Something else I wanted to include in this and forgot….

If you ever need to remove a Mercedes air bag from the steering wheel, there’s
a great factory tool that makes it really easy:

126 589 00 10 00

It’s Torx T30 bit with a hex end that you can get a 1/4 drive socket/ratchet on.

If you’ve never removed an air bag, it’s a real PITA unless you have a short
T30 Torx wrench, that is, one that can fit between the back of the steering
wheel and the instrument panel. If the wrench is skinny, you’ll have a tough
time getting it centered in the opening for the fastener and landed in the
socket of the bolt.

This bit is under $10 from the dealer and fits all Mercedes air bag bolts, so
it’s not a single model sort of tool. I finally broke down and bought one
because I needed to remove the air bag on the ML550 to replace a button set for
the telematics, and believe me, it made the job so easy and quick I kick myself
for not getting one of these a long time ago.

2022-05-29 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
Working on the 2008 ML550 today, I found something I really like in the way of
detailing products.

We’ve all dealt with black plastic or vinyl trim and how it ages and gets
chalky due to exposure to the elements and age. With cars in Florida this is
accelerated, as the sun can be pretty brutal here as can the temperatures. I’ve
tried all sorts of “back to black” and other such trim treatments, none of
which seemed to last long (or at all.)

On a recommendation from a detailing buddy I tried something from a company
called “GTECHNIQ” called “Permanent Trim Restorer C4”.

It’s not cheap, I think the little 15 ml bottle I got cost around $30, but I'm
pretty much willing to try almost anything once if I see some good results
others have experienced.

On the ML550 there is black plastic trim that runs along the rocker panel area
above the running boards (if you have them.) It’s a flat black textured
material like most black trim, and mine was pretty chalky. They give you some
applicators with the product, which is nice. They also recommend the use of
gloves, as it does have some nasty solvents in it from the looks of the
ingredients.

Application was simple, wipe on, let dry, wipe off any excess. The results were
instantly apparent, but I don’t put a lot of stock in that because most of the
trim restoration product I’ve tried look great when first applied.

I’ll watch this stuff carefully over the next few weeks and see how it shapes
up. My initial experience has been good.

I have a real problem with all these garage queens.  Cars were built to
be driven not on exhibit in a museum or to just sit in a garage.  It's
fun to see them, but would be more fun to see them running and driven
like real cars.  I think about the guy here who has all these Rollers
100+/-yo and he drives them all and maintains them, and they look really
nice, but he uses them as they were meant to and enjoys them for what
they are

[MBZ] Martha Is In The House!

2018-02-12 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Some observations as I collect my thoughts tonight:

Driving in limp home is easy-peasey. I really didn’t know what to expect,
however, when I was going down the road at 30 mph I was wondering why I was
revving to over 3000 rpm - than I remembered that the transmission wouldn’t
upshift at that level, so I backed off and sure enough, it shifted.

Idle is high and sometimes rough. It doesn’t like to start sometimes. Hmm.

Lower engine harness is definitely kaput. I had oil pressure - I didn’t have
oil pressure - then I did.

I have never driven a W124 with tighter suspension than this car. It’s
definitely been rebuilt recently. Dang thing drives like it’s on rails.

Noticed a small 4-5 conductor harness between the “coffin” and the false
firewall that has deteriorated to the point where someone has pulled the wires
apart to separate them. Hmm. Looks like they go into a round connector of
some sort that’s clipped or anchored to the back of the coffin box. The ETA
harness is definitely a new one. All of the engine covers are in place and
there’s absolutely no sign of any leaks or seepage.

Interior is filthy as noted. I am often puzzled by the conundrum of why
someone would spend big bucks to maintain the mechanicals on a car yet treat
the interior like a pig sty. However, this will clean up nicely as will be
seen in a few days.

Odometer is dead. Probably needs gears. Wonder how long it’s been that way?

Did some piddly stuff tonight before I closed up. Pulled the BE1432 and
cleaned it up, popped the faceplate and cleaned connections, investigated the
reason for no volume down but having volume up - lousy design in the mechanics
of the button. All of the speakers work now (left side didn’t when I got the
car) as does the fader. Gotta love that DeOxIt fader cleaner! A BE1432
faceplate exchange appears to be in my future.

Pulled the roller box out of the console, center wood and ash tray. Cleaned
everything well and reinstalled. Replaced a burned out lamp in the ash tray and
reattached the wood trim surround. Spring and mechanism that makes ashtray
toggle open/closed is buggered up and can’t be fixed, so a new (used) ashtray
is in my future (anyone got a W124 ashtray they want to part with?) The flat
metal spring in the back of the ashtray assembly that pops the ash receptacle
out when you push the button had come out of the back where the plastic had
broken down around the rivet that secured it. New rivet with a back up washer
fixed that.

Did a couple of test spots on the finish, and while it’s going to take some
work, it looks like it should recover well. A lot of little black spots all
over the car from something environmental, like a tree. They came off with
some Meguire’s 105 polish, which is good.

Lots of lamps out.

Trunk is tight and dry.

Definitely needs a new ignition lock cylinder and keys. Everything works fine,
but they’re definitely the original keys based on the wear and condition. I
can’t get the car registered and titled until it’s drivable, which means I
can’t order keys or lock cylinders until then.

I’m not sure what I’ll have time for tomorrow, maybe some paint recovery. At
least I’ll get the diagnostics connected to it and see what it says. Gotta
start putting my dealer parts order together for tomorrow.

Re: [MBZ] Martha Is In The House!

2018-02-12 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Done. See the update:

Had a lot of stuff going on around the house and had to wait for the boys to
clear out so I had the driveway to myself. Got started on the exterior about
5:00 and just came in to update the blog and hydrate. I’ll be moving the car
into the garage next where the lighting is far better and I can start in on
surface prep. That’s probably about as far as I’ll get tonight, although I’m
seriously considering taking the time to hook it up to my DAS system and
running the diagnostics to see what it says.

Hmmm, might be the case. I never had that problem with the 220D or the
240D. I made sure the pipes were aligned without stress and that all the

I find that on the older 4 cyl dissels, if I don't use a bandaid, the
new pipe breaks anyway. So, when crockauto replaced the new middle
pipe for the 240D, THIS time, I cut it off and put a bandaid between it
and the front pipe. This will absorb a lot of the vibration and make
the second new one last more than 1000 miles.

If the 240D had a piece of flex in the front pipe like the OM603 300D, I
would not need the bandaid.

The 124 and 126 are the only ones I have had that DID NOT need a bandaid.

Re: [MBZ] Martha Report - Day 2

2017-05-14 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Just got back from a nice 30 or so minute drive in the country in the E300D.
Nice.

While it might be hard pressed to get out of the way in a hurry, it’s still
pretty peppy considering it’s a naturally aspirated engine. The smaller W124
chassis really makes driving it fun, not like the living room couch ride of he
W126 (not that there’s anything wrong with that!)

Exhaust is “buzzy”, no doubt due to the flex that is in the place of the
catalyst. I bought a Nickson band clamp at FLAPS today along with some
Permatex exhaust sealer goop. I’m going to try it on one end of one of the
flex pieces where it meets the hard pipe and see how it works. If it does a
good job I’ll do the same to the rest of the joints. It only looks like one of
them is leaking.

Dash thermometer is wacky, so I’ll need to order a new thermistor for it.
Hopefully I can find the part number again from Mouser. I love the cheap fix -
last one of these I did I probably had $5 total in the whole fix, if that.

Car handles well, gets up in the 60s without a problem, tracks straight and
true and has no noises, vibrations or rattles.

Tomorrow I turn in a dealer order for a boatload of stuff, mainly to sort out
the breather tubes on the valve cover. That gets done on Saturday and then I’m
pretty much done with it other than a differential drain and fill and a PS
drain and fill. I’ll be putting in new aux fans on Wednesday.

I MANAGED TO GET 100% DIESELFIED IN 1984. Never regretted it. Still
disappointed that no van is available in the USA with a MFI Diesel
engine. The Metris did not have a stellar reputation in RTW, or I might
have tried harder to get one of them. The 100% Dieselfication ended in
2006 when I inherited the company D GC.

If it was not for the van and the SL we'd could be DIeselfied in 2
generations. But the SL sits and she drives my 300D that was supposed
to be SWMBOs.

Yup. Certified dieselmania. I don’t believe there is a known cure,
short of death.

And no, I’ve got to pass this car along to the oldest boy. No loss of
focus for the finnie. I’ve already been tempted by others and been
able to avoid them. I’m dead set on a finnie to replace the W123 300D
and nothing else.

What’s funny is that I took the youngest for a ride in it and now he
says he wants a diesel….my plan to overtake the family with diesel is
working…HA HA HA HA HA HA

6.7 seconds 0-60 is pretty good.

Not that much slower than her current ride.

And quite possibly quicker than her former ride.

I couldn’t get to the connection on the IP, so I split the line going to is and
“teed” to run to the transmission vacuum modulator.

Shifts are a little late, but very smooth. Nice!

I’ll just have to plan on some time to sort out the vacuum system when I have
the manifold off.

Hmm….what to do next….

A clear sign of ineptitude is when somebody tries to remove a bad bulb by
unscrewing the adjusters. For bonus points, the really stupid don't bother
trying to fix the aim when they eventually figure out those weren't the

Re: [MBZ] Martha Report - Day 2

2017-05-14 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Removed the headlight assembly and inspected.

As I suspected, the plastic frame around the headlight lens was cracked in
several places, rendering its ability to hold the lens in place worthless.

I disassembled the headlight, removed the frame and lens, and have applied JB
Weld to the affected areas. It’s clamped up and drying now, so by mid
afternoon I should be able to reassemble and test. As long as the plastic
frame holds up, and I see no reason why it wouldn’t, we should be good to go
with proper headlight aiming on the driver’s side headlight.

If it fails to hold up in the long term I’ll go the Curley route and hit up
Car-Parts.com. I checked and there are several places in town that show up as
having these.

Not sure why the passenger side was all wacky. It’s intact and was easily
adjusted.

2017-05-14 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Dan,

Yes, I think that's what I have in mine.

However, when I had to replace my ASD diff a few years ago, the shop
ignored my request to use the M1 and put in whatever they normally use.
During the drive home I found that it would catch on sharp turns.

I immediately drained out their stuff, and re-filled with the M1 and also
the MB limited slip diff additive. I don't know which did the trick, but
all was fine after that.

Now if I can find the part number for that additive...

I don’t want to be replacing flex discs as consumables.

I’ll get it sorted. It’s just a matter of nailing it down.

So, teach the kid to use the throttle like an on/off switch while accelerating.
Or give him the wife's car and let her have the W124. That's her normal driving
style with diesels, right?

Re: [MBZ] Martha Report - Day 2

2017-05-14 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Did my early morning grocery run in the E300D.

No joy on the hard shifts. I’ll get under the car today and check the vacuum
modulator - hopefully that’s the issue. I’m going to check the line routing if
I can as well. The connections from the flying saucer to the modulator are
pretty straightforward, the only difficult part being the stuff under the
manifold that you can’t see or get to easily.

Headlights were all whack-a-doo, that is, pointed in all different directions.
Did a quick garage door aiming and found that the driver’s side headlight was
all messed up inside. Linkages broken, stuff not anchored to anything, etc.
More confirmation that the car took a hit in the front, now narrowed down to
the left front.

Gonna do a Curley and hit Car-Part.com and find a headlight assembly unless
someone here has one they want to part with. I’ll pull this one off today and
have a look inside, but on a cursory inspection from the access panel there’s
some serious stuff going on internally I probably can’t fix. Looks like
someone just put a new lens on and nothing more. So at least I have a new lens…

Car ran great other than the neck-snapping shifts. Speaking of which, looks
like the driver’s headrest doesn’t work or the switch is gunked up. Something
else to check today.

Rear defogger did its job well and the cruise is now working, maybe from my
fuse replacement yesterday, so we’ve got some positive stuff for the day
already.

I will say that this is a fun car to drive after putting around in a W126.

Re: [MBZ] Martha Report - Day 1

2017-05-13 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Did the final round for the day.

Cleaned front carpets and mats. They cleaned up quite well.

Got the windshield washer reservoir installed with a new grommet on the pump.
Sadly, they dumped the washer fluid heater and redirected the coolant flow, but
at least someone had the foresight to get a new cap for the reservoir rather
than keep the original which would have had the holes for the heater pipes in
it.

Had to aim a couple of the windshield washer jets. Dental picks are nice for
this, as I didn’t have one of those “T” pins that also work well for the job.

Replaced all of the fuses with copper fuses. Popped the relays in the back of
the fuse box and cleaned pins with some DeOxIt. Replaced the 30 amp fuse on
what I suspect is the auxiliary fan fuse (square, green, with a blade fuse as
part of the relay?)

Still shifts hard, but not as bad as when the vacuum line was disconnected.
I’ll need to get back under the car and check the modulator, as it is probably
leaking. It’s the original with the rubber cap, so I suspect it probably is.
Also noticed the shift linkage bushings are gone. I mean GONE. I wonder if I
should bite the bullet and buy one of the special pliers? Not looking forward
to that job, as the tunnel is really, really tight on this car.

All in all a pretty good day, despite the auxiliary fan debacle. I’m bummed
that i couldn’t resurrect them, but they were pretty much toast long before I
got to them from the looks of things. Not a lot to do tomorrow as I’m at the
point of needing parts. I’ll test the vacuum modulator on the transmission an
that will probably be the extent of the work I do. Gotta start getting the
300D prepared for delivery, as the buyer comes a week from Monday to drive it
back to Grand Rapids….

Re: [MBZ] Martha Report - Day 1

2017-05-13 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Got under the car.

Looks pretty good, no surprises. There are two pieces of flex used to “delete”
the catalyst and one of them is leaking. I’m thinking I’ll take the car to my
local custom exhaust guy and just ask him if he can fix the leak and hope he
doesn’t want to get all official on me and insist that he has to install a new
catalyst. If he does I’ll just have to dig into it a little more to get the
leak sealed up.

Rubber and joints are all fairly new and in good shape. Definitely needs new
brake hoses, but that’s no surprise. Other than the missing sound deadening
panel underneath (anyone got one they want to part with?) below decks actually
looks pretty good.

Transmission vacuum box was disconnected, as in the line looks like it just
came loose. Reconnected it and will test drive in a bit.

Was hoping to bleed brakes while I had the car in the air but I’m running out
of steam. I’m going to clean up, maybe hit the mats with some carpet cleaner,
and call it a day.

Fans are toast. Both have internal electrical issues, shorted windings I
suspect based on the bench tests I did on them both.

So I’ll be running aux fanless for now.

In the meantime, anyone know where the relay would be for the fans? I want to
go ahead and check the circuit out so when I get replacements I can drop them
in and know they’ll be ready to run.

Ramps.

Tearing down the aux fans right now. Just got them out of the car (oy!) and
letting them soak with some Kroil for a few minutes.

Both were pretty much non-functional, as they could barely be turned by hand.
I have had some success recovering these in the past, so I’m going to give it a

I have never seen a condenser so crudded up before in my life. There must have

I just try to understand the motivation. Something like the EGR gains nothing,
not to mention you’re bypassing filtered air into the engine. Just like the
lack of a cabin air filter.

Grrr.

It is a testament to these cars that they survive stuff like this.

The car has definitely been repainted at some point in its past. Not a
bad thing, just something I noticed as I worked on the exterior.

Now that I have the exterior pretty much in order, I’ll move to the
interior and get the carpets clean and clean the interior thoroughly. For
the most part it’s not bad, the headliner is a little dirty, but otherwise
this should be a fairly easy job. Looking forward to seeing what under
the rear seat cushion yields. The PO did leave about $5 of change in the
 ash tray. Nice!

After the interior is done I’ll get the car in the air and do some work
underneath. I’ll probably flush the brakes, as the fluid is almost black.
I need to check the transmission vacuum modulator, as I suspect that’s
the source of the hard shift issue since all of the vacuum lines topside
look OK and to be in the proper positions.

In my down time I’ll start getting a parts list together to sort out the
breather tubing on the intake. I have GOT to sort that out, as it’s
making me crazy looking at it. Antenna doesn’t work, either, so I need to
pop the aftermarket head unit and see if it’s connected properly before I
 tear into the antenna.

Ouch, air filter bypassed when (if) that EGR valve opened. Hopefully a
block-off plate is installed, or at least the vacuum tube sealed to prevent it
from opening.

Re: [MBZ] Martha Report - Day 1

2017-05-13 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I noticed that yesterday. However, what I can see appears to be stock and
unaltered, although as I go through the car in more detail I definitely am
finding things that would indicated someone in the past liked to second guess
the engineers and cut corners.

For instance:

Figured I would replace the cabin air filters, since this car has them - or
does it?

I pulled all of the plenum pieces out to get at the filters, and guess what?
They’re not there. As in someone removed them and never put replacements in.
Yup, a gaping hole from the plenum straight into the airbox/evaporator/heater
core. Lovely.

So with the plenum pulled apart and all of the seals removed, I vacuumed the
detritus from AZ out, mostly pine needles as one would expect and then
installed fresh cabin air filters.

While I was in the neighborhood I pulled the cover off of the monowiper and
greased everything in sight with Mobil 1 grease. That area looked pretty good.

In anticipation of future troubleshooting of the AC system, specifically the
auxiliary fans, I reconnected the disconnected wires from the high temperature
refrigerant switch on the receiver/dryer. I’ll be looking into aux fan
operation later today, I suspect.

I also noticed that the tube from the exhaust manifold going to the air intake
valve (EGR I expect) has been pinched off. That is, someone appears to have
cut the tube off just above the clamp at the manifold and then smashed the stub
of the tube flat to seal it. The connection at the intake tube appears to have
been left open to outside air. There is no cap or plug.

At this point I’m going to do some interior cleaning and get that sorted before
I get under the car and poke around.

[MBZ] Martha Report - Day 1

2017-05-13 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Clay bar’ed and waxed the car this morning. No need for polishing as the
finish is good and I don’t want to take any of the clear coat off.

The car has definitely been repainted at some point in its past. Not a bad
thing, just something I noticed as I worked on the exterior.

Now that I have the exterior pretty much in order, I’ll move to the interior
and get the carpets clean and clean the interior thoroughly. For the most part
it’s not bad, the headliner is a little dirty, but otherwise this should be a
fairly easy job. Looking forward to seeing what under the rear seat cushion
yields. The PO did leave about $5 of change in the ash tray. Nice!

After the interior is done I’ll get the car in the air and do some work
underneath. I’ll probably flush the brakes, as the fluid is almost black. I
need to check the transmission vacuum modulator, as I suspect that’s the source
of the hard shift issue since all of the vacuum lines topside look OK and to be
in the proper positions.

In my down time I’ll start getting a parts list together to sort out the
breather tubing on the intake. I have GOT to sort that out, as it’s making me
crazy looking at it. Antenna doesn’t work, either, so I need to pop the
aftermarket head unit and see if it’s connected properly before I tear into the
antenna.

Re: [MBZ] Martha Returns!

2013-04-23 Thread Dan Penoff
If it was that easy...

The choice of products and processes is really dictated by the condition of the
finish. It's difficult at best to suggest that what I used on this car would
work well on another.

Considering that when you get this aggressive you're taking some of the paint
or clear coat off in the process, you have to be very careful about what you
use and how you go about using it.

I would not be this aggressive on a two stage paint (clear coat/base coat) as
there would be a significant risk of polishing through the clear coat.

That's what I like about single stage paints - there is usually enough paint
that you can get aggressive and have something to work with. The older MB
paints of the 60s and 70s are like this - they like to get chalky and oxidize,
but there is so much material there it's easy to polish the finish out and
recover it nicely.

What you can't see on the S500 is the paint condition, which is pretty lousy.
Lots of hairline cracks, scratches, etc., that aren't through the paint but are
present in the surface. A repaint is truly the only way to fully recover the
surface, but for mere cosmetics what I have done will suffice.

3M Imperial Hand Glaze is good stuff, and something that works well for more
modern vehicles with clear coat finishes, especially dark finishes that easily
show swirl marks.

Understand that a glaze is essentially a very fine compound used to fill
scratches after polishing. It's not a wax.

If you want to wax a car using 3M products, I recommend their Perfect-It Show
Car Wax. Excellent stuff and very easy to apply.

I found that true on our '72 220D/8. With Classic Car Wax (which

You want I should change it to white?

It's a template in iWeb I used for a long time. There are others, but they
were all sort of from-froo and I just wanted something simple.

Re: [MBZ] Martha Returns!

I doubt it. After talking to three or four professional detailer, and I use
the term only to describe someone who is making a living doing this, none of
them really seemed interested in recovery work. I suspect there is too much
time required, and it's likely that someone who has a car in this bad of shape
either won't care or doesn't have the money to invest in recovering the finish.

Another aspect to consider that will play out over time is how long the finish
will stay this way. I have no idea if upon exposure to the elements that it may
revert back to the former condition. Hopefully, it will take some time. This
is not something I would want to be doing every month or two (but I would if
necessary.)

The Mercedes Martha Stewart has returned with a vengeance!

See the results of Martha's attack on the finish of the S500, which was so
bad according to one detailing shop that, You're wasting your money trying
to resurrect that.

Re: [MBZ] Martha Returns!

That's what the Collinite 845 is. Well known in the detailing business,
Collinite 845 was originally designed to be used on high voltage insulators,
which have to be kept as clean as possible to minimize collection of dirt which
can allow conductive paths on the surfaces.

It's amazingly good stuff, and while not cheap, a 16 ounce bottle will last
several years or more if you apply it correctly.

Collinite has been around for many years and is pretty much a family business,
a lot like George at Leatherique. Another reason why I like to patronize them.
