Re: [MBZ] Antenna Question
I was planning to start testing today to see if the antenna was getting 12V but when my wife got home last night and turned the engine off I heard the familar sound of the antenna retracting. As suddenly as the problem started, it disappeared. Perhaps it's one of those electronic glitches Marshall mentioned? Well my story is not that radical. I gave up on the made in china motor that some PO had used to replace the Hirschman. I bought a manual telescoping antenna at my local radio shop for 19.99. Bolted right up to he rear fender and plugged right into the original MB coaxial cable. I never retract it but I could as it goes flush with the fender if I am in a bad neighborhood in Boston. Re: [MBZ] Antenna Question + a little story
Well Zoltan, we only differ on one fine point I wouldn't undo any of those badass things I did when I was a young buck back then. They were fun - yeah making life miserable for a day for some whining grownups who were having no fun at all - which made it all the more fun. Like you say - the cycle of life - old as defecating. When I get pissed off now as I look at my broken antennae I smile ... and think how to beat the little bastards by sticking a cheap shaft in the gaping hole in the rear fender of my 126 - it's a metaphorical thing - total satisfaction ... but I understand that many don't understand. The Harley? Well these material things - no matter how much we pay for them ... from your Harley to my Maserati bi-turbo a few years ago ... found stripped to a frame - dead ass on the street in Roxbury - looking like it just rolled off part of a Ford assembly line in Motorcity - as my friend once said as we stood smoking cigarettes in front of the Parker House in Boston and a bourgeoismobile - a Bugatti no less - pulls up to a waiting doorman under the canopy - my compa takes a glance and says, 'just another sled' - the Harleys and the biturbos come and go just like our tubes of toothpaste. I have as much fun in my all-beat-to-hell F-150 pickup crowned with loudspeakers leading anti-war marches in Boston as I do gear-jamming my old 944 turbo in the writhing back roads of New Hampshire on a sunny day. Once they threw a cement block through the back window of my 944 outside my window as I slept away. I drove it without a window for a few weeks in the rain feeling like I was in an australian movie - more fun than a man should have. Re: [MBZ] Antenna Question
Marshall Trampas, Unfortunately (or fortunatley depending on your point of view) there is no seperate rocker switch for the antenna on my 300D - it's evidently hard-wired into the radio - unlike many MBs Normally, I turn the engine off and the radio shuts down after a 5 sec pause - and the antenna starts retracting at that time. And the reverse is true -- when I crank up - the radio comes on with the engine and the antenna extends - It worked fine until I noticed it yesteday - maybe it's just a coincidence that the motor stopped working when the battery was drained? Your car was manufactured after the '90 midyear replacement of the rocker switch that older Mercedes have used for decades. You MIGHT try removing fuse(s) that supply power to the antenna or unplug the multiconductor plug on the antenna and then reattach it after 30-60 seconds. It's control is now entirely electronic - and I regret that electronics in Mercedes cars are noticeably less reliable after 15 years and deteriorate rapidly after that. Re: [MBZ] Antenna Question
Your antenna might be going down too low, or it's had the topmost part cut off. If it's anything like my 84 300D, the inner plastic liners to the trunk pop right out - they're only held in by their shape. I don't think there's any adjustment, other than a new antenna mast. If your reception stinks, a new mast is around $40 from rusty. On 2/21/06, [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi there, When the antenna is raised, it looks normal. How do the interior covers in the trunk come out for access to the antenna and other stuff behind the covers? Re: [MBZ] Antenna Question
Thanks Sunil, I looked at the tip when it was raised so the top has not been cut off. Sounds like I should probably replace the mast - my reception isn;t that good - I plan to check the wire between the antenna and the radio for continuity. The one in my 240D was broken and I replaced it - made a *world* of difference! Now it pulls in really far away stations - Sincerely, Larry T ('74 911, '67 MGB, 91 300D Turbo) A Blood Test for your oil - www.youroil.net For Test Results http://members.rennlist.com/oil Weber Carb Stuff http://members.rennlist.com/webercarbs http://members.rennlist.com/my_911/Index.htm For my Paint Job Info - Original Message - From: Sunil Hari [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Mercedes Discussion List [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, February 21, 2006 10:30 PM Subject: Re: [MBZ] Antenna Question Your antenna might be going down too low, or it's had the topmost part cut off.
