Yes, Acronis was one of the early true image backup solutions, as I
recall. Ideal for taking a live system to a backup.

I want to put a copy of the main computers drive alongside Windows 7 on
 another computer using Virtualbox.
It would seem that downloading the whole image of the C drive on the
external HD to Virtualbox on another computer would be no different than
downloading it to an empty formatted hd on a new computer. I thought
perhaps that someone on the list might have done that since Virtualbox and
Acronis Home Office seem to be very popular.

I have not done it, but Acronis should come with a restore CD. If you
boot that using Virtualbox, and then patch the USB port to the
Virtualbox instance, it should work fine. [I know how to do that in
VMWare but not Virtualbox, sorry.]

If I can later set up Acronis to run on a VIrtualbox OS and back it up to an
external HD, that will be great but not absolutely necessary.

You could, but you should probably just copy snapshots (or whatever)
from Virtualbox onto the hard drive. Presumably you're using Acronis
or whatever to backup the Virtualbox host. That way you don't have to
take two steps to get your systems running again, though you lose the
ability to do incremental/differential backups so that may be a
consideration.

Downloading VirtualBox give you the framework. Inside the
framework you setup guests. Each one thinks it is a
stand-alone computer - but it is an totally empty computer
until you install a OS (Win XP, Mac, or whatever). Then it
boots and runs and the OS thinks it's in a metal box with

This does mean you will need to install an OS on the guest,

I had to Google to find out what Acrunis is. It seems to be
cloud storage. So... I think the answer is yes - but I don't
quite get the phrase remote HD running Acronis.

A VirtualBox guest is effectively it's own computer. The
memory, harddrive, network card, etc. are borrowed from the
host but the guest OS is typically totally unaware. So if the
Acronis thing would work with a normal computer, then there is a
very high probability it will work with a VirtualBox guest.

Anyway, I found an iso of a win7 and got it to install and run in VB but
it seems to be a 30 day trial version and as such it will be easier for
me to just boot into 'my' XP and use quickbooks there, which is really
the only reason I need wincrap, well I also have to log into the tax
department to tell them what I have been up to every 3 months.
I tried to install quickbooks via WINE but that is just about impossible
for people who know what they are doing, so I have got no chance.
Twas more of an 'see if I can do it exercise', rather than something I
have to do, Fay doesn't understand that and is a bit mad at me cause I

You should be able to find the various isos somewhere to make a boot

use your valid code to make M$FT happy. I did that on an old laptop

A little help please. While the experts are discussing OS and drive issues, I
have a problem to solve. I used to do this stuff years ago, but things have

drive in a Compaq that has a C: partition and a D: restore partition. It is a
smaller and very noisy drive. I have a second Sata drive that is much larger

Roger,

There are any number of ways to accomplish this, but the best thing to do is
find a good software program and use it.

Clonzilla is an open source freeware means of doing it, but you have to
download an ISO and burn it to a CD which you then boot from.

EaseUS is a freeware utility that does the same without having to boot into a
separate OS.

I have used Clonezilla but not EaseUS.

 Hendrik
who is trying to get virtualbox up and running

Are your having difficulty with VirtualBox? Or the guest OS?
My experience with it has been quite good. USB, serial,
ethernet, and all software I've tried to use work well in a MS
Win guest on my Linux host.

I'm even doing some squirrelly things with networking.
