Yes, the DIY kind. Save some money for house repairs, do them as needed. If
you could save money with the insurance, they would be out of business.

Re: [MBZ] Happy Chillin' Thanksgiving

2017-11-24 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Due to the age of my house (coming up in 20 years) a lot of major systems are
getting to the point of requiring replacement. Just did the AC in March of this
year, probably going to need to do the roof in another 2-3 years. We replaced
all the major appliances when we moved in roughly six years ago.

When the home warranty people looked at our house they saw all of this, and
quoted us accordingly. If my memory serves me correctly they were wanting
nearly $200/month six years ago. Do the math, we would have lost money big time.

This is nothing more than a form of insurance. They’re betting you won’t need
it, you’re betting you will.

In this case, we came out ahead significantly.

Nahh. Cheap Canadian bastards (parent company of the utility is now based out
of Halifax, NS) dumped all of the energy conservations spiffs last summer when
they took over.

I’m installing it. While plumbing is one thing I really, really hate doing,
since this is in the garage I’m far more comfortable with it since if something
goes south there won’t be any damage.

Re: [MBZ] Happy Chillin' Thanksgiving

2017-11-23 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Here are the numbers based on an A.O. Smith 50 gallon hybrid versus a 50 gallon
conventional:

Hybrid/Conventional

Annual energy cost: $85/$307

First hour rating (gallons): 66/75

Cost: $1284/$672 (local sales tax included)

Warranty: 10 years/12 years

UEF: 3.42/0.95

No tax credits - they lapsed in 2016. Dang it.

I don’t know - the hybrid is pretty compelling. I can let Lowe’s carry the cost
for 24 months as well at no interest, and I get cool air out of the deal with
the hybrid.

I’m thinking the hybrid. At roughly $200/year savings the difference will be
recouped in three years. In six years it will have effectively paid for itself
in energy savings over a standard electric water heater.

Let’s let Mitch digest those numbers and correct me if necessary.

Will your electric company subsidize a new efficient water heater? Only thing
is around here you have to get s contractor to install it which kinda eats any
savings over DIY

Odd. I _just_ replaced mine. 50-gallon Rheem conventional electric.
$400. (22 years ago I spent $300 on the same thing.) They offered an
intriguing stainless-steel option at around a 50% premium, but the 2-week
delivery time was a deal killer.

That's pretty compelling, how trustworthy is that payback figure? If your
numbers are good, the hybrid can pay for its entire _replacement_ in only
two years, against your other option. Is it likely to last two years?

I’m just concerned about reliability and the controls - if they flake out

A valid concern. But, it's a _hybrid_ heater. There's still a
conventional element or two in there.

2017-11-23 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
True. It could have totally crapped out and that would be ugly. Not so for
me, as I can do a Navy shower if necessary.

I’m just trying to decide whether or not to go with the heat pump water heater
($1200) or a conventional electric heater ($600-$700).

The hybrid heater will pay for itself in a year or less, along with lowering
temps in the garage since it’s working like an AC unit in reverse and dumping
cold air into the garage. There is also a tax credit for it this year, too.
I’m just concerned about reliability and the controls - if they flake out
nothing happens. At least with a conventional water heater you can still have
one element working (like mine right now) and get some warm water.

Anyone out there have one of these heat pump water heaters, or know someone who
does? I’ve looked at them closely over the past 4-5 years and they seem to be
pretty reliable. A O Smith seems to be the leader as far as sales. GE was
doing them but I don’t see them any more.

You are lucky. It could have died the day you are riding your bicycle
and get hit by a sprinter van (Mercedes content) and really really
badly want a hot shower or soak in the tub but all you can get is cold
water.

Be thankful for tepid.
