[mssms] RE: KB2984972 and App-V

2014-10-23 Thread Stephen Murley
Here's the solution from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2984972

Known issues with this security update

Symptoms
After you install this security update, virtualized applications in Microsoft
Application Virtualization (App-V) versions 4.5, 4.6, and 5.0 may experience
problems loading. When the problem occurs, you may receive an error message
that resembles the following:
Launching MyApp 100%

Note In this error message, MyApp represents the name of the App-V application.

Depending on the scenario, the virtualized app may stop responding after it
starts, or the app may not start at all.

Important This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to
modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the
registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps
carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it.
Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information
about how to back up and restore the registry, click the following article
number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
322756 How to back up and restore the registry in Windows

Resolution
To resolve this known issue, configure the TermSrvReadyEvent registry entry on
the computer where the Microsoft Application Virtualization Client is installed.

For Microsoft Application Virtualization 5.0
Registry Key: HKLM\Software\Microsoft\AppV\Subsystem\ObjExclusions
Value name: 93 (Or any unique value)
Type: REG_SZ
Data: TermSrvReadyEvent

Example
For example, type the following command at an elevated command prompt to add
the entry to a system running Application Virtualization 5.0:
reg add HKLM\Software\Microsoft\AppV\Subsystem\ObjExclusions /v 93 /t REG_SZ /d
TermSrvReadyEvent
For Microsoft Application Virtualization 4.6
For all supported x86-based systems

Registry Key: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SoftGrid\4.5\SystemGuard\ObjExclusions
Value name: 95 (Or any unique value)
Type: REG_SZ
Data: TermSrvReadyEvent

Example
For example, type the following command at an elevated command prompt to add
the entry to an x86-based system running Application Virtualization 4.6:
reg add HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SoftGrid\4.5\SystemGuard\ObjExclusions /v 95 /t
REG_SZ /d TermSrvReadyEvent
For all supported x64-based systems

Registry Key:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\SoftGrid\4.5\SystemGuard\ObjExclusions
Value name: 95 (Or any unique value)
Type: REG_SZ
Data: TermSrvReadyEvent

Example
For example, type the following command at an elevated command prompt to add
the entry to an x64-based system running Application Virtualization 4.6:
reg add
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\SoftGrid\4.5\SystemGuard\ObjExclusions /v

[mssms] RE: Internet Explorer ActiveX

2014-08-11 Thread Stephen Murley
The other thing to remember is ... it's not us IT bods that call the shots in
every location. If we could just simply keep everything up-to-date we would but
when your IT department is stretched, it's hard to prove to the powers that be
that you need extra resource to keep on top of something that they don't see
any tangible evidence of being a problem. We just need a high profile person to
get hacked due to JRE and hey presto we'll find that extra resource!!

Subject: [mssms] RE: Internet Explorer ActiveX

How are you guys going to handle this?

Your options are Patch it or Pitch
Ithttp://krebsonsecurity.com/2014/07/java-update-patch-it-or-pitch-it/ as
Brian Krebs put it.

If you can't do either, you need to have some other significant control in
place like not allowing these devices to have internet access. If a user needs
an outdated Java for one or two apps, give them a link to a Remote Desktop or
Remote Presentation instance of a browser with outdated Java, but that remote
system must only have access to the website that needed the outdate link.

While I'm sure lots of IT admins will have excuses, they are all solvable
problems as long as someone starts actual working on them. The GPO option
should only ever be used as a last ditch effort to buy time for a fix to be put
in place. Don't enable that GPO until there is a clear plan with deadlines on
how you will disable it. It's time to stop kicking the can down the road.

We don't have any real business use for Java or flash.

Removing it may make users unhappy since there is so much flash content out on
the web. You can turn on Flash's auto update so that it does it silently in
the background on systems. This means user get what they want, systems stay
secure, and you don't have to manage anything.

But, don't forget about Shockwave… Shockwave embeds its own version of flash
that is up to 18 months out of
datehttp://krebsonsecurity.com/2014/05/why-you-should-ditch-adobe-shockwave/.
This means there really isn't a secure way to have Shockwave. Luckily, very
little web content still uses it and you could likely get away with removing it
from the enterprise. If you do have a business need for it, you should
consider the same strategy as with Java of using locked down remote desktops or
remote presentation to give access to the offending business app.

I hope that helps,

Nash

My main block to just deploying Java updates to all systems with Java installed
is the two major statistical packages - SAS and SPSS. They both install very
old customized versions of Java and as far as I can tell will not operate
correctly with any current versions of Java. I have to be extra careful not to
remove those versions of Java installed by SAS. If I mistakenly remove Java on
one of these machines, it is about a 2.5 hour round trip to get SAS back
working again.

The version of Java that is tied in to IE can be upgraded on these systems, but
it tricky business to uninstall/upgrade java for IE's use and leave only
certain older versions installed for SAS - so I usually do not bother.

Mostly the problem is keeping track of what machines have old java installed
for a reason - and so cannot be upgraded while keeping all of the other Java
installations up to date. What I have done is created a special entry in the
registry on machines that need to be passed over while doing Java updates. The
java upgrade script I wrote checks for that registry key before any upgrade is
performed.

It is going to be a lot of work on those workstations with the aforementioned
stats packages installed to keep IE's Java install up to date.

But, don't forget about Shockwave... Shockwave embeds its own version of flash
that is up to 18 months out of
datehttp://krebsonsecurity.com/2014/05/why-you-should-ditch-adobe-shockwave/.

I imaging him as an introverted narcissist basking in the glow of all of the
attention but without the emotional tools to participate in the conversation.

Or maybe I am just trolling him.

I suspect Chuck has an email rule that deletes all email from this list.
Otherwise he would have commented at least once over the years when we comment
on his vacation time.

Right, I think the idea though is that most people just follow directions, so
they need to be guided on how best to implement the update. Since it's more
likely that people will follow Microsoft guidance, than some random person's

Right, I think the idea though is that most people just follow directions, so
they need to be guided on how best to implement the update. Since it's more
likely that people will follow Microsoft guidance, than some random person's
blog (like mine :)), I think it is advisable for Microsoft to write with this
mindset.

it's blogged to be deployed as a classic package/program/advert. I can't see

lol. Well, I'm testing it out (as an App Deployment) right now in our lab.
Two DTs; one for x64, one for x86; requirements of the OS in... All X64 Windows
7... etc. etc. for the right one. And detection logic of just the file
%windir%\system32\wuaueng.dll greater than or = 7.6.7600.320

I can't see why that wouldn't work perfectly But that's what testing is for.

The bad patch is kb2965788 which causes a double boot and breaks SCCM OSD
Task Sequences. I have found this to be true on Win 7 x64 deployments and have
read that it does not affect 32bit Windows 7 - but I haven't tested that myself.

IT accidentally deploys Windows 7 to everything

I don't think taking the ability to do something like deploying to All System
collection would fix the issue because there other ways to re-create them such
as a bad WQL that adds all systems.

How about step in the TS to verify critical systems such as DCs, DNS, DHCPs,
and others? I guess this can be accomplished right now though a script to
identify these roles on a server
How about a mandatory pop-up window with a timer (hint: powershell deployment
toolkit) on the client only critical infra systems?
How about a touch file that pauses the deployment like Johan does, use web
services and/or orchestrator to send and email, receive a response and create
the file?
How about a SCCM deployment tab where critical windows roles (DC, DNS, etc..)
like OS selection in the requirement tab of a program? Default is set to skip
those critical roles unless selected.

There are hundreds of innovative ways that can be provided currently to prevent
such critical infra systems from getting imaged improperly at 'run-time'.

Note it may be possible to engineer something using SCORCH and status filter

and the way Microsoft interpreted it was that if you did something based on
status filter rules from CM and sending instructions back to CM; you are
affecting a client--i.e., potentially every single client in CM that you
have. So pony up the $ for the expensive licensing for every single client.
You may be able to negotiate something; but be aware of that if you are looking
at status filter rule triggers and automation via scorch. It could end up
costing you more than if you sent your people to training instead!

In my opinion the All Systems collection shouldn’t be allowed in Deployments
(all kinds)

However, you will never ever prevent issues. E.g. I create my own All Sys
collections, Membership Rule include All Systems.
Same collection but without limitations.
What about an RBAC feature limiting a User to a specific number of deployments.
UserA is only allowed to deploy to a maximum of 50 machines?

Usual deal ... Remote Code Execution that takes over the computer with the

It can be exploited via the usual email attachment, or, more worryingly, The
vulnerability could be exploited when the specially crafted RTF email message

There is a fix-it available which configures the Microsoft Office File Block

[mssms] RE: OT: VPro

2014-02-04 Thread Stephen Murley
My colleague who is off sick atm knows much more than me as I've not had any
direct involvement for the last year. I remember us having to buy a 3rd party
certificate when we got rid of Intel's SCS Server and moved to SCCM. Although
we're soon having to resurrect a new SCS server as apparently the latest
version of vPro is not supported in SCCM 2007 or 2012, and only via Intel's SCS
Server.

Without even using a cert right? They show 3-4 ways to provision a machine:
Manual, Manual with a USB key, Host based (EXE with XML file) and Remote (fully
automated). From watching their instructional videos, it would seem you only
need to purchase a cert for the Remote method.

Well, it's true that you don't have to use SCCM to do vPro. You can just use
Intel's Provision Server.

could do the Host based provisioning and use SCCM to deploy the provisioning

2014-01-02 Thread Stephen Murley
CHUCK's 2013 LEAVE CARD (I've kept count) ...

Was 24.5 days off this year.

If we take it that he gets 25/26th off and 1st and the business doesn't close
in-between, then it'll be 2 days before Christmas, 3 afterwards before end of
2013.

So, that's 29.5 days off for Chuck in 2013.

Into 2014, and he'd have 2nd and 3rd off, so he's got 2 on his leave card
already.

What's the big deal? My company gives salaried employees 30 days paid time off

Into 2014, and he'd have 2nd and 3rd off, so he's got 2 on his leave card
 already.

[mssms] RE: HOTFIX: An update is available that adds support for Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2 to System Center Configuration Manager 2007 Service Pack 2

2013-11-19 Thread Stephen Murley
See they updated the KB article on this one to say that the update for Windows
8 SCCM Clients also applies to Windows 8.1 SCCM Clients:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2861663

Note This update affects only those platforms that are included in the
supported platforms list. The client part of KB 2750782
(SCCM2007AC-SP2-KB2698619-x86-ENU.msp) was originally released to provide
support for Windows 8. However, it also applies to Windows 8.1 clients.

Ah, right. It doesn’t make that clear in the KB or in the article (kind of
suggests it without spelling it out) that this adds the client hotfix to SCCM.
Makes it sound like it’s just a hotfix to add supported platform tick boxes to
those particular areas and not a client hotfix. I get it now. It’s actually the
latter ☺

That adds the tick boxes etc, but does the sccm 2007 sp2 client actually work
on these new platforms without any other update?

Hi there folks

I wanted to ask a question around an interesting issue which I am seeing.

We are in a desktop transformation project at a client and happily deploying
task sequences to rebuild the OS. We have seen some failures and on
investigation these systems all were laptops and all had their lids down before
they booted into PE.

The boot started into PE and hung at the logo page. Opening the lid resumes
the screen but Windows is remaining hung at that point. Restarting completes
the task sequence as expected.

Now I know that the obvious solution is to tell users to keep the lid open but
I wondered if someone had seen this and fixed?

Oh, these are Lenovo laptops

Jason

Just a reg key change. We're in the same boat as a few others, network admins

change in our image.

I'm guessing most of these existing machines will have been melted into new

By removing that adapter you forfeit any easy means of turning it back on one

is the recommended method and disables it for all adapters.

I wonder whether IPv6 is causing you any problems since the strong
recommendation from Microsoft is that it is left enabled. At present testing
happens on a single-stack IPv6 and dual IPv4, IPv6 stack but they no longer
test code on IPv4 only.

Assuming that your organisation is not yet ready for IPv6 then the routers will
not be configured to route IPv6 so any impact would be restricted to the local
subnet.

Like I said, I was outvoted. I never said it was a good idea :)

I didn't do the testing on this methodology though so exactly how they intended
to turn it back on easily ... well, that wasn't something shared with me.

By removing that adapter you forfeit any easy means of turning it back on one
day. I would recommend the DisabledComponents method as Jimmy mentioned, that
is the recommended method and disables it for all adapters.

We disable IPv6 on image deployment. Personally, I voted against doing this but
was outvoted as apparently our networking guys said our network wasn't ready
for IPv6 ...

I think we might do a Group Policy as well, and it was 2 years ago that we did
all this so I'd need to ask colleagues next week. As far as I know we disable
the TEREDO Adaptor which has the desired effect:

cmd.exe /c devcon\i386\devcon.exe REMOVE *TEREDO

I'll check next week and ask. Certainly on our deplooyed computers users cannot
alter any IPv6 settings.

Hello all,

I am no longer able to use email lists at work. This has been happening for the
last 6 months and is not going to get any better due to all of the security
violations. So I am no longer going to be using this account.

Those of you that I have become good friends with over the past few years can
find me at fluks...@gmail.commailto:fluks...@gmail.com
This will also bring you to my Google Plus account. I am very active there and
considering creating a page just for geek stuff.

Google Plus and Hotmail are also being blocked but i always have my phone with
me that has access to email and my g+ account.

If i am able to i may begin blogging again but it probably wont be on
MyitForum.com because all Forums are also being blocked at work except Technet
and Google Blogger

Hope to see some of you on Google Plus.

Thanks,
