The Red Crossbills in Morris were refound this morning at the corner of College Ave and East 7th St across the street from the cemetery. On my way home I decided to do a bit of searching in Pope County as well. At 1:45 I found 4 Red Crossbills on CR15 0.4 miles north of CR24. This is just west of Glenwood. [mou-net] Glaucous Gull still in Thief River Falls
Around 10:30 this morning I was driving past the beach area in Thief River Falls where Jeannie Joppru reported a Glaucous Gull last Saturday. [mou-net] Bell's Vireo - Waseca; Loggerhead Shrike - Dodge and Mower
A long, winding walk on the trails at Blowers Park in Waseca County did not result in the Willow Flycatcher I was looking for. However I discovered a Bell's Vireo and also discovered that you could nearly drive right up to it instead of walking the 1/2 mile that I did. Take CR4 northeast from the town of Waseca. Blower's Park will be on your right in 2 miles or so. However do not turn into the park. Continue past it for 1/4 mile and watch for the little blue sign with fire # 16256. Turn right onto the dirt road and follow it for 0.2 miles. (Prius owners use caution!) Watch for a mowed area on your right that has a County Park sign that has been shot up and also a Ducks Unlimited sign. Follow the trail that starts there towards the bluebird house on the right side of the trail. You should hear the Bell's Vireo on your left before you get to the bluebird house. It was in the cedar/alder mix, which seemed like an unlikely place for it to be, but that is positively what it was. Also the Loggerhead Shrike that Peter Mattson reported on the Dodge/Mower county line on June 9 was still present. Obligingly, it flew from the wires on the Dodge side of the road to the road edge on the Mower side for me. This is about 3/4 mile east of Mower CR7 (which is also Dodge CR13). [mou-net] Black-backed Woodpeckers in Roseau County
Ron Erpelding and I just returned from a three-day trip to northwest Minnesota. While visiting Hayes Lake State Park in Roseau County, we talked to a park ranger who mentioned that there had been a fire nearby a few months ago. When we visited the area, we were delighted to find at least 3 and probably 4 Black-backed Woodpeckers there. The exact location is along the Thompson Forest Rd about 6 or 7 miles northeast of the Hayes Lake State Park entrance (where CR4 ends). We were told several thousand acres burned, but crews have been working at cleaning out the burned trees so much of it is already gone. The area where we found most of the birds is the first burnt area we came to on the left (northwest) side of Thompson Forest Road. The birds were moving around quite a bit, so it was difficult to keep track of exactly how many BB Woodpeckers there were. I suspect there are more that we didn't see. [mou-net] Clark's Grebe - Kittson; Eurasian Wigeon - Marshall
Ron Erpelding and I found a couple of interesting birds today up in NW Minnesota. First we located a single Clark's Grebe associating with a pair of Western Grebes at the Karlstad WTP in Kittson County. Butch Ukura and Jeannie Joppru were both able to see the bird later, and Butch said he took lots of pictures, which I'm sure will be my better than my couple of crummy ones. The bill on the Clark's was bright yellow versus a greenish yellow, the black at the top of the head did not go below the eye as it did with the Westerns, and the flanks were noticeably lighter than on the Westerns. We then went to Agassiz NWR in Marshall County and found a Eurasian Wigeon on the Mud River Pool on the refuge. This is in an area (Enhanced Access area) that requires a key from the staff to get to. One of the staff later refound the bird and has posted it to eBird. [mou-net] Snowy Owl - Carver County
At 5:37 this afternoon, after about 4 hours of searching the area, Ron Erpelding and I re-found the Snowy Owl that was reported last Sunday in western Carver County. The owl was sitting atop a power pole along Yale Ave. 0.2 miles north of Hwy 7. We believe it to be an adult female. Since the sighting last week was around 6PM, and we had also gone by this same location earlier today, we suspect this Snowy only comes out very late in the day to begin hunting. [mou-net] Snowy Owls in Pope, Swift, Chippewa, Yellow Medicine
To re-use a phrase I used a month or so ago, I had a fairly successful day searching for Snowy Owls today. Early this afternoon, I relocated the Snowy that Ron Erpelding had reported on February 2nd from NE Pope County. The owl was in exactly the same location as it had been when Ron found it - on 110th St. 1/2 mile east of CR33 about 50 yards off the road on the south side. Around 3:20 in the afternoon, I found a Snowy Owl in Swift County along 110th Ave SE (CR85) which is north of Murdock. It was 0.2 miles south of 30th St SE (CR16), and on the ground about 300 yards to the west. While I was writing down the location, the owl departed and I did not see in what direction it went. Shortly after 5:00, I found a Snowy Owl in western Chippewa County 0.6 miles east of CR6 along 10 St. NW. This owl was sitting alongside of a drainage ditch about 300 yards to the north side of the road. Please note that there is a 10 St. SW two miles to the south, and the street signs on both simply say 10 St., so check your maps. Finally, at 6:00 I relocated a Snowy Owl in Yellow Medicine County that Ron Erpelding had reported a month ago. This is on 260th Ave. 0.3 miles west of 500th St. The Owl was on the ground about 200 yards to the south. [mou-net] Snowy Owls - Sibley, Freeborn, Waseca
I was able to relocate one of the Snowy Owls in Sibley County around 11:30 this morning. It was along CR9 south of Arlington, perched on a power pole alongside the driveway for fire number 25786. Presumably this is the same bird that Denny Martin found yesterday. Around 2:40 in the afternoon, I relocated the Snowy Owl near Hartland in Freeborn County. Today it was about 3/10 of a mile south of CR33 along 670th Ave, on the ground on a small hill about 200 yards south of 670th Ave. On my way back, I explored a little in Waseca County and around 4:00 I was fortunate to find an immature Snowy Owl on a power pole along 80th St. about 1/2 mile south of Hwy 30. [mou-net] Snowy Owls in Redwood and Brown Counties
This afternoon around 2:05 Ron Erpelding and I were able to refind the Snowy Owl that had been reported in Redwood County. The location is 0.4 miles south of 240th St. on CR13. There are two wood fence posts on the west side of the road at that point which are part of a former fence line. The bird was along the former fence line quite a distance from the road on a little knoll. We had to use a scope to be certain that it was actually a Snowy Owl. After that we headed back to Brown County to search for the Snowy Owl that we had unsuccessfully searched for earlier in the day. We instead found another Snowy Owl along the way. This was a very dark immature female sitting on the ground 1.8 miles east of Hwy4 along CR22. The bird was about 150 yards away on the south side of CR22, roughly 0.2 miles west of house number 24955. [mou-net] Snowy Owls in western Minnesota
Yesterday Ron Erpelding and I made to trip to western Minnesota to see if we could find more Snowy Owls. We were fairly successful, finding a Snowy Owl in each of 4 different counties: Douglas County: 4 miles north of Osakis on CR3 (there had been a previously reported bird 6 miles north of Osakis) Grant County: CR12, just west of where 320th Ave goes south. This is near the western edge of the county. Traverse County: CR64 goes east, south, and back west off of CR15 in the southeastern corner of the county. The Owl was in the field at the southeast corner of CR64. Big Stone County: 690th Ave about 1/2 mile north of 260th St (also called CR54 on the streetsign, but is labeled as CR2 on my map). This is in the northeast corner of the county. Today Ron was busy with family doings, so I went on my own intending to check a few more counties. I spent most of the day in Pope County without finding a Snowy Owl there. However, I did find one on the Stevens/Pope county line (400th Ave) on the Stevens County side of the road. This location is south of Cyrus (Pope County) about 6 miles, midway between 250th St. and 260th St. These two streets are in Stevens County, but correspond to what they would be if they continued into Pope County. Use caution in exploring these areas. There are many No Maintenance roads out there. All of these birds are on maintained roads, but even these roads can have some drifts since the last snowplow went through. Last night, I finally found not just one, but 2 of them calling from a field in an area where I had least expected them. From what I can determine, this is a county record. The location is on the north side of 155th St NE (2 miles south of the Morrison County line), about 100 yards west of 195th Ave (the Mille Lacs County line). This is private property, but one of the birds was fairly close and could be easily heard from the road. Little Rock Lake was still partially ice-covered, but was very active with birdlife. By walking down the paved road to the east about 100 yards, and then taking the trail to the right that curves around the hill, I was able to find where it had settled into a small pond. I was able to get a good look with my scope and positively identify it as a White-faced Ibis. Unfortunately, about the time I identified it, some ducks in the pond spooked and the Ibis went with them. Hopefully, it's still in the area somewhere. [mou-net] Common Gallinule - Stevens; Buff-breasted SP - Swift and Chippewa
This morning around 10:45 I found a Common Gallinule along the Morris District Wetland auto loop (off of CR10 a few miles east of Morris). Just after you pass signpost 6 along the auto loop, stop and scan the wetland to your right. The Gallinule was about midway along the length of the wetland, and on the far side. This bird has already lost its red shield (Sibley says Feb-Sep), so you will need to look for a non-white bill and the white stripe along its flank to distinguish it from the many Coots also present. There was a young bird in close proximity which I suspect was also a Gallinule, but with the distance I was unable to confirm. Five Buff-breasted Sandpipers were present on Shakopee Lake off of CR4 in northern Chippewa County. Enter the county park off of CR4, and there is a large mudflat barely visible to your right through the trees as you reach the park. I was able to see them from the park through a small hole through the trees but donned some boots to go down to the lakeside for a good view. Many other shorebirds were also present. The northern end of the Shakopee Lake bumps up into Swift County, and a stop along the county line road there produced 4 more Buff-breasted Sandpipers. Also of note: I found several Red-breasted Nuthatches in all three counties, so there appears to be an irruption going on for them also. [mou-net] Three-toed and Black-backed Woodpeckers - Crow Wing
This afternoon the sound of tapping led me to a male Three-toed Woodpecker in northeastern Crow Wing County. The bird was initially in the southeast corner of the intersection of CR1 and Low's Lake Rd (about 2.3 miles from the Aitkin County line). It later flew across CR1 to the north side and was last seen about 80 feet into the trees there. It appeared the bird had spent a lot of time on the south side of the road where there were a number of trees worked over. I was able to contact several people in the area - Barb and Denny Martin, Milt Blomberg and Frank Gosiak, and Butch Ukura and Warren Nelson - who were able to get there and see the bird. After almost everyone had left, I decided to do a more thorough check of the area and found a male Black-backed Woodpecker in the same general area. There is a power line going south from CR1 a few hundred yards west of the above intersection, and this bird was on the north side of CR1 directly across from that powerline. Barb and Denny were fortunately still around to see this bird. Also seen in the vicinity were 2 Gray Jays, a couple of Pine Grosbeaks, and a flock of about 20 White-winged Crossbills. The bird was loosely associating with a flock of Ruddy Ducks, which made for an interesting comparison. The bird was at the south end of the lake, and was most easily seen from Llama St NW, which is on the west side of the lake. You will need a scope. Also, at the location where I viewed the Black Scoter, there is a pasture and adjacent corn stubble field between Llama St NW and the lake that had approximately 30 geese resting or foraging. [mou-net] Red-throated Loon - Isanti County
At about 7:15 this evening I found a winter-plumaged Red-throated Loon at the north end of South Stanchfield Lake. This lake is in northwestern Isanti County off of CR15. Initially the bird was swimming away from me along the left (east) side of the lake, so I tried to get a better look from CR15 along that side of the lake. After several unsuccessful passes up and down the side of the lake, I returned to the boat launch and found the loon had done an about-face and was now closer to the boat launch, allowing me to now get some very good looks. The bird was resting with its head tucked into its back when I left at 8:40, so I expect it may still be there in the morning. Also present on the lake was an Eared Grebe. [mou-net] Bohemian Waxwings moving south?
In the last 2 days Bohemian Waxwings have been found in both Todd (about 1 mile north of Long Prairie yesterday) and Mille Lacs Counties (Onamia today). I also know they were found in Morrison County a week or two ago. These all seem to be rather far south, especially for this early in the winter. So far I don't see any reports for the southern half of the state in the seasonal reports, but keep your eyes open and check those Waxwing flocks carefully. [mou-net] Black-legged Kittiwake update
Ron Erpelding called and said he had refound the Black-legged Kittiwake in the same location as Bill Unzen reported yesterday. He first saw the bird on the water at 11:20 and later saw it flying at 11:45. He also reports the roads are good and the sun is shining there. [mou-net] White-eyed Vireo - Lac Qui Parle County
Around 2:00 this afternoon, I found a White-eyed Vireo in Lac Qui Parle County. Coming into Lac Qui Parle County from Chippewa County on Hwy 40 (which splits Lac Qui Parle Lake), take the 1st right on CR66. Almost immediately you will come to a home on your right, almost completely hidden by evergreens and cedars. I stopped here to check for Purple Finches (I didn't find any), but was puzzled when I caught a glimpse of a small green-backed bird with a yellow belly in the cedars to the left of the driveway. Eventually I did get a good look at the yellow spectacles, olive-green back, white wing bars, and a yellow belly. I initially thought it was a Yellow-throated Vireo, but knew something didn't look right, and a quick check in my Sibley reminded me a Yellow-throated Vireo would have a white belly. [mou-net] WW Scoter and Summer Tanager in Morrison refound
Ron Erpelding called and said he had refound the White-winged Scoter on Green Prairie Fish Lake, and the Summer Tanager on the north side of Fishtrap Lake. The Summer Tanager was back where it was originally found at house number 2441, but there are also crab apple trees next door at 2393, so check both places. He had not refound the Townsend's Solitaire yet. Herb Dingmann Join or Leave mou-net: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html
[mou-net] WW Crossbill - Hawley (Clay County)
This afternoon while returning from Kim Eckert's Polk County MBW, Ron Erpelding and I stopped in Hawley in Clay County. In the spruce trees near the entrance to the Hawley Golf Course (on the south side of Hwy 10), we were surprised to find 3 White-winged Crossbills - 1 juvenile male and 2 females. [mou-net] Ross Goose - Rogers (Hennepin)
On my way to look for the White-winged Scoter this afternoon, I stopped by the Rogers sewage ponds and found a Ross Goose associating with the Canada and Cackling Geese. I did find the White-Winged Scoter on Lake Harriet before it moved, so my thanks to Tom Tustison for posting it. [mou-net] Loggerhead Shrike - Yellow Med., Peregrine Falcons - Chippewa
A single Loggerhead Shrike was found on a highline wire along CR15 0.5 miles north of Hwy68. This is in the far western end of the county. On my way out there I passed through Granite Falls. As I passed by the NSP power plant along Hwy 212, I checked for Peregrine Falcons around the smokestacks there as I've done I don't know how many times. Yesterday, for the first time, there were some present. One bird was seen circling the smokestacks, and another was seen from within the hackbox located on the left smokestack. [mou-net] Probable Ross Goose - Pigeon Lake, Meeker County
On my way home from Carver County this evening, I stopped at the Pigeon Lake overlook off of Hwy 15 in Meeker County to see what might be there. Among all of the cormorants, pelicans, herons, and egrets on the island were a few Ring-billed Gulls and one white goose which seemed to be roughly the same size as the gulls. It was working its way towards the right point of the island, so it had its back to me for the most part as it wended its way through the cormorants and I never got a very good look at the bill. Once it reached the point, it continued on around towards the backside of the island and was immediately lost from sight behind all of the other birds. It was either a Snow Goose or a Ross Goose, but based on its apparent size, I'm leaning towards Ross Goose. If anyone gets a better look, I'd appreciate hearing your opinion. [mou-net] Laughing Gull - Lake Koronis in Stearns County
Phil Chu asked me to report that he had found a Laughing Gull on the northwest side of Lake Koronis near Paynesville in Stearns County. The bird was seen from CR181 about 0.5 miles north of its intersection with Crest Ridge Road, where CR181 comes near the lake. [mou-net] Short-eared Owl - Swift County
I went to Swift County late today to look for the Snowy Owl that Joel Schmitt and Ron Erpelding found a few weeks ago. I did not find it. However, a Short-eared Owl was in that very same area, hunting over the grassland. The location is 0.3 miles south of Highway 9 on the west side of CR31, and the sighting was at 6:20. [mou-net] WW Crossbills in Staples (Todd County)
During the Philbrook CBC today, a flock of White-winged Crossbills was found in Staples. The birds were seen at the corner of Dakota Ave SE and 7th St SE (a few blocks south of Hwy 10 and east of Hwy 210), but I noticed spruce cones on the ground in a few other places in town, so they've obviously been moving around. [mou-net] Lake Osakis - Black and WW Scoter, No Pacific Loon
Ron Erpelding asked me to post that he was unable to re-find the Pacific Loon on Lake Osakis today. He did find both White-winged and Black Scoters there, however. Herb Dingmann Join or Leave mou-net:http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives:http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html
[mou-net] Black Scoters - Benton County
Late Tuesday Jeff Stephenson called me to report that he had found a Black Scoter at the Rice sewage ponds in Benton County. Ron Erpelding just called at 7:30 this morning and says there are 3 Black Scoters still there. [mou-net] WW Crossbills - Wright, Meeker, McLeod Counties
I set out with high hopes this afternoon to try to find White-winged Crossbills in Wright, Meeker, and McLeod Counties. The first stop I made was at Bendix Elementary School in Annandale (Wright County), where I found 3 birds in the line of spruces between the school and the adjacent football field. The school is on the east side of Hwy 24 on the north side of town. Buoyed by my instant good fortune, I then headed to Hutchinson (McLeod County) and after a few unsuccessful stops arrived at the large cemetery on the east side of Hwy 15 midway through town. Almost immediately a flock of 25 crossbills flew towards me, circled around and headed for the south part of the cemetery. I eventually re-found them next to a park just south of the cemetery, feeding on what I believe are White Spruces - the cones they were feeding on appeared to be larger than the birds! I then headed north to Litchfield (Meeker), but before I arrived there, I came across a nice grove of White Spruces that I felt had to have Crossbills in them. Sure enough, after 10 minutes of scanning I found a small group there. This location is a few miles south of Litchfield along Hwy 22, just north of 230th St. The birds were feeding in the 2 trees that are south of the driveway. Look for house numbers 23094 and 23086. Since I was on a roll, I decided to try my luck in Kandiyohi County also. I searched the towns of Atwater and Kandiyohi, and the Clover Leaf Cemetery just east of Willmar northeast of the intersection of Hwy 12 and CR9. I was not able to find any birds, but I found indications they had been there by the cones on the ground at all three places. [mou-net] White-winged Crossbills; NO Black-Backed Woodpecker - Morrison Co. (Cushing)
Following Frank Gosiak's post from last weekend, I headed up to Cushing to look for the Black-backed Woodpecker. Two hours of searching the tamaracks produced nothing but a couple of Hairy's in the Woodpecker family, although there were plenty of trees that had been worked over. However, I was somewhat compensated by seeing a half-dozen White-winged Crossbills in the Black Spruces that are mixed in with the Tamaracks. I also heard them or others several times while searching for the Black-backed Woodpecker. To get to this spot, turn south on CR11 off of Hwy 10 in Cushing. You will immediately come to a snowmobile trail crossing CR11. Pull over on the shoulder (plenty of room), and then follow the snowmobile trail into the tamaracks. Several hundred yards in you will see where the trees have been worked on to the right of the trail. There is a smaller snowmobile trail going left at that point, and the crossbills were seen where the trees end to the right of that secondary trail. Several parties of snowmobiles went through while I was there, so I suspect the Woodpecker may have moved away from the noise deeper into the trees, or may have left the area altogether. [mou] Buff-breasted Sandpiper Amer. Golden-Plover - Anoka
This evening (Saturday, the 16th) around 7:30, Ron Erpelding and I located 2 Buff-breasted Sandpipers and 2 American Golden-Plovers at the sod farms along CR14 just east of its intersection with CR53. The birds were at the far side of the fields on the south side of CR14 directly across from the A L Sod offices. You will need a scope to see them. Also note that CR14 is under construction and is detoured if you try to come from either the west or the east, so your best bet might be to come up CR53. [mou] Three-toed Woodpecker - Wadena County
This afternoon around 1:00 I discovered a Three-toed Woodpecker in Wadena County in an area of tamaracks northwest of Sebeka. From Sebeka, go north on Hwy 71 for 1.5 miles. Turn left onto CR142 and go one mile, then turn right on 119th Ave. Go north 1.2 miles and look for the worked over tamaracks on the right-hand side. I also found Pine Grosbeaks in both Menahga and Sebeka. Herb Dingmann St. Cloud -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... [mou] Lesser Black-backed Gull still at Pearl Lake - Stearns
The Lesser Black-backed Gull found by Phil Chu yesterday was re-found at 4:30 today. A large number of Ring-billed Gulls returned to the lake at that time, and apparently the Lesser Black-backed was among them, since I hadn't seen it in the hour preceding that. The best spot to scan from is the boat access on the north side of the lake. Herb Dingmann St. Cloud -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
