I like the idea of a convertible, but in practice they are noisy, have

(since the top requires special care when washing, among other
things). A sunroof is the perfect compromise. I agree that the M-B
mechanism is too complicated and failure-prone, though. Like Mitch, I
miss the manual sliding (non-tilting) sunroof on the late '70s Saabs,
which never broke and could be opened and closed with one hand faster
than any electric equivalent.

No, no, no. You're trying to get one vehicle to be too many different
things.
The convertable is for nice sunny days with the top down. The top is only
for use when/if you get caught with sudden rain. Otherwise, it sits in the
garage while you drive the car with the solid steel roof.

Actually, everywhere I've lived, the sun beating down through an open sun
roof just made it hotter. Open side windows seemed to always work better
for cooling. But then, SWMBO insisted on leather seats in the Outback and
the only trim line with leather that year had a hole in the roof too (which
has never been opened after the initial ops check). I have short legs but
I'm tall from the butt to the head so the lost headroom is no bargain
either.

I'd like to know who made them for Saab 99 series. You pushed forward or pulled
back on a recessed handle and the roof unlatched and slid in the desired
direction. You let go and it locked in place. No cranks, motors, or any of that
stuff. There was even a nice automatic pop up wind deflector at the front, just
like a MBZ.

Re: [MBZ] Hole in the roof, was: parts sources, again

The absolute BEST MB roof I've had was my '80 240D - good solid steel; no
hole in it. What a car roof oughtta be.

The best sunroof MB ever had, IMHO, was in the W123 chassis where they had
the manual sunroof with the T handle.

Y'all've heard me say for years, but I'll say it again, I think it is
stupid to cut a hole in a perfectly good steel top. We've (Americans),

big money for 'em.
I sure as Hell wouldn't have a car with a hole in the roof, if they'd
make one without it.

I kind of like the sun roof on mine. Then again I bought a car
that didn't have the sun roof hoisted off of it before I bought
it. Don't know why anyone would buy a car without the sun roof
but I would also weld something up there What? Oh! Foisted.
Never mind. :-)

I think that the person who hoisted sunroofs off on all US destined cars is

and sealed. If I were to be preparing to repaint a car, that's what I'd do.

Yep. My '84 240D has that, but I never open the roof - shy would I
want that? Sun gets in my eyes too often. It serves no real purpose.

Lets the heat out faster after my black 300d with dark tint sits in the sun.
