Re: [MBZ] Dangling Connector Passenger Rear W163

2024-02-15 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
Got it.

That looks like a connector that’s important. I would get under there and see
if you can tell where it might have been plugged in. If you don’t see anything,
just tie it up out of the way as you’ve done and move on.

The rubber spring covers are a PITA and I’m not sure exactly why they did this.
They deteriorate over time as you can see. You can try pulling all of it off,
but I would just let it deteriorate in place. Unfortunately, these hold
moisture, so you can see where the springs are rusting. Unless you see
something concerning, ignore it, there’s nothing you can do and it likely won’t
hurt anything.

I don't think it stops at the drive train. IIRC everything about that car is
"special" like the window winders, door closers, brakes, etc on and on and on.

I've also read, but never had confirmed, that working on the wiring on those is
a nightmare because when a design change comes through they add new wires to
accommodate the change but never remove the old ones. So newer cars are made
with the old wires included, they just don't connect to anything anymore...
That's probably one of those untrue stories but its got that stink of

Re: [MBZ] O.T. The Fastest Possible Way to Spend/Lose Money

2024-02-15 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
LOL, in a 1989 Tucker Sno-Cat.

The dash panels on the machine are all flat sheets attached to a welded steel
frame. The heater vents are circular similar to a W123 but held together with a
thin spring that doesn't stay clipped in place for crap. These things vibrate
terribly in the best of times, the clips don't have a chance. The panels the
ducts are in have gotten hard and all the screw holes have broken out.

The ducts are 2" and at this point just worn out. They're hard to get on and
wont stay.

So I ordered an RV ducting kit off eBay, accidentally bought 3", whoops. Then I
got a sheet of 1/8" acrylic and made a new panel. This was dumb, acrylic is
much too brittle. Got the sheet cut to approximately the right shape, got a
duct installed. The eBay has vents that clip together, way better than the
Tucker ones, still not as good as a W123 though.

Anyway, made myself a new panel, cut a slit in the 3" duct to neck it down to
2" and held it on with a clamp: https://photos.app.goo.gl/gFT5z3pejRbjfRJk7

It flows air wy better than it did before. If it ever snows I'll at least
be able to defrost the windshield. I need to rig the other side with a similar,
but better deal and remake the panel for this side. I'm thinking an HDPE sheet
would work better and be less brittle. Found a place online to get them.

The machine is for sale if anybody wants a big toy:
https://photos.app.goo.gl/KD93dGt6xMVH73qh9

We're going to start at $35,000 but would accept $30,000. Trying to sell off 2
machines to buy 1 newer one. We don't really have enough operators for all the
machines we have anyway...

2024-02-15 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes
No doubt, there would be other hurdles, but if you just wanted the look
of the Rolls, you could likely solve the problems without rebuilding a
Rolls.

I am sure I must have told the story about my mechanic son working on a
vintage Rolls that essentially had no brakes. If I recall correctly it
had some sort of hydraulic setup that ran off of the transmission. Parts
were either unobtainable or so expensive that it made no sense. They
installed a vacuum booster intended for a Chevy Corvette and that helped
a bit. Ultimately, they swapped the left side brake shoes to the right
side and vice versa, so that the leading shoe was opposite of what it
had been, and that helped a lot. My son did not think the brakes were
all that wonderful even then, but the owner was satisfied. He only drove
it in parades or something like that so didn't care that they were not
state of the art.

Re: [MBZ] Widow Is Coming To Grips...

2024-02-15 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
You would think, but that tan colour doesn’t photograph well for some reason.
I’ve seen several instances where it ends up looking weirdly different from
everything around it. That’s the case here, as I’ve verified with the owner
that the seats are, in fact, the same colour as the rest of the interior.

I’ve spoken to the owner several times over the past year. She’s weirdly
religious, as in she infuses it into nearly everything she says, someone who I
would refer to as “running at a different frequency” than the rest of us. Nice
lady, just a little quirky, sort of. If you approach her and somehow don’t sit
well with her, she cuts you off and you’re done.

I tried engaging with her when the car was first listed and doing no more than
asking about the front seat colour, she cut me off. I’ve gone back to her in
subsequent listings using sock puppet accounts to try and gather additional
information.

I suspect her behavior, rather than the price of the car, is what’s causing her
diffculty in selling it.

I’m sort of half interested if it could get to a more reasonable (for me)
price. A nearly 30 year old M120 that’s been sitting for a least a year will
not be fun or cheap to resurrect.

That’s actually a pretty nice deal from the looks and description.

In September of 2017 I bought a 1998 wagon just like this with 170k on the
clock, paying $3300 to a Mom and Pop dealer over in Pinellas County. One owner,
great VMI, dealer maintained, spent it’s life in Tallahassee, so it never saw
snow.

Fast forward to the present, and it’s still running, rarely needs anything more
than regular oil and fluid changes, with over 220k on the clock. I’ve
definitely gotten my money out of it.

W210s are the Camrys of the Mercedes line.

I don’t think he is a religious wacko like this woman is. Icing on the cake: I
checked her out and she is either a psychologist or psychiatrist. One of those
as I recall. After understanding her behavior (sort of) was able to easily
re-engage with a sock puppet account by peppering my speech with various
Judeo-Christian references such as “God Bless”, “Good Lord!” and so on. She was
my next new buddy after that. I disengaged gracefully so that I still have that
conduit should I want to reach out.

She is such a wacko that I have to believe she’s either alienated, frightened,
or blown off nearly anyone and everyone who has reached out to her through the
ad. I also believe that the car has probably been sitting since her partner
cacked and it’s not in good shape as a result. Think M119 x 2, sort of. The
youngest would love it. To this day he still misses Tarek's S500 coupe.

There is something wrong with that article! It says,

When Hermann died at age 62 in October 2002,

That means Hermann was born in 1940.

Greg, 53,

That means Greg was born in 1949, when Hermann was 9.

and brother, Mark, 50, took over running Bentley Zionsville

That means Mark was born in 1952, when Hermann was 12.

That allowed the mechanic to found Albers Rolls-Royce in 1963 as
a service garage and later develop a solid luxury car business.

That means Hermann founded Albers Rolls-Royce when he was 23.

I have seen that red glyptal stuff on trimmers.

I also saw, when looking under my brand-new 1972 220D/8, yellow paint
marks on bolts/nuts all over, particularly on the components of the
driveshaft, like the bolts and nuts on the rubber donuts.

Re: [MBZ] OT - Taco Tuesday?

2024-02-15 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Funny you should mention it, I made goose tacos today:
https://photos.app.goo.gl/GkjifDDb7FXeu3iJ9

The meat went into the crock pot at 8am on the 10 hour setting with a barbacoa
spice packet. I turned then at the 4 hour mark and pulled at 9 hours.

It shredded up nice: https://photos.app.goo.gl/NVSHvWtwDoQXHfia6

I thought it was a little bland so I added 2 teaspoons of fajita spice.

This was my third try at this. Goose legs are REALLY tough, they need all the
time and they MUST be covered in braising liquid

No pictures of the actual tacos but they went down pretty good.

Considering how much the car was worth when it rolls out of the showroom 20
