Re: [MOPO] Poster grading

2014-03-12 Thread Richard Halegua Posters + Comic Art

At 05:37 PM 3/11/2014,
I have fewer than one in 1,000 posters returned for condition, so I
feel my grading system is working fine, so I see no reason to change mine.

my grading system must be working better.

the last item that I had returned due to a grading mistake was a
Godfather lobby card I sold on 5/12/2012

http://old.movieposterbid.com/itemdetl.asp?id=91764
you can't currently see the description data as we import the old
database to the new, but it was incorrectly graded as C-9 and I did
not notice a light semi crease in the black area which can't even be
seen in the photo.

I happily accepted a return and paid shipping back of course and
listed it again, properly graded to C-7 and sold it on 7/4/2012

http://old.movieposterbid.com/itemdetl.asp?id=93548

that was the last item that I had returned due to any grading issue
and one of only a small handful since I began running my auctions in 2006.
since that lobby card was returned, I have sold over 20,000
individual listings through my auctions

probably the lowest return rate of any auction or any set sale listing anywhere

2014-03-12 Thread Helmut Hamm
This is not noir, but apparently, GHETTO FREAKS was originally released as
'Love Commune' and while I have never seen a poster that shows the original
title, I just listed a nice onesheet for re-titled version on my website:

http://www.filmposter.net/movieposters/poster/movie/original/ghetto-freaks/

absolutely, Dave, and DEADLY IS THE FEMALE is an interesting
example---because that is a case where it wasn't just the title that was
changed, but the entire artwork campaign and the poster designs, all of which
 were radically changed as well.

Channing: it has happened before in movie poster history, sometimes like with
HOT BLOOD becoming THE WILD ONE, and the posters being redone, so that we are
not just talking about a title change. SUSPICION (with a few lobby cards
initially created titled AFTER THE FACT) is another example, as is THE WOMAN
ON PIER 13 (at first under the title I MARRIED A COMMUNIST).

It looks like Allied Artists printed a number of posters up before it was
decided to re-title the movie as Murder Is My Beat. Sounds more menacing.
Arent there other examples, especially of noir films, that did this kind of
title change, even tho posters had already been produced?

It's a great looking insert, regardless.

I have an insert poster for a film with Barbara Payton called Danger is my
Beat (Allied Artists 1955). I've been trying to get information on it but
the only reference is what is obviously the same film but with the title
Murder is My Beat. I can't find any reference to the film being released as
 Danger is my Beat.

Does anyone here on MOPO know the story behind this mystery of this poster
 with the unknown name?

 Thanks, Channing Thomson

Re: [MOPO] Poster grading

2014-03-12 Thread Helmut Hamm
I'm not an auction house, so I don't sell posters by the thousands, but I
hardly get ANY returns whatsoever, so I guess I must be doing SOMETHING right.

I don't see any need for a 'uniform' grading system, and as long as a potential
buyer is able to make an EDUCATED GUESS about the condition, I can't see that
it makes any difference if an item is labeled 'fair' or 'good' or 'C4' or
whatever.

My images are usually not that great, but if there are any defects not easily
seen on the photo, I try to point them out in the description. Take this SEVEN
YEAR ITCH title card that I just listed:

http://www.filmposter.net/movieposters/poster/movie/original/the-seven-year-itch-6/search/1/pno/0/

The creases and light discoloration are quite easily seen on the image, the
MINIMAL trim of the top border? You would have to look really sharp to notice
that, so I made a note for it in my description. I graded the card Very Good,
somebody else might call it 'Good' and yet somebody else might probably label
it 'Fine-', but does that really make a difference? I don't think so.

Just my two cents.

Re: [MOPO] Poster grading

2014-03-12 Thread Bruce Hershenson
I agree. I see this as trying to solve a problem that doesn't exist (the
need for uniform grading). People who mis-grade items (either intentionally
or unintentionally) will surely still do so even with that uniform grading
code, simply by missing defects, or by using deceptive images. Word gets
out on who you can trust and who is unreliable, so it is surely wise to
ask around before you buy. With Google, you can search for Helmut Hamm
movie posters (or any other name) and you will quickly find if others have
had problems (in Helmut's case, I see only very positive links!). The same
goes even more for restorers of movie posters. Ask around and search
Google, before you buy and you will greatly reduce the number of unpleasant
surprises.

[MOPO] We have been consigned an amazing set of twenty five 11x14 color-glos stills that MGM issued in 1940

2014-03-12 Thread Bruce Hershenson
Color-glos stills used a special kind of color printing that the studios
experimented with in the late 1930s and 1940s. It has a different effect
than regular color printing, and color-glos stills were made in both an
8x10 and 11x14 format, primarily only for major releases (including The
Wizard of Oz, Gone With the Wind, and Citizen Kane!). They are far more
rare than regular color or black white stills or lobby cards for the same
titles!

We have been consigned an amazing set of twenty five 11x14 color-glos
stills that MGM issued in 1940, each with a different portrait of an MGM
star, taken by a top MGM photographer. Over the past 25 years I have seen a
very tiny number of these (fewer than five) and until now I did not know
there were 25 different ones.

They are in remarkable condition, and will be auctioned individually in our
April Major Auction!

[MOPO] I have done nothing but auction 912,000+ movie posters for the past 24 years!

2014-03-12 Thread Bruce Hershenson
When you consign your posters to an auction company (or when you send them
your money for a purchase) you want to know that they are a substantial
company you can trust. I have done nothing but auction 912,000+ movie
posters for the past 24 years, and eMoviePoster.com occupies this entire
downtown West Plains Missouri block (and I personally own it!). Whenever
you are ready to consign some posters, we will be here!

I think what they mean to say is that this piece is a Good/Very Good example of
a poster in Poor Condition.
