Stickers are now available from the dealers for most models back to 1990. I'm
going over today at lunch to get some keys ordered and pick up some parts. I'll

Speaking of ID'ing cars... When taking long drives in the wee hours, has anyone
(else) taken to guessing car make/model etc by the head/tail lights?

It does have some practical purpose... I bet that you learn to spot American
SUV's (particularly Ford) and American full-size sedans first...

Supposedly its more temperature stable. All air is mostly nitrogen anyway...

I think the bigger return is supposedly that the nitrogen is dry so the

*The big picture:*

 * Every year in the U.S., an average of more than 100,000 people are

.
 * Every day in the U.S., an average of 289 people are shot. Eighty-six
of them die: 30 are murdered, 53 kill themselves, two die
accidentally, and one is shot in a police intervention, the Brady
   Campaign

 reports.
 * Between 2000 and 2010, a total of 335,609 people died from guns --
more than the population of St. Louis, Mo. (318,069), Pittsburgh
   (307,484), Cincinnati, Ohio (296,223), Newark, N.J. (277,540), and

 * One person is killed by a firearm every 17 minutes, 87 people are

   (source: CDC)

*Homicides by weapon:*

 * Handguns comprised 72.5 percent of the firearms used in murder and
non-negligent manslaughter incidents in 2011; 4.1 percent were with

Perhaps, but only a vanishingly small number are murdered by people who are
legally entitled to possess a firearm. And more are killed by baseball bats

*The big picture:*

  * Every year in the U.S., an average of more than 100,000 people are
shot, according to The Brady Campaign To Prevent Gun Violence

.
  * Every day in the U.S., an average of 289 people are shot. Eighty-six
of them die: 30 are murdered, 53 kill themselves, two die
accidentally, and one is shot in a police intervention, the Brady
Campaign

 reports.
  * Between 2000 and 2010, a total of 335,609 people died from guns --
more than the population of St. Louis, Mo. (318,069), Pittsburgh
(307,484), Cincinnati, Ohio (296,223), Newark, N.J. (277,540), and
Orlando, Fla. (243,195) (sources: CDF

,
U.S. Census ; CDC
)
  * One person is killed by a firearm every 17 minutes, 87 people are
killed during an average day, and 609 are killed every week.
(source: CDC)

*Homicides by weapon:*

  * Handguns comprised 72.5 percent of the firearms used in murder and
non-negligent manslaughter incidents in 2011; 4.1 percent were with
shotguns; 3.8 percent were with rifles; 18.5 percent were with
unspecified firearms.

I still think that bullet proof shelving should be installed in all retail

So, how did MB change it after 74? The AC system in my 76 is pretty basic.
I wouldn't have thought they would have changed anything much before
they went from the 115 to the 123 models?

Any ideas?

I replaced a W114 blower motor in a 1970 250C. I still have the scars on my
hands to show for it.

After that experience I found a number of creative ways to resurrect the fans
on these cars if they weren't completely kaput. Fortunately, I never had a

Short answer: Deterrent.

The OC guys say they live happier lives never getting mugged in the first place
because the muggers pick a soft target.

The CC guys say they've got the element of surprise when somebody tries to mug
them not knowing they're armed. They also believe that when making contact with
a criminal who decided when and where to jump you, he's the one with the element
of surprise in his favor, you've just got the disadvantage of trying to draw
from inside your clothes while his weapon is already deployed.

There's at least $5k worth of work needed just to make it safe to drive,
including reassembling the dash but not repainting the body. "Needs a
tuneup" probably translates to "needs a valve job". If it's green it would
look awesome repainted, but by then we're in the upper brackets.

Re: [MBZ] Testing Prius

2014-09-09 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes

How can I identify the [apple] variety just from the fruit itself?
They are a crisp, juicy, tart
reddish/green apple perfect for pies. Excellent flavor and not of a
common

variety.

When do they ripen? That's usually a big clue.

I'm sure there is at least one heritage and heirloom apple site on the
internet, with pictures.

You can indeed identify your tree by the apples.

My boss up in Canada had some trees up the hill behind the house that
I think were SnowQueen or Famouse (sp) -- one of the original named
apples from ether England or France. The house was originally built
before the American Revolution (Sailor's Encampment on St. Joseph's
Island, Ontario), and I suspect from the condition and appearent age
of the trees, they had been there since the place was built.

Bright but darkish red skin with pronounced red streaks in the flesh,
small, and the best tasting apples I've ever eaten.

More than likely there is an issue with the D-jet, perhaps needs new
trigger points?
Might be alright if you want a project and if the body is 100% rust free
(although me thinks the seller would have mentioned that as a selling
point, so you can assume there is tin worm), otherwise that other one
would be better value but generally like most ads, you only hear half
the story.

look awesome repainted, but by then we're in the upper brackets.

Re: [MBZ] nitrogen Jackpot!

2014-09-09 Thread Hendrik and Fay via Mercedes
I would say that for a car on a public road N is a waste of money. They
use it a lot in motorsports where a psi or two can make a difference to
handling and the tires get pretty hot.

I'm sure that's how it works.

Well perhaps it may improve mileage by .03% but it's more to do with
looks and styling, giving it a more sporty look, rather than utilitarian
workhorse.

Hydraulic or air cylinders?

And the winch? Must be some way to make an anchor that you could drive
into the ground so you could pull yourself free. I used to work with a
fellow who was an avid hunter and fisherman. He drove 4 WD Suburbans
and said if he had to choose he would take the winch rather than the 4WD.

Most places we go theres not much to winch to. More useful is the

I am considering a new bumper though, the Dodge has a huge chin and a
plastic air dam very close to the ground. I forsee the air dam
getting ripped off pretty early on, its only maybe 6" off the ground.
