i'm going to be there; proudly getting way too into rainer maria and
atom and his package and spending way too much money on
music. maybe i'll put a picture up on my webpage before i go so
people can come and find me and say 'hey, i've been to your
webpage!' and scare me half to death. or, maybe not...

i'm currently addicted to 'the old master painter' and 'i just wasn't
made for these times' by the beach boys. a friend of mine gave me
his copy of "pet sounds" as an early birthday gift, and i downloaded
"smile" and burned it to cd recently. i still believe that the early
beach boys stuff was horrible, but those two albums are worth the
credit that they get. an example of this is brian wilson's adaptation
of 'you are my sunshine', which is part of 'the old master painter':

you were my sunshine, my only sunshine.
you made me happy when skies were blue.
you'll never know, dear, how much i loved you.
how could you take my sunshine away?

not exactly happy, but it fits the mood that i've been in recently...

as for everyone that brought up pinback recently, what i've heard by
them is great. i think i like rob crow's solo acoustic stuff more
though. and some of the heavy vegetable stuff is better, too...
which reminds me: check out mp3it.com. it's a legit site that
features stuff by all of rob crow's various projects (get the
unreleased cassette box set. now.) and various other bands that
can be related to him in some way or another. you won't be sorry.

2000-03-09 Thread WedrenStar

the whole notion of "selling out," if it exists at all, is when a band
becomes irrelevant to what they may have previously stood upon as their
motivation, ideals, etc. . .generally, a loss of integrity in exchange for
the sales, whatever. don't care.
now, as far as no doubt is concerned, i would question their integrity. when
tragic kingdom first came out, they spoke at some length in various
interviews as to how they had been attributed to the OC ska scene, but were
glad to have rid themselves of the label as they didn't really like the
label, and never really liked being labeled a ska band. then, as ska became
that year's equivalent of this year's limp-bizkit-shit-fad, they suddenly
spoke at length about how they had always been integral to the OC ska scene,
and they started playing themselves up as hometown ska heroes. i mean, none
of it really matters, because they're uninteresting musicians making
uninteresting music for the uninterested masses. but i'd hardly say that
they've ever branched out into less-commercially viable music.

and as far as someone else saying that rage isn't innovative, i think at this
point it might be easy to sort of throw them in with bands like korn, limp
bizkit, et al, who have tried to replicate and/or use their sound as a
starting off point. but no one else was doing what they were doing back in
1993, or now, really, if you think about it. i'm not a huge rage fan, and
some of their actions may run contradictory to their outspoken views (though
not hypocritical, necessarily, as some have alleged), but i would say that
they're a fairly innovative band, and a passionate one, nonetheless. it's
not their fault that 93.8% of the people that like them have no idea what de
la rocha and company are ragin' against and only like it 'cos it's heavy and
it gives them an excuse to beat up people in the pit. but i wouldn't
discredit them even in light of the fact that they're largely responsible for
a good amount of absolute shite on the radio (mysognist homophobes who got it
all wrong. . .sigh)

oh, but i certainly wouldn't say that they've branched off into "musical
directions against the grain," though. it was a bit of an anomaly that all
of the forces came together (support, a waiting audience, etc) to make their
first album so successful, and their sound has progressed some over the next
two, but, to quote everyone's favorite rockers-in-excess, "the song remains
the same." or enough so, anyway.

That would be "Pink Moon" by Nick Drake, and I highly
recommend anything you can find by him. There's an
album called Way To Blue, An Introduction to Nick
Drake. There were 3 albums, I believe, and a box set
that included a fourth disc of rarities. A beautiful
voice, sensational songwriter. Voice sounds like
Donovan or (*ahem*) Stuart from Belle & Sebastian.
Honestly, if you first heard B&S and wondered how they
came up with that mellow and folky yet orchestrated
sound, they stole it all from him. But that's ok.

For whoever was wondering about how songs are picked
for commercials, there was an article in CMJ New Music
Monthly about it a few months back. Generally, when
ad agencies are trying to create a commercial for a
company, they suggest what elements that they think
would help to target a commercial to a particular
demographic. And music is an important part of any
commercial as it can either draw you in or turn you
off immediately. I don't know why it seems to have
snowballed recently, but independent or lesser-known
artists are certainly getting more attention through
commercials. It's an easy way for a band to make a
few thousand as well, since all they're gaining is
free advertising from it. I think it's interesting to
note how this process can work backwards, as a band
without any notoriety at all can gain some attention
from an ad... for example, that commercial (also VW?)
where two people are driving very slow down a street,
and everything happening around them is syncing up
with the music... the artist is Master Cylinder, and I
must've been asked that a hundred times at the record
store before I finally found out for myself.

I got something to say,

I need your input again... this time I'm wondering about a
particular song:

In the new Volkswagen Cabrio commercial, where twenty-
somethings are driving around under the moon and stars at
night, who sings the song used in the ad?

It sounds real folky, with a male vocalist and acoustic
guitar. Ordinarily, I wouldn't even ask, but since VW is notorious
for using songs from real musicians and the song sounds
so good, I need to know. Any help greatly appreciated.

And thanks for the Pinback suggestions earlier. It really
