Mersenne: Big problems with temporary files
Hi! I have been running the program for several years. About a year ago I had a problem on my WIN2K system - prime95 had problems reading the intermediate files when starting, renaming the backup file was also not succesful which ultimately means that prime 95 restarts the prime test on the number - thus loosing a lot of work! I solved the problem then by installing the NT-service. Now I'm running XP and I just discovered that the problem is back. I have checked and set permissions on the file and directories. I have checked the sourcecode - but did'nt get much wiser. I have made my own copies of the intermediate files, and manually cpoied them to the prime95 folder - this does'nt work today! Please help! Mersenne: Re: Big problem . .
Thanks for the replies! I have checked the attributes etc on the files and directories. Don't forget that I have been running this program for a long time on this box with no problems. I have teted RAM with RamTest, it's OK. Gordon Spence told me, in a mail, has experienced the same problem, but did not find a solution even after consulting with George. I think there is an issue here: How many other machines has this problem - and thus is wasting a lot of CPU? I think there is a lot of boxes running in companies where nobody is checking the results file. I would like to suggest, that this kind of error should automatically be reported back to the project. These have been tested once already, but the first run had one or more error. As we saw in another thread, this means the first test has less than a 50% chance of being correct. Retesting these exponents now rather than waiting for double-checking to get this high makes sense to me. Yes ... in fact it makes sense for LLtests with errors to be automatically recycled (but only the first time), since the worst that will happen is that there will be an early verification. If there are two results with the same residual this is very, very probably correct, even if both runs had errors - this may well happen, at least with some versions of Prime95/mprime, when the exponent is very close to a FFT run length crossover. Re: Mersenne: Big problems with temporary files
That's the problem with silent errors. You may not know about them for a long time. By the time you learn about them, you will have completely forgotten about any configuration changes you might have done to the system that could have created the problem. I would suggest popping up a modeless dialog box in the case of such errors. It would inform the operator of the problem, and would wait for him to press OK, but would continue processing in the meantime. Provision could be made to send an email to some selected address so that the operator would be notified in case the machine is one that is not regularly accessed.
