Totalitarian dictatorship needs at least one enemy strong enough to
force the country to band together. Orwell got that right in '1984',
with a perpetual state of warfare. If the war ended, you just started
another war, and changed the history books to reflect the fact that
your new enemy was always the enemy.

When your candidate for President openly insults and denigrates half
the voting age population, your party has, as they say, "jumped the
shark". Scapegoating can work, it did for Hitler, but only if the
people you're attacking are a tiny minority and a majority of the
voting public supports your attacks. You try to make enemies out of
40-50% of the voters, and you're committing political suicide, even if
98% of the media elites cheer you on while you're doing it.

Last Presidential election was the first since 2000 that I wouldn't have voted
none of the above if the choices were Republican, Democrat and none of the
above. Mainly because I was tired of politicians and all the establishment
politicians of both sides were united in opposition to one of the 2016
candidates, partly because that candidate was saying a lot of the right things,
even if he didn't really mean them.

Not harsh enough.
We need an entry on our ballot for "None of the above". If a plurality of votes
are for none of the above we run the election again but those two idiots can't
run. If a majority of voters choose none of the above we run the election again
and those two absolute mouth breathing turdburgers can't ever run for anything
again, not even dog catcher...
In the last election I'd have voted none of the above.

Wealth is not created by goobers, or by shysters, or printing fiat
currency. (Or by theft by goobers or other thieves) Wealth is created

It comes down to (in part) understanding wealth, and were does it come

Some believe that there is a limited amount of wealth, and so the struggle
becomes "get my fair share".

I believe that wealth is created, and the basic conditions required are
liberty and land.

Anybody willing to run for office is by definition unqualified and
shouldn't be trusted.
Our system is totally screwed, I'm in favor of changing the
congressional service cycle to a 6 month period where congress WILL be
in session, 10 hours a day, 5 days a week, no flying home on the
weekend. They will eat in mess halls just like the military does, if
its good enough for our fighting men and women its good enough for
them. They'll live in military barracks for the same reason. This is
government service after all and I think we've gotten away from the
service part.
Not being present for any vote without reason is the same as being
AWOL and will be judged harshly. All congressional staffs get cut in
half, no exceptions. Upon leaving the congress they get the same
retirement a enlisted service member would get based on their years of
service again if its good enough for the military its good enough for
everybody...

That'd change the system in a hurry.

Hear hear!
I always vote the person although sadly my choices have been lacking. Very
occasionally do I get to vote for somebody I think is worth it. Angus King when
he was governor of Maine comes to mind. I'm not super excited about his time in
the Senate but he's not my senator...
I'm kind of liking Susan Collins at the moment too. She went to high school
with my aunt.

We could abolish political parties, but it would be like asking politicians not
to unionize against their employers, the citizens of this country.

Instead of the parties telling us which two candidates we get to 'choose' from,
we could just elect people instead of party affiliates.
And instead of the politicians' labor unions taking sides on issues, our

Anybody willing to run for office is by definition unqualified and shouldn't be
trusted.
Our system is totally screwed, I'm in favor of changing the congressional
service cycle to a 6 month period where congress WILL be in session, 10 hours a
day, 5 days a week, no flying home on the weekend. They will eat in mess halls
just like the military does, if its good enough for our fighting men and women
its good enough for them. They'll live in military barracks for the same
reason. This is government service after all and I think we've gotten away from
the service part.
Not being present for any vote without reason is the same as being AWOL and
will be judged harshly. All congressional staffs get cut in half, no exceptions.
Upon leaving the congress they get the same retirement a enlisted service
member would get based on their years of service again if its good enough for
the military its good enough for everybody...
That'd change the system in a hurry.

from taxes using old Mercedes.

This behavior seems to me to be a perfectly natural reaction to obscure,
arcane, irrational, and confiscatory tax policies based on a belief that some
substantial portion of a corporation’s or individual’s earnings or wealth
belongs to the government. I blame no one but the elected fools (or any other
fools) who establish tax laws without considering the downstream effects of
their brilliance.
