[meteorite-list] another From the Admin - New List Features

2004-07-18 Thread ajones

Greetings once more;

I forgot to mention in my earlier email that the upgraded List software has
some nice new features, so be sure to go the List information page at:

http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

and then:

Login in the last field at the bottom of the page under the section titled
Meteorite-list Subscribers (you'll need to enter your password on the
next page). If you forgot your password there is also an option on the next
page to have it emailed to you.

On your settings page you'll see some new options including the language
you prefer, unsubscribing, address change, password change, temp. email
disabling, and other delivery options.

I hope these new additions will make use of the List much easier.

Best Regards,

 Art

[meteorite-list] From the Admin - Please Read

2004-07-17 Thread ajones

Good Evening Everyone;

Due to recent List processing changes, emails that contain suspicious
header information, attachments, and HTML will probably not make it through
the List filters.

I have implemented these changes in a pro-active effort against email virus
transmission through the List. Unfortunately this may affect some emails
that don't contain virus code, but that only look suspicious.

If you think you have good posts that are not going through (by good I
mean text-formatted and no attached files) please send me an off-list email
and I'll look into it.

Thank you!

[meteorite-list] From the Admin - List Upgrade

2004-04-22 Thread ajones

Good Afternoon Everyone;

As you all have probably noticed there have been some issues with List
performance over the past several months ranging from lost emails to lost
archives. Many of the problems were a result of the high amount of traffic
(both from List members and from spam) the List server experiences.

This morning the listserv software was upgraded and I'm hoping that this
will resolve some of these issues. If anyone notices anything strange with
your account please let me know off-list so I can investigate.

Hopefully the List will run a bit smoother now (at least from a technical
perspective!).

Re: [meteorite-list] Question about find in Ft.Walton Beach, FL

2004-04-15 Thread ajones

Hi Mark;

Very interesting question. I grew up in that area but moved out west around
the time in question. I do remember a local news story sometime in the
early 80's about a supposed daytime event in Ft. Walton Beach. I hadn't
become interested in meteorites yet so didn't really follow the story but I
recall reading a newspaper article about something that 'landed' on a local
road, creating a small hole or crater. I don't remember reading about
anything being recovered, and I'm not even sure the article mentioned this
being meteorite related. Since becoming interested in meteorites I've
attempted to find more information about this but have never had any luck.

Mark,
Since I live in Florida, I take special interest in any Fl. meteorites.
When bolide type sightings occur in the area, Elgin Air Force Base
(Fort Waldon Beach) is asked to report.
http://www.textfiles.com/ufo/UFOBBS/1000/1356.ufo
Thus, that area is often associated with sightings and ufo reports, but
I know of no meteorite found there.
In 1983 (and about 20 miles east ) an 11.3 kg H5 meteorite was found
at Grayton Beach.
Perhaps this is what your friend was referring.

Re: [meteorite-list] Heating tektites

2004-03-28 Thread ajones

Hi Rob and List;

I work in art glass as a hobby and experimented a few years ago with a
small green moldavite. I crushed it down to small bits (approx. 10mm dia.)
and then heated the lot to about 1000F and attached it to the outside of a
gather of molten glass. I then heated this mass to approx. 2400F for
several minutes. At this temperature the moldavite glass never seemed to
really melt (it remained as semi-hard bits on the molten mass). Upon
cooling, the moldavite glass reverted to the same color as it started,
although it did seem to have a slight metallic tinge usually associated
with glass that has been reduced (as in exposure to a low oxygen flame).

Hi All,

I have an unusual question for the group: what happens to a tektite
when you heat it up to its melting point and then let it cool back
down? Aside from any plastic changes in the shape, are there any
color effects? I wouldn't have thought so, but I've been told of
cases of heat-treating tektites to drastically alter their color,
and I wondered if it was a bunch of baloney. --Rob

Re: [meteorite-list] HTML Postings - from the Admin

2004-01-13 Thread ajones
Hi List;As a general policy, using HTML formatted emails is not desired on the meteorite list as these kinds of posts are usually larger and are the vehicle thru which many email-based virus programs can act. While I won't suspend an account for the occasional HTML posting (heck, I do it by mistake from time to time), I do keep an eye out for consistant HTML posts as they can cause problems. So, as a rule of thumb, set your email program to send text-based messages. Subject:[meteorite-list] Meteor Crater flyover + new fires in Arizona?

Hi All,

Been gone skiing in Aspen since Thanksgiving, but I see the list
was very quiet while I was away, so for once it didn't take
three hours of reading to catch up. Couple things to report:
while flying from Aspen to Phoenix, we flew just east of
Meteor Crater so I was able to get a few good aerial pictures --
at least I hope they turn out okay. Will post a link once I
get the film (yes film -- still no digital camera!) developed.

I was ready with my camera to shoot the crater only because
we had passed just east of it on our outgoing flight. There
was one difference flying back yesterday, however. Fires.
Many of them. At least 4 separate fires burning to the southwest
of the crater and east of Flagstaff. The smoke was blowing
toward Phoenix. Looked like it was west of where the bad
fires burned (last year?) in Show Low. Haven't heard anything
on the news about these latest fires, but I'll be doing a CNN
search next.

I have a bright, fragmenting fireball report to post in my
next message. Actually, I'm surprised no one from southern
California has reported it -- it occurred at 6:41pm PST on
Thanksgiving... --Rob

[meteorite-list] List Facts - From the Admin (not moderator)

2003-10-15 Thread ajones
Good Evening List members;

In light of all the interesting discussions taking place in this forum
lately I thought it would be a good time for me to give everyone an idea
how things currently work behind-the-scenes on the List:

1) The List is not moderated -- this means that if you are subscribed to
the List and make a post, it will immediately (or pretty quickly) be sent
to all subscribers who have their receive email option turned on (approx.
600 people at any given time).

2) Subscription to the List is moderated -- this means that all requests to
join the List are held for my approval.

3) The List is private -- this means that any posts sent to the List from
an email address that is not subscribed are held for my approval (approx.
250 a day)

4) The are a set of List policies --
http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing_list.shtml

5) The List is free (for subscribers) -- while subscribers are able to post
and receive List emails at no cost, there are costs associated with
hosting, bandwidth, and administration of the List that I currently I pay.

6) The List does not generate revenue (at least not for me) -- while I have
been approached with ways to make money from the List, I have chosen not
to go down that path.

7) The List IS what it IS -- with the current model, the state of the List
really depends on the people who use it. I don't have the time to
officially moderate the List (review and approve every post) in a way that
would be acceptable; allowing for the timely approval of postings. I also
don't have the time to assume a more active role as the List policeman.
There are many days that I can't even find the time to read any posts, much
less read every line of every post to make sure everyone is abiding by the
policies. What I can do is follow threads at a high level (I also often
receive private complaints and do look into them) and then take action if I
think it is appropriate.

8) List membership is optional -- if a subscriber finds the posts more
trouble than good, they can un-subscribe. Over the past several years I've
subscribed to many email lists dealing with many subjects, and the amount
of noise is always directly related to the amount of traffic (in the
information age that just seems to be the way it is). So I deal with the
good info. and the bad, and then if the noise gets too high I leave that
list before I allow it to affect my interest in the subject matter
involved. I would think most would take this approach.

I hope these points clear a few things up for new and old members as well.

Best Regards, Art (the Admin)

Greetings Everyone;

Here's a refresher on the List's policies:

General List Policies
1. Posts need to relate -in some way- to meteorites
2. Be courteous and professional at all times
3. Do not post -private messages- or -personal attacks- to the list
4. Please include the 'subject' of the post in the subject box
5. Send emails in text format, not -HTML-
6. Do not send emails with -file attachments- to the list - include a file
link
7. Make sure you can back up statements with -facts and references-
8. Do not post -major advertisement- emails to the list - include a 'sale'
link
9. If you are posting a URL for a sale, include 'SALE' in the subject box

Please keep your posts on-topic. This List gets a large amount of traffic

recent virus outbreak. By posting a single message as I did a few nights

that, chances are, you'll probably be exposed (so remember, watch out!).

When many members start posting 'virus' posts (believe me, I know that

If someone gets some really good valuable virus-related information, please
send me the email first and I'll post it to the List if I feel it is in

[meteorite-list] Admin Post: List Policy Enforcement Changes - FINAL

2002-06-08 Thread ajones

Good Evening List members;

After much thought and inner-struggle I've decided to REALLY crack down on the abuse of certain List policies - that WILL be enforced starting immediately.

While in the past I have been extremely patient and forgiving regarding posts that do not fall within the guidelines, these types of posts will, in the future, cause IMMEDIATE (as soon as I can initiate the process) suspension from the List. The standard suspension length will be indefinite. Suspension will be based on policy abuse alone, and personal feelings (whether mine or other member's) will not be taken into consideration.

There is really only one other way to handle the current problems and that is List moderation - a step I don't think anyone wants (especially me as it will require much more time on my part).

View the List Policies page: http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing_list.shtml for the latest policies.

I felt like I needed to post this one LAST statement/warning to be fair, as many individuals that stray from the rules from time to time, are in general - valuable members.

Hopefully everyone will understand and approve of my actions.

Note: there will be no posting of recently suspended members, nor emails to these specific members when they have been suspended (I just don't have the time for that). So, if you find you can not post to the List, take a good look at your recent posts and you'll no doubt see why this has happened. Feel free to email me with any concerns or questions.

P.S. To all who have emailed me personally, concerned with the List's direction, I do appreciate your input and I will be responding to your mails in the near future. I think this is a step in the right direction.

Regards, Art

Re: [meteorite-list] Listserve revision?

2002-04-13 Thread ajones

Greeting Everyone;

Initially, Meteorite Central had both a mailing list and a bulletin board (which is more towards what was described by Steve). The mailing list was used substantially more (powers of ten), and finally use of the bulletin board just about ceased so I discontinued it.

The best thing to do if you don't want to receive many mails is to switch to the digest version of the list. That way you will receive one mail containing all posts, once daily. To change your options to digest go to the following URL: http://www.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Under the Current Subscribers section enter your subscribed email address and click the Edit Options button. Then, on your options page, click the Set Digest Mode radio button to On.

Hope this helps!

[meteorite-list] Desert varnish

2002-04-05 Thread ajones

Greetings everyone!

I was recently doing a bit of research on desert varnish on boulders
meteorites and found this information regarding a possible organic origin:

['... desert varnish is formed by colonies of microscopis bacteria living
on the rock surface for thousands of years' (Ronald Dorn and Theodore
Oberlander - Science, Volume 213, 1981)]

I was curious as to whether this theory has wide-spread belief.

Also, is it believed that meteoritic desert varnish is caused by the same
process as terrestial rock desert varnish?

[meteorite-list] From the Admin - Virus Precautions

2002-02-12 Thread ajones

Greetings Everyone;

As a rule of thumb, never open any email attachments unless you are 100%
sure of what they are and have run a virus scan on them. Some of the latest
bugs can be run simply by having Outlook set to 'preview' mode or by
clicking a link embedded in an email. Beware! These days, good virus
scanning software with updated virus definition files is a 'must-have'
tool, especially if you are downloading files or receiving emails.

The file mentioned below is probably a *.pif virus (
http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_936.htm ) , which can be very nasty. Don't
open it!

Here is a link that has some good tips for avoiding getting and passing an
email virus: ( http://www.asitis.net.au/support/virustips.html ).

I am not foolish enough to open attachments sent by complete strangers, so
I don't know what these .pif files were. That they were sent from
fictitious e-mail accounts has me concerned. Two of these in as many days
is odd. Both coming with meteorite-related subject lines is very odd. I
suspect Trojan Horses. Can .pif attachments cause damage to a computer
when opened?

[meteorite-list] From The Admin - Please Read

2002-02-10 Thread ajones

Good Evening All;

I just arrived home from a wonderful few days at the Tucson show, where I
caught up with some old friends, met many new ones, and saw some incredible
meteorites! I've posted some preliminary pictures at
http://www.meteoritecentral.com/tucson_1.html . I hope you all enjoy them!

On a more serious note: I was surprised and disappointed to see some of the
recent list posts and have decided to take action in an attempt to get
things back on track. Beginning immediately, any List member that makes a
post which does not fall within the guidelines outlined on the List
Policies page ( http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing_list.shtml ) will
be placed on a 'moderated' status, meaning all subsequent posts by that
person will be screened prior to release. If the member's posts continue to
violate the policies they will be removed.(several members have already
been placed on moderated status).

As this does not affect 99% of those reading this email, I apologize for
taking up your time. At least look at the Tucson pics!

Best Regards, Art
