Re: [MonoTouch] Wrong IP Address

Hi Greg,

I just blogged about how to override the settings used by the device used to
connect to the debugger on your local machine in current versions of
MonoTouch:

http://jeffreystedfast.blogspot.com/2011/08/debugging-your-monotouch-apps-future.html

I also wrote a bit about our future (likely with 4.1) plans where apps will
be debuggable via the USB connection which will solve this horrible WiFi
debugging experience.

Hope this helps if you haven't found an alternative solution in the
meantime,

Jeff

Greg,

You can fix this today:

http://ios.xamarin.com/Documentation/Troubleshoot#Debugger_is_unable_to_connect_with_the_device

Follow the steps in the:

MonoDevelop may picked the wrong host IP address. section. Be sure to fully
quit MonoDevelop before editing the properties file otherwise it will clobber
your changes.

We could probably do this... although another good way is to watch
http://go-mono.org/monologue which is an aggregate of all the core Mono*
developer blogs (+ a number of the more active contributors, etc).

The other people *currently* working on MonoTouch (and related technologies)
are:

* Miguel de Icaza (fearless CTO and master of the iOS5 API), but I'm sure
you already know his blog twitter accounts!

* Chris Toshok (kind of the lead on the project now that Geoff has moved on
to other exciting projects at another company). I don't think Chris has a
blog anymore, but his twitter stream is https://twitter.com/#!/toshok

* Rodrigo Kumpera (master of all things in the core Mono runtime). You can

* Sebastien Pouliot (master of Crypto and Linker fu). You can find his
twitter stream at https://twitter.com/#!/spouliot and his blog is at

* Rolf Kvinge (mostly working on the MonoDevelop side of things). He rarely
tweets, but you can follow him at https://twitter.com/#!/rolfkvinge and his
blog is at http://rolfkvinge.blogspot.com/ (he's a quiet guy)

* Chris Hardy (documentation guru). You can find his twitter stream at

I think that's everyone...

Greg,

I recall having the same issue and tried all the things you've listed as well,
It was something to do with parallels. If Parallels isn't already, switch it to
shared networking.

Regards,

Right I have found the source of the IP Address it is showing as VNIC01 but
 I
cannot find how to make monodevelop not use this and only use my real ip
 address.

I have added the HostIP Property to both of the monodevelopproperties files
(one in the ~/config/monodevelop folder and ~/config/monodevelop-2.6 folder
but it still does not get picked up by monodevelop.

Is there anyway to force Monodevelop to use a specific address at the
 moment
or is this a bug. Otherwise how can I get it to pick up the right adapter
and not try to use the virtual one?

I believe that the virtual one would have been installed by parallels.

Hi Greg,

It pains me to watch you suffer through this but unfortunately I do not know
how to work around this with the current releases of MonoDevelop and
MonoTouch.

Fortunately, MonoTouch 4.1 will allow manual overrides of the IP address for
the debugger to connect to by adding IP addresses (yes, plural) to try in
a MonoTouchDebugConfiguration.txt file which will get bundled with the debug
version of the app.

I believe the plan is also to add a UI to MonoDevelop to specify this list
of IPs for the device to try and connect to (at least, I hope that's our
plan...).

I know that a future release does nothing to solve your problem right now,
but I hope it will at least be comforting to know that this issue is on our
radar and is a top priority.

Maybe useless but in the beginning I had problems with IP where MonoDevelop
tried to connect to invalid IP.

Since I followed the tip to change xml file configuration on Mac and since I
reserved the MacBook IP address and iPad address on the wifi router, then I
nevermore had troubles. Just folowing the fixed tip on XML configuration
file din't helped because the router sometimes change IPs and with fixed
rerved IPs all became OK.

Just dont know how or where the debugger is getting this address.

Did you recompile and redeploy the app after each change
of the network settings? The IP is burnt in the app at compile time.

Have you got virtual network adaptors on your MBP? e.g. VirtualBox or
similar?

Nope nothing like this at all, just the OSX (Lion) and the wifi and the
iphone.

Which makes this annoying.

Thanks for your help

Re: [MonoTouch] Wrong IP Address

2011-07-29 Thread Greg
Thats strange as I had my phone connected to my laptop via usb, it was
connected to the network (the right one) the same as my laptop (though one
was connected via wifi and the other ethernet) but still getting different
IP's

It would be better if I could specify this in Monodevelop somewhere.

At the moment still no joy, but I am not one to give in.

Cheers

Greg, I've had exactly the same behaviour you describe. I rebooted the MBP
and restarted MD, it then picked the correct IP to listen on.

Try switching AirPort on/off?

Re: [MonoTouch] Wrong IP Address

2011-07-29 Thread Greg
I have tried everything now. I have rebooted all devices and I am now
restricting all devices to 1 wifi network and nothing else and still I
cannot get the right IP address only the device address which is wrong.

You are all right that the 10.211 address is that of my IPhone in this case,
but I need this to be a 192.168 address (that of my macbook) but I cannot
seem to get this to happen, i have tried with and without wifi active.

Ironically this did work once yesterday but I cannot remember if this was
before or after updating to 2.6 Beta 3?

Cheers for helping.

Greg

to clarify, what is

a. the IP of your iOS device?
b. the IP of your MBP ( over which connection)?
c. the IP the debugger is trying to connect to?
