[MOPO] RIP Peter Falk.
Most know of him as Columbo, but he was at his finest in The In-Laws (opposite the equally great Alan Arkin). He was one of those guys like Walter Matthau who was always better than what he appeared in, but it took a super long time for him to become a star. *http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118039074* I wonder if any of his films had Mexican lobby cards? very sad. he did an excellent comic turn in the underrated Robin The Seven Hoods and had a long, rich association with Cassavetes. but if you're going to mark his passing, I suggest one of the early Columbos that had Jack Cassidy as the guest star. Murder by the Book was one of the best TV shows I ever saw! Of course I learned years later it was directed by Spielberg, and I thought THAT accounted for why it was so great, but it wasn't for many more years that I learned it was written by a young Steven Bochco, surely one of the absolute best TV writers ever. He's also superb in 'Wings of Desire' where he plays himself. I have the Blu-Ray here so it looks like I'll finally be playing it this weekend. Re: [MOPO] RIP Peter Falk.
My only Peter Falk story was a sighting. Back in the day, when I was regularly attending the Academy Awards ceremonies, I had pretty regular routine. I’d always do drinks at the Polo Lounge the Sunday night before the awards…I’d always do dinner at the Bistro Gardens after the awards (because Swifty Lazar had his after-party there, in a room upstairs…I’d always have drinks at Tribeca at some point, and follow it with dinner at the Ginger Man on the same night. Anyway, to the point, as you all probably know Carroll O’Connor was an owner of the Ginger Man and was often there. On more than one occasion I’d go in for dinner and he would be at a table with Peter Falk and Peter would invariably have a young, long, tall, buxom blonde on his arm. It made me smile every time I saw that wonderful little man with a women have his age and twice his height. Re: [MOPO] RIP Peter Falk.
Yes, Neil, you picked the best!! The combo of Falk and Jack Cassidy, one of the most underrated performers in sho-biz history, was dynamite! Luckily for me, I saw Peter Falk starring with Lee Grant and Vincent Gardenia in Neil Simon's hysterical The Prisoner of 2nd Avenue. And I saw Jack Cassidy in She Loves Me.
