[MBZ] Diesel model airplane fuel

2018-06-07 Thread Michael Esh via Mercedes
I am going to mix some model airplane diesel fuel. The mix is approximately 50%
kerosene, 20% castor/syn oil and 30% ether. I have been told I can’t order
liquid ether.
I am going to try and use starting fluid by gassing off the propellant by
turning the can upside down then retrieving the ether by puncturing can and
draining it out into a measuring container. Does anyone know a better way to
get this product?
Any thoughts?

Thanks

I'm not exactly sure what you are asking. Are you seeking an out of the way

Mississippi. But, the state certainly offers plenty of places where you won't
see much other than farms.

Mississippi has a population around 3 Million. It is a fairly large state in
terms of geographical size. The urban (or semi urban) areas are located on the
coast, around Jackson, and to a lesser extent: Hattiesburg and the college
towns of Oxford and Starkville. Oxford is a Beautiful town. It is home to
"Ole Miss." Because it is a college town, it is probably one of the more
liberal areas in the whole state. Of course, "liberal" in Mississippi is much
different than Liberal in Illinois or Massachusetts.

The least populated county in the state is Issaquena County. It is far west
and central. It is notable because it had the highest concentration of slaves
(before the Civil War) of any County in the Country. 40+% of the county is in
poverty and the county has the highest unemployment in the state.

Hinds and Jackson Counties are the most populous.

Re: [MBZ] OT - Mississippi

2018-06-07 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
Interestingly enough, I found the most racist/ethnicist place I have
ever lived to be liberal Massachusetts.  The "race" aspect was sorta
secondary to the ethnic aspect, kinda as in you don't look like me, you
aren't like me, your family did not come from the same place as mine,
you're a different religion, etc.  I found that almost everyone
disliked<->hated (somewhere on that spectrum) everyone else, at least
those who were more than one generation in the area.  Being very
stereotypical here, but I found that whites disliked<->hated blacks, and
anyone else of a darker shade in general, (white) Irish and Italians
hated one another, Catholics, Jews, Protestants, Muslims, whatever. I
had a Haitian neighbor who was really black, who viscerally hated the
"American" blacks who lived up the street from us and would go off on
them sounding like an old klucker, it was pretty bad but was also
somewhat curious and mystifying but I realized it came down to cultural
values not color so much.

It seemed to come down whoever had arrived more recently than the other
group, and the ones later on were like monkeys in a tree, with the ones
above "trickling" down on the ones below, so that created this sorta
cultural/ethnic/racial animosity.   Asians, specifically Vietnamese and
Cambodians, were the latest groups to arrive, so everyone else looked
down on them.  It was really strange.  As an outsider I was never fully
"integrated" but did eventually make some more-or-less "local" friends
but it took a coupla decades.

Living here at ground zero for slavery, I find that of course there is
still fairly strong racism ( the area is not particularly
racially/ethnically diverse, though hispanics are becoming a larger part
of the community) but at least where I live folks mostly get along while
both sides maintain some self-segregation due to historical issues
(slavery, Jim Crow, KKK, etc.) that are still very present in family
experiences as this stuff was quite present up until fairly recently.
The disliked<->hated aspect is not nearly as up front as it was in
"liberal" Massachusetts which I find kinda strange.

All that said, it seems to be human nature that we divide ourselves into
cohorts based on race, ethnicity, culture, beliefs, interests, or
whatever, and that becomes a basis for a "community" of thought or
attitude, in some cases established generations ago, and it gets
reinforced and accepted as "normal."  I just read a book called
Hillbilly Elegy that lays out very clearly how the Eastern Kentucky
culture continued through a diaspora in the 50s (or earlier) to what is
now the Rust Belt, and is still quite apparent today.  So there are
these subsets of cultural behaviors even among the white population that
I find quite off-putting and they don't really involve any racial aspects.

Yes they were. I hope things have improved. It has been 19 years since I lived
there so I guess that provides a blip in the long history of the area.

I recall a drive through Mississippi years ago seeing a beat up old pickup
driven by what could only be described as a PhD nuclear physicist, or maybe a
theoretical cosmologist, sporting a window sticker saying “if I had known, I’d
have picked my own damn cotton “. I’m guessing he was not yet entirely
reconstructed.

The story that set my interest to MS years ago featured the MS river

a utility company carved the path. Culture seemed to be mentioned in
the story so it seemed attractive. i.e. real people, no mention of a
disliked<->hated aspect, but this was from liberal main stream media
NPR that shall not mention disliked<->hated aspects. --R thanks for
your musings which are probably real anywhere. For me, the city/burbs
is more expensive than gov't retirement takings are paying out and no
savings so my scramble needs to happen. It seems to be said that
rent/food expenses should not exceed 60% of resources? Yeah, that
never happened so savings was not but there were years that easy
seemed to happen for a few years so... I'm thankful. We made it with
tons of memory to make life. Life still continues so a different
scene needs to happen so maybe the 60% plateau can be approached.

Snook - Issaquena County sounds interesting unless the
disliked<->hated aspect becomes like Deliverance=ugghh. To get to 60%
of resources, perhaps the combination of rural and poverty can be
approached by city slicker with low resources? The low resource gig
did okay as you know via many years of musings from me at okiebenz.

I would say that the issues I saw in MS were racism, truly the black vs. white
thing. The Boston situation sounds far more like a cultural thing than racism.
I’ve seen the cultural thing play out in places like South Florida, where the
Cubans have been displaced by the Haitians, the Haitians by the Guatemalans,
etc., etc., as the waves of immigrants come into the country and gentrify the
area. The cultures seem to have little tolerance for each other, and the ones
who are the most “landed” seem to feel a sense of ownership, resenting the
presence of the newcomers. How quickly they forget!

When I was young and living in WI, I was told two stories that I'll never
forget.

One of my grade school teachers, a WI native, who had been a medic /
ambulance driver in the Korean war, was touring around the country at one
point (I think in late 50's or early 60's) in an old decrepit Ford coupe.
Not a big guy but very muscular, when he wasn't teaching he was farming and
logging. He stopped in some small town in the south, either asking for
directions or had some car trouble or something. Tried to talk to some guy
on the street for help, the response was something along the lines of "Boy,
you aren't from around here, are you? You best just keep on moving, we
don't need your type around here!". Some type of threat followed, so he
"kept on moving".

Different guy also from WI, was alone in some big southern town, visiting
or looking for work or something, found himself in the wrong neighborhood
and was getting the stink-eye from the locals. He tried to be a tough guy
and stand his ground, pretty soon a group of black men was chasing him down
the street and he was running for his life. Just when he thought he'd
outrun the bad guys, he came upon a group of white guys, so he runs up to
them to ask for help and they promptly started beating him up. He's saying
"wait wait, I'm one of you!" to which one replied "No, you're not from
around here, you're NOT one of us".

Is there any reasonable excuse for ether to cost $200 a gallon?

Hey Mike, I've got a couple of Tower .40 engines if you'd rather experiment
with E85 and a little nitro.

Mitch, who knew about the bean oil but had no idea model aviation diesel had
ether in it.

It may be diethyl ether USP which is pure enough for use as an anesthetic in
surgery. Hence the high price.

Dimethyl ether is probably what MMM needs for his planes and shouldn't be so
expensive:

"Dimethyl ether: An aerosol spray propellant. A potential renewable alternative
fuel for diesel engines with a cetane rating as high as 56–57."

Penray sells 40% starting fluid.
$25/dozen cans sounds reasonable, if putting more heptane than ether in the mix
is OK.

The propellant is CO2, so it goes away by itself.

If you are "one of them" it does make a difference. My stepmother knew
everyone on the Coast and all the important ones in Memphis and Oxford. So, as
long I can make a connection with somebody who knew my Stepmother, I was
golden. They do take care of their own and they do look sideways at folks who

Pardon if I sound stupid, but is E-85 high octane? I thought it was just
regular unleaded without ethanol.

And for what E-85 costs around here, it’s actually cheaper or the same to just
put premium in it. I just bought a couple gallons this week for the lawn
equipment and I believe it was the same as what I pay for premium.

[MBZ] When it rains....

2018-06-07 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
..it pours.

Tuesday morning I get a call from spousal unit.

“My car won’t start and the battery is dead!”

Hmm. Just put a brand new battery in the car a month ago. Strange.

So she makes alternative transportation arrangement for work, and oldest son
goes out and puts charger on the battery for me so I can check things out when
I get home. Oldest son texts me shortly after:

“When I hook up the charger I can hear the AC blower running. It’s on even
with the key and the ACC turned off.” (He knows about REST - good boy!)

Hmm. Told him to disconnect the charger. Ordered a fan controller, assuming
that it’s shorted out and leaving the fan running all the time.

Fast forward to this morning. I’m on the highway on my way to work and all the
sudden the display on my W210 wagons starts going berserk.

“Check Engine Electronics - Check Engine” and an accompanying CEL. Poop.
Continue on, as car is running fine.

Stress and fret all day, assuming the worst.

Get home, jump into some work clothes and get out the SDS. Hook it up to the
W210 wagon and run diagnostics. P0400 error. Whew! So now I need to see if
I’ve got a bum hose or a clogged up EGR. Could be a MAP issue, but unlikely.

So since I’ve gotten all grungy, I figure I’ll poke around on the R129 and get
it ready to pull the blower housing for when the fan controller comes in. So I
disconnect the blower at the connector behind the brake booster, as I’m going
to pull the yellow (control) wire out of the harness and hook everything else
up to see if the fan still runs to confirm the controller is stuck on. I
notice that there’s a bunch of corrosion around the connector, so I pull
everything apart and give it a good dose of DeOxIt.

I pull the filter from the blower housing so I can see the fan turn, and I plug
the blower harness back in with everything in place. No blower.

So it would appear that the blower controller was triggering due to the
corrosion on and around the connector. Dang it. Oh well, at least it’s working
so I can get the spouse back in that car.

Then I look down in the blower housing, and guess what?

Yup, the strap that holds the motor in place is broken, as they all do.

So I’m pulling everything apart tonight to fix that and I’ll be done with it
and can tear into the W210 and see what causing the P0400.

I wonder why all this stuff happens at the same time….

Yeah, I understand that - I am saying that to my knowledge it’s the same octane

Lots of stuff on the menu, including grits (one syllable), but I had one egg
scrambled, country ham (huge piece shared w/Craig) & toast; Craig had an egg

Re: [MBZ] E-85 octane booster?

2018-06-07 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes
Funny how Wiki gives two examples of mis-citation of E-85's octane rating
without telling us what it really is. Unfortunately, I had the phony 104 rating
stuck in my head and never bothered to look it up until just now. Apparently
that came from Curley's beloved Iowa corn people.

The best E-85 around apparently is only 99 octane, and anything over 100 is
research octane, not pump octane.
https://www.sunocoracefuels.com/fuel/e85-r

Pump E-85 can be as low as 70% ethanol, which would be well under 99 octane. I
wish Michigan was one of the states that required labeling of the true ethanol
percentage. Conversely, we have a prevention of information law that prohibits
E0 pumps from being labeled as such, the permissible pump language is 'up to
10% ethanol' for anything up to E10.

I believe 'regular' pump gas these days is about 85 octane, which becomes 87
octane when laced with 10% ethanol. In some mountain states, you can buy the 85
octane gas without the ethanol.

Got the blower motor out in 25 minutes. Taking a break then it’s back into the

Around here, I believe it all comes out of the pipeline at 85 octane and they
add octane boosters to it. They can't run alcohol through iron pipelines.

The 'recreational gas' is, as you say, usually sold at 89 octane. I don't know
of any in Eaton County, but I know of gas stations in the counties to the west
and east of me that sell it. When regular was about $2.30 last fall, I bought
six gallons of it at $3.49 for my generator. It would have been cheaper to buy
Shell V+Power premium, but I wanted something non-oxygenated to store long
term. 2/3 of it got run through my generator in April, and I got rid of the
rest in my mowers. I'm just glad I made it through the whole winter without
needing the generator, but getting hit with an ice storm in April wasn't much
fun. In the summer I just buy 87 octane E10, and the need to mow my lawn keeps
it from going stale.
Mitch.

I have scars on my hand from doing a W114.

I don’t recall, but I’m sure Curley can enlighten us when he gets his dial up
access fired up. I seem to recall that they’re inside the cabin under the
dash. Heater valves are not fun in W110/W111/W108s. They like to leak
(they’re under the dash) and are not easy to get to. A simple O ring fixes
them, but it’s an ordeal to get them out.

[MBZ] It is raining feces

2018-06-07 Thread clay monroe via Mercedes
Ok, not really. We are having a sort of dry weather situation. Have to use
the hose on the garden starts.

For cars, though, the poop is in full fan mode.

Youngest boy child is spending this summer with his Y chromosome donor. He
thinks we will be attending a private Liberals Arts school this fall. Not
sure he is ready for being a human adult so soon. Either way, he has been
using the SDL to get himself to small social events. He has failed to secure
employment the summer prior to entering the college of massive long term debt.
I am not paying for his tukass to to find his snow flake self.

So, he decided to lower the rear window in the SDL. Cop cars do not have
opening windows in back. The rear windows in Polei are supposed to be non
operational. He hit the switch for right hand rear, and the glass popped off
the motor and fell to the bottom of the door.

He broke it, he gets to fix it.

That stuff does not fix. The interchange unit that slides on the track, but is
mounted to the arm, was missing. The arm from the motor had a rivet. There
was no sliding thing on the window track. I found one or two in the parts
bin, but they did not fit. I made #2 boy deal with the mess he made when he
lowered the window and if fell off the track. He did, it still does not work
right, but at least he now knows not to use the window button.

The SD became incontenant this week. I put her on ramps yesterday and found
the coolant expansion tank had crazed itself to death and was leaking G-05.
The low pressure PS hose has perished and has been slobbering fluid for months.
