Bummer. just last weekend I gave away one I'd gotten at a junk yard (out of
a Ford van, fits a 240D). The guy turned it in for scrap value. Could have
mailed it to you.

You should be able to order one from your local parts store just make

Your compressur will be a right hand or left hand the direction is

You can also find one in a junk yard full of older American cars.

Only the stuff on weather radar that is colored darker yellow or (everyone

[MBZ] 240D running a little hot

2006-06-17 Thread LT Don

Had to head to Ames IA (an hour east) today for a training.

On the way back, I noticed that the 240D was running a bit hotter than
normal. Granted, this is the first day of the summer when the temps have
been in the mid-90s. By hot I mean that the gauge was about half way
between the 175 degree mark and whatever temp that next tic mark is between
175 and 250. Thermostat is 185 degrees I think.

Thermostat was new last year so I doubt that is an issue. Alternator / water
pump v-belt tight. Coolant topped off right where it should be.

I noticed two things today

1. There was a strong (30 mph) wind out of the south. I was driving straight
east/west. Seems almost like the car runs hotter if I am fighting a strong
cross-breeze. Just my imagination or is there something to this? Today isn't
the first time I've noticed this -- there seems to be a definite pattern
here.

2. I noticed this evening that some of the fins on the radiator are sort of
buggered-up and clumped together. Rock striket, etc. Should I try to
straighten these out (gently and carefully) for better airflow? I did note
that there are not too many insects jammed in between the fins.

Re: [MBZ] 240D running a little hot

2006-06-17 Thread LT Don

I think it was a function of the hot weather. Normally, even with the AC on,
the temp sits just a hair above the 175 mark (I am guessing about 180/185).

On 6/16/06, Marshall Booth [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

thru the radiator to be cooled.

The engine fan? You mean the electric fan? I have NEVER seen that operate

I thought that was part of the AC package and was supposed to run.

[MBZ] W123 thermostat

2006-06-19 Thread LT Don

Changed out the thermostat on my '77 240D this evening. The old one lets
the car run cooler than the new one I installed last fall, so I put the
old one back in.

Noticed that I have no gasket at the thermostat housing and didn't see one
on Rusty's online catalog. There is one gasket shown but it has only two
holes vice the three holes/bolts at the thermostat housing, so I think it is
for lower toward the engine block.

Should there be a gasket here, other than the rubber O-Ring that is on the
thermostat?

Topic two. Does anyone have one of the bolts used for installing the
thermostat in his/her junk pile that you can mail to me? I have two of the
originals, but the third bolt is too long and has some washers stacked up to
make the correct length. This isn't my doing -- the car was this way when I
got it. I'd like to get back to stock bolts.

Peter --

I understand that hotter is better (with our cars and with our females).
However, there is that small, nagging voice that start to whisper into my
ear when the temp needle leaves the 175F and starts to climb to the 212
mark.

Hey, I am Iowa. If I start to approach 212F climbing OUR hills, I have to
wonder what will happen if I head out this summer to visit my parents in
WV. (!!)

Anal retentive as I am, I am afraid I'd have to get yet another driver's
seat (due to brown spots) from Kaleb if I saw the temp needle swing up near
the 250F mark. It was there once, but that was when I broke a alternator /
water pump belt.

Perhaps this is why I flew fixed wing rather than rotary wing planes.

On 6/18/06, Peter Frederick [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

No, only the rubber ring is necessary.

You should run about 175 to 195 F -- cooling is NOT better, as engine
efficiency is lower at lower temps. After all, the radiator will dump
MORE heat the hotter the coolant and the cooler the exterior air
(larger temperature drop). With proper coolant, no engine damage will
occur so long as the temp guage is out of the red range.

My 300D will start to heat up above 85C on long grades in the mountains
in the summer with the AC on -- never gotten above 100, though.

[MBZ] Mobil 1 Truck SUV

2006-06-26 Thread LT Don

Just noticed (AFTER driving 1100 miles) that the Mobil 1 I have on hand is
the 5W-30 Truck SUV rather than the 5W-40 that is intended for diesels.

Assuming that the 5W-40 isn't now available in my area -- I think that is
the case -- what is my best backup oil? A local store does have Rotella and
I might be able to find Delvac 1 at the local truck stop, although I've
never actually look for it there.

While M-1 15W-50 hasn't been approved by Mercedes (at least not yet) it
carries the same CF API rating and ACEA B3, B4 ratings. I would not
hesitate to use it in MY diesels.

M-1 ESP formula M 5W-40 was supposed to start showing up (Mercedes says,
available in the USA on 5/15/06) in the US last month. I think I'd
choose the 5W-40 Turbo Diesel Truck or the Delvac 1 formulas for older
diesels if I had a choice, but the newer oil should be JUST fine - if
 you can find it.

Old formula M-1 15W-50 was primarily group IV oil. M-1 15W-50 Ext is a
mix of group IV and V oil - much more group V then the old formula.
Costs more because group V oil is more expensive than group IV.

Re: [MBZ] Mobil 1 Truck SUV

2006-06-27 Thread LT Don

You are an engineer, aren't you? I can smell them -- my son is one.

On 6/26/06, Peter Frederick [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Actually, viscosity ratings are more complicated. In the old days, you
have an oil of a particular viscosity (actually flow rate at a certain
temperature). Petroleum based oils have a significant change of
viscosity with change in temperature character -- when hot, they get
VERY thin. When cold, of course, they aquire the flow characteristics
of molassas, what ever the room temperature viscosity.

The solution was to add materials that didn't change viscosity so much,
so that an oil mixture would have multi-viscosity characteristics --
that is, flow like say a 10 wt oil cold and a 30 wt oil hot. The
rating is cold viscosity rating number first, followed by hot viscosity
rating, so a 10W-40 oil flows like a single rating 10W oil cold and
like a single rating 40W hot.

The base fluid used in synthetic oils doesn't change viscosity with
temperature nearly as much as petroleum base oils, and in fact is
fairly hard to rate using methods for petroleum base oils. 0W-30
synthetic oil pours like cold diesel fuel, but I'd not want to use
diesel fuel as an engine oil -- wouldn't stay in the engine!

The smaller molecules will likely burn off first, since they are more
volatile, but I suspect there really aren't that many in synthetic oil.
The majority of oil consumption in a good condition engine is burnoff
from the cylinder walls as they are exposed during combustion, along
with whatever amount burns off the valves from clearance on the stems.
Synthetics are very resistant to oxidation (remember the frying pan on
the grill ads?) so they don't burn off the cylinder walls, and the
molecules are fairly large so they won't evaporate. No modern oil has
components light enough to actually vaporize, I would venture -- they
would also carbonize too easily, leading to excessive sludge.

What the viscosity of a mixture is would be hard to determine without
actually testing it, and I suspect what you would have would be xxW-50
-- the viscosity extenders would work their magic more at the hot end
than the cold end.

Fun stuff, eh? No wonder oil threads go on forever!

Auto stores and NONE of them had ANY Mobil-1 0W-40, 15W-50 OR 5W-40.
As much as I know you guys out there like Mobil-1, it just is not
worth my effort any more.
So I go over to the Amsoil site and see a selection of synthetics to
choose from. Given my current mood, I'm inclined to buy a 30 gallon
jug and be done with it and let Mobil rot in hell where they belong.

Does anyone have a recommendation as to which Amsoil is best?

Thanks

Found the Mobil 1 15W-50 Ext. today in the WalMart in Carroll IA. I cleaned
out the supply on the shelf (7 quarts). Who knows how much longer they will
be offering it?

I also noticed that they have stopped carrying most computer stuff. They did
offer a couple of cordless mice and keyboards plus some blank DVD-Rs (no
CD-Rs or CD-RWs any longer) and a couple of printers. They also had two
different routers for sale. Beyond that, the shelves had been reallocated to
video game stuff. Used to be you could pick up a CD Writer and stuff like
that, but apparently no more.

Yea, I-80 does cut thru the fields. Extremely boring, and I _live_ here!

You need to take an exit and look around some.

In case any of you out there are (1) independently wealthy and bored, or (2)
willing to travel, I highly (let me make that HIGHLY) recommend crossing
Iowa on Highway 30. Runs east / west from border to border. When you get to
the intersection with Highway 4, turn south and come a couple of miles south
to my house. I will put the coffee pot on.

On 30 you will actually see Iowa. Same with Highway 20, about an hour north
of me.

And if you are coming on two wheels, oh my Gawd, bring it on! Best
straight-drive road you will find.

The Lexus influence was clear to me.

I don't see it as a Lexus influence, so much as the influence of spreading

One of my favourite quips concerns the w116 450sel 6.9 -- auto writers
loved
those barges, supercars that they were. But what other supercar came with
a
set of manually-adjusting rear view mirrors? (And, yes, a nasty plastic
owner's wallet.)

BMW got away with its, err, cheesy interiors for years because they played
it as part of their 'driver's machine' image. How Mercedes passed on
MB-Tex
(and for that matter, it's second rate leather) for years to people paying
huge prices is an enduring mystery to me. Right up there with being able
to
sell things like the CD models as 'luxury' coupes. Huh?

Lexus didn't win over people initially just because of their association
with Toyota, and its rep for doing things right (not completely deserved,
by
the way, I am a Honda fan myself). They did it by treating owners like
royalty in the service department. And through little touches like washing
(actually, more like a mild detailing, at least in this area) for free
once
a week. And every time the car came into the service area.

Word of mouth. Image building. The Japanese understand this, mostly. The
Koreans are catching on.

The Germans, OTOH, work from If it is German, it must be the best (don't
get me started on Bosch and one or two others). Translated, this
unfortunately in the past worked out to You vill take vhat we zink is
best,
and you vill like it. This reached its nadir of insolence when Audi
initially reacted to the 'unintended acceleration' publicity by blaming
its
customers.

Ironically enough, the US auto industry is now probably building some of
the
best cars it's come out with for 30 years or more, better powertrains,
ERGONOMICS, designs that don't look like they came from brilliant minds.
But
no one cares anymore.

[MBZ] cheap winter beater for sale -- keep your Benz out of the salt

2006-07-27 Thread LT Don

Ok, sports fans, daughter-unit bought a new college car this evening. Her
high school car is for sale. Someone is going to get one hell of a deal on
this -- in fact, I am thinking of buying it myself.

1989 Pontiac Sunbird. Butt-cute (has been sideswiped and the driver's door
closes only to the first stop -- easily fixed at your local pick pull).
Some minor rust issues but no rust-thru's. I was planning to hit it with
POR-15 before she headed off to college, but not now that it is for sale.

By the way, the car's name is Kurtie. Took 3/4 tank of fuel to go round trip
from home to Kansas City -- probably about 35 mpg+. $200 audio system (what
else would a high school student have?), AM/FM/CD. I still have not found
the on/off button on it, so when I drive it I just turn the volume to zero.
I do NOT like Megan's choice of radio stations. Brand new left front tire (4
weeks ago) and new exhaust system (2 weeks ago).

The important stuff is under the hood. Bullet-proof four-banger engine. Only
80K on the car. Brother-in-law (my mechanic) installed new water pump,
timing belt and head gasket at about 65K. Absolutely no oil loss. Had
Mobil-1 until the last oil change (2 weeks ago) since when we bought it when
Megan was 15 (she is now 19).

You could easily drive this car coast to coast a couple of times without
worrying. I am very anal about auto maintenance and that philosophy has
trickled down to Kurtie.

$1000 firm. Pick up in Jefferson IA. Don't bring a car hauler -- you can
drive it home. I will be happy to pick you up at Des Moines or Ames airport
and give you a sofa bed for the night.

Purchase price is less than fixing one winter's worth of rust on your Benz.
No pressure -- this thing will be sucked up within three days of being
advertised. Good, inexpensive, reliable cars are hard to find and this is
definitely one.

Ok -- why is Megan selling it? She was recently involved in a head-on
altercation between a friend's car and a telephone pole (at 35 mph). She got
smacked in the face with airbags. ... Kurtie doesn't have airbags and she
now (having been there) wants a car with airbags.

So, if you want a winter beater or have a high school student of you own you
needs wheels, this would be a good candidate.

And if no one wants it, that is cool. I sort of want it myself.

Re: [MBZ] Electrical Theory

I think it is the other way around. The alternator dies (but you don't know

I've seen this, thing, a couple of times - a battery will die and the

working extra hard trying to keep the battery charged - which it can;t do
because the battery is shorted, etc - so the alt dies because it's running

Guilty as charged. But it isn't necessarily to avoid eBay fees, it is to
sell the item dirt cheap but not lose money on the legitimate fees. I think
everyone knows what is happening when they bid. And I don't inflate too

for a penny, charging actual mailing fees, and then losing money when eBay
tacks on their costs.

I am not far from NOT accepting PayPal for that reason. I can wait for a
cashier's check to arrive in the mail.

I can remember when having a successful auction on eBay did not require a
postal scale and a spreadsheet.

Mercedes has never made the schematic of the climate control unit

likely out of luck.

Most problems can be cured just by resoldering the connections!

Speaking of AMG ...

I live in a small rural Iowa town in the midst of the agricultural region (
http://www.jeffersoniowa.com/). There is a law firm across the street from
my office and we occasionally see an M-Class Benz or a Lexus SUV parked
there, driven in from the big city by an attorney. We do have a late
model E320 and a G-class here in town but both are owned by an old fart
retired farmer and his wife. I have a 240D and our auditor drives a 10 year
old (?) C-class gasser. That is it for our local Benz community.

Last Thursday afternoon, I looked out our office window and saw what I think
was a late 70s or early 80s S-Class (might have been an E-Class, couldn't
swear in a court of law).

A very nice bronze-brown in color. Had this wee tit of a spoiler on the back
of the trunk. Custom wheels (but very nice, discrete sort of custom wheels)
on what seemed to be factory size tires. I did not notice any sort of
spoiler in the front but I didn't have a good look at the front from my
angle.

I wandered across the road to see what manner of beast this might be. The
trunk emblem was not much help, for it said only AMG.

The more I looked at the car the more it looked to deserve a speeding ticket
just sitting there parked. It was either a W124 or a W126 -- I don't have
enough experience to tell between the two unless I have a tape measure.

I was in absolute lust.

I asked our administrative assistant to watch to see who was driving it and
what building he left. As luck would have it, the car disappeared while she
took a run to the loo. I went to the law office to ask who might own the car
and they gave me blank stares -- no one had been in and out all morning. The
only other shop there is a barber. Perhaps someone popped in from out of
town for a haircut?

I have a ceiling fan in my garage -- but it was there when I bought the
house.

Yea -- some folks don't know that Richarde has moved to Oklahoma.

[MBZ] on babying my 240D

2006-08-02 Thread LT Don

Daughter has her '89 Pontiac Sunbird up for sale (
http://don.homelinux.net/megan/kurtie/index.html). I drove it to work today
so I could park it in a high traffic area with the For Sale sign there for
everyone to see.

I've not driven this car much, but almost fell in love with it today. Very
fuel efficient (30 mpg combined), peppy, and surprisingly roomy for my 6'4
frame. The AC is ice cold, so much so that I had to turn it down with an
outside air temp of 95F.

Since I hate to drive my 240D around when they are putting salt on the
roads, I am wondering if I shouldn't just buy this car from Megan and use it
for two purposes: (1) my one-mile each way commute to work, which if I
understand what Marshall tells me is NOT good for a diesel, and (2) all of
my winter driving, when the Iowa DOT is keeping the roads open with salt.

What are the implications of driving a diesel only on weekends (or maybe
once every few weekends for 100 mile road trips), and not at all during the
winter? If I put it into winter storage, what should I do other than to
disconnect the battery and throw a cover over it?

It rips my heart out each spring to see how much new rust has formed over
the winter. I'd like to delay the inevitable for as long as possible.

Thoughts?

D.

I could crash my motorcycle sans-helmet and hit the pavement face first --
and would come out of it still looking better than you do!
