No, I think he bought it for under $1k and sold it about a year later for about
$1k. Worse than Snook, it is rare for him to keep a nice car for more than a
couple years. I can just barely remember that car. When I was I high school
and starting to become car-aware, we looked up its book value, which back then
was over $15k.

Valero generally thinks different from the rest of the pack. Their
MO is to buy up distressed real estate (refineries and stations) and
then run them cheap. In the ethanol meltdown a few years ago, they
bought up several ethanol refineries. That gives them an edge on E10
Benzin.

Don't know if I mentioned it already, but the Valero station on River Road
in Bethesda, MD is selling diesel for $2.99, which is surprising since
there is no other competition for at least a mile away, where the price is
40 cents higher...

Interestingly diesel is holding over $3.00 (generally $3.09) in MA but down to
$2.93 just over the border in NH. That tells me the MA stations are seriously
raping us on price since NH has a higher fuel tax and traditionally prices
climb 15-20 cents when I cross the border.
Gas is around $2.39 just about everywhere, with the coming of cold weather our
slide has slowed but I heard on the radio last night that oil is under
$50/barrel so we should see prices continue to slide.

Filled up yesterday, local Shell station had diesel at $2.69. One local
grocery chain gives 5 cents credit toward fuel for every $50 spent on
groceries, another sells $50 gas cards for $40, one card for every $50
spent. Using both discounts, I had 20 cents off the pump price (price now
$2.49), then with the gas card paid an effective price of 80%, or $1.99 per
gallon. I can now fill the E300 tank, usually about 21 gallons when the
reserve light comes on, for less than $50. Very nice!

While I'm all for a Mac, for most people they just don't make good fiscal sense
to me. If you want a decent laptop and don't need some sort of high end gaming
rig, $500 will buy a very capable (Windows) laptop.

Re: [MBZ] Benzin

2015-01-06 Thread clay via Mercedes
I have been tracking the lower end laptops for #2 boy. The 15 models can be
had for $250 at Fry's. That gets you a dual core, 4 gig ram, and 500 gig
drive. They run Win 8 out of the box. Those are good enough to run for a few
years and swap out for another. Cutting edge laptops would be the i5 or i7,
but those are expensive and fail anyway in four years.

#1 boy has a four year old i7 that is showing its age. Upgraded the HDD,
battery is worn down, it needs an external optical drive, but the screen still
runs. Windows has shat on the thing three times since he has owned it. It
required a full rebuild and for some reason keeps crapping itself.

[MBZ] Benzin prices and random observations

2012-12-24 Thread Dieselhead

Iron butt saturday (another 1000+ miles in one day)

Benzin 2.89 to 3.19 most around 2.95 to 2.98. That was a welcome
relief from the last year. Highest prices nearest the LA (Loosianna,
not lalaland) refineries

Diesel 3.59 to 4.05 Mostly 3.69 to 3.79

HOT today! Feels like over 80, but it is very humid and reportedly
closer to 70. rained this morning...Whazzat?

Snow plowing by state xDOT is lousy. 1-2 of ice for the first 100
miles or so, then a break, then another 60 miles or so of patches of
ice.Mostly 25mph in extremely heavy traffic.

Heavy traffic until southern MO, The rest of the way was pretty
normal. Freight is all screwed up since last Wed. Trucks stranded
in various places, then slow going.

Wed starts the SDL head replacement.
