Re: [MBZ] IT'S ALIVE!

2018-03-15 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
273012 to be exact.

I’m going to hang onto this as a third/spare car. It costs me $300 a year to
insure, so it makes sense to hang onto it for what little it costs me. That
and due the condition and miles I don’t think the resale would be all that
great.

I probably have about $1,000 in it over my acquisition costs, making my total
investment about $2200 to date, give or take a little.

I’m beginning to get a little more tinker time these days, so having it around
gives me an outlet for my need to tinker.

I’m just surprised at how fast this car is. I’ve had enough W124 cars to have
an imprint of what to expect performance-wise, and having the M119 engine under
the hood just makes this a totally different car. Add to that the completely
rebuilt suspension, which is also something I’ve never had in a W124, and it’s
just a weird (but good) experience.

2.82 seriously wakes the car up. You can get a diff on ebay in great
condition for $150. Nobody expects an old mercedes to romp off the line
like that; it makes LSD a reasonable consideration to avoid wheelspin, but
I gather you probably have ASR.

Thank you! A real relief, as I wasn’t looking forward to doing battle with the

I didn’t want to be the “one”, either.

Now to sort the rest of the piddly stuff….

Got the rebuilt ETA in the car this afternoon. Runs like a champ, no
warning lights.

Took it out for a quick drive, as the tires are a little sketchy and
it’s not getting new ones until Wednesday.

OH. MY. G-D.

A W124 with a 4.2 liter V8. I have driven many, many W124s with the
venerable 3.0 liter inline six, but I have never had a W124 that was
like this one. I can’t even imagine what a 500E would be like.

Once I get a new set of skins on the car I’ll take it out and wind it
up good.

I wouldn't say it that way, but I agree working on them is well nigh

Not any worse than a W140 from what I can see. The sides are tight, especially
the driver’s side, but otherwise it doesn’t appear to be any worse than a W140.

I’ll let you know after I change engine mounts. That will be a pig of a job,
and the car needs them.

[MBZ] IT'S ALIVE!

2018-03-12 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Got the rebuilt ETA in the car this afternoon. Runs like a champ, no warning
lights.

Took it out for a quick drive, as the tires are a little sketchy and it’s not
getting new ones until Wednesday.

OH. MY. G-D.

A W124 with a 4.2 liter V8. I have driven many, many W124s with the venerable
3.0 liter inline six, but I have never had a W124 that was like this one. I
can’t even imagine what a 500E would be like.

Once I get a new set of skins on the car I’ll take it out and wind it up good.

Don't get too excited too soon. If the solder joints are going, just
handling it like you did could have perturbed it back into operation. If
they are, though, it'll spazz out again soon enough.

Re: [MBZ] IT'S ALIVE!!!

2010-10-18 Thread Dieselhead
If the leak is not in the engine compartment, then the line from the
tank to the filter/pump and from the filter pump to the hard line
forward are most likely. It sounds like on some cars, the line
between the filter and pump is also rubber.

If the big hose is bad, I have lots leftover and I will make you a
deal on however many inches you need.

That, and finding where the gasoline leak underneath the car is is all I
have to do to take it out on the road. I thought the leak was in the
middle of the passenger compartment, but looked there this evening and
saw nothing. Maybe it's near the back of the car.

Yes, it does feel good. The car is up on jackstands in the street, but
the garage is empty (and looks a little strange ... :-) ).

I still have little stuff to do, like to figure out how the baffle plate
and air hose for the left engine mount go back in, but yes, it's
basically done. Then I can start changing the engine oil and filter and
the transmission fluid and filter. And ...

[MBZ] IT'S ALIVE!!!

2010-10-17 Thread Craig
I got the 1994 E420 back together and, with a friend's help, rolled out
on to the street. I then put it up on jack stands again and set up to
flush the power steering system. We ran the engine to do that and it ran
just fine.

Unfortunately, I didn't leave enough power steering fluid in reserve to
refill the reservoir after I reconnected the return line from the
steering box to the reservoir (I did want to make sure it was well
flushed). So, first thing Monday, I'll need to call Rusty and order some
more.

That, and finding where the gasoline leak underneath the car is is all I
have to do to take it out on the road. I thought the leak was in the
middle of the passenger compartment, but looked there this evening and
saw nothing. Maybe it's near the back of the car.
