Its also worth noting that even not very good v6 engines like the 2.8l
in my '88 GMC can be quite durable. Mine made it to 150,000 miles
without ever being opened. That includes a hard life being driven by a
poor college student and the predations of the an 18-23 "mechanic".

There are several examples of V8s and V6s that represent extremely durable and 
reliable engines.   The GM 350 (rocket) that was used for decades was/is an 
extremely durable engine -- especially considering the technology at the time.  
 The GM 3800 v6 is (in my opinion) one of the best engines ever made - 
certainly the best American made engine.  While I agree the V configuration is 
not as simple as a straight engine, the design has proven to be extremely 
durable, reliable, and as it was improved and updated it became a world class 
engine.  BUT, I do get your point about straight engines.  The Mercedes inline 
6, the BMW inline 6, the AMC 4.0 straight six, etc are all fantastic engines.

W210 quality. Chrysler hadn’t gotten ahold of Daimler at that time.  More 
plastic than earlier models, but these have the reliability and longevity of 
the W210 chassis’ cars for the most part.

2003 and later were W220 build quality.

They fixed the top and raised the price $300.  I’m thinking of going with cash 
in hand and offering them $3000, as they offered it to me last week after the 
top was repaired for $3600.  It looks like fun.
