I had a tire come apart on me on the truck. I went back and picked up most
of the pieces I could find, as a courtesy. The spare was _very_ important
that day.
The tire, coming apart, trashed the sheet metal behind that wheel.

The touareg had the collapsible spare and an air pump. Seemed like a good
compromise.

Land Rovers apparently get better mileage with the spare on the hood. So
perhaps that is a model to follow in this weight-and/or-fuel-saving age.

How often have you used your insurance policy?

I run out of fingers and toes if I try to count the number of
people I have helped on the side of the road with a flat tire.
Most had spares.  30 minute max and they are on their way.  Those
without...  I carry lots of extra stuff with me, but not spare
tires for other cars!

A flat tire is an annoyance when there is a spare - but a real
predicament if there isn't one.

I may not live quite so far "out there" as Grant - but it's far
enough out that cell service isn't certain and it's a looong walk.

I will always have 1 (or more) spare tires for the same reason I
always carry car parts and car tools.

I have actually used my spares on many many occasions. The only time I needed
AAA, was when I found that I did not have the proper lug wrench in the car.
Somehow a 19mm got into the roll.

I do see a few pristine spares living in the trunk at PnP every so often. It
is rare enough, that I keep reminding myself that it would take a very long
time for me to find a full set worth. Thus, the pristine spares remain at PnP.
I do not understand why the prep boys do not remove these things when they
decide to save the road worn rims for retail. I would purchase five wheels
instead of only four, given the opportunity.

It seems like the cell phone has replaced the spare tire like the quik lube has
replaced the drain pan.

I just thought it odd that KIA, Hyundai, and Mercedes seemed to have eliminated
the spares from pretty much their entire line-ups.

Now that I think about it, the Korean cars are supposed to be cheap, and maybe
MBZ is supposed to be owned by people who pay others to fix their tires for
them? Even so, I'd rather pay to have my spare installed than to pay to have it
put on a flatbed and ride to the tire store in a filthy wrecker cab.

Mitch.
