[mssms] RE: KB2984972 and App-V
Here's the solution from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2984972 Known issues with this security update Symptoms After you install this security update, virtualized applications in Microsoft Application Virtualization (App-V) versions 4.5, 4.6, and 5.0 may experience problems loading. When the problem occurs, you may receive an error message that resembles the following: Launching MyApp 100% Note In this error message, MyApp represents the name of the App-V application. Depending on the scenario, the virtualized app may stop responding after it starts, or the app may not start at all. Important This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base: 322756 How to back up and restore the registry in Windows Resolution To resolve this known issue, configure the TermSrvReadyEvent registry entry on the computer where the Microsoft Application Virtualization Client is installed. [mssms] RE: Internet Explorer ActiveX
The other thing to remember is ... it's not us IT bods that call the shots in every location. If we could just simply keep everything up-to-date we would but when your IT department is stretched, it's hard to prove to the powers that be that you need extra resource to keep on top of something that they don't see any tangible evidence of being a problem. We just need a high profile person to get hacked due to JRE and hey presto we'll find that extra resource!! From: listsad...@lists.myitforum.com [listsad...@lists.myitforum.com] on behalf of Nash Pherson [na...@nowmicro.com] Sent: 11 August 2014 18:48 To: mssms@lists.myitforum.com Subject: [mssms] RE: Internet Explorer ActiveX How are you guys going to handle this? Your options are Patch it or Pitch Ithttp://krebsonsecurity.com/2014/07/java-update-patch-it-or-pitch-it/ as Brian Krebs put it. If you can't do either, you need to have some other significant control in place like not allowing these devices to have internet access. If a user needs an outdated Java for one or two apps, give them a link to a Remote Desktop or Remote Presentation instance of a browser with outdated Java, but that remote system must only have access to the website that needed the outdate link. While I'm sure lots of IT admins will have excuses, they are all solvable problems as long as someone starts actual working on them. The GPO option should only ever be used as a last ditch effort to buy time for a fix to be put in place. Don't enable that GPO until there is a clear plan with deadlines on how you will disable it. It's time to stop kicking the can down the road. We don't have any real business use for Java or flash. Removing it may make users unhappy since there is so much flash content out on the web. You can turn on Flash's auto update so that it does it silently in the background on systems. This means user get what they want, systems stay secure, and you don't have to manage anything. But, don't forget about Shockwave… Shockwave embeds its own version of flash that is up to 18 months out of datehttp://krebsonsecurity.com/2014/05/why-you-should-ditch-adobe-shockwave/. This means there really isn't a secure way to have Shockwave. Luckily, very little web content still uses it and you could likely get away with removing it from the enterprise. If you do have a business need for it, you should consider the same strategy as with Java of using locked down remote desktops or remote presentation to give access to the offending business app. I hope that helps, Nash Nash Pherson Senior Systems Consultant Now Micro na...@nowmicro.commailto:na...@nowmicro.com Desk: 651-796-1168 Cell: 507-304-0946 [cid:E66BAB9D0721014F843A4C96FA5C47DD@namprd04.prod.outlook.com]http://www.nowmicro.com/ -Original Message- From: listsad...@lists.myitforum.com [mailto:listsad...@lists.myitforum.com] On Behalf Of John Aubrey Sent: Monday, August 11, 2014 12:31 PM To: 'mssms@lists.myitforum.com' Subject: [mssms] RE: Internet Explorer ActiveX How are you guys going to handle this? NIce idea with Registry key. We have a few peeps that have to use Java 6 due to old but critical pieces of software that use it. By default Java 7 uninstalls Java 6. From: listsad...@lists.myitforum.com [listsad...@lists.myitforum.com] on behalf of Miller, Todd [todd-mil...@uiowa.edu] Sent: 11 August 2014 19:02 To: mssms@lists.myitforum.com Subject: [mssms] RE: Internet Explorer ActiveX My main block to just deploying Java updates to all systems with Java installed is the two major statistical packages - SAS and SPSS. They both install very old customized versions of Java and as far as I can tell will not operate correctly with any current versions of Java. I have to be extra careful not to remove those versions of Java installed by SAS. If I mistakenly remove Java on one of these machines, it is about a 2.5 hour round trip to get SAS back working again. The version of Java that is tied in to IE can be upgraded on these systems, but it tricky business to uninstall/upgrade java for IE's use and leave only certain older versions installed for SAS - so I usually do not bother. Mostly the problem is keeping track of what machines have old java installed for a reason - and so cannot be upgraded while keeping all of the other Java installations up to date. What I have done is created a special entry in the registry on machines that need to be passed over while doing Java updates. The java upgrade script I wrote checks for that registry key before any upgrade is performed. It is going to be a lot of work on those workstations with the aforementioned stats packages installed to keep IE's Java install up to date. -Original Message- From: listsad...@lists.myitforum.com [mailto:listsad...@lists.myitforum.com] On Behalf Of John Aubrey Sent: Monday, August 11, 2014 12:31 PM To: 'mssms@lists.myitforum.com' Subject: [mssms] RE: Internet Explorer ActiveX How are you guys going to handle this? But, don't forget about Shockwave... Shockwave embeds its own version of flash that is up to 18 months out of datehttp://krebsonsecurity.com/2014/05/why-you-should-ditch-adobe-shockwave/. RE: [mssms] RE: Emory IT accidentally deploys Windows 7 to everything
IT accidentally deploys Windows 7 to everything I don't think taking the ability to do something like deploying to All System collection would fix the issue because there other ways to re-create them such as a bad WQL that adds all systems. How about step in the TS to verify critical systems such as DCs, DNS, DHCPs, and others? I guess this can be accomplished right now though a script to identify these roles on a server How about a mandatory pop-up window with a timer (hint: powershell deployment toolkit) on the client only critical infra systems? How about a touch file that pauses the deployment like Johan does, use web services and/or orchestrator to send and email, receive a response and create the file? How about a SCCM deployment tab where critical windows roles (DC, DNS, etc..) like OS selection in the requirement tab of a program? Default is set to skip those critical roles unless selected. There are hundreds of innovative ways that can be provided currently to prevent such critical infra systems from getting imaged improperly at 'run-time'. But it's hard to engineer against little or no training, full rights to everything, and a long work day. All or any combination of those can turn a 5 second lack or attention to detail into a oops. Note it may be possible to engineer something using SCORCH and status filter rules... but you have to be careful about licensing then. If you read the fine print of the Scorch licensing... it was meant for orchestrating server actions. and the way Microsoft interpreted it was that if you did something based on status filter rules from CM and sending instructions back to CM; you are affecting a client--i.e., potentially every single client in CM that you have. So pony up the $ for the expensive licensing for every single client. You may be able to negotiate something; but be aware of that if you are looking at status filter rule triggers and automation via scorch. It could end up costing you more than if you sent your people to training instead! [mssms] Microsoft Security Advisory (2953095)
New Security Advisory released yesterday http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/security/advisory/2953095 that affects all versions of Microsoft Word. Usual deal ... Remote Code Execution that takes over the computer with the rights of the logged on user. It can be exploited via the usual email attachment, or, more worryingly, The vulnerability could be exploited when the specially crafted RTF email message is previewed or opened in Outlook while using Microsoft Word as the email viewer. There is a fix-it available which configures the Microsoft Office File Block policy to prevent the opening of RTF files in supported versions of Microsoft Word. Microsoft is currently aware of limited, targeted attacks directed at Microsoft Word 2010 [http://www.plymouth.ac.uk/images/email_footer.gif]http://www.plymouth.ac.uk/worldclass This email and any files with it are confidential and intended solely for the use of the recipient to whom it is addressed. Sadly not. Be nice to see the more recent versions. Where's wikileaks when you need it? From: listsad...@lists.myitforum.com [mailto:listsad...@lists.myitforum.com] On Behalf Of Mote, Todd Sent: 18 March 2014 14:39 To: 'mssms@lists.myitforum.com' Subject: [mssms] OT: RDCMan 2.x? Now that we're starting to have more 8/2012 devices deployed, I've run into an issue with Microsoft's Remote Desktop Connection Manager 2.2. It's current version limits the number of connections to these OSes to about 5 at a time, or you get a connection error 3334. Kind of a drag when you have lots to connect to at a time. I've seen screenshots of MS folks that have version 2.5, and have heard that version 2.8 was seen in Vegas recently at the Sharepoint conference. Anybody have any info about RDCMan greater than version 2.2? There is a work around that apparently works, by using editbin.exe in VS to edit the rdcman.exe to add /largeaddressaware to it, but wanted to see if I could find out about a real solution rather than a hack. RE: [mssms] Update stuck at 'Downloaded Update'
The SCCM client logs should give you the update ID of what's stuck downloading. Check that update in the SCCM console to see if you've downloaded all the sub-components of the update. That's usually the cause. From: listsad...@lists.myitforum.com [mailto:listsad...@lists.myitforum.com] On Behalf Of Stephen Owen Sent: 14 February 2014 16:49 To: mssms@lists.myitforum.com Subject: [mssms] Update stuck at 'Downloaded Update' Hi guys, In my 2007 environment, I'm seeing a number of clients with their update status stuck at 'Downloaded Update' with no indication of when the installation will take place. I have this deployment set to ignore maintenance windows, and yet they still just kind of hang out there, not doing anything. Prodding it with Software Updates Deployment Eval and Scan cycles doesn't seem to do anything either. I've confimed that the updates are installed and distributed out to the DPs, Status Messages from SCCM don't give me very much either for these systems. Any advice on where to start? My colleague who is off sick atm knows much more than me as I've not had any direct involvement for the last year. I remember us having to buy a 3rd party certificate when we got rid of Intel's SCS Server and moved to SCCM. CHUCK's 2013 LEAVE CARD (I've kept count) ... Was 24.5 days off this year. RE: [mssms] AUTO: Chuck Spalliero is out of the office (returning 01/06/2014)
Chuck had something like 60+ days off in 2012. The number of his OOO's coming into the list prompted the in-joke. 2013 has been very modest for our Chuck. [mssms] RE: HOTFIX: An update is available that adds support for Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2 to System Center Configuration Manager 2007 Service Pack 2
See they updated the KB article on this one to say that the update for Windows 8 SCCM Clients also applies to Windows 8.1 SCCM Clients: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2861663 Note This update affects only those platforms that are included in the supported platforms list. The client part of KB 2750782 (SCCM2007AC-SP2-KB2698619-x86-ENU.msp) was originally released to provide support for Windows 8. However, it also applies to Windows 8.1 clients. It doesn’t make that clear in the KB or in the article (kind of suggests it without spelling it out) that this adds the client hotfix to SCCM. [mssms] RE: HOTFIX: An update is available that adds support for Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2 to System Center Configuration Manager 2007 Service Pack 2
Ah, right. It doesn’t make that clear in the KB or in the article (kind of suggests it without spelling it out) that this adds the client hotfix to SCCM. Makes it sound like it’s just a hotfix to add supported platform tick boxes to those particular areas and not a client hotfix. I get it now. It’s actually the latter ☺ From: listsad...@lists.myitforum.com [mailto:listsad...@lists.myitforum.com] On Behalf Of Daniel Ratliff Sent: 28 October 2013 16:56 To: mssms@lists.myitforum.com Subject: [mssms] RE: HOTFIX: An update is available that adds support for Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2 to System Center Configuration Manager 2007 Service Pack 2 Yes, this is that update. We are in a desktop transformation project at a client and happily deploying task sequences to rebuild the OS. We have seen some failures and on investigation these systems all were laptops and all had their lids down before they booted into PE. The boot started into PE and hung at the logo page. Opening the lid resumes the screen but Windows is remaining hung at that point. Restarting completes the task sequence as expected. Now I know that the obvious solution is to tell users to keep the lid open but I wondered if someone had seen this and fixed? Oh, these are Lenovo laptops Jason DISCLAIMER: This is a PRIVATE AND CONFIDENTIAL message for the ordinary user of this email address.
