I had thought the comments were from the pictures (I see five pictures on
benzworld of the exterior and interior from driver's side).

I read a little more carefully and noticed the comment:

- oil breather hose re-routed with catch can, August 2015

so I guess that is where you noticed the can.

I doubt any yard will sell a catalytic converter. I tried to buy one from our
local LKQ, no joy. Very frustrating. $1600 or more from MB for a new part.

I suspect that the non-turbo front pipes with cat from a 210 car can be adapted
to fit without too much work.

Yes, from the description. You can get one hell of a nice one for $3k

Down a ways in that same newsletter:

*4th Gear: Who Wants A Cheap Diesel Volkswagen? *

Volkswagen just got the approval to sell their remaining (and now fixed)
inventory of 2015 2.0-liter TDI cars and I’d imagine they’re beyond tired
of looking at them right now. *The
Detroit News*

writes:

The beleaguered German automaker is giving drivers a 24-month lease option
with an $8,500 bonus, or 0 percent, 72-month financing with a $5,000 bonus,
on its Generation 3 2.0L TDI vehicles. Eligible models include TDI version
of the 2015 Jetta, Golf, Beetle, Passat and Audi A3, each modified to meet
U.S. emission standards after the automaker was caught cheating regulations

The company has 11,000 of those cars up for sale, but they’re moving
fast—3,100 of those were sold last month. That’s still down from the 7,400
diesel cars Volkswagen sold in the last month before Dieselgate broke,
though, which accounted for almost 23 percent of its sales in August 2015.

[MBZ] OT: Another repair

2017-05-08 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
The trunk lock on my '98 Jetta has never worked well. For awhile I had some
teflon lock goop that would get it working again. More recently I used Houdini
lube on it which worked well for awhile. In the last 4 months it hasn't worked
at all. I rarely use the trunk but since the car otherwise has only one lock
(driver's door) I wanted another that worked. The lock is held in with 2 screws,
then held together with one E clip so disassembly is really easy. I didn't pay
much attention to the orientation of the bits which became a problem later on
but not that big of a deal really.
What I found inside is a lock very much like a w123:
http://i843.photobucket.com/albums/zz353/curtludwig/1998%20Jetta/IMG_20170506_155448848_zpsrm3sn25s.jpg
The little lock wafers are pretty much exactly like a w123:
http://i843.photobucket.com/albums/zz353/curtludwig/1998%20Jetta/IMG_20170506_155448848_zpsrm3sn25s.jpg
The lock was clogged with what looks like earwax, it laughed at brake cleaner
although carb cleaner melted it pretty good. I ended up using a combination of
carb cleaner, Houdini lock lube and a brass punch to get the wafers out. Then
used some 400 grit sandpaper to polish the sides of the wafers. Took about an
hour of scraping with a dental tool to get the shmoo out of the lock cylinder.
I did manage to lose a couple of the springs so I've only got 5 wafers instead
of 7. I figure my car isn't much of a target for thieves...
Theres an o-ring around the body of the lock that had failed. Since the little
door on the end of the lock was intact I think water was getting past the
o-ring and gumming up the teflon stuff I'd put it. I put a new o-ring on and
hosed it down with Houdini lube, I'll keep an eye on it for the next couple
weeks and report the results.
Reassembly was a pain since I hadn't paid enough attention to the orientation,
theres the cylinder orientation (goes in 2 ways) and then a block that clips on
to that which can go two ways. I put it together wrong 3 times before getting
it right...

El Ron got a reputation for being a recluse. Eventually Davide's Miscarriage,
the #2 man in the scam, was the gatekeeper who could keep everybody, including
doctors and family, away from El Ron and claim it was El Ron's idea. Right
before El Ron died, he went into seclusion and willed all his copyrights to the
church, which would be run by The Miscarriage upon his death.

Cynics think that Miscarriage kidnapped him and withheld freedom and medical
attention for ransom, the ransom being all of his copyrighted novels and
Scientology texts. Then, after El Ron paid up, he was worth far more dead than
alive, so it was important for him to become as dead as Lisa McPherson. The
same cynics think it's simple karma that El Ron was robbed upon his deathbed of
all his ill-gotten gains that he'd intended to leave to his family.

Mitch.

Re: [MBZ] The Tech That Keeps You From Totaling Your Car Might Actually Total It Easier In A Crash

2017-05-08 Thread OK Don via Mercedes

[MBZ] OT Fwd: Re: little tractor SCAM

So i saw this posting on CL yesterday for this little yard tractor,
looked too good to be true, but thought it might be fun to send a query
anyway. Clearly a scam but this is kinda interesting. I might keep
playing along, maybe put Kleb's address in the reply...

There was one that was similar but some woman's name, I should do the
same with that one and see if the same scam comes back.

That link goes to some pictures but this stuff if you go up a level or
2. Is that Polish or something?

As I've previously told you my medical team will deploy back to
Afghanistan. Right now I'm in a military base of Nevada, U.S. Army. I am
only allowed to check my email. We have to stick to email for now. Hope
you can understand. The delivery process will be managed by eBay. I
think they can have it there at your home address in 2-3 days. It will
come with all the documentation's required for registration. I am a
member of the eBay motors and using this service you will get a 5 days
testing period after delivery. During that 5 days testing period I will
not be getting any money. I need to know if you are interested so I can
ask eBay motors to send you the details on this deal. If interested just
email with your legal name (for the bill of sale) address where you want
the vehicle delivered and phone # where you can be reached, so we can
get the ball rolling.

Thank you.

2017-05-08 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
That's what the guy selling it said, it just quit working one day.
Belonged to his step father or something, this kid was going to fix it
but it has been sitting for 4-5 years, I got it for $200, it is actually
a pretty nice car, needs a bit of cleaning. I gotta put the new fuel
filter on it, see if the pump is pumping, and get it running to see what
exactly is the issue. I'm hoping it is something not too bad, seems
like a tranny doesn't just up and quit one day with no progressive failure.

Re: [MBZ] 89 Mercedes Benz 300 SEL... (SELLING AS IS) $600

2017-05-08 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes

It's particular to the 300SEL

Would anyone know the difference between the 722.319 & 722.351
transmissions?

One WEB site I found indicates the 319 is for 1986-1989 300-SELs. This
same site shows the 722.351 being used by 1990-1991 300SELs.

germanstar.com shows the 722.319 being used by 1986-1991 300SELs.

Arthur Dalton posted some info on 722.3xx and 722.4xx transmissions in
the following thread. The 319 was not mentioned.

722.3/4 trans start gear [ 1st/2nd ?]

I know how to locate my transmission # and knowing which 722.3xx I have
isn't the issue. I'm curious about the difference between the 319 & 351.

Exclamation

The 722.319 doesn't have up-shift "delay" solenoid & plumming that the
722.351 has!

$350 so I need to get this thing running and check out the tranny, or at
least get it up on blocks to take a look at the shifter links. Maybe

Yeah that was some pretty funny stuff. Didn't Elron's wife or
girlfriend kill him out in the desert and they never found his body?

I have this friend (or used to, haven't seen him in ages) who knew both
of those characters somewhat peripherally based on some interesting
background. He was good friends with Jerry Pournelle and I guess all
these guys used to hang around together at various times. They were all
pretty weird but quite smart too. I met one of them once, a somewhat
marginal SF writer, I forget which one, at one of his weddings. I
remember talking to my friend about this scientologist thing way back
when, he thought it was the funniest damn thing he ever saw -- some hack
by Elron got turned into something for reals and those idiots started
making big money off it. Wonders never cease.

I had this other friend, another MIT guy, who had a very serious plan to
create a "religion" and start it up. He had most of the details worked
out to be internally consistent, but of course the whole thing was
complete BS nonsense which was part of the fun for him. I think at the
time his main interests in doing it were to 1) just do it, 2) see if he
could get people to actually get involved with it, and 3) women. It of
course had him as the Grand Poobah or something, to whom all the women
would have to submit, and the guys would do the work and bring in
money. No xenus or anything like that, it was just some feel-good kind
of thing (mostly for him) and a way to fund whatever other interests he
might have (along with the women aspect). As far as I know he never
moved forward with it but he was more than half-serious about it. He
was quite successful in the women aspect even without the religion due
to his rather winning personality, so that motivation factor kinda faded
away.

Not to mention the income becomes tax free.

The flying spaghetti monster thing is intriguing too. Obviously a joke,

bring in money. No xenus or anything like that, it was just some
feel-good kind of thing (mostly for him) and a way to fund whatever
other interests he might have (along with the women aspect). As far
as I know he never moved forward with it but he was more than
half-serious about it. He was quite successful in the women aspect
even without the religion due to his rather winning personality, so
that motivation factor kinda faded away.

What was the motive of the science fiction writer who created this "religion"

I guess in Grand Rapids, he doesn't need no stinking AC, and a little rust

Well, I see a couple things, but the price is great and they are really
nice cars when sorted out.

The muffler / catalyst delete troubles me. Mine sounded awful with no cat,
and not much better with an aftermarket cat. The exhaust system is really
tuned for the best sound.

No discussion of the AC evaporator, leaking or not leaking or replaced.

What the heck is "valve cleaning"?

It’s got exhaust flex that needs to be addressed. Minor problem. Vacuum
issues for shifting as well, but again, simple stuff.

Do these have the blue flying saucer thing for vacuum control?

Re: [MBZ] Dang!

I looked up scientology on the web. It appears to be based in part on Freuds
theory of the Id and Ego. It seems to get into trouble when dealing with people
who see visions, hear voices, can't function in normal society
(schizophrenics). Several schizophrenics under the "care" of scientology have
committed murder.

Wikipedia has a pretty thorough article on Hubbard and Scientology. This about
Hubbards early years is interesting:

"L. Ron Hubbard (1911–1986) was the only child of Harry Ross Hubbard, a United
States Navy officer, and his wife Ledora. Hubbard spent three semesters at
George Washington University but was placed on probation in September 1931. He
failed to return for the fall 1932 semester.[27]

In July 1941, Hubbard was commissioned as a Lieutenant (junior grade) in the
U.S. Naval Reserve. On May 18, 1943, his subchaser left Portland. That night,
Hubbard ordered his crew to fire 35 depth charges and a number of gun rounds at
what he believed were Japanese submarines.[28] His ship sustained minor damage
and three crew were injured. Having run out of depth charges and with the
presence of a submarine still unconfirmed by other ships, Hubbard's ship was
ordered back to port. The navy report concludes that "there was no submarine in
the area." A decade later, Hubbard claimed he had sunk a Japanese submarine in
his Scientology lectures.

On June 28, 1941, Hubbard ordered his crew to fire on the Coronado Islands.
Hubbard apparently did not realize that the islands belonged to US-allied
Mexico, nor that he had taken his vessel into Mexican territorial waters.[30]
He was reprimanded and removed from command on July 7.[30] After reassignment
to a naval facility in Monterey, California, Hubbard became depressed and fell
ill. Reporting stomach pains in April 1945, he spent the remainder of the war
as a patient in Oak Knoll Naval Hospital in Oakland, California...snip

Now that I am looking at it closer I have to say for the money you could have
found a much better example. There are 2 big red flags for me. First of all the
cat being deleted. Like max says the exhaust will not sound right at all.
That's going to be a major annoyance. The big big big huge huge huge red flag
is the bit about the oil breather hose re routed with catch can? Wtf? Every 606
I have owned has had almost zero blow by. The only reason for this "upgrade" is
if it's blowing a crazy amount of oil out. Do we have any additional photos? I
am very worried for Dan. This does not seem like a good deal at all, especially
since it's such a run of the mill car.

My vote is the 94 e420 with 77k. Great car.

Not in my neighborhood.

I appreciate your concern.

While there may be some blow by, the engine is fine. Compression checked out
across all cylinders.

Again, I didn’t buy this to be a Martha car. It’s going to be run into the
ground. Not everything I buy needs to be perfect, and I know what this car’s
issues are going in, so nothing is a surprise. This will replace the
Tommymobile, which has served it’s purpose well.

Any TDI. $7k would buy a really nice example. I prefer 2006 and earlier for the
simplicity of pre-DPF. The easiest to work on are the pre-pump deuce engines
which I think came with model year 2003. The '97-2002 VE engines have
conventional injection pumps and are pretty easy to work on although tight
quarters.

Plan on spending $250 for the VCDS cable to connect your laptop for easy
troubleshooting.

RE: crack money for old Diesels

I wondered if those of the (J) party persuasion in the DC area were
ready to start their own "prepper" movement after being so thoroughly
defeated. If so, I was going to suggest we work together to offer up
to them refurb mechanical FI Dissels that can survive the apocalyptic
world. It would be nice to have a steady supply of lobbyists and gummit
payroll fools, and the various and sundry leeches attached to them,
flush with our cash, as customers. Our mole in the system says the
deep state is alive and well and nobody is headed for the hills yet.

So, no boom in sight yet.

I would say a later model W124 of some sort. While they have their issues,
they’re fairly inexpensive to operated and pretty bulletproof.

I suspect if I'd been applying Houdini to the lock every month the earwax would
have stayed soft enough to work but of course it's better to fix it right...

On Mon, May 8, 2017 at 1:23 PM, Curt Raymond via Mercedes
 wrote:

The trunk lock on my '98 Jetta has never worked well. For awhile I had some
teflon lock goop that would get it working again. More recently I used Houdini
lube on it which worked well for awhile. In the last 4 months it hasn't worked
at all. I rarely use the trunk but since the car otherwise has only one lock
(driver's door) I wanted another that worked. The lock is held in with 2 screws,
then held together with one E clip so disassembly is really easy. I didn't pay
much attention to the orientation of the bits which became a problem later on
but not that big of a deal really.
What I found inside is a lock very much like a w123: http://i843.photobucket.
com/albums/zz353/curtludwig/ 1998%20Jetta/IMG_20170506_

The little lock wafers are pretty much exactly like a w123:

1998%20Jetta/IMG_20170506_ 155448848_zpsrm3sn25s.jpg
I put it together wrong 3 times before getting
it right...

Settle down. It’s a $2k car and it’s not perfect. I’m well aware of the cat
issue and the exhaust. Again, not something I’m concerned about.

This is going to be a beater within a year, believe me. I don’t care what it
sounds like or how much blowby it has. I did not buy it to make it a Martha
car. I bought it for the oldest son to run into the ground.

When it shows up it will get the full on Martha treatment, the front bumper
strip will get addressed, the exhaust will get sealed if it’s leaking at the
flex, the vacuum issues will be taken care of so it shifts smoothly, and all
fluids and filters will get replaced.

That will be the high point of its existence, I suspect.
