I used to order it from Walmart.com, but it does not appear to be
available at the moment.  I stocked up when it was $39 for a 5 gallon
bucket of full synthetic.  I think I got like 12 buckets of it.  It goes
out of stock from time to time and I assume its probably sitting on a
ship somewhere.

We need to change the oil in all the grooming machines which is going
to need around 15 gallons. I'd like to go synthetic and can get Delvac
1 5w40 at Tractor Supply for $52/2.5 gallons or just under $21 a
gallon. Considering Rotella T4 is nearly $15 a gallon it seems like a
good choice...

I have this 99 I need to get the fuel pump or whatever sorted on it,
cranks but won't fire, I don't think it is getting fuel. Swapped the
relay (K40?) or whatever that box is with the one from the wrecked E300,
still wouldn't fire.  Now I'm wondering if it has a crank position
sensor like the gassers

OK in a quick research this seems to be the issue but will need to get
the car to check and see:

http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/351031-w210-glow-plug-issue-97-e300d.html

Looks like if the connector is not connecting then the IP won't pump any
fuel, which is why the guy suspected the IP..  Damn wouldn't it be cool
if it is just a bad connector!

just waited an hour or two, we would finally get the glow plug light and
then car would fire up. But now I cannot get glow plug light on and
engine will not start without it. Here is a tally of what I have
investigated:

-glow plug resistance appears to be fine, all in the 0.6 to 0.8 ohm range
-glow plug relay seems to be fine, at least I see it providing 12V to
output blades when I energize it, and you can hear relay click

-replaced the K40 relay
-problem appears to be worse when engine or ambient is hot

The problem appears to be that the signal to energize the relay is not
working. I cannot consistently get 12v at the two input wires to the
glow plug relay. My understanding is that this starts with the ignition
switch, but it is also enabled by the temperature sensor located under
the manifold. I wonder if this sensor has gone bad...??

Also, I need to start the car to move it. So I figured if I just apply
12V to the input side of the glow plug relay, then it will pass power to
the glow plugs and I will be able to start it after 10-15 seconds - sort
of bypassing the electronics that send the 12v. However, when I do this
the relay only pops on for 1-2 seconds and turns right back off again,
not nearly enough time to energize those plugs to allow me to start. Is
that relay somehow super smart and know that my 12v is different than
the one from the ECU?

If anyone out there has some input, or can even provide a wiring diagram
for a 97 E210 E300D, that would really help.

I went through this exact issue with my 97 a couple of weeks ago. First
of all trying to hot wire the GP relay is not going to work because this
GP relay is digitally controlled by the engine computer. Even if you
manage to hotwire it, the computer won't allow fuel to the IP if it
doesn't have clear communication with the GP relay. The GP relay has a
PIC16 micro controller in it. There is a small 2 wire (3 pin) plug on
the GP relay with a white and brown wire. Brown is ground and white is a
data line from the engine computer. Grab that plug and wiggle it a bit.
You'll see it has some play. The plug is poorly designed and
intermittently cuts the data signal between the engine computer and GP
relay.

The solution is fairly simple. Solder your own wires to pins 1 and 2 of
the 3 pin plug on the GP relay and use standard off the shelf plugs to
securely plug it into the car's wiring harness (brown and white wires).
Leave everything else the same. You will also need to connect to the
OBD2 port and delete the stored code (P0380 i think).

Heres an older thread where we discussed the issue and the fix.

Re: [MBZ] 99 E300

2020-01-23 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
Yeah either one maybe. The daughter unit 124 is ok but needing this and that.
While I’d like a diesel that color combo makes me gag for some reason. Either
flip it to her for the 124 or sell it. I like the silver E320 gasser, it does
ok on petrol, about what the diesel did and is quite peppy. Everything works,
its a pretty nice car. I’m going to check out that old dead man 211 05 E500,
the woman seems anxious to unload it, if that is nice I might unload the 210
E320 then. Creep up into newer cars although they are getting more complex.. .

I’m thinking this might be something simple on the E300 as I doubt an injection
pump would go bad. I need to learn what that GP issue is about — a relay maybe?
Didn’t look at that on the first $500E300 as it just has 2 bad GPs. If the
GPs aren’t heating it’s not gonna light off easily. Or maybe a fuel pump or
relay? Both of those would be simple enough to swap from the crashed E300.

Any ideas let me know.

Re: [MBZ] 99 E300

2020-01-23 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
This car is pretty nice but I hate the white beige but whatever. Needs an
interior cleaning but really not bad, upholstery good. Good tires. 184k mi. A
few little rusty ding spots on the paint On edges but easy enough to deal with,
or not l. I put the OBD reader on it the only code was Glow plug circuit A
which probably means the GPs aren’t heating to start the car. H.

Young guy selling it has a shop, needed a starter apparently which he put on.
Spins but won’t fire. He thinks it’s the fuel pump or injection pump or
something as he said it wasn’t getting fuel in any injectors. Could just be
GPS. Worse deal I pull off the bits from the wrecked car.

Something about being sent over from a transmission shop for the starter. Who
knows, no codes for any trans issues, maybe whoever just left it there. But he
got the title and a few dineros and a new battery in it so I guess it’s
reasonable. He doesn’t have time to fool with it.

$500 I’m picking it up tomorrow.

2011-07-10 Thread Dave Walton
In my case one side had visible rust staining seeping through cracks in the
paint. The other side had no visual indication of rust but there was plenty of
it underneath the paint and adhesive goo they smeared over things. When I poked
around hard enough the paint peeled off. The goo took a bit of work because
they used so much.

Since then the rusting has increased logarithmically on the rest of the car. It
is impossible to keep up with it. The 82 240D and the 87 SDL's are doing just
fine.

If you don't mind a little rust here and there, not a bad car.

Yeah, I would never purchase an East Coast/Midwest or beach area car.

I see you're from Southern California...Nice. I'm out in Riverside. They
tend to talk alot of trash about Californians around here. You ever do any
Diesel get togethers or drives?

Nice car, and the lister is *sure* that the car has leather.

Cliff Notes edition:
210 models have become notorious for rusting around the inner door
jambs, engine crossmember pieces and some suspension support pieces
regardless where the MB is located. MB skipped a rust preventive dip
on these models.

It has been documented that a few original owners have had some
assistance from MB but not for the majority.

There is not a 210 in my future.

It's a shame. They're beautiful cars, very nice drivers, substantially
better ergonomics and suspension than the W124 that I'm becoming familiar
with...

Interesting - I drove my wife's '96 A6 (C4) quattro wagon yesterday. First
time in about a month. That car is a good step ahead of my W124 in terms of
ergonomics, features, overall feel. The W124 feels old in comparison.

The W210 is a similar step ahead of the C4 Audi. And it makes sense...the
W124 was first brought out in this country in '87, the C4 Audi in '92, the
W210 in '96.

Oh, and I saw a listing for a UK 300D 4Matic owner's manual on ebay. I want
*that* car!
