Re: [MBZ] Rodbender?

2024-02-13 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
As I recall, there wasn’t anything “official”, but if a car came in under
warranty or close to it with the symptoms, it got replaced.

My former 350SDL got either a crate engine or short block, I couldn’t quite
tell exactly which from the VMI, around 90k.

Correct me on any of this as necessary, my memory is a bit sketchy on these as

Plus, if it’s still registered or will there be Mucho fees to get it out of the

[MBZ] Rodbender question

2010-02-05 Thread W140

My Factory Crated new zero time engine arrived with a blank spot and I
watched the dealer stamp the original serial number on it. So other than all
the 'Factory and Dealer paperwork and Records' I fail to see how you can tell
which engine is in the car.
Now maybe if the engine was replaced by other than a Dealer and the engine was
other than a Factory crated new engine would it have a different number.
Soo, I hang on to my paperwork, altho' the Dealer and factory have the
information on file.

So much for 'Numbers Matching' at a Benz Auction.

My other car is a 1954 Nash Metropolitan, I have factory documentation on it,
comes from British Heritage Museum.

We are told that 'Back in the day' , the manufacturers would send out work
crews to up date when dealers had too much of last years stock. This usually
simply required a new identification tag riveted on and an adjustment of
paperwork. There were lots of new Metropolitans sold 3 years after production
stopped!

Re: [MBZ] Rodbender question

2010-02-04 Thread Dillon, Meade M CIV SPAWARSYSCEN-ATLANTIC, 53310
I think that a factory rebuild or replacement engine will have a new
serial number, which you can compare to the original vehicle data card.
The EPC data card may or may not have been updated. The dealer may or
may not have records, depending on if a dealer installed the engine.
Bottom line is that the seller should have paperwork to show the
installation, and if he doesn't then assume original engine and price
accordingly. If seller is ignorant then you can try to pursue via
dealer and EPC and maybe the original vehicle data card, if available.

I've also heard that a replacement engine (not a rebuild) will have a
blank spot with no number.

I go with 'ask the dealer'.
Serial numbers not matching does not mean the current engine in the car escapes
rodbender status. It could have come from a salvage vehicle, or worse yet, have
been rebuilt by incompetents.

Re: [MBZ] Rodbender question

2010-02-04 Thread OK Don
I bought a factory engine for the '76 300D once - they were on sale,
supposedly one of the last two in the Chicago warehouse. It had a blank spot
where the serial number was supposed to be. I heard somewhere that a dealer
was supposed to stamp the original engines number there. Can't verify that
though ---
I was able to use the receipt and tag from that engine to get a decent
settlement from the insurance company when the rusted POS was totalled by a
drunk driver. (The 115 was parked at the time).

I think that a factory rebuild or replacement engine will have a new

The EPC data card may or may not have been updated. The dealer may or
may not have records, depending on if a dealer installed the engine.
Bottom line is that the seller should have paperwork to show the
installation, and if he doesn't then assume original engine and price
accordingly. If seller is ignorant then you can try to pursue via
dealer and EPC and maybe the original vehicle data card, if available.

I've also heard that a replacement engine (not a rebuild) will have a
 blank spot with no number.

I don't know if someone else has already answered this but, the term comes from
tendency of certain MB diesel engines to bend the rods. This occurs on the 126
diesel in 1991 and then on 140 Chassis diesels. The 126 is called the 350SDL
(it has the 3.5 diesel engine). I think the 3.5 is a bored out version of the
3.0 diesel that was in the 87 300D. The 140 Chassis is called 300SD or 350SD
depending on the year. Regardless of its nomenclature, the 3.5 diesel engine
is the rodbender - even if the car is called a 300SD in the 140 Chassis. Don't
get that confused with the 126 300SD. That was a fantastic engine and a great
car.

Many (including folks on this list) theorize that the real cause of the problem
is the head gasket which fails at #1 cylinder. Then, when coolant gets into
the cylinder it causes hydropressure which bends the #1 rod. Others believe
that the rods are the problem and the head gasket problem is a separate failure
and is not the cause of the rod problem. Dr. Marshall Booth was a previous
lister who said that the only way to correct the rodbender problem was to have
a total factory rebuild. Others have said that you can just replace the rods
with the new beefier versions if you have not already worn the bore/cylinders
to an oval shape. Rodbenders are characterized by increasing oil consumption
and eventually failure of pistons if the problem is not corrected. It is
possible to replace the rods, sleeve the cylinders and probably correct the
problem.

We will know more when Kaleb gets his car figured out because I think he is
just going to do the headgasket and replace #1 rod.

Speaking of this, Kaleb, I have some anecdotal evidence to support your theory.
I was asking my indy about your idea. He said he had a customer that did the
same thing. He replaced only #1 rod and it worked fine. Now, the data is
limited because the customer ended up trading the car off after 40,000 miles.
But, in the 40,000 miles, he had no catastrophic failures. He did have some
oil consumption, but nothing too bad.

Rod bender refers to the later OM603.xx engine used in the 1990-95
diesel w126 and w140 of the SD class. The rods would fail and lead to

2007-11-08 Thread dave walton
Local dealer quoted me $140 for a rod, then charged me $190 when I
went to pick it up. I replaced 3 lifters and a few bolts and got to
buy lots of new tools that I'll never use again.
Overall it was a good experience. Cylinders were okay. But I know it
is a ticking time bomb because there was no way to grind off enough
metal to match the weight of the other rods. Probably should have
replaced all of them - but there are about 20 other things that should
have been replaced as well which would have cost $1000's more. When it

Re: [MBZ] rodbender question

2007-11-08 Thread Mitch Haley

If the cylinders and pistons are good, you can fix it for something like
$250 a rod (x6) plus gaskets, rings, etc. I'd budget $2000-2500 if I
were doing all the labor myself.
AFAIK, only MBZ seems to be able to redo the block so that the engine
will last hundreds of kilomiles after the rebuild. Not sure what a
reman engine costs in today's worthless greenbacks.

In my case - no. Although I don't have a clue how to interpret leak
down test results, so I did not bother.

You have to pull the head and measure how much each piston protrudes
above the block at the top of it's stroke. Removing the vacuum pump
makes it easier to turn the engine by hand if you leave the timing
chain attached. It's actually rather dangerous if you don't.
The current head gasket has more reinforcement at the oil channel in
front of the #1 cylinder, so replacing it is a good thing. It's a
common failure point. 100% of the rodbenders I've owned experienced
that failure ( 1 out of 1 :-).

Can you take off the valve springs with a cylinder at TDC and measure
the length of the protruding valve stem?
Maybe pull the prechambers and look at the cylinder walls with a borescope?
If you've got crosshatching all the way around, you know you haven't egged

Maybe stick the borescope through the drain plug and do a visual on the rods?

Re: [MBZ] rodbender question

2007-11-08 Thread Peter Frederick
Check the turbo seals -- lots of oil in the intake with no significant
blowby means the bearings in the turbo are shot, allowing the shaft to
eat the seals. Lotta oil up the intake, usually, followed by serious
oil smoke out the back on acceleration. Usually accompanied by a
lazy turbo because it doesn't rotate a low load.

Pull the intake hose and spin the turbo by hand (engine off, please!).
Any axial play (a bit of side to side is OK, audible clunk is not) or
stiffeness in rotation is a bad turbo. Should spin easily with finger
pressure and continue for a bit when you let go, although diesel turbos
are stiffer than gasser ones for some reason.

I seem to remember something about NOT sleeving the 350, but the 300 is
sleeved at the factory. New sleeves, rods, pistons, and bearings were
$5000 six or so years ago when I thought I might need to rebuild my
603. More now.

Engine can be rebuilt, but it will likely cost more than a new one,
those piston sets are EXPENSIVE, and so are the new rods (you can't get
single replacements for the old ones, the only available rods --the
good ones -- are 50 gr or so heavier and you must do all six.)

Factory long block is around $7000.
