I don't remember, but it still had your stations set in memory. Didn't you
have a problem with the antenna or the radio draining the battery? Or was
that on your SDL?

Indeed.

And from others' comments, I suspect it's not a case like the W123

My latest ordering places for parts has been importecautoparts.com for
OEM and for dealer parts I have put in several orders from Huskers at
mbpartsdirect.com. I ordered that little expansion valve bracket that
their shipping calculator came up with $17 Vic over there lowered it to
$10. Of course after I put that order in I discovered other parts I
needed so I am putting in another order. BTW some of you were talking
about ordering from rmeuropean or something or other website. I think
either Poos or somebody had some parts they ordered from them and
somebody else ordered a frontend rebuild kit/parts from them. At the
time I priced out the prices on both and ended up way way cheaper at
importec. In fact the last several orders I have made I put the same
order in autohausaz.com and importec was about $40-$50 cheaper for the
exact same parts. I have had them arrive in a couple of days with the
free shipping, even had parts arrive on a Saturday before.

Yup, I ventured into it tonight to see what tool it'd need, standard splined
Shamino. I discovered that I can easily adjust the play out but I accidentally
loosened it again while installing the wheel. The derailleur is attached with
the wheel nut and has a little spacer so it can't rotate, makes centering the
wheel a bit of a pain. Quit for the night before I did something dumb.
I'll order the tool so I can grease the bearing, who knows when that was last
done ...

Re: [MBZ] OT: Bicycle repair

2016-07-12 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes

It's probably got caged bearings in it, in which case you can't take out the right side balls and clean them without the freewheel remover, but you can still take off the left side bearing cone and locknut and slide the axle out to the right and pack some grease in there. I suspect the bearing cones will be heavily pitted. Up to you whether to buy new cones and balls or just grease it all up and put it back together. If it's got loose balls, you can do pretty much anything you want with the bearings without removing the freewheel, but it's a PITA to work on the right side because it's buried behind the freewheel. Removing a freewheel that hasn't been disturbed in 30 years is a different sort of fun. I'd suggest using the axle nut to hold the freewheel tool in full engagement, clamp the tool in a vise, and turn the wheel with both hands. As soon as it starts turning, you've got to stop and loosen the axle nut.On July 12, 2016 at 9:33 PM Mountain Man via Mercedes wrote:Ya gotta remove the gear cluster to do rear hub = special tool.mao

Wow is right. Why would anyone spend that kind of money on rims which
require tires so thin they and the rim will be damaged going over common
bumps in the road?

Re: [MBZ] Wilton needs this for his new ride

2016-07-12 Thread Joel Cairo via Mercedes
I had this conversation with my son a coupla weeks ago as we were
passing a house with a "Box" with a blue metalflake paint job on blocks
out behind it, I had seen it there for quite some time with the big
chrome rims, etc. then recently on blocks. I supposed that the rim
store had come and repoed them when the guy couldn't keep up with
payments (you can get them on credit, just make a monthly payment, rent
to "own"). So I asked him why he thought this particular trend was
popular in a certain demographic, if it was a personal satisfaction
thing, to show off to his buddies, or to appear to be more attractive to
the ladies.

He believed quite sincerely that it was to be more attractive to the
ladies. A car with big rims was the key, not a job, education, nice
house, etc. I don't know but it sorta made sense, and he is probably
more in tune with it than I am.

Contact local telco to inquire about DSL.

Uverse (from BellSouth / ATT) seems to be a marketing scheme to tie you
into a special modem / router that provides DSL service bundled with
voice-over-IP, which now becomes a single point failure.  Special modem
dies or locks up, no more house phone or internet.  If you are comfortable
that your cell phones will work, including after the EMP attack or the
earth quake or tornado or the zombie apocalypse, then go for it.

Re: [MBZ] OT internet

2016-07-12 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
We had Verizon DSL until last week when I cut off my home phone which
accidentally screwed the pooch for that. When I tried to turn it back on I was
informed that Verizon is pulling DSL out of my town.Fortunately Comcast will
service my house, I bought a cable modem from Amazon which arrived yesterday
but my Comcast "install packet" doesn't arrive until tomorrow. The cable modem
phones home but is thus far denied from playing nice with Comcast. Presumably
I'll have to phone in and give them the MAC address...
Fortunately I had to be in the office this week anyway. When I'm home I'm
getting a lot of reading done.

I'm not sure how FIOS (Verizon's fiber-based service) is provisioned to
the house, if you actually have a fiber drop at your interface or what,
but "fiber running down the street" might be the trunk line that goes
into the switch in your area, from there it goes out copper to your
house, and depending on how far you are from the switch it might not be
possible to get DSL (or Uverse VOIP/intertubes).  I have a switch just a
coupla hundred yards from the (copper) terminal on the road at the end
of the driveway, then maybe 1000ft of copper to the house from that.
There is a fiber line running along the road too but it does not go to
houses.

I got Uverse a coupla years ago for phone and intertubes, had one modem
fail which they fixed and then tried to charge me for.  I got the
"introductory" rate which they tried to jack up by 50% last year, I
threatened to quit so they reinstituted the rate again.  It's all a
racket no matter which you get.

When the zombie apocalypse or the Sword of Allah falls I think your
friends might be Mr. Browning, Ruger, Smitth, Wesson, etc. rather than
AT  And CB raddiddios (stored in a metal can) good buddy.

Thoughts? Is M1 a decent grease for the job?

Re: [MBZ] ?

2016-07-12 Thread Joel Cairo via Mercedes

Perhaps you can help with a translation:

"Be sure to short pressure S/W. otherwise Low pressure S/W detect low
pressure skete and stops the compressor."

My split system quit cooling last night, the head units are blinking
which I think (if my Korenglish is working) means the refrigerant is
low. My HVAC guy is slammed but says he'll come tomorrow which will be OK.

I am thinking I need to get the "license" and watch what he does then
just buy a gauge set and a tank of gas and do my own topping off every
year. Actually I have watched and it is pretty much just getting enough
in for the pressures to come up properly.

These mini-splits are great but there are on my system 16 connections (2
at each head unit and 8 on the outside unit) so the probability of even
a very tiny leak is fairly high, and those compression connections are
somewhat problematic even when being very careful on the connections.
This charge has lasted since Nov '14 so that is not bad, considering.

[MBZ] OT: My friend's 1989 560 SE C [shameless commerce]

2016-07-12 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
*The following is a description of my friend's 1989 560 SEC coupe. The car
is located in Chevy Chase, MD and has been always garaged and well cared
for. I can provide photos - if you're interested please email me off list.*

Up for sale is a beautiful example of one of the nicest coupes
Mercedes-Benz has ever produced.

It is a two-owner 1989 560 SEC with original 108,000 low, pampered miles
(under 5 K. miles/year).

This 560 SEC spent its entire life in the Washington, DC area. It has been
well serviced and maintained all its life, with plenty of records and
documentation. Everything works like it should with no known issues.
Steering box replaced and no rattling shifter bushings.

The motor runs smooth and powerful, and the transmission shifts very
smoothly. The cosmetic condition is also superb.

All chrome parts look very nice without any dull spots. The interior is in
above average condition with just normal signs of wear and tear. It is a
non-smoker car with no unusual odors at all.

If you are in the market for a great 560 SEC with a very reasonable price,
this is the one!

Feel free to call nnn-nnn- with any questions you might have.
*Price: *$9,900 obo.

*Extra Notes *

The late 1980s were a good time for Mercedes, the strength of the dollar
pushing orders and production to record-breaking levels. The byproduct of
that success was a zealous and well-funded R department that helped
Mercedes carry on their reputation for perpetual technological advancement
and the highest possible build-quality. That quality is immediately
apparent from behind the wheel of this car. Smooth, powerful and abundantly
stable and balanced, it's hard to imagine a more comfortable,
driver-friendly car despite its 27 years. Cutting edge in 1989, the W126
model SEC fulfilled and still fulfills all of the core requirements of a
flagship luxury coupe, making the advancements of the subsequent quarter
decade seem like unnecessary window-dressing. Buyers had to pay for the
privilege of owning these cars, with the original sticker price being
nearly $83k. Adjusting for inflation, that's more that $160k in today's
money.

The car's design is entirely representative of its “top-of-the-line”
exclusivity. Big, bold and 1980's angular, the car embodies a practical
strength while still remaining elegant and well proportioned. This is only
enhanced by the timelessly clean Black-on-Black, which is in very good
condition, commensurate with the car's low, well-looked-after mileage.
Marred only by minor imperfections to the paint (none of which are
significant enough to detract from the car's overall appeal or even appear
in the pictures), the car's tank-like body is in excellent condition, and
retaining factory consistent gaps and panel fits.

The car's interior is equally as clean, the tasteful black leather seats
exhibiting only the slightest amount of wear and the interior carpets and
panels all flawless. The dash is free of cracks or warping and the control
console houses fully functioning switchgear and gauges. The power sunroof,
power seats, heated seats, power windows, air conditioning, temperature
controls and Alpine 12 CD Changer and Cassette Player all function
properly. All of the glass, rubber and chrome is in good shape. The new
alloy wheels are beautiful, and they're wrapped in top Michelin tires with
plenty of remaining tread.

The car is also mechanically sound, the engine starting without hesitation,
idling smoothly and pulling strongly through each of the transmission's
gears. Road manners are top notch, as are handling and braking, and the car
is comfortable whether tooling through town running errands or bombing down
the highway. Built for the Autobahn, the tried and true M117 5.6L V8 engine
leaps into action when asked, providing trademark Mercedes torque and
pulling the car quickly from 50mph to 100mph. And because of its stability
and smooth suspension, it's not an uncommon experience to look down at the
speedometer and realize that you're traveling significantly faster than you
thought. Having spent its life garaged and never exposed to the elements,
the car's undercarriage is completely rust-free and solid. Upholstered in
unmolested carpeting, the expansive trunk houses an unused full size spare
tire and the car's original tools, and the car comes with its original
owner's manual, books and three original keys.

This is a great opportunity to acquire a gorgeous, low mileage and
mechanically excellent example of one of Mercedes' most impressive models.
With a vast majority of the 560SECs produced having been driven into the
ground, finding clean, low mileage examples is uncommon today and ever more
so. It's our opinion that because of their timeless designs, relative
technological simplicity and uncompromised build quality, 560SECs are one
of the final models produced by Mercedes that will ever achieve classic or
collector car status, continuing to appreciate in the years to come. With
very few low mileage,

With as low as the loading on the axle is, just about any grease would
suffice. M1 is better than just any grease.

If you wanted to go whole hog, you could use Amsoil GPTR2 Synthetic
Polymeric Truck, Chassis and Equipment Grease,
http://www.amsoil.com/shop/by-product/grease/synthetic-polymeric-truck-chassis-and-equipment-grease-nlgi-2/?code=GPTR2CR-EA
 .

I did an extensive review of greases when I selected the grease to use on
our utility trailer's wheel bearings. GPTR2 came out on top.

Attached is the spreadsheet I developed showing the results of my
research.

"If they have fiber running down the street why do we not have DSL or
uverse or something?"

[MBZ] OT: Bicycle repair

2016-07-12 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I remember some discussion of bicycles on here recently.
Yesterday after a ride Angie complained that her bike "felt funny" on
inspection I found the rear hub has about 1/8" of play... This is a "Free
Spirit" 10spd probably from the early '80s or late '70s. Looks like it was
probably sold by Sears, looks just like:
http://www.sweatershoppe.com/bicycles/258-5820-8x6.jpg
So I've done some Googling and the hub rebuild looks pretty easy though I've
got to get in there and see what kind of tool I'll need to get it apart. I'm
thinking to pull it apart, grease with some Mobil 1 axle grease and reassemble.
Looks like some hubs have adjustable free-play, hoping thats the case here...

Re: [MBZ] OT internet

2016-07-12 Thread Joel Cairo via Mercedes

Browning, Ruger, Smitth, Wesson, etc. rather than

My split system quit cooling last night, the head units are

refrigerant is low. My HVAC guy is slammed but says he'll come
tomorrow which will be OK.

I am thinking I need to get the "license" and watch what he does
then just buy a gauge set and a tank of gas and do my own topping
off every year. Actually I have watched and it is pretty much
just getting enough in for the pressures to come up properly.

These mini-splits are great but there are on my system 16
connections (2 at each head unit and 8 on the outside unit) so the
probability of even a very tiny leak is fairly high, and those
compression connections are somewhat problematic even when being
very careful on the connections. This charge has lasted since Nov
'14 so that is not bad, considering.

Re: [MBZ] OT internet

2016-07-12 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
The fiber is infrastructure fiber and probably not set up for consumer stuff.

Understand that back in the early 1980s, Sprint had the national contract with
the DoD for fiber. They set up and installed the CONUS infrastructure and
actual fiber and maintained it to DoD standards. Part of the payoff of being
the first ones to do this and undertake the massive expense was getting the
ability to lease out some of the bandwidth and resell or use it themselves.

The Ma Bells came in after Sprint and did a lot of the “last mile” connections,
which is probably what you’re seeing.

Where we are east of Moriarty, NM, there is no DSL. We have a
point-to-multipoint wireless link provided by an ISP in Moriarty which
supplies 5 - 6 megabits/s for $54/mo.

Re: [MBZ] OT internet

2016-07-12 Thread clay via Mercedes
FIOS is fiber to the home. No copper until it goes from the box in the home to
Coax or RJ11/RJ45 for TV/phone/networking. Since there is no power in the
line, the box has a back up battery to allow the phone to function and send
signal down the line to telco. SWMBA negotiated the leases on the Pacific
coast for Verizon.

Fiber providers have to toss a box in a secured area of the home then hook to a
router inside to provide services. Box on the pole is where the splice is
made and a line is pulled to the home.

If he’s truly interested in selling in the best venue, he should consider
listing it on BAT with a reserve.

www.bringatrailer.com

The BAT people do a pretty good job with listings, and while the comments can
get a little rough at times, they’re usually quite helpful. It’s an audience
that’s discerning but has the money to buy such nice toys.

Just a suggestion.

A BAT buyer would be a good home. The demographics of hte place are much the
same as this list, only far more car diverse.

If I was going to sell a car I thought worthy I would definitely use BAT. You
couldn’t get a better targeted audience, and it’s pretty much foolproof. They
will also assist with the copy and marketing stuff, too.

There are huge amounts of dark fiber all over the country too (and the

The fiber is infrastructure fiber and probably not set up for consumer stuff.

Understand that back in the early 1980s, Sprint had the national contract with
the DoD for fiber. They set up and installed the CONUS infrastructure and
actual fiber and maintained it to DoD standards. Part of the payoff of being
the first ones to do this and undertake the massive expense was getting the
ability to lease out some of the bandwidth and resell or use it themselves.

The Ma Bells came in after Sprint and did a lot of the “last mile” connections,
which is probably what you’re seeing.
