I have 2 300D’s and he is driving one of them now but I don’t want him using it

We are splitting it 50/50. This arrangement has worked well for in the past.

The Subaru he wants is something like the sporty WRX and I afraid most of them
have been driven and pretty abused. I like the idea of a w211 or something
similar.

Only concern I’ve heard with Subarus is head gasket leaks.

I’d avoid Honda, people praise them but I’ve had bad luck with their automatic
transmissions.

For your budget you should be able to find a nice E or M class also.

Most all of the Subaru choices are solid vehicles and as long as you
steer away from the boy racer models (WRX springs to mind) they don't
tend to get hooned too bad. They also not terrible to drive. I had
occasion to drive an early 2000's Forester that was a solid, if
slightly boring ride. Realistically I should have bought the wagon that

yes Subarus are a great choice. we have had 1970, 1971, 78 (first 4WD) 83.
& the 2001 Forester which I bought new. only reason I sold Forester is my
brother the car dealer gave me a 78 240D for Christmas present.

I'm with Curt.

I have some exposure to "Subies" as they are "the" car to drive in Flagstaff,
and understandably so with all the off-road activities here along with the
winter. Speaking with some of the locals, later, as in mid 2000s and newer, are
supposed to be quite robust. I believe the head gasket issues are in the older
models and limited to a specific engine. They appear to be quite versatile as
well as rugged.

Only concern I’ve heard with Subarus is head gasket leaks.

I’d avoid Honda, people praise them but I’ve had bad luck with their automatic
transmissions.

For your budget you should be able to find a nice E or M class also.

Sadly a Subaru is probably a solid choice. The advantage being that a lot of
shops can/will work on them. It can be harder to find a good shop that can/will
work on Mercedes.

Most all of the Subaru choices are solid vehicles and as long as you steer away
from the boy racer models (WRX springs to mind) they don't tend to get hooned
too bad. They also not terrible to drive. I had occasion to drive an early
2000's Forester that was a solid, if slightly boring ride. Realistically I
should have bought the wagon that Dwight had years ago, probably would have
saved me money vs getting involved with old "cheap" Mercedes...
