Why didn't you buy new lines? IIRC they are about 60 bucks for the pair.

For future reference, the lines are routed very differently, but the newer
lines can be stuck in the older chassis. I will have to fashion a brace as
they are completely wrong in that regard.

Now I just have to decide how to approach the cooler itself. And then of
course the rest of the stuff I "might as well" do... :)

[MBZ] Oil cooler lines

2013-04-20 Thread Tim Crone
I took off the oil cooler lines for my 77 300D. It looks like some threads
stripped, there are probably enough at the bottom to get the oil cooler
back together. There is a fix listed on peachparts that involves tapping
threads for new connectors, has anyone done that?

Also, the lower hose (old style) is NLA. It has a nubby end, the
recommended local hydraulic guy says he can't do it because of how short
the end is. BabyQ is of course out today, his site shows it NLA also.

So... Is there some kind of retrofit? Any ideas? I'd hate to kill the car
over something so trivial.

Re: [MBZ] Oil Cooler Lines

2012-03-07 Thread Barry Stark
Rick -
A couple of ideas. As has been mentioned the oil cooler line nuts screwing
onto the oil cooler fittings can sometimes seize and gall the threads on the
cooler fitting when you try to remove them. If the nut feels like it is
starting to gall stop and whip out your trusty Dremel tool with one of the
abrasive cutting disks mounted. Cut into the nut parallel to the oil line so
you can help relieve the pressure on the threads. You want to weaken the nut
so it will split open. You can stick a blade screwdriver into the cut and
twist it a bit to open up the nut if possible. You want to go slowly as to
try and not cut into the threads on the cooler fitting. The slick fix, if
the threads on the cooler do happen to become compromised, is to saw off the
damaged fitting on the cooler and drill and tap the cooler for a new union
fitting. As I recall from others instructions, as I haven't done this
myself, you can use a fitting like the one on the oil filter housing. You
might find something in the archives about the process. If not in the
okiebenz archives it is likely in the Ritter list archives. If you don't
have access to that list archives let me know and I will search them for
you. Also, when reassembling the clamp that holds the center of the oil
lines at the block, assuming the 123 is like my 126 in that respect, you may
find it difficult to assemble the clamp if you have secured the oil cooler
hose nuts. The easy way is to just start both ends of both hoses just a few
threads so everything is wiggly loose. Once you get the clamp loosely
assembled you can go ahead and tighten up the hose end fittings and finally
the clamp screw. Oh yeah, it seemed to me, at least on my 126, that things
went a bunch easier if I supported the engine and removed the left side
motor mount arm. Now it has been 8 years or more since I did this and memory
being what it is if someone with more recent experience has any corrections
please feel free.

I used ATF/acetone on the fittings the day before I did mine, and the
fittings were undamaged. Counterholding the fittings as has been
describe is very important.

Getting the hard lines out is a bit tedious. I don't recall exactly
what worked.

2012-03-07 Thread Dieselhead
Start soaking the nuts at the oil cooler
yesterday or the day before. If you can clean
off any external oil, and are brave, a short
application of flame wrench on the nuts maybe the
trick that is needed to prevent ruining the oil
cooler.

One other trick is to saw off the ferrules, and
take off the old hose and replace just the hose.
(new hose clamps) That way you don't have to try
to separate the steel nuts off the aluminum oil
cooler threads.
The problem is corrosion of dissimilar metals is
close to a weld, but breaks down readily when
heated red hot or close to red. ~1000º

I think I had to take loose the motor mount and
jack up/support the engine when I did it. Seems
like I took off the motor mount.

It's been a long time since I've done this job (thank goodness!) but I do
recall getting a crows foot 22mm (?) wrench, as the clearance for the line
fittings is really small. And be really, really careful on the oil cooler
fittings, as they are really easy to cross thread and munge up.

Don't ask me how I know...

So I'm convinced I need to replace the oil cooler lines.
Rusty has 4 each upper and lower depending on the engine number. How do I
find that out so I can order the right thing?

Thanks

Re: [MBZ] Oil Cooler Lines (more) & archives

2006-03-06 Thread Richard Murdoch
Thanks to all who replied to my questions about replacing the oil cooler lines
on our 82 300TDt.

Bellsouth had been bouncing my mail even though the box was not nearly full --
thanks to the easy to search archives I was able to find your answers.

Finally got started but have only had a short time here and there to work on
them. The fittings were easier to break loose than I expected. (I had
started to remove the lines from a parts car and they were tough to break
loose.) Being able to get the hood straight up allows plenty of room for a
piece of pipe to lever the wrench for the initial turn.

I have the left motor mount almost off. Tjohn mentioned taking the motor
mounts off. I was thinking that only the left one needs to come off, right?

Re: [MBZ] Oil Cooler Lines

2006-03-05 Thread Tjohn
Mine seeped a bit, then began to leak in earnest before I replaced them.
They pretty quickly got to a point where a 30 min highway drive would
produce a spectacular spray of black oil on the drivers side of the car. I
removed the mounts to do the job, and even then it was unpleasant. I didn't
have any problem unscrewing the lines, but I understand I may have been
lucky in this regard. Not a bad time to replace a leaky oil filter housing
gasket while youre in there.

Re: [MBZ] Oil Cooler Lines (more)

2006-03-03 Thread Richard Murdoch
Excuse the repost but my IPS knocked me off line right after asked about this a
couple days ago.

I bought new oil cooler lines for the 82 300 TDt from Rusty; they arrived
early the next day.

I loosend some of the oil cooler lines on the parts car and they seemed to be
very tightly torqued. Any Idea how to judge how tight to make them?

When I loosened the lower line at the oil filter it looked as if the the nut on
the fitting on the filter was turing as well. Hope I can manage that one from
the underside, there seems to be barely enough room to get one wrench in there
and turn it. Maybe best to cut the line and put a socket over it.

Also, I'm wondering if I can flush the oil cooler with clean oil while the
lines are off? Any more thoughts will be appreciated.

Thanks,
Richard Murdoch

I have no idea how to replace them, but I know that Marshall says they are
designed to leak before they blow and when they do, you empty your engine of
oil very quickly, usually before you know it, and hence will need a new engine.

It's a pain if you try to work around it. I think when I do them on my CD
I might even remove the motor mount arm for extra room. At minimum, the
mount and shock will be out.

I will need to replace them later myself. I found out something that you
might like to look into. I found out that a place my me will reuse the ends
and put new hoses on them a lot cheaper then the price of new ones that I
might order. Just a idea you might want to look into.
If others think this is a bad idea let me know because I am thinking of
doing this.
