[mou-net] Mountain Bluebird location

2016-03-12 Thread Pete Makousky
I am not sure if I will confuse more people or not but some of the
directions I have been seeing on posts for the Mountain Bluebird don't make
sense to me.
Maybe I am misunderstanding the post from William below but if you go PAST
77TH STREET there is a small park sign and you can turn right into a (muddy
right now) parking lot.
There is no need to walk over piles of gravel, but again, maybe this is just
another way so I hope I don't bring about confusion - not my intent.
See the PDF file link below that has a blow up of the park.
And as William states it is very "strange, isolated, and triangular."
I am truly hoping that this helps.
God Bless

Yes, Earl, it sounds like you may have been south of this strange, isolated
triangle of public land. I don't have a GPS to follow the coordinates, but,
on my home computer, I bring up Google Maps and type the coordinates into
the "search" box and hit enter: it comes right up on the map. After taking
down the roads to get there [I-94 to co. rd. 24 (Clearwater)over the
Mississippi to Co. Rd. 8 SE (also called River Road)northward to 77th STREET
(don't let the avenues confuse you because they also come into Co. Rd. 8);
turn left into 77th St. and take it to a 90 degree turn left - STOP THERE
AND PARK - going further is private road going to a farm house- (looking at
the aerial view on Google maps is helpful, too); then continue to walk
straight west (over the half dozen piles of gravel) about 40 yards and the
triangle of open meadow will be on your right. The coordinates take you
about 2/3 toward the far end - that is where we first saw the BBs; after
that they chased around the meadow but seemed to like to return to that
first spot! The Solitaire was there, too.
Did I give you too much information?

crows. They were heavily crowded together.

Never seen this before. Is this a favorite spot of theirs?

[mou-net] Felton Prairie

A nice visit to Felton Prairie this morning netted my 300th Minnesota bird;
the Chestnut-collared Longspur.

Also a few Marbled Godwit flying about and chatting up a storm.

Eastern Western Kingbird, and Horned Lark.

Thought it was going to rain. We were up by 2:30am and at Felton Prairie by
6:30am.

Found the Chestnut-sided Longspur between the 2nd cattle gate and the top of
the hill (right before the dip).

[mou-net] Long-eared Owl - Anoka County

2014-04-11 Thread Pete Makousky
Hey All -

I found a Long-eared Owl at Springbrook Nature Center in Fridley.

Behind the visitor's center. There is a shed with an overhang and go under
the overhang and past the big trees with the bird house (on one of them).

Veer a bit left. I stuck a pencil in the ground and that is where I stood to
view the bird.

If was high in a tree just right of the biggest tree that is about 6 feet
from the pencil.

Hope that helps. Not sure if it will still be there later in the day
tomorrow as Springbrook will be having a spring celebration with tons of
people roaming the grounds.

[mou-net] Ramsey Snowy Owls

2014-02-12 Thread Pete Makousky
I saw both Snowy Owls today in the city of Ramsey.

The west side owl was in one of its usual spots and at approximately 3:30pm
there was one gentleman there taking photos with a nice long lens.

I didn't see anyone else there and didn't notice this gentleman doing any
baiting.

I then went to look for the east side owl using the information that I
gathered from the Snow Project web site.

I found it within 15 minutes. It was sitting up on top of the Cor Living
building just west of the City Hall bldg and the NorthStar depot.

The owl was atop the roof on the SW corner of the building.

What a cool sight. I could actually see it from the stoplight at Armstrong
Hwy 10 and also saw it driving on 10 as I was heading back east.

[mou-net] Ramsey Snowy Owl

2014-02-11 Thread Pete Makousky
I know of at least 2 Snowy Owls in Ramsey (maybe 3) but it appears that the
Snowy being tracked by Project Snow is the owl on the east side of
Armstrong.

The Snowy that is being baited is on the west side of Armstrong and it
almost always in the same relative spot (thus it has gotten lots of
exposure).

I am also saddened by the uninformed photographers who get way too close and
the insane baiting.

Anyway, I did look at the tracking of the east side Snowy and I can tell
(from the few spots that I saw it) that it is the same owl and does move
around quite a bit.

And that is why I haven't been able to locate it as frequently.

Thanks for all the posts on these owls.

[mou-net] Anoka County Snowy Still Present

2014-02-02 Thread Pete Makousky
Went to look for the Snowy Owl today in Ramsey, MN.

At least 1 still present and in pretty much the same area of 147th Ferret
which is accessed by taking Highway 10 West to Armstrong Blvd.

Go right or north over railroad tracks and turn left at the 1st stoplight
which is 147th. 1 block down is Ferret but the owl has been seen anywhere
within that square block.

I've seen it on top of the 2 business roofs that are on Ferret, on top of
the huge tower, on top of metal light poles and on top of wooden utility
poles.

Best way to find it (as others have pointed out) is to look for multiple
cars, people with scopes etc.

[mou-net] Anoka County - Ramsey Snowy still present

2014-01-15 Thread Pete Makousky
Personally I have yet to see both the Snowy Owls in the city of Ramsey but I
know that there are 2 being reported.

I did see on today from 3-4pm on top of the large, large tower.

It apparently was in the field by the tower when a gentleman with 2
unleashed dogs disturbed it.

This is according to the gentleman in question as I spoke kindly to him.
Didn't want to get all up in his face.

Later I ran into an old supervisor of mine and he said he's been taking
photos of one of the owls as it has been seen near the roundabout by
Coburn's.

[mou-net] Ramsey Snowy Owl

2014-01-08 Thread Pete Makousky
Spent a few quick minutes looking for the Snowy Owl in Ramsey today around
4pm.

It didn't take more than 5 minutes and I was on it as there were 2 vehicles
with the drivers enjoying and taking photos.

I just had my binoculars but got great views. Then I noticed that the
forehead on this Snowy had black markings.

Those markings do not seem to match the photos that I took on Sunday.

I am guessing as others have suggested, that there are indeed 2 Snowy Owls
in this vicinity.

The location I saw the owl at today was from the corner of 146th Ave NW and
Ferret St. NW.

The owl was seen at the top of a wooden utility pole west of Ferret and
south of the huge tower.
