Crapsman hand tools were the last bastion of kwality at snears, until

I have purchased one HF ratchet, a stubby 3/8” drive that was one of their
“high end” or more expensive models. It lasted maybe six months, used possibly
10-12 times, none of which stressed it significantly, it was used to spin off
fasteners in areas with limited space, like the top bolt on motor mounts, after
they had been broken loose.

The reverse lever has failed in that it doesn’t select the direction, you have
to fiddle with it and maybe it will do the job, and the ratcheting action is
sloppy as heck. No doubt internal failures, but I’m not buying another.

I put Mobil 1 wheel bearing grease, the pink stuff, into one. Worked
surprisingly well. The teeth on that one we're good, it just didn't ratchet. I
cleaned and lubed it and it was back to work...

2019-11-18 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
HF wrenches are great, better fit and finish than Craftsman for half the money.
When I did the brakes on the Jetta a few weeks ago I bought my first HF
ratchet. Flex head, fine tooth. It works well and didn't break with a 3'
cheater on it. Time will tell how it lasts but for $9 I'm pleased.

I got a lot of great Inside Track deals in the 1980s and 1990s, many of them on
actual name brand items like Blackhawk jack stands.
I don't recall why I dropped it about 25 years ago.

I thought Stanley bought Craftsman a few years ago and was recently making
moves to return production to USA.

Yeah but they’ll swap your worn out ratchets with Asian made ones. If you look
online, you might be able to buy rebuild kits for your USA ratchets. If you
have a vintage craftsman RHFT (round head fine tooth) ratchet, do not swap it
out as these are quite desirable and valuable!
Here is an example of a RHFT ratchet:

I just googled this and it seems that the (Lowe’s) stores are misinformed.
Corporate says they’ll honor “all lifetime warranties no matter where the
Craftsman tool was purchased.”

Guess I’m heading back over there some time soon with a copy of this article
and my ratchets.

Neither Ace nor Lowe’s will honor warranties on my Craftsman tools, many of
which are second generation tools. I’ve got two ratchets that are worn out
right now and need the little rebuild kits they used to give you. Both
retailers told me “tough beans” when I asked for replacement parts or even a
replacement ratchet for both.

Crapsman is and has been at ace hardware also.    They have not
warranted a tool for me for probably 40 years.  THey are even crappier
now.   On fleabay, clowns are piecing out old crapsman sockets and
