Re: [meteorite-list] Polygraph testing legality
Polygraph instruments are not meant to read your mind. They only measure changes to the autonomic nervous system (BP, galvinic skin response, heart rate, etc.). When properly calibrated, the instrument does exactly that. You can't beat a peoperly calibrated polygraph instrument. You can, however, beat/fool the examiner and as Rob already stated, there are instances of pathological liars defeating the exam. Their autonomic nervous system doesn't respond like the norm and therefore deception is not indicated during the exam questioning. Merry Christmas everyone! Not good. My take on the Meteorite Men television show is that there is far too much emphasis on the monetary value of meteorites, and too little on the scientific importance. There is sooo much to be learned on so many levels regarding these wonderful rocks from space, that the program could carve a respectable niche within a populace of men, women and children yearning for knowledge of meteorites and meteoritical science. Instead, the producers appear to be pandering to the lowest common denominator in the quest for ratings, and the results are unquestionably apparent from the flood of bogus meteorites on ebay to the solicitors of slag that the Count has encountered. Sad. Although I don't blame Steve and Geoff for this situation, I do hope that they can inspire their producers and sponsors to take the high road toward intelligent network programming. gary On Jul 2, 2011, at 8:48 PM, Count Deiro wrote: Hello to all, May I share an experience I had yesterday afternoon that saddened me and left me questioning the merits of sensationalizing the trade in meteorites. I recently began inserting a free announcement in a nationally read online list stating simply that I BUY METEORITES. Included in the announcement are some simple qualifying tests that I hope will weed out most of the wrongs. I advise that if it turns out that you have a meteorite I will charge you $25.00 for the initial examination and I will help you get it confirmed and classified if you wish. If the find is terrestrial I will not charge any fee and I will suggest you get a second opinion. Well, this has worked out pretty well. I've had a half dozen calls in the last six weeks and several of those have resulted in finds. One particular 100 gram individual has already been classified as a rare type and I was able to secure a nice slice for my collection. Then this happened. I received a call from a young woman who said she was in a neighboring State and had traded all she had for over a hundred pounds of irons and wanted to know how much were they going for. She used a few meteoritical terms to proudly describe her acquisitions, but I could tell she had gotten whatever she had learned from whatever source a bit wrong. She talked fast and excitedly saying her meteorites were really heavy and magnetic. She insisted she had studied and knew they were meteorites. All of them. She went on to say that she had sold her fifth wheel trailer in Quartsite, Arizona and the man who bought it was a rock dealer and had suggested she trade everything in the travel trailer for these meteorites. She now wanted to cash in and would I be interested. She said she would meet me in a few days, but low and behold she arrived the next afternoon. Now picture this. It was 112 degrees when she and her husband and five kids, ages three months to thirteen, arrive in a beat up Chevy truck with all their possessions stacked up in the back. And no air conditioning. After I dispensed bottles of water and got the tribe into the shade, she excitedly announced let's look at the meteorites and ordered her quiet and unassuming husband to lug the boxes and briefcases out from under the stroller and baby food into my garage. The instant the first of the samples were lovingly laid out on my bench it was apparent to me they were terrestrial rocks. She had at least fifty pounds of slag and even large and small chunks of basalt and sandstone. She picked up the rocks one after the other for me to admire while all the while chattering inanely about how they were stony iron or irons and pointing out features to prove her identification and get me interested. I finally stopped her selling pitch by recommending we cut a few. I cut a dozen of the best prospects which all turned out to be terrestrial. I decided I would have to tell her as tactfully as I could. I went and selected some rights and wrongs from my collection and proceeded to teach a little meteorite identification 101. It didn't take long for her to realize that she didn't have any meteorites. I told her how sorry I was, and that I wanted her to have meteorites, and would have been pleased to do business with her. But it unfortunately wasn't the case. She and her husband looked stricken. She said I gave everything we had. I mentioned that she should not take my opinion and get a second opinion. I suggested some other collectors and dealers. I also gave her the

[meteorite-list] Geotagging
I don't recall this subject having been posted before. My apologies if it is redundant. Imagine you've just found a new strewn field and want to keep the location secret for a while. Still, you take a digital photo of one of your new space rocks with your GPS-enabled smartphone and post it on the Internet to display your new find. Without realizing it, you have potentially just broadcast the location of your find to the entire world. Those of you who are not familiar with the term geotagging, might want to read on. Geotagging is a process of adding geographical identification to photographs, video, websites and SMS messages. It is the equivalent of adding a 10-digit grid coordinate to everything you post on the internet. Geotags are automatically embedded in pictures taken by smartphones with built-in GPS (if that function is enabled). Digital photos have used geotagging for quite some time. Certain formats like the JPEG format allow geographical information to be embedded within the image and then read by picture viewers, showing the exact location where a picture was taken. Google geotagging for more information on the subject. If you want to avoid displaying too much information from your digital pics, disable the geotagging function on your smartphone. I hope you find the information useful. __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

I never saw the movie, but there are plenty of historical references to cannoneers using scrap of all kinds (metal, glass, rocks, gravel, lengths of chain, etc.). The common commercially-made equivalent ammunition was grapeshot and canister rounds. Getting hit with grapeshot or a canister round would definitely make your eyes water. Here is an example from Wing's book:This entire experience seemed incredible and unbelievable. How could a small collection of stones - not over 100 - and over half of them picked up out of my rock garden in 1969, produce 25 earth-type quartz meteorites when never before had a quartz meteorite been known! ... But in this investigation, the unthinkable thing seems to be the common thing. And again, after thinking things over, my unbelievable collection of quartz meteorites needed to balance it off; they simply could not be alone. There must also be many other kinds of meteorites here if my quartz ones were authentic. And Wing goes on to 'discover' 'authentic' meteoritic petrified wood and meteoritic fossils, etc. The wingstars were everywhere! All you have to do is look! Yikes! If I understand your approach correct, your non-targeted focus of investigation leads directly to a highly diverse pattern. The last sentence of the abstract reads: This molecular complexity, which provides hints on heteroatoms chronological assembly, suggests that the extraterrestrial chemodiversity is high compared to terrestrial relevant biological- and biogeochemical-driven chemical space. The high level of extraterrestrial chemodiversity vs. the less diverse terrestrial chemical space - could that mean that development of life could depend on a kind of reduction of diversity? Caused by selection (= targetting?)? Life would be essentially linked to a process of picking up elements out of the construction kit? But than it begins to play by combining them? Wouldn't that point to the necessity to make a strong distinction between diversity and complexity? Could that mean that the complexity of terrestrial biological and biochemical space is a result of reduction of (initial) diversity? I'd like to help you out and I mean this in the most thoughtful and kindest way possible, so please don't take it negatively or have any anger towards me. Make sure you include shipping costs when you were determining the total amount of the payment you need to send to the seller and then send a check and then say you couldn't afford the FedEx shipping costs if that is what you agreed to buy from the seller? You have said this in the past about not having money to pay for something or to pay for the shipping costs. It's good to ask for help if you are not experienced in sending payments outside of Canada beyond Paypal. This sounds like you decided to send a check for the meteorites and then were going to decide about a payment for the shipping as a separate payment or to pay for shipping later on. Is this why you stated you couldn't afford the FedEx shipping costs after you had sent your personal Canadian paper check? This doesn't sound right why you wouldn't determine the full amount due to the seller for the items with shipping and or insurance

Howard, Respectfully... Reference your comment I laugh at how the newbies expect the veterans with the battle scars to tell them exacty how to Hunt Meteorites or Sell on Ebay or send money overseas. Get off the couch and do your own legwork. Why should it bother YOU that someone should ask for for advice or assistance? Go back through the history of this list and you will see literally thousands of instances where dealers and professional hunters have freely offered advice and assistance to newbies. You don't think people stay on this list for the ads, do you? You don't think people stay on this list for the disputes, cyber fist fights, etc, do you? I personally stay on this list (and I'm sure other do to) so we CAN ask for advice and assistance from the pros. I won't answer as to the motives or rationale of why dealers and professional hunters freely offer advice and assistance to newbies, but suffice to say that I (and I know hundreds, maybe thousands of others over the history of this list) appreciate ALL the assistance offered by ANYONE on this list. I ordered a small slice of Gujba, just a couple of grams, for my type set from Eric Twelker a short while ago. When it hadn't arrived, I inquired if it had been sent and when, just to make sure it hadn't gotten lost in the mail. He responded quickly that he was away but would check on it as soon as he returned home. Finding he had made a mistake, he apologized that he hadn't yet sent it and said it'd be on its way that day. The auctions were listed with starting bids of $.99. (note: he is NOT a member of the IMCA.) A few hours before the auctions were to close at about 7PM Saturday evening, they were both cancelled. The one I was bidding on still had a high bid showing of $.99; there was no bid on the other auction. A few hours after they were cancelled, both were re-listed and this time with a starting bid of $10.00 (one of the item numbers is 330356143296) As I remember from an earlier thread, FleaBay does not care if a seller breaks his/her implied contract by cancelling an auction (I could be wrong). I definitely can NOT prove it, but by circumstantial evidence, it *appears* that Mr. Mulvany did not want to sell a specimen for just $.99 so he just cancelled the auction(s). Quite a while ago there was some good constructive comments made about our original page and I've tried to build this new page to address everything mentioned and more. If you like the page and wish to be added please reply back with your full name and ebay account name. The only requirement is that you be in good standings with the members of the meteorite-list and the IMCA. You do not have to be a member of the IMCA but if you were a IMCA member and your membership was revoked then you are not eligible. Most everything on the page should be easy to understand. One thing I will mention is the ebay Sellers last update time stamp. Part of the code I wrote polls the listed sellers to see how many auctions they are currently running. The time stamp represents the last time this routine was run. Therefore the number of listings I show may be off from the true number by about a 15 to 30 minute time span. As you say, your question poses many more questions. To start with, someone who leads expeditions to find new meteorites. Someone who extensively documents their finds and provides said information and samples to the scientific community for further research. Someone, for example, like Dr Svend Buhl. Richard Norton passed away last week, after a long illness. I had known fot quite some time that Richard was in poor health, still the news of his death came as a shock. Last time I called Dorothy, I heard piano playing in the background, Chopin and very good, I thought it was a CD playing or the radio, but Dorothy told me it was Richard, and we stopped a moment to listen, it was beautiful, I had no idea Richard was such a virtuoso. I had met Richard and Dorothy several years ago in Tucson, Thanks to Twink. I was very much a new comer then , and I found Richard to be bright, friendly, funny and so approchable. I still remember showing him a slice of Tafassasset, he looked at it with his loupe for quite a while, then told me that this meteorite left him speechless. Dorothy laughed, apparently Richard was rarely speechless. And now there is that great big hole in the middle of the Meteorite Community. That said, IMCA does more than any other organization to help insure authenticity of marketed meteorites. Note the word help, as they can't do it all and shouldn't be expected to do so. Before taking shots or laughing at IMCA, why not add some value to the debate of what makes for a better international community of meteorite exchange? I am an IMCA member and very much appreciate everything that they do (a handful of members and directors in particular, which is always the case in a large organization). That said, I do not personally agree with everything IMCA does -- and in some cases does not do -- but I've picked up the phone in those cases, spoken with directors, shared some thoughts which were intended to be productive, and supported them in full otherwise. It is impossible for a large group to satisfy the desires of every single member, not to mention, in this case, every collector on the meteorite list. But what say the detractors put in some effort and show up with a better mouse trap before glibly mocking the cheese? It is so easy to throw darts, and yet it takes a lot of effort to affect true, positive change. Lastly re: IMCA, this endless debate re: what constitutes a fair price is out of IMCA's realm and, beyond that, just plain tired. A fair price is what someone is willing to pay, period, so if it's not fair to you then don't pay it and have a nice day. The issue of allegedly dishonest Moroccan dealers also floated to the surface, yet again, in this most recent thread. I've had experience with several of those dealers over the years, and have always found them to be reputable. That is not to say that every transaction has gone smoothly, as from time to time they haven't. But at the end of the day, even when things haven't gone perfectly, it has been my experience that most deals run quite smoothly. And in the event where there is a misunderstanding -- usually emerging from the simple fact that I am unable to speak their native tongue as a second language as they rather effectively communicate in mine -- things tend to get sorted out in the end. Re: [meteorite-list] -2 arrested update (Dude-- Where's My Caredition)
Steve, Read the article again. A 66 year old lady confronted two burglers on her property last October. Given that, Sonny and Mike are lucky they only had to pay a $2K fine. They might have been shot. I like and respect Sonny and Mike, but if they didn't ask permission in the first place, they had no business on the pproperty and they only have themselves to blame for the outcome. Regarding the Judge and his Get out of Dodge statement. That's not uncommon. If you've ever seen some of the videos of cops in action, you'll see that they tell suspicious people to get out of neighborhoods all the time. With regards to a land owner failing to give you a reason why you couldn't search his property... what makes you think he has an obligation to do so? It is enough that he owns the land and has said No. With all due respect to you, persuing it further with the man is pretty arrogant. Regards, Dave - Original Message - From: meteorh...@aol.com To: meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com Sent: Thursday, April 02, 2009 5:20 PM Subject: Re: [meteorite-list] -2 arrested update (Dude-- Where's My Caredition) List, I haven't talked with either Sonny or Mike yet, but some of this story smells a little fishy. Not that you can believe anything you see or read in the media, as stories seldom get confirmation before deadlines have to be reached, and stories tend to get sensationalized for sales and ratings purposes. After all, the first story just gave the teaser info and for only $28 more you can read the rest of the story on the paper's website. One thing that sticks out in the second story, was that it was reported that Honorable Judge Jerry M. Daniel told the guys to each pay their $2,000 fine then told them to get out of dodge.“ Now, if he actually said that, isn't that a bit strange? I mean, after child molesters pay their debt to society, even they still get to move back into their old communities. Does a judge actually have authority to ban people from an entire county from the bench? Does this imply that meteorite hunters are worse than child molesters? It was mentioned that there often is a good ole boys network that supercedes the rule of law in many places. I would never imply that this might be the case here, but it makes one wonder. Of course, I can understand someone not wanting people on their property. And that is why it is always good to get permission to hunt, and if that permission is in writing, all the better. I had an Aha experience when I was driving with a fellow meteorite hunter at West a couple of weeks ago as we drove up on a land owner and I stopped, got out and introduced myself, and asked for permission to hunt on his ground. The man said quite plainly No. So I asked him Why not? And he could not (or would not) give me a reason. We talked a little more, when I asked him if he was planning to look himself, and he said he was too busy to do it himself. Again, I asked him why I couldn't look. He did not say I don't want you spooking my cattle. Or I don't want the liability if you get hurt. Or I don't want you making money off of something that I would just as soon let rust away. He didn't offer a good reason or even a bad reason for that matter. When it was obvious I wasn't going to get permission, I excused myself and went back to the car to go find another land owner down the road to ask. When I got in the car, my friend asked me: You know why he doesn't want to let you hunt don't you? I said No, why? He stated matter of factly: He didn't want you to find his Marijuana Patch. Aha!!! Of course I don't know if that was the real case, but if it was, it made a lot of sense, and it would explain why he couldn't give me a logical reason on why he didn't want me on his ground. If he had a $500,000 cash crop growing out there, only bad could come out of someone wondering around his land. I am not saying that Sonny and Mike almost stumbled onto a secret garden in Georgia, or that the judge and other law enforcement personnel might have been partners in some Southern Mafia where they would want ALL meteorite hunters to stay out of the ENTIRE county and away from their retirement fund. I am just saying something seems a little fishy with this story. I am sure we will never know the full story. Re: [meteorite-list] -2 arrested update (Dude-- Where's My Caredition)
Hi Steve, I'll briefly reply in the same manner... In a message dated 4/2/2009 7:05 PM meteorh...@aol.com writes: Steve said: Were they actually burglars, or were they just knocking on her door asking to use the phone for their broken down car? I am sure they were probably burglars. But my point is, just because a newspaper says something, doesn't make it so. Almost EVERY meteorite story ever published has minor if not major flaws in them. And these are not typically stories where a reporter's bias could be blamed for the bad journalism. Almost ALL journalism is shotty today. I just don't believe anything in print, just because it is in print. Maybe Sonny and Mike are lucky to only have to pay $2,000. Maybe they were unlucky to have to pay $2,000. Yes, they might have been shot. I like and respect Sonny and Mike too. I agree, without asking permission, they did not belong there. *** The point I was making about the landowner and the burglers was to illustrate that Sonny and Mike (or anyone in a similar position) doesn't necessarily know the background or local history of the area and what suspicions and fears may be present, hence, my follow-on about the possibility of their getting shot. The bottom line is I think we all agree that getting permission first in the only way to go. *** Steve said: Thanks for the correction Dave. I think I have only seen the phrase Get the hell out of Dodge in old western movies, usually relating to Dodge City, Kansas. But arrogant law men are slightly different than judges sitting on a bench with a stenographer recording every statement. Besides, is Hollywood's perspective always the way it really happens in life? Of course, IF Mike and Sonny had already made a plea agreement, or simply plead guilty (whether they really were guilty or not) throwing themselves at the mercy of the court, the judge I presume could puff up his chest and say about anything he wanted. And, I don't mean to imply that if either of them were arrested again, and brought before the same judge, that he would not be more strict the second time around. I don't doubt he would throw the book at them. My preface was that this story seemed a bit fishy to me, that is all. Do judges in Georgia run for public election? Re-elect Judge Daniel, he's tough on space crime! might be a good campaign slogan. *** I've worked with the law enforcement community for 12 years and while the vast majority are there to serve the public interest, there are those (police, attorneys, and judges) who abuse their positions to the detriment of the public. In my previous post, I guess I was surprised by the fact that you appeard to find it unusual for such a comment to be made by a judge. *** Steve said: Dave, with all due respect to you, I like to engage people in conversations. Me doing so with that man had nothing to do with me being arrogant. If someone has an objection, in sales one learns to flush out those objections. If you don't know the objections, then how do you overcome them? Often times, people have very valid objections. Other times, they don't. Unless a person comes out with their excuse, or if one asks, it is hard to find out why they object. Granted, people lie. Sometimes they will say they don't want you to hunt because 23 years ago, a fisherman left a gate open and some cows got out. But usually that isn't a valid reason for never letting anyone ever come on their land again. Yes, of course, with private property, people don't have to have a reason. But usually they do have a reason. Unless it is brought out, it is often hard to rationally talk with someone about a solution. [snip] *** I thank you for the detailed explanation, but I still have issue with your idea that a land owner would owe you an explanation other than No when asked to search their property. You state above that Sometimes they will say they don't want you to hunt because 23 years ago, a fisherman left a gate open and some cows got out. But usually that isn't a valid reason for never letting anyone ever come on their land again. That is where the arrogance appears. If someone left a gate open 23 or 50 years ago and the property owner doesn't want anyone else to EVER come on the property again. So be it. You may not like the reason, but who are you to judge the validity of the decision? You also state Often times, people have very valid objections. Other times, they don't. I'll say it again... If you own the property, you have no obligation to explain why you don't want someone on your property and you sure don't have to justify or validate any reason if you decide to provide more than a NO! answer. I agree that conversation is useful, but can you also see that pushing the envelope and pressing soneone for a reason and not to say that you would actually do this, but potentially argue the

Steve, You asked: So why do you still think that I think he OWES me an explanation? As I stated in my last post, it comes from comments like Often times, people have very valid objections. Other times, they don't. or Sometimes they will say they don't want you to hunt because 23 years ago, a fisherman left a gate open and some cows got out. But usually that isn't a valid reason for never letting anyone ever come on their land again. Another comment you made regarding the issue of asking to search a property was: Granted, people lie. Well, maybe they do, but the point is, so what? It's their property and they don't need to explain past the answer... No. When you say things like the above, in the context of trying to get permission to search a property from a land owner, what is being implied is that 1) the person owes you an explanation and 2) if the person does give you a reason, that reason must somehow be validated as being reasonable by you. I apologize if I'm reading way too much into this, but I've run into a similar situation and maybe that's why I'm sensitive to this. I've had people wanting to buy property from me and they just won't take a simple NO! for an answer. They too want to ask the question Why won't you sell it to us. I'm sorry, but I don't owe them or anyone else an explanation. Even if I did provide an explanation, what then? They try to tell me why I'm wrong and should sell to them. That to me is being arrogant. One last item. I did not, nor would I ever say or imply that you were rude or that your conversations with land owners are contentious or anything like that. From all accounts, you have a stellar (no pun intended) rep. I thank you too for your courteous replies. When I clearly stated in my last post: Does he have an obligation to tell me why he said no? Of course not. And did I even imply that he was obligated to? But if you don't ask, often you don't get an answer. * So why do you still think that I think he OWES me an explanation? I don't think he owes me to let me hunt on his land, but I still ask. He didn't owe me an explanation, but I still asked for one. Besides, if someone owes you something, you demand, you don't ask. I didn't demand anything, I just asked. I wasn't rude. He wasn't rude. He didn't kick me off his driveway. He didn't even ask me to leave nor did he end the conversation. We had a short, 3 minute talk, then I left when it was evident he didn't care if meteorites would be lost. Maybe if I offered him $10,000 in exchange for hunting, he might have become interested. Then again, if he had a $500,000 crop out in the trees growing, $10,000 for hunting privileges wouldn't have probably interested him either. I didn't waste his whole day, he was doing some work, and he kept working while I was talking. Now, maybe someone talked with him before I did and offended him in such a way that he was sour to not me personally, but to meteorite hunters in general. That could have been the case. And it was, I would have loved to have found that out. But since he didn't say that, or give any reason, I just don't know. Besides, I ended up hunting on one of his neighbors ground the next day where we found the 1,673g specimen the day before the rains, so maybe it was a blessing that he said No, and that he didn't tell me why, and that I didn't overcome his objections? Then again, I might have changed his mind and I might have found 5 kilo rock on his ground instead. Who knows? It is all water under the bridge, or should I say rocks under the mud now. The projected storm track takes the storm as a Category 4 right up the mouth of Terrebonne Bay - if this holds true, my home town of Houma will be inundated under 9-12 feet of storm surge - which is not good since we sit below sea level. I'd rather be on Asteroid 4 Vesta right now. ;) Regards, clear skies, and godspeed, MIkeG . Michael Gilmer (Louisiana, USA) Member of the Meteoritical Society. ESA?s Rosetta spacecraft will make a historic encounter with asteroid (2867) Steins on 5 September 2008. The doors of ESA?s European Space Operations Centre (ESOC) in Darmstadt, Germany, will be open to the media as of 18:00 on 5 September to follow the fly-by events. First images and results will be available for presentation to the media during a press conference which will be held at ESOC the following day, Saturday 6 September at 12:00 CEST. Steins is Rosetta?s first nominal scientific target. The spacecraft will rendezvous with the asteroid in the course of its first incursion into the asteroid belt located between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter, while on its way to comet 67/P Churyumov-Gerasimenko. The study of asteroids is extremely important as they represent a sample of Solar System material at different stages of evolution ? key to understanding the origin of our own planet and of our planetary neighbourhood. The closest approach to Steins is due to take place on 5 September at 20:58 CEST (Central European Summer Time), from a distance of 800 km, during which the spacecraft will not be communicating with Earth. First ground contact with the spacecraft and announcement of successful fly-by will take place at 22:23 CEST. About a week and a half ago I received an email from Amazon telling me that there was a delay and asking me to respond if I was still interested. I responded in the affirmative and later received an email from Amazon that the new expected date was in late July. I just visited my Amazon order page and it shows that the anticipated shipping date is July 21 (and my pre-order discount has disappeared). Clicking on the book title takes me to the book description page where it is noted that the book is temporarily out of stock. Apparently Amazon is confused. Re: [meteorite-list] Greensburg Kansas Anniversary
Steve, Thank you very much for taking the time to provide such a deeply personal, heart-felt, and insightful reply. I went through a wide range of emotions while reading your post. On one extreme, feeling happy and proud for the people staying to rebuild Greensburg and on the other end of the spectrum, sad at the historical and cultural losses incurred by the populace. Your post is a great testamonial to the town and people of Greensburg. I for one will continue to keep the town and inhabitants of Greensburg in my prayers. Regards, Dave - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com Sent: Saturday, May 03, 2008 3:47 PM Subject: Re: [meteorite-list] Greensburg Kansas Anniversary Hello Dave and All, Thanks for the post. As many of you know, my house in Greensburg was destroyed by the tornado one year ago tomorrow. Well, technically, it wasn't totally destroyed then, but by the time the city came along and bulldozed it without my permission it was then totally destroyed. But it is now usually easier to just say my house was destroyed by the tornado. I have been told that the Kansas media had decided to censor themselves and they agreed not to write anything negative about the rebuilding of Greensburg as their way to help the town have the best shot at getting back on its feet. So, most everything I have read has been quite positive. The town does have some major challenges. It all goes back to that pesky Supply and Demand equation. It is translated here to the challenge of: The city needs people living there for businesses to be able to come back, but the city needs businesses there for people to want to move back. A bit of a Catch 22. Greensburg is the county seat of Kiowa county, so part of it had to be rebuilt, even if no one wanted to live there. But it does seem there are some people that do want to live there. One year ago today, there were a LOT of homes in Greensburg with For Sale Signs in their front yards. Some of those homes had been on the market for a long time, as buyers were not plentiful. So it was no surprise when so many people met with their insurance adjustors, standing in their yard with a big fat check in their hands, they decided to take their checks and move elsewhere with their money. Many of these people were older, and the choice to live in a town or city with better medical facilities was a decision most of these people faced regularly with or without EF-5 help. As a farm community two hours outside of Wichita, and an hour east of Dodge City, it is too far for most business and industry to want to consider building there. I think I read that there was 1,000 homes there before the tornado and there have been around 136 new building permits issued this year. Most people still staying in town are living in FEMAville the huge mobile home park set up with FEMA supplied white mobile homes. I am not sure how long people can stay in them. For many, they can't afford to rebuild, but they have no where else to go. Without a job, it is hard for some to want to rebuild. But there are some people that don't want to leave either. I did hear from a local friend that it was determined that it cost 20% MORE to rebuild in Greensburg than it did anywhere else in Kansas. The primary reason was that the construction workers have to commute often from and back to Dodge City every day to stay in their hotels. Top that with the need for construction workers to return to their homes (wherever that might be) on the weekends. Without a construction workforce living in the town, like all other towns have, it is just more expensive to build. Then, real estate prices have a trend to go DOWN in value in western Kansas anyway. I'm not sure, but I think about the cheapest home that could be built would be around $125,000, with most probably being between $150,000 and $250,000. Well, how many Minimum wage workers can pay a mortgage or rent on that nice of a home? With no low cost options, much of the work force is prices out of living there. I don't mean to sound to negative. The attempt here is to be maybe a bit more realistic. I think there was a strong desire for people to want to make the town the way it was before. But the reality is, if even half of the old residents returned, and the full population grew back with new residents and 99% of the buildings in town are rebuilt, there is NO WAY they can even start to get it the way it was before. And everyone there realizes that. And no one is really trying to make it the way it was before. Greensburg, with the people who are choosing to rebuild is an ongoing story of courage and struggle. Many people have chosen to fight their personal battles of courage and struggle in other places, and to not come back. Some older people moved strait

Absolutely awesome Dave - Original Message - From: Adam Hupe [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Adam meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com Sent: Wednesday, January 30, 2008 2:47 PM Subject: [meteorite-list] Images of NWA 5000 Complete Slice Dear List Members, I promised some images of the only complete slice taken from NWA 5000, The Cosmic Masterpiece. The surprise is that a hermetically-sealed display system was manufactured specifically for this slice and is a one-off. We would like to take this time to express our gratitude to Steven Domonkos Sr., Sr. Research Engineer, Department of Atmospheric Sciences, University of Washington who fabricated this fantastic display system. Not only does it act as a display, it also operates as a preservation chamber holding a vacuum, which can and will be charged with nitrogen. Although it may resemble something imagined from a Jules Verne book, it is a meticulously-created machine built to aerospace standards. The tolerances are incredible and the workmanship is exquisite. The frame was machined so precisely that it actually touches the slice at three points along the inside of the ring. The front and back are made from a bullet-resistant material that will not yellow over time. The synthetic o-rings are made of a material that will not degas, harden or decay. The valves and monitoring gauge are superb. Please ignore the base in the third image; it is a mock-up until a permanent one can be created. It is still a work-in-progress that has passed all pressure testing and will be ready in time for its inaugural public viewing at the 39th Lunar and Planetary Science Conference in Houston this March. Even though lunar material is among the most robust meteoritic material available, these extra steps were taken in order to ensure that future generations will be able to experience NWA 5000 the same way we have long after our team has passed on. We went as far as machining extra parts so that the future stewards of NWA 5000 can maintain its pristine condition for perhaps 1,000 years and then hopefully another system will be in place. The only drawback is that it is impossible to capture the beauty of this complete slice in an image. It has to be experienced first-hand in order to truly appreciate it. We will provide weight and measurement data on the slice once it has been officially recorded and submitted to Guinness for a world record. Several years ago, it wasn't unusual to get a classification (free) done in just a few months depending on who you knew at which school and what you relationship to them was. The Arizona universities were excited to see more Arizona material start showing up. But as time went by and meteorite hunting popularity increased, so did the amount of material submitted to labs for classification. I don't know if I'm right, but I suppose that the meteorite scientists might have lost their interest in the common stuff after seeing so much of it. Prior to that, there was very little material submitted for classification. Just my opinion, John At 12:17 PM 12/29/2007, Mark Crawford wrote: John/list, At the risk of sounding naive, why /wouldn't/ you pay for professional classification? Why not just add an extra buck/gramme to the sale price? I guess what I'm asking is, what's the non-financial reason for lodging with a non-fee-charging establishment? Do 'professional' labs only validate a limited range of types (eg - Bathurst don't do irons)? Do you have no say over where the type specimen gets lodged? I am a firm believer that State and National Museums should be free so anyone can study and enjoy science and art treasures without having to pay for it. This is the same premise behind the public library system. Last time I took my family to the Royal Ontario Museum we spent well over $100 entrance fees! In actual fact, NONE of these scientists wrote ANY of the report, and the report does not contain their scientific conclusions, evidence, etc. The scientist named as lead author on the title page, John Christie, has repeatedly repudiated the report and called it worthless. He's asked to have his name removed from it, but the UN has just as repeatedly refused to do it. The IPCC Report contains a section on the dire biological consequences of GW that contains such idiocies as the suggestion that GW will allow malaria to spread from the tropics north and south to areas now safe because mosquitoes are not found where temperatures fall below 18 deg. C. They should be staked out on the banks of the Yukon River in summer so non-existent carnivorous mosquitoes can devour them. The worst malaria epidemic in history took place in Russia in 1922. The city of Archangel on the ARTIC OCEAN had 30,000 cases and 11,000 deaths... Why didn't the UN consult an expert? Well, they did. They consulted the WHO's and the world's leading expert on malaria, Paul Reiter of the Pasteur Institute. I could give you paragraphs of his credentials, but this post is going to be too long as it is. Google him. OK? They put his name on this idiocy. He told them to take his name off. They said, no, you contributed. He said, no, because you didn't listen to anything I said. The UN refused to remove his name from their garbage. He sued the UN in Belgium. They took his name off. You'll have to ask the beaurocrats at the UN why they wrote what they did in the IPCC Report. If you ever get a straight answer, let me know. But, whatever the reason, it wasn't the science. I'm equally sure they had a reason. Wonder what it was? Next, we have the incorrectly titled An Inconvenient Truth. This title was chosen because it sounds so much better than the accurate one: A Convenient Lie. Highlights of the presentation are the display of the Hockey Stick graph of temperature rise, an artifact of faulty computer programming on the part of the modeler. The mathematical error that gave rise to it is acknowledged by every expert who's seen the code except, of course, by the man who screwed up. You can take his bad code and give it RANDOM temperature records and it will still produce a sudden sharp curve of warming... Garbage processor. The highlight of Mister Gore's presentation is the giant graph of world temperature and carbon dioxide levels which march up and down in lockstep, together, in a perfect fit, taken from the ice core data of 400,000 years. Man, that nails it! That's proof positive! Well, he does mention that there are some difficulties with the ice cores, but he never says what they are nor any word about them. The difficulty is this. The ice cores for 400,000 years show that the rise in CO2 FOLLOWS the rise in temperature by 800 to 1000 years. FIRST, the temperature goes up, THEN CO2 goes up... 800 years later. Does CO2 cause warming? NO. Warming causes CO2. The mechanism is easy to understand. CO2 solubility in water is very temperature dependent. Leave your soda sitting out on a warm day; it goes flat. When the planet warms, the ocean surface warms. Warm water cannot hold much CO2; it releases the CO2 that was dissolved in it when it was cold. The oceans turn over' in 800 to 1000 years; new CO2 laden water is continually brought to the surface and warmed, until all the dissolved CO2 is in the atmosphere -- on the same time scale as revealed in the ice cores. QED. This one piece of evidence ought to be enough all by itself to drive a fatal stake through the heart of the fundamental flaw of Warmism. Carbon dioxide, man-made or natural, does NOT drive climate change. But like Dracula in the horror movies of my childhood, Warmism comes back from the dead, time after time. It's not one set of cores, by the way, it's all the cores, from everywhere, Antarctica, Greenland, mountain glaciers in South America, decades of cores -- they all show the SAME thing. At any rate, a stage show run by a politician IS NOT EVIDENCE of anything, except that politicians will do or say ANYTHING

Re: [meteorite-list] Present the Worlds Largest Privately Owned Meteorite Sphere Collection
That is one beautiful collection. I created a quick display to hold 10 of them for an image for my web site From left to right NWA 2828 , GUANG DONG TEKTITE, DINOSAUR DONE, NWA 869 DRONINO, GAO, GIBEON CAMPO, SEYMCHAN BRAHIN Not Pictured, PETRIFIED WOOD http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p298/BobaDebt/Meteorites/Collection.jpg I think I had a really good year but I don't have very high expectations for next year, if I mange to add 3 more by next May I will be elated. I'm always looking for material to make into a sphere, so if you have some send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] If you would like to visit my web site click this: http://home.ec.rr.com/bobadebt/50mil.htm Thanks __ Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list __ Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
