The photos show the problem I hope - the WSM may say the cover only applies
to the 201, you can see there's a cover partly over the ign switch on my 91.
Don't know if the photos will be stripped - if they are see the photos I
sent directly to you will work I hope.

The photo dscn1442 has an arrow showing the shoulder which is covered by the
plastic covering I am having trouble with. The black plastic seems to be
partly covering the tumbler insert.

I keep saying it's plastic but it may be rubber or metal.

Larry,

Can you see the two small holes where you insert the 2mm pins? They are at
the edge of the silver metal portion of the face of the lock. If you can
see the holes, you're ready to remove the cylinder lock, assuming you've got
the trim piece off and the key turned to position one. My FSM says that the
Escrutheon that you remove with the small screwdriver is only on the 201
models. The outer cap of the lock cylinder assembly, rubber coated, comes
off with the cylinder...

2011-06-26 Thread Larry

Thanks Max!
Yes, I got the plastic trim piece off without a problem -- and the 2
holes are easy to see. The tool I made goes in easily and I can feel it
moving the locking pin to release, the key is in position 1 (the only
position (I think) that allows the tool to enter all the way) - and
then I am jiggling and pulling the key with the tool inserted it but doesn't
budge.

One more question - I was using the new tumbler assy. to see the
locking tab and the new one only has the locking tab on one side. Is that
how the OE tumbler works - with a lock device on 1 side only?

Thanks for pointing out that W201 comment - missed it -

Thanks for help - I'll take another whack at it --

Yes, the tumbler has a single lock, and so does the cover, that's why

Make sure you have a taper on the ends of the pins, otherwise they
just stop when you hit the spring(s) and do not release the locks.

The only thing holding the parts in place are the two locking

Yes, file the ends into a wedge shape - about a 45 degree diagonal on the
inside, so the unlocking tool/pins can ride up onto the spring-loaded
locking mechanism(s) in the tumbler cylinder and push them inward as the
unlocking tool is inserted. A blunt end on the unlocking tool/pins can get
hung up on an obstruction and not push the locking pins inward.

(I made an unlocking tool from a piece of white coat hanger maybe 9 to 10
inches long; 'bent it into a U shape with equal-length legs and the base of
the U about that of distance between the two insertion holes in face of the
tumbler/key assembly; 'filed a wedge shape on inner sides of the tool at
ends of each leg to make the ends slide more easily up onto the locking pins
as they are pushed downward/inward to their unlocked position; removed
paint from first coupla inches at both ends of the tool to make it fit
insertion holes more easily.)

Subject: [MBZ] Ignition Switch replacement 91 300D W124

Hi Gang -
Just rec’d a new Ign. Sw. with Key from Rusty and after reading the WSM I
thought I knew how to replace it!

Bt, Wrong. I was able to remove the surrounding trim but rubber boot
was a challenge. There’s no way it’s coming off.

The WSM says to remove the trim with a small screw driver but it’s more
than that. It’s more of a rubber boot that extends from the keyhole to
the tumbler housing. The WSM makes it look like the boot is just around
the key hole. Maybe the manual is for a earlier/later model?

Anyway, I put the surround back in place and I’m pretty sure the tumbler
assy. will last for a while.

Any ideas?

Thx

2011-06-24 Thread OK Don
I followed the FSM when I replaced it in the '92, and I recall that it was
just as described. Beyond that, I don't remember enough to help you ---
sorry.
