting something like 35MPG,
best-case.

now is the time to put it into service for myself rather than selling

My 2004 Golf reliably gets 45 to 48 mpg. Rather low for that model, my brother
routinely got 52 on the highway in his 05 Jetta.

I suspect the low profile tires (which I don't care for, but came with the car)
and the bad struts up front aren't helping any. Or the dragging rear brakes I
really need to replace tonight, new calipers, rotors, and pads.

Still can't complain too much, at least until I retire in a couple years.
Still have that 70 mile a day commute till then.

2020-04-16 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
When I was working the Mannheim (PA) auction for a buddy who is a high line
dealer I was actively searching for a nice 300E. At the time the combination of
a maroon interior and silver exterior was not attractive to the luxury car
buying public and these were cars the dealers would avoid at auction or pay a
much lower price for.

Meaning what? I find it a lot more attractive than beige/beige or

When pounding my fist on the dash would no longer bring back the gauge in my
1980 Citation, I just started filling it every 300 miles. No trip meter, so I
had to gas it up at 207200, 207500, erc.
It worked for me for the last couple of years of the car's life until the
transmission broke a shift fork and the car wasn't worth a $70 part, let alone
a weekend's work to replace it.

You could just fill it every time it drops to empty - you'd never run out,
since you'd have about half a tank. We fill at half a tank, just on
principle to keep water in the tank to a minimum, and "you'll never run out
if you consider ½ tank as empty.

[MBZ] 190D update

2019-09-29 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
I fiddled with the 190D a little today.  I pulled the fuel tank sender
again since it was showing empty.  It appears it reads correct till it
gets to half way then drops all the way down.  I do no really know what
else to do with it.  I tried the other one and it reads empty all the
time no matter where the float is.  I guess my only thing left to do is
find a good used one or buy a new one.

I checked the resistance of the evap temps sensor directly from its plug
behind the battery and the measurements are off, so I guess I will just
replace it then maybe the compressor will not run constantly.

[MBZ] 190D fuel gauge

2019-09-13 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
The tank sender on the 190D was stuck so I pulled it out and cleaned it
up as best as I could.  I put it back in and it worked when tank was
full, but jumped around sometimes.  Now the tank has about 260 miles on
it so I figure it is at about the half mark. It was jumping around and
would drop all the way to the bottom, then come back to where the level
should be.  For the last 40 miles or so it is just completely dead.
Should I pull the sender out and try to clean it some more, or spend the
money on a new one?  Or some other issue?

Depends on the exact thermistor and application, but usually on the order of
hundreds to thousands of ohms. Should vary with temp, too, quite a bit.

I don't remember if they are positive or negative gradient, but either an open

If the needle flickers, the rotational speed of the cable is not constant.

If the rotation speed of the cable is not constant, it will be as if the
vehicle was changing speeds instantaneously -- something it would be very
difficult for the cruise control to follow.

I would first get the cable/speedometer working properly before trying to
see if the cruise control works properly.

Well problem not solved. It is current 74 and when driving down the highway it
after about 10 minutes the fog starts followed by snow flakes then freezing up.
It literally feels like sitting in front of a deep freeze. Compressor still
appears to not be cycling. Is there a way I can test the evap temp sensor?
Maybe the wiring repair was not successful so maybe I can test it at the
connector to see. Otherwise would it be something in the relay or the pbu that
is not cycling the compressor? I suppose I can also recover the refrigerant and
charge it again but I do not think that is the problem. If a low charge was
causing it to freeze up the evap sensor should be cutting the compressor off I
would think.

[MBZ] 190D new cruise control issue

2019-09-13 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
Yesterday with the brand new rebuild programa cruise control amp cruise worked
perfectly. Toward the end of the day I did notice some slight surging. Today
set speed and it surged bad then cut out. When holding accel up it sometimes
accelerated normal most times surged while accelerating. Before I replaced the
amp I went thru the tests for the actuator and it was fine.

Re: [MBZ] 190D AC

2019-09-12 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
A bad evaporator temp sensor is what I would have suggested. It's there to cut
the compressor off when the evaporator is too cold, and those are your
symptoms. Check to make sure the sensor is in the correct position, too.
Don't know where it is on the W201, but on the W124 it's above the driver's
foot, inside.

2019-09-12 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
I don’t think so but it’s possible. I would think the compressor should cycle
though. Anyway I think I found the problem. I took everything apart to replace
a squeaky blower motor. I had repaired some wires back behind the battery that
were mouse damaged. I noticed the wiring to the evap temp sensor were chewed
on. I could not tell if they were completely chewed but looked bad so I
repaired it. I’m betting that was the problem but will know tomorrow when I
drive it to Tulsa.

So I replaced the manifold hose assembly, new drier, converted to 134 and
pulled vacuum for 1 hour before charging. AC blow great, super cold. Once you
are driving it blows ice cubes, literally. So after about 15-20 minutes the
evaporator is basically freezing up. You will start getting fog blowing out the
vents followed by snow, then loss of airflow. If I put it in ec mode for a few
minutes it thaws out then is fine again. This issue seems to be the compressor
is constantly running, it does not cycle off and on. The PBU that was in the
car had a programa rebuilt sticker and the snow flake button did not turn the
compressor on at all but the top button did that is supposed to be for dehumify

I believe my record is four times. The component leads can oxidize such
that the solder
doesn't want to stick very well. In such cases I do a lot of rubbing with

Tomorrow I am going to run thru the test procedure for the actuator then

[MBZ] 190D cruise control strangeness

2019-09-07 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
I am sorting out this 190D and one of the issues was dead cruise
control.  When I first got it cruise was completely dead.  I pulled the
amp and replaced the caps.  It would engage sometimes and will hold for
a minute or so then would drop out.  I pulled the amp again and replaced
the solder on every joint.  In the mean time I also pulled the
instrument cluster to replace the fuel/oil/temp gauge.  When I put it
back together the cruise does not work at all.  I pulled the cluster
again and swapped the speed sensor in the cluster with a different one.

Took car out again and it seemed to be working perfectly for a minute.
If I get the car up to, say, 65 and set the cruise while in 5th gear, it
holds that speed fine.  After about a minute or so it starts to lose
speed gradually.  I can tell the cruise is still engages its like the
set speed just keeps going down.  After the cruise is engaged if I push
the stock up to increase speed, it does not increase, it almost acts
like the cruise is disengaged until I let go of it then it engages again
at whatever speed it dropped to.  If I push it forward to cancel, then
pull it back to reengage it does not go back to the previously set
speed.  It seems to engage and whatever speed it dropped to and will
hold there then start dropping.

When I was on our street car was at about 50 in 4th gear and it seemed
to hold fine there.  I really need to drive it some more and play with
it to get a better idea of its behavior but this is my initial
assessment.  Any ideas?

[MBZ] 190D update

2019-08-30 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
Today I pulled the instrument cluster because the PO had replaced the
fuel temp oil gauge with one out of a gasser, so I put the correct one
in.  Took car to town to fill it up with fresh diesel and to see if fuel
gauge works, it doesn't. I guess I need to pull the sending unit and
clean it.

The cruise control appears to be completely dead again.  I double
checked to make sure I got the plug back on the speed sensor on the back
of the cluster, and I did so I brought the amp back in the house and
will redo all of the solder.

I guess it's not unheard of in W201.
About ten years ago, when there was a 190D(t) on eBay about two miles from my
home, it had Bars Leak in the radiator. "My father in law put that in there,
said the heater core leaked".

This may be the one that was on eBay ten years ago with a bad B2.
It's the same color anyway.
If it is the one I looked at back then, the euro lamps and awful wheels were
added since I saw it.

I had to add that switch to the '82 240D/3.0 when I converted it from
automatic to manual transmission.

As Jim said, it cuts out the cruise control when you push the clutch in.

Re: [MBZ] 190D clutch pedal switch, cruise control

2018-06-04 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
Yes, there's a clutch disengagement switch. Obviously it needs to be in
good condition,
else either you won't have any cruise, or it won't disengage and will
redline the engine
when you push in the clutch, trying to compensate for the car slowing down.

[MBZ] 190D clutch pedal switch, cruise control

2018-06-04 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
I removed the drivers side under dash cover to hunt for the cruise
control amp since the cruise control does not work, does not engage at
all. I then discovered its mounted under a cover under the passenger
side carpet.  I sure wish the other models had it here.  Anyway. when I
pulled the under dash cover, I discovered a switch on the clutch pedal
that the top part of the switch had detached itself from the plunger
part of the switch. So the 2 prong harness from the car plugs into the
plastic part of the switch.  The plastic part of the switch was just
hanging loose so I don't think anything in the switch is contacting.  So
what does this switch do?  I am thinking it disconnects the cruise
control when the pedal is pushed in?  If this is the case, if the switch
is fubar, maybe that would explain why the cruise is not working? Or
would this just cause it to not kick the cruise out when the pedal is
pushed?  I have already pulled the amp apart in prep to replace the caps
etc, but I think if this switch is part of the system I should replace
it first then test the cruise again.
