It was interesting to see the comments about the grading in the
auction listing. Apparently the two best examples of this comic were
graded 9.0 but the owner of the one that just sold says that his
comic is far superior in condition to the one that previously sold
for 2.1mill. Does that indicate that the grading system and slabbing
might not be as reliable as it should be?

"This particular copy is the nicest that has ever been graded, with
an ASTONISHING grade of CGC 9.0 ! To date, no copies have been
graded higher and only one other copy has received the same grade.
It is fair to say though that this copy blows the other 9.0 out of
the water. Compared to the other 9.0 that sold for $2.1million
several years ago it has significant superior eye appeal, extremely
vibrant colors and PERFECT WHITE PAGES."

Though the final price was about 3.2 million. 13 pre-approved bidders placed
individual bids (from lowest to highest) in excess of 1.5 million dollars for
an item of which there may be 100 more.

[MOPO] would you buy it?

2014-08-25 Thread Walton, Jeffrey
So an auction company not far from me, offered this poster.

Creature of the Black
Lagoon

I went to look at it to see how bad it was and to see if it could be restored
at all. Now I'm no expert on restoration but after I Iooked at it, I wouldn't
touch it for even the reserve ($2,500). First is was indeed glued to a poster
board but on closer inspection it was painted on top of the board in many
places, including the top left hand portion of the poster. The hammer price
was $7,200 including the 20% auction premium.

Now I have no idea if the buyers were actual movie poster people or now but for
the sake of argument let's say they are notthen wouldn't they think they
have gotten a great price base on the estimated value of the lot which was btw
10k and 20k? I would say the estimate was very deceptive based on the real
condition of this poster.

BTW I think we are in the wrong paper businessa coca-cola book mark sold
for $10,200 (including 20%).

[MOPO] REVENGE OF FRANKENSTEIN (1958)

2014-08-25 Thread walter reuben
Hello
I was recently offered a British quad poster for this Hammer film.
When I tried to look up past auction results, I was surprised to see that
neither Bruce nor Grey has apparently ever listed a copy of this. How can
that be?
I went to Bonhams and was unable to find a listing for this poster. It is
certainly possible that Christies South Kensington may have auctioned this
in the past, but, as far as I can tell, their website is a total mess now.
It used to be easy to search past results there, but, now, the results page
is for this year only, and you are forced to do a different search, over
and over again, for every year in the past, yikes!
Anyway, is there any Mopo member who actually can direct me to past results
on this poster? Am I correct in assuming that it is a scarce one?

[MOPO] The deadline for consigning to our September Mini/Major Auction has passed & NOW is the time to consign for Halloween (and start thinking hard about December!)

2014-08-25 Thread Bruce Hershenson
*The deadline for consigning to our September Mini/Major Auction has passed
& NOW is the time to consign for Halloween (and start thinking hard about
December!)*

This September Mini/Major Auction is limited to solely linenbacked and
paperbacked items. The auction will be held in three parts, with the first
part running from September 7th to 14th, the second part running September
9th to 16th, and the third part running from September 11th to 18th. The
deadline is now passed, but
August 11th was the last day to consign to our September Mini/Major
Auction, so* CONSIGNING TO THIS AUCTION IS NOW CLOSED! *If you missed it
(or if you have quality non-backed posters), then you can now instead
consign to our December Major Auction (unless your items are
horror/sci-fi/fantasy items, in which case they can go in our 15th Annual
Halloween Auction; see below).
--

* We are starting to get many Halloween-related consignments sent to us; BE
SURE TO LABEL YOUR SHIPMENT!

*

* Now is the time to start sending items for our 15th Annual Halloween
Auction! BUT IT IS REALLY IMPORTANT THAT YOU TELL US IF YOU ARE SENDING
ITEMS SPECIFICALLY FOR HALLOWEEN!* If you don't label them, then we will
likely put them in our regular auctions. Also, we get lots of duplicated
submissions for this auction, so that is all the *MORE* reason to start
sending early! There are some excellent horror/sci-fi posters and lobby
cards that we seem to get every year, and if you have one or more of those,
then you want to send them *NOW*, so that *YOURS* is the one included, and
not someone else's. We just had a wonderful selection of
horror/sci-fi/fantasy in our July Major Auction (and many sold for
excellent prices), and even though we have just started taking consignments
for this Halloween auction we already have quite a few top items! So if you
have any to consign, then send right away, so that your items are much more
likely to be included. And we almost always get much stronger prices for
horror/sci-fi/fantasy items in this special auction than we do in our
regular auctions.

Be sure to e-mail * Phillip
*
right away at *phil...@emovieposter.com
* to
let us know what you plan to send for this 15th Annual Halloween Auction,
and we will quickly let you know if they are right for this special auction.
--

*It is not too soon to consign to our December Major Auction! **Now that
the deadline for the September Mini/Major Auction has passed, know that it
is fine to consign to our December Major Auction.* With the clear success
of our July 2014 Major Auction, it is clear that we have lots and lots of
top buyers, and they want to buy any sort of quality item (at least from
us!). Unlike the September Mini/Major Auction, which only includes
linenbacked and paperbacked posters, this auction will (like our July Major
Auction) *ALSO* include unbacked posters, lobby cards, stills, and any
other really cool and rare items we get consigned for it (but the kind of
items that truly rarely ever are offered for sale or auction).

*IMPORTANT! More than ever, *I am going to continue making a really major
effort to keep lesser posters out of the December Major Auction. Why?
Because out of the 1,600+ items, there were around 100 items in the July
Major Auction that sold for under $20 (and around 200 under $30, and around
400 under $50), and I absolutely believe that those items would have almost
surely done *BETTER* in the regular weekly auctions, because there, they
would have been between the "middle of the pack", and the top items, so
many more people would have seen them, because so many people only sort
high to low and look at the top few pages of items.

But in the major auction, they fell at the very end, and they got far fewer
views, and I believe that caused them to go for less (and of course, some
people are going after expensive items, and skip the less expensive ones
because they have to decide how to spend the money). This is especially
true for the kinds of items that show up regularly at auction. People know
that they can "let this one go by", because there will be another one
before long, and instead they focus on the kinds of items that rarely come
up for sale or auction.

So I am asking all of you to bear this in mind when sending items for the
December Major Auction. Of course, you can send items and leave it to *ME*
as to whether they should be in the major auction or in the regular
auctions (because my goal is the same as yours, which is to maximize how
much the items sell for!). It is not a question of strictly price, but also
of rarity and desirability. When I put an item that we have all the time in
the major auction, I t
