Greg, joe I have spoken to John valley and will be providing them all data and map for all 100 plus finds that I have collected and collated. I hope to finish tomorrow as well as scan the hand drawn map, which will be put on their site. This includes approx 20- 25 that I did not have - from Rob Matsons list but I do not have locations and pics for those. Please look through it when posted and add incomplete data if possible. This will be an ongoing project so please keep the data coming if you want to help. Thanks to all who provided the info. Can someone post the 2 kg pic on a site for me- joe?? -i have the pic. Would like to know who has that stone as it was not authenticated . Pls email me off list if you wish to remain on the sidelines, and your info will not be shared. In charge of this web site is Professor John Valley. I have already sent in the information for my two finds which included; Weight, Date of Find (I included time as well), GPS coordinates and Photos (if you can not send or take stones to John). Here is a snip of John's reply to me earlier today: We have three lists of meteorites. One contains references that we find on the web or hear about second hand. The more important list contains all confirmed finds of falls from April 14. We will put your samples on the confirmed list. We also show pictures on our web site, but this is just the subset of samples that we have examined and photographed ourselves I understand your reluctance to ship them to us. It would be very helpful to know the weights of your samples and the approx. (or exact) locations where you found them. This will help us to eventually define the distribution of the strewn field and the total mass of stones that were found. Thanks, John Valley Here is the link to the Registration Page: http://www.geology.wisc.edu/misc/meteorite-registry/ I would also encourage everyone who has not sent Richard Kowalski or Rob Matson this information to do so as well. The data that can be gleaned from this information will help these three parties with future meteorite recovery and other important science. Perhaps, someone on the List has another suggestion of a way to show our thanks and appreciation? It would be a sterling gesture and I'm sure our visit would be pleasantly remembered for years to our enduring benefit, unlike some infamous incidents where hunter/collectors have been told by the locals to pack up your stuff and never come back. I just now sent my more detailed and broader-scope stats to Eric, as I hope many others have as well. I'm sure we are all looking forward to his upcoming compilation results. A few members have mentioned their estimation that it took about 100 miles of walking to find each stone (at least for them). As I look over my numbers, I find that in THAT regard, I did a little better. I found my 1st stone after only about 3 hrs searching, and maybe 5 miles walking. Over all for my 2 stones, I averaged 16hrs of hunting, and ~ 30 miles walking for each one. BUT. I didn't do very well at all in total weight found, since my finds only weighed 3.2g and 11.8g, or 15g total. Hi all Just returned from WI- 3 more days of data. I had honored sonny clarys request to me to not release data or the prelim strewn field map last week monday with the understanding that his group would provide me with data of all their finds. As of this morning sonny has advised me that he or his group will not be providing any data to me for a few weeks. I have decided to make my compliation of data for approx 75 finds public. If you are in the area and need an area to search I pls email me off list with (WI strewn field map) and I will provide you with data- or call me- if you need an area now. Please do provide reasons you would need the data- search, research or dealer. If you have a confirmed find- with pics and weight- pls email it to off list- with WI data in the subject line. I am especially curious about the 2+ kg piece that has now disappeared. Did some dealer buy it and doesn't want anyone to know lest the price fall. I have a pic of the 2 kg if anyone wishes to see it. I also have a bearing on the 6 larger pieces that went thataway- in case anyone wishes to chase them down. I believe the best way to recover stones in this and all falls is the free unrestricted sharing of find and modelling data. I thank Rob matson for his help and support, and all others who helped. Re: [meteorite-list] JOE's find- wisconsin slices - a funny story
I was parked at a spot in the strewn field last Sun when joe and his kids drove up- Never met or heard of him before- Two meteorite enthusiasts meeting on the side of a road. We spoke and as I was hungry joe offered to make me a sandwich with what he had and I had some giant muffins to share , And a large campo to show them. Wonderful and sharing hospitality out of his back seat. I made up my mind- this was a good kid (I am much older). It was with a tinge of regret that I found out that the 330gram was found a few feet and a few hours later from where I was parked and waited for the gentelman with the 60 pound meteorite who wanted to verify it..with joe and kids. After 1.5 hrs of waiting he brings an iron ore slab. Yaargh. Left without a thank you for waiting etc. Anyway - the stone joe found is his and what he wants to do with it is his biz. I personally will support him. If someone wishes to keep the stone whole- please do consider buying it-but as a fragment of a probable 600 gm original piece- it lends itself to be sliced and maximize his gain. Go find some more joe- I can't think of anyone better to enrich themselves from a fall than you. But I really don't understand what you bring up, Greg. If it's your dream to find one, and you finally do, you don't cut it up and sell it three days later. The story reminds me of quite a few, to be honest: dealer chases down new fall/find, finds it, cuts it up, sells it. So, I agree - spectacular find, but...well, it *was* a pretty stone. Now it's a pile of slices waiting to be shipped. It was his dream to go and find a stone, and then to cut it up and sell it all to make a few thousand dollars? If I owned a slice (and I'm not planning on buying one), I wouldn't look down at it thinking this is a piece of the realization of one's man dream, because all it got him in the end was $60/g. I don't know about you, but I consider my dreams to be worth more than that, and it would cost a hell of a lot more for you to get me to sell them. You're treating it like it's a business. Calling it something else seems strange -- and calling it priceless...all this sentimental talk from someone who just sliced up a beautiful stone strikes me as a little funny. I'll take it quietly while a dealer dices with no pretext [to make money], but thisthis annoys me significantly more. Is it really the dream of most people out there to simply find a new fall for the cash in it? Are meteorite enthusiasts on the whole really coming to that? I feel as though this message might give the wrong impression - I can't begin to convey how happy I am for Joe and his truly spectacular find, but what I'm seeing is the exact opposite of what I would expect from someone who just found the meteorite of his or her dreams...and it's beyond disappointing to me if this is really what meteorite hunters hope to do with their 'dream finds...' [meteorite-list] Orissa India--- Of Floods, meteorites and Man-and Turtles too
Dear All- and Mike Farmer While poor people of the area have just had their thached (straw) roofs blow off their Mud houses ,and their mud houses are turning into more mud,and people are dying and even more will die from the diseases to come,we get to hear about the carnage ,and learn about their misery sitting at our computers. Into this mayhem that is India arrives one Foreigner(as they are called) in 2 cars/jeeps with a purpose. He wants the rocks that fell from the sky. Mike travels exactly half way around the world for meteorites, and ends up with a flood, starvation, and disease. Not to mention he is among people who have never seen a refrigerator- and would not know what to do with it even if they did see one. They have neverknown electricity- unless they travel to town. Maybe he can do something to help the poor people there, even if they dont have METEORITES TO BARTER FOR FOOD. COWS- They are a part of the household- almost a member of the family- like a pet dog is- sort of- They wander during the day looking for foliage, and in the evening come back home - to be milked. The reason they are on the road in Mikes way is because they are lost- or decide they dont want to sit in the flooded area today. They are trying to stay dry, or maybe their way home is blocked by water. Milk is the major source of protien and fat for most of India. The milk extracted is usually gone fast -They dont need refrigerators- there are more mouths in the household than the cow can fill. ROADS Mikes description of the road travel left out this- As the only decent part of the road is the middle every vehicle travels in the middle of the road. There is nothing dividing oncoming traffic from your vehicle. When you see a vehicle coming- you have to make a quick decision whether you want to get off the road or if you want to get him off the road or if you want to see if he wants to play the who,s going to get off last game. The larger (read TATA) usually wins the middle ground. I musttell youabout the TATA tramplers - (These are 7 ton trucks loaded with 20 -30 tons of freight- i call them Tramplers) hopelessly overloaded ,usually leaning to one side, engines over-revving under the load, and they do trample everthing in their path. Travelling in rural Indiacan be great fun.I go as often as i can, doing volunteer Wildlife work while i am there. INDIAN HOSPITALITY If there is one bed in the home- the guest sleeps in it- the rest on the floor. If there is one meal- for the whole family to share- the guest gets it. It is very very humbling to learn that there is so much we can learn from these poor people. The tone of mikes email seems to suggest he has finally found what enthalls people of the world with India. There is so much to love - and so much to dislike. It is a land of paradoxes. His emails exude a sense of resigned acceptance about the things he is seeing.makes me homesick just reading his emails. Anyway my contact reports that Recovery efforts have been dismal. The water is everywhere as the mini cyclone from last week brought the ocean to the peoples doorstep in more ways than one. MIKE- Ask about when the Arribida is- Millions of Indian Sea Going turtles come to the very beaches you are near to lay their eggs and then even more millions hatch and go back to the sea to continue the cycle that has continued from times immemorial .It is a sight of a lifetime. The turtles that hatch here- will only come back to the very beach they were born - in a few years to lay their eggs.Radio telemetry has established this recently. And it took us 2000 AD yrs to discover GPS.The turtles have us beat by a few million years. PS- the word Arrabida wascoined by the spanish inhabitants of India-I think it means the arrival. Regards Atul kumar
[meteorite-list] Orissa INDIA- Report recd from the strewn field
Current conditions at the strewn field areand have been Wet wet and WET. There was a mini cyclone last week, and it has been raining ever since. There is knee deep water in most places and inthe fields. This place is 30 KM from town in arural coastal village.Thepeople i am in touch with have been waiting for the rains to subside for a number of days now. Recovery of too much material will probably be quite difficult. The strewn field also seems to be much smaller than initial reports. I am told Mike Farmerarrived in the area today in two vehicles. He would be a much more reliable personfor specifics on this fall and the stones. All stones (that they could find) have been collected/confiscated by the District Collector and there is an active power struggle going on between two Goverment agencies as to who should get the two larger (eggplant size) pcs and smaller onesrecovered . So they are sitting in the District Revenue Collector,s office where they can be viewed- thru a window . A government helicopter is also flying over the area twice a day Not sure why- perhaps looking for larger pcs. Its all flooded anyway. Initial reports describe this as dark brown(may be the light) and VERY magnetic. That ties in well with themetal viens news report . Would appreciate some input as to what kind of meteoritewould this probably be. Or they may just have some magnetic stones completely unconnected to the fall. Stones have been very hard to come by,but it is possible Mike Farmer may have better luck than we did. I will have some more reports coming in later on today.I am anxious to see some pics myself. Regards Atul Kumar
[meteorite-list] Indian Meteorite- anyone going-Travel WARNING for the area.
I have heard that a few people are planning to travel to India for this fall, I would like to help them with planning out a safe trip. My people in India tell me this area is in rather bad shape as far as lawlessness is concerned. I have just also been fwd,d a news item- the Chief Minister (equivalent of a State Governer in the US) of the area just got blown up along with many of his ministers approx 2 hrs ago. He is still alive. So please do contact me if you are planning to head out there- i can give you some tips.1. Do not travel alone- take a few big and beefy fellows with you. 2.Do not travel at night- thats when the rebels rule the countryside I also have a few people from my India office headingto the fall location- and if they are able to find anything fast and safely they stay thereand i will get back to everyone who emailed me in approx 2-3 days. This is planned as a recovery effort, and it can be done co-operatively- rather than a repeat of the circus i saw at Park Forest. Atul Kumar Collector - not Dealer 219-308-8282

[meteorite-list] Geological team finds parts of meteorite-INDIA
http://www.newindpress.com/Newsitems.asp?ID=IEQ20030929145648Page=QTitle=ORISSArLink=0 Geological team finds parts of meteorite BHUBANESWAR: A two-member team from the Geological Survey of India (GSI) has located what could be called `parts' of the meteor in Kaptipada block of Mayurbhanj. The remnants, according to Director, GSI B.K. Mohanty, resemble slags and are dark in colour. However, these fragments are small in size and also light in weight. He said these parts of the meteor were retrieved from around the gutted hut in Kaptipada. These fragments were probably responsible for the fire in the thatched house, he said. However, there could still be a bigger remnant of the meteor from which the smaller ones emanated, Mohanty said adding, the team was looking for it. The main portion could be lying buried somewhere. Since a meteor travels at a tremendous speed after entering the Earth's atmosphere, any bigger remnant would pierce into the latter's surface. However, the team has now been instructed to visit Balasore and Bhadrak to find if any remnant has landed there. The team would return to Bhubaneswar on Tuesday with the fragments. On Monday, a second GSI team was sent to Mahakalpara block under Kendrapara district where a 6 kg stone-like object was found by villagers in Suniti.
