We used the Wang word processors at the Interior Dept. back then. They had
some awesome features, e.g. "super copy", although I forget what that

During the 1950s I bought a (Marchant?) hand cranked calculator from a used
equipment store which had a UF Physics Department property tag on it. It must
have been pretty old since electric calculating machines had been around for a
long time. It worked quite well, and I used it for taxes and other numerically
precise jobs, but the slide rule was still the fastest if approximations
sufficed.

I have a number of these machines, procured when in high school for $3
each, or free.
Friden, Marchant, and Monroe. IIRC they cost as much as a car when new.
One Friden
model would do square roots, but I never got one of those. I also have an
HP-35,
given to me some time ago, it lives on the workbench. The calculator I
purchased
for school was an HP-29C, $190 IIRC. Half of a semester's tuition at the
time, it was
a stretch. I still have it, it still works.

Yes, Often I look at the full moon and think about those days, and
often too, about what Jim Lovell (and Fred and Jack) must have thought

I had a minor role in the Apollo 12-17 missions, working at the MSC (now
Johnson) near Houston. We typically wore a white short-sleeve shirt with
narrow tie, dark slacks, and BCDs, for us four-eye types. BCDs (birth-control
devices) were those ugly black plastic government-issue glasses.

Now, when I see the full moon I reflect on that time when Americans had the
stones to go to the moon.

I always wanted to build a hydrogen peroxide rocket - back in my amateur
rocketry days. Only got as far as the sugar and potassium nitrate rockets
(and Estes, of course). Dad had 30% H2O2 in the dental office, and it was
fun to play with, but not concentrated enough to fly anything.

Had I been at work I could have seen it. We saw the last launch they did from
the office (28 stories up about 75 miles away.) You could see the booster
exhaust and the trail of smoke it left for some time.

I’ve seen shuttle launches up close, from about 10 miles away on the side of
the Bee Line Expressway, and you can’t even begin to imagine how loud the
boosters are. I found it interesting that they use the massive amount of water
on the launch pad for sound suppression, not cooling.

Absolutely. As a child of the 60s/70s I was totally dialed into the space
program. Built the models, had the posters on my bedroom walls, read the
books, watched every launch on TV, pretty much vacuumed up everything I could
on the subject. As things were winding down I was getting to an age where I had
other interests like cars and girls...

There were a lot of people in that program with brass balls, for sure. If
there hadn’t been, it wouldn’t have taken place.

Re: [MBZ] OT this is amazingly awesome

The market for it isnt very big, because falcon 9 payload is higher and
satellites are smaller now.

Anyway the live feed from LEO was trippy. Im not sure the tesla ended up in
the correct orbit, but it was still pretty cool. Everybody else in the
space game seems pretty tame by comparison.

Loved the feed going dark from the drone ship when the center booster hit
the water 300 feet away and shrapnel and spray went everywhere. "We lost
the center booster"

Cool when the rocket can crash but the mission is still a success. I think
their overall launch failure rate is still loads higher than ULA, but for
the price difference the clients can probably build another satellite. So
the risk may be worth taking for them, especially if launching several
satellites and spreading the risk over many launches.

Amazing the contrast between Spacex and Tesla right now. CEO is a fairly
no-nonsense lady.

Agreed.

As one of those rocket nerds back in the 70s when Apollo was winding
down and really had nothing exciting to look forward to, who moved on to
other things, I found it incredibly exciting that there are so many
young nerds now excited about space flight and all the technologies that
go along with it.  Considering those software nerds could fly a mission
to Mars with a smartphone (cf. the Apollo guidance computer and how it
compares to a $3 Arduino chip these days) I am both encouraged and
excited with what Musk and others are doing with private efforts to
build rockets and spacecraft.

Those guys back in the 60s were pioneers and considering the tools they
had (slide rules and Luckies and short haircuts and skinny ties on
short-sleeved white shirts), they did an amazing job and yeah I would
have been really worried back then with putting 3 guys on top of the
Saturn stack and sending them off to the Moon.  It is gratifying that
the kids these days have so much more confidence, and so many more tools
and technology, that they can treat it as almost mundane kind of work,
but still be excited about it.

Bravo to Musk and his team.

And yeah, seeing those boosters land side by side while watching the
live vid from them was amazing.  I wish the main booster would have made
it too, but 2 outta 3 ain't bad!

I need to run that vid again with my sound system playing the audio,
maybe hook up the subwoofer...

Watching the two boosters land almost simultaneously back at the Cape was
nothing short of amazing. It’s unfortunate the center booster didn’t make it

The Roadster and Spaceman were very fun and a nice touch. Sure, marketing
for Musk, but more significantly marketing for U.S. of A. and a supreme
testimony to capitalism and free markets when the government allows them
space (pun intended) to succeed.
