Just print two halves and glue them together with plexus. Or put some
plexus in a mold and jam the key down into it. Or do the same thing with
epoxy with some milled glass fibers or similar. Done.

I believe that could be done.   That would be a good way to go with the
carbon fiber filament. build a fixture onto the base plate that you
could clamp the key in, then hit GO for program #2.

Program 2 would be just an inverse of program 1.

Hmmm - could you program the printer to stop at the appropriate point for
you to put the metal key in place, then let the printer continue and make

The base is heated. The default base for most printers is a plastic coated
surface that’s sort of bumpy, for lack of a better description. I replaced mine
with a sheet of glass for better adhesion. A quick spritz of “Aqua Net” makes
things stick just fine.

Nozzle temp too cool, or feed rate too high.

And yes, you have to make accommodations for the type of filament you’re using.
It’s always good to get comfortable with a particular type of filament so you

Also, nozzles that plug up etc.
Many variables for different sorts of filament.

Re: [MBZ] Replacement Key Head for 124

2020-01-14 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I had a print made of a Raspberry Pi case in the shape of an Atari 800. I
spent a ton of time filling the grooves from the print material and then
priming. Then I foolishly tried to help the primer dry faster with the heat
gun. The print sagged and is now the wrong shape. Its been sitting staring at
me for most of a year. I *think* I could massage it back into the right shape
but lost interest...

Sure. Send me the files and I’ll knock them out.

Do understand that there are a wide range of materials available for 3D
printing. Look here:

https://smile.amazon.com/s?k=3d+printing+filament=2JF2L95MP97R2=3d+printing%2Caps%2C258=nb_sb_ss_i_2_11

Look down at the choices under “3D Printing Materials”. There are a number of
different materials to print with, all of which have different characteristics
depending on what you’re printing. The most common material is PLA, but it’s
probably not ideal for something like a key head. You can get filament that has
real wood in it to look wood grained, for example, along with all sorts of
other stuff.

Sounds like I need to find (or create) the files to make the two halves of
the key head and send them down to you for printing.

Re: [MBZ] Replacement Key Head for 124

2020-01-14 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I got a printer courtesy of a credit card scam someone tried to accomplish on
my youngest son. His credit card got compromised and someone ordered two 3D
printers with it. The bank reversed the fraudulent charges and he thought that
was it, not knowing what they were for. A few weeks later two 3D printers show
up at the house from some company in Taiwan. He contacted the company and the
credit card people, and both of them said to keep them as I suspect it wouldn’t
have been worth it to ship them back.

He didn’t want them so I kept one and gave the other to a coworker’s dad who is
a retired aerospace engineer. I think it’s an Ender 3 or something like that.

You don’t really have to have any design abilities. Just go to Thingverse or
any number of other web sites that host 3D printer files and start searching.
The stuff you’ll find is amazing, and the materials to make them are relatively
cheap. There are a bunch of Mercedes related things on Thingverse.

I haven’t done anything significant with my printer, but it’s fun to tinker
with. Most of what I’ve made so far are enhancements for the printer itself.

Mitch - yes, Wilton made one from wood, for his 300D, and that ignition
cylinder is now in my long languishing cabriolet, and I have the key too. It is
very nice, I simply don't have time to replicate it.

Maybe Floyd can set up his DIY CNC machine to cut a batch from wood?

I have run one of those aluminum key heads on a 123 key for a year or two
and aside from the black color wearing off the corners it is as good as the
day I put it on. I agree the price is steep. I was going to have a
machinist friend do a run in part because my mechanic always comments on
how nice it is. The mechanic is an older german guy who does a lot of high
dollar 50s 300sl etc cars and is not easily impressed.

For $30-40, I'd take the time to make one out of Walnut (didn't Wilton do this?)
or carbon fiber cloth. I think the carbon weave would be an interesting
variation on the texture of the original. Maybe reinforce the original with
carbon and epoxy (probably UV resistant epoxy) and vacuum bag it?
The issue with carbon would be not having any loose ends sticking through the
epoxy, carbon slivers are no fun.
