[Mpls] Wellstone's Memorial & Park Cuts
IMHO... My guess is that one of the things we look back on 20 years from now will be a variety of Memorials to the Wellstones, all three of them individually and/or collectively throughout Minnesota. There will be Board Rooms, and statutes, and schools and parks and community centers, endowments, scholarships, parades, events, public policy Institute's and courses and lessons learned - you name it all over the place. So everyone that wants to name something after them should just figure out how to do it and go for it. So far, all the suggestions I've heard sound good. Remember, you can never have too much of a good thing. And for your reading pleasure - seeing your parks in a different way - the cuts are in the paper this morning. Here they are for you.. Re: [Mpls] Wellstone's Memorial
I regret that Paul's only cogent connection with Prospect Park ( Where Schneiders has dwelt all these years) was that he garnered something like 90%of the vote there. If he and family had only lived there awhile I don't think there would be too much outcry if it were proposed that the neighborhood landmark tower were named after him. From: Annie Young <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [Mpls] Wellstone's Memorial Date: Mon, 10 Mar 2003 02:23:24 -0600 [AY]"SCHOOL MAY HONOR WELLSTONE WITH NAME CHANGE" Marcy Open School in Southeast Minneapolis is considering changing its name to honor the late Senator Paul Wellstone. [JM] I'm a fan of the late Senator Wellstone for a number or reasons not the least of which that prior to becoming a Senator Professor Wellstone and family were wonderful neighbors for my grandmother in Northfield. I would be in favor of naming a school in his honr and an Open School seems appropriate. I'm curious, however, as to the origin of the current name of Marcy Open School. Perhaps its a non-issue since the neighborhood will continue to carry that name, but is there a historian online that can answer this? Re: [Mpls] Wellstone's Memorial
A Heritage Park school/park/community center would make three Minneapolis schools interested in the Wellstone name (St. Paul has six). I couldn't find the One Nation News story online, but for another article about the proposed school name change (from before the March 6 community meeting), see: http://www.southeastangle.info/articles/article.php?id=16 ("Marcy considers bid for late senator's name"). The next Southeast Angle will have more coverage at the end of the month. Chris Steller Editor, Southeast Angle neighborhood newspaper www. southeastangle.info TEMPORARY REMINDER: 1. [Mpls] Wellstone's Memorial
This came over the wires from the e-newsletter, The Minneapolis Observor. "SCHOOL MAY HONOR WELLSTONE WITH NAME CHANGE Marcy Open School in Southeast Minneapolis is considering changing its name to honor the late Senator Paul Wellstone. The move is being discussed by a group of parents and staff members, reports One Nation News (http://www.onenationnews.com). "Wellstone embodied many of the traits and qualities taught at Marcy Open School, respect for the individual, importance of education, celebrating diversity, and compassion for the world," said a representative of the group, which met for the first time March 6. A name change would require the approval of the school board." The reason I bring this up is that there has been some current/informal discussion about the possibility of naming a school/park/community center complex at the Bethune site in Heritage Park after the Wellstone's with something like the Wellstone Family Center. Anyone have more thoughts or considerations on this topic - where should a Wellstone Community Memorial be in Minneapolis? Annie Young citywide Park Commissioner
