Well. There is no substitute for reading the full manual.
Read it from cover to cover at least once.

There is no point in asking questions untill you have read this.

After actually checking, you're right, it's not in the standard
nagios-plugins distribution...I guess I was thrown off by the fact that
the banner on the help output states that it's part of the
nagios-plugins package:

check_solaris (nagios-plugins 1.4.9) 1.0

Check memory/swap space on local server.

I'm pretty sure Luc is a lurker on this list, so maybe he'll speak up

[Nagios-users] Problems with adding my own command

2007-11-27 Thread aragonx
Hello all,

I am trying to add a command. I would like to have a link on the
hostgroup page that would allow me to run a bash script on each host in
that hostgroup. Passing the script the hostname as a command line
parameter.

Everything seems to work fine. I have a link on the hostgroup page that
says what I want. When I click on it, I get a new page that says just
about what I want. When I click on commit however, I get: "An error
occurred while attempting to commit your command for processing."

I haven't done much C development so I don't have a real good idea as to
what I should be doing. I have a feeling the problem is with the function
I have added in commands.c. Here is what I have done:

I have modified the following files:

base/commands.c
cgi/cmd.c
include/common.h
include/nagios.h.in
include/nagios.h

In commands.c under function void check_for_external_commands(void)
else if(!strcmp(command_id,"RUN_CMD_ON_HOSTGROUP"))
command_type=CMD_RUN_CMD_ON_HOSTGROUP;

In commands.c under function void process_external_command(int cmd, time_t
entry_time, char *args)
case CMD_RUN_CMD_ON_HOSTGROUP:
process_hostgroup_command(cmd,entry_time,args);
break;

In commands.c under function process_hostgroup_command(int cmd, time_t
entry_time, char *args)
case CMD_RUN_CMD_ON_HOSTGROUP:
run_cmd_on_hostgroup(temp_host);
break;

In commands.c added function run_cmd_on_hostgroup(host *hst)
   char extcmd[200];
#ifdef DEBUG0
printf("run_cmd_on_hostgroup() start\n");
#endif

/* Run the script. */
strcpy(extcmd, "/usr/local/nagios/bin/hostgroup.bash ");
strcat(extcmd, hst->name);
system(extcmd);

#ifdef DEBUG0
printf("run_cmd_on_hostgroup() with command as %s end\n", extcmd);
#endif

return;
}

in cmd.c under function request_command_data(int cmd)
case CMD_RUN_CMD_ON_HOSTGROUP:
printf("Distribution script run on all hosts in a
particular hostgroup");
break;

case CMD_RUN_CMD_ON_HOSTGROUP:
printf("Hostgroup
Name:");
printf("",hostgroup_name);
printf("\n");
if(cmd==CMD_RUN_CMD_ON_HOSTGROUP){
printf("");
printf("\n");
}
break;
case CMD_RUN_CMD_ON_HOSTGROUP:

/* see if the user is authorized to issue a command... */
temp_hostgroup=find_hostgroup(hostgroup_name);

if(is_authorized_for_hostgroup(temp_hostgroup,¤t_authdata)==TRUE)
authorized=TRUE;

break;
In cmd.c under function show_command_help(cmd)
case CMD_RUN_CMD_ON_HOSTGROUP:
printf("This command is used to copy files to all the
hosts in the host group.\n");
break;

in common.h
#define CMD_RUN_CMD_ON_HOSTGROUP144

In nagios.h
void run_cmd_on_hostgroup(host *);  /* Distributes
files to all hosts in a host group */

As always, any help would be appreciated.

Mark,

I encountered the same issue, spent a while poking at NDO and found that
tuning down the table trimming options in ndo2db.cfg helped reduce the
time of this symptom by a third or more, depending on how short of an
age I chose. This also cut the user cpu time (taken up by mysqld) by
about half, as well as the storage and I/O overhead. YMMV, of course,
but I found that at this point I don't need to keep the data in those
very busy tables longer than an hour or so - it'll be *very* useful of
course when I have an interface that can use that data, but for now,
keeping it for only a short period is fine.

IANA db expert, but from what I can tell and as Ton suggests, the table
indexing doesn't appear to be optimal - I see a high
handler_read_rnd_next count, which usually indicates unnecessary table
scans). As far as this particular symptom goes, though, I think it
might be the indexing in conjunction with the re-sending of retained
status data that's the culprit here (see the blurb on 'Do not resend
retained status to NDO' on
http://altinity.blogs.com/dotorg/2007/09/nagios-patch-da.html)

> We are monitoring:
>
> # Active Host / Service Checks:272 / 329
> This doesn't seem like enough to bog down a Dell PowerEdge 1855 with 2GB

For comparison, I'm running one of our hosts (Nagios 2.10, ndoutils
1.4b6, MySQL 5.0.22 on CentOS 5, active hosts/services 504/2771), on a
PowerEdge 1850 w/ 2GB :)  Without any ndo2db tuning, I was seeing around
a 30-second wait while the status.dat was being recreated (presumably
waiting on ndomod). After tuning, I was able to drop that time from ~30
seconds to between 6-8.

One caveat - if you do choose to trim those ages, you'll note a longer
pause after the next Nagios restart, as NDO goes about dropping older
rows. Once that's complete, be sure to optimize the relevant tables to
reclaim the unused space.

HTH,

[Nagios-users] check_mem plugin for solaris 9

2007-11-27 Thread Sudhir Damle
Hi All,

I am using Nagios to monitor many machines, some of them are Solaris 9.
There is a requirement for memory monitoring.

Most of the plugins on NagiosExchange are perl scripts using 'meminfo' or
'free' commands which are not available on Solaris box.

Any idea how to accomplish this check? Any idea, comments, suggestions
appreciated.

Thanks,

Thanks for the config snippets. While you included host and service templates,
you didn't include any definitions that actually use those templates. Make sure
that those definitions don't overwrite any of the template definitions related
to notifications. Also note that your service template only specifies
notifications for CRITICAL status.

Do you have notifications enabled in nagios.cfg (enable_notifications=1)? Do
you see notification attempts in nagios.log and in your postfix logs? When you
tested your notification commands from the terminal as the nagios user, did you
test them exactly as nagios would call them, including substituting appropriate
values for the macros?

Hi, Nathan.

- From the point of processing performance numbers I can't help you, but I
can offer my situation. I used to run a lot of SNMP checks, but every
now and again I would get bottlenecks with bandwidth. This would then
cause the checks to timeout and fail.

I switched to using NRPE and I haven't had any issue like that since.
Checks seem to be done much faster. This is my experience using it in
regards to limited, or constrained, bandwidth across networks. I do both
CPU load and disk space checks and definitely prefer the disk check
across NRPE.

I am wondering if anyone has done a performance comparison of NRPE vs.
SNMP for simple things like CPU load and Disk Space? I want to know
the performance impact for the machine being monitored.

Thanks

Nathan

[Nagios-users] notification by mail not working

2007-11-27 Thread Pablo Escobar
hi all

I´m really desesperate because I dont know which other config file I should
look.

My mail server (postfix) is working because if I run

$> ps aux | mail [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I get a mail.

I have this two files:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] nagios]# cat contacts.cfg
define contact{
 contact_name   pablo
 alias  pablo
 service_notification_period24x7
 host_notification_period   24x7
#service_notification_options   c
#host_notification_options  d
 service_notification_options   w,u,c,r
 host_notification_options  d,u,r
 service_notification_commands  notify-by-email
 host_notification_commands host-notify-by-email
 email  [EMAIL PROTECTED]
}

*
*

[EMAIL PROTECTED] nagios]# cat contactgroups.cfg
define contactgroup{
contactgroup_name   sysadmins
alias   sysadmins
members pablo
}

both included on nagios.cfg

[EMAIL PROTECTED] nagios]# cat /etc/nagios/nagios.cfg | grep contact
# groups, contacts, contact groups, services, etc. I guess it would
# separate from host and contact definitions...
cfg_file=/etc/nagios/contactgroups.cfg
cfg_file=/etc/nagios/contacts.cfg
# host/contact/service configuration files. Setting this to 60 means

I have also verified that the "host-notify-by-email" and "notify-by-email"
commands that are defined on commands.cfg work if I run them on a terminal.

and I am using this service and host templates:

define host{
namegeneric-host-gen

notifications_enabled   1
event_handler_enabled   1
flap_detection_enabled  1
process_perf_data   1
retain_status_information   1
retain_nonstatus_information  1
register0
contact_groups  sysadmins
check_command   check-host-alive
normal_check_interval   3
max_check_attempts  3
notification_interval   0
notification_period 24x7
notification_optionsd,u
}

define service{
nameservicio-generico-gen
normal_check_interval   3
retry_check_interval5
max_check_attempts  3
notification_interval   0
notification_period 24x7
check_period24x7
notification_optionsc
active_checks_enabled   1
passive_checks_enabled 0
parallelize_check   1
obsess_over_service 0
check_freshness 0
notifications_enabled   1
event_handler_enabled   1
flap_detection_enabled  1
process_perf_data   1
retain_status_information   1
retain_nonstatus_information  1
register0
contact_groups  sysadmins
}

everything on the web interface seems to work and I havent found any error
related to mail on logs but I can´t get mail notifications when a service or
host fails.

¿¿any clue about what I´m doing wrong??

many thanks in advance for any help and sorry for a so long mail :)
Pablo

Then you likely need something more sophisticated than a timeperiod
definition such as having that process kick off the submission of an
external command to nagios. You would need to think about how nagios is
supposed to know that the problem service really isn't a problem and
work from there.

Fortunately, the OP indicated that it was a _scheduled_ process so it
appears hoop-jumping isn't necessary.

[Nagios-users] Nagios alerts when nagios server reboots

2007-11-27 Thread Monappallil, George
Hi all,
my nagios instance falsely reports host down alerts for all the servers
that it monitors (check_host_alive) when the server (that hosts nagios)
comes back up after the reboot.
The server in question is a vmware guest. Why does this happen ?

I second Marc's solution which I think is the most efficient way of dealing
with that situation ie. timeperiods.

Create a timeperiod that excludes the problem time and assign that as
the check_period for the services.

[Nagios-users] Nagios not reporting alerts and keeping the soft-state

2007-11-27 Thread ilohp
I have some remote stores, only with a ping service
checking the server
After a connection failure, nagios see the server
down, but never send the email alert. I believe is
because it never made the second attempt to reach the
HARD state, and always stay on soft state. It was
working well before on the 2.x version, running 3.0b7
now
When you check the interface, the status is always
soft with only one attempt. Configuration is below.

This is nice of you to share your documentations. However, this is not
really what I am looking for.

I am not really interested in proof of concepts. Those documentations
that would show the actual setups that are in use would be useful for me
to start off with.

I saw that cfengine is mentioned for management of the Nagios
configuration
files across the servers. It seemed interesting. Using SCP with keys
was
part of my original plan. This may change or it would not.

Any other information about how a failover can occur for a slave when
the
master goes down?

What about through SVN? I've never done it, but I just thought of it
when you mentioned centralizing it. I keep track of my Nagios
configuration files this way, but it wouldn't be hard to add NRPE into
the mix so that you can checkout the latest set of files.

Just an idea...

Robert,

Affecting the apache user will affect *all* instances of apache in our
infrastructure (regular website, as well as BackupPC's apache, etc). I
know this seems like a broken setup -- it is. :) We're in planning
phases for better machine user/group management, but creating a one-off
machine in terms of users/groups is difficult at the moment because the flat
files
are automatically spawned by some, err... "feature challenged"
scripts. I'm pushing hard to get this changed, but for now, I can't change
change a user's group membership without it affecting that on every
machine.

I realize I could remedy this situation by running apache as
www-data:nagios on our nagios server, but my question isn't so much about
making it work -- it's about whether nagios is broken in the way that it
deals with creating its command pipe or whether I've over looked something
(a bug vs. my poor brain, if you will).

Cheers,
Kevin

Re: [Nagios-users] Centralizing NRPE Configuration

2007-11-27 Thread Cipriani, Robert C
I had ran across cfengine when looking to manage Kickstart configs. I will
definitely give it a look. I'm sure we have a use for it elsewhere. Thank you.

I use cfengine for that purpose. I have it copy the config from the
central server then restart the nrpe daemon. Might be a little overkill
for just this one thing, but it's useful for all sorts of stuff.

[Nagios-users] NRPE bug ??

2007-11-27 Thread SCHAER Frederic
Hi,

I'm currently using NRPE to monitor a few things, and it looks like I'm facing
a bug :

depending on the plugin output, the end of output is... "strange". Some plugins
with lots of output behave correctly, others with just a few words are not OK

A typical output is like this one :

# /usr/lib/nagios/plugins/check_nrpe -H gate02 -c nrpe_listcmds

check_users

check_load

check_hda1

check_zombie_procs

check_total_procs

check_firewall

check_blackholes

check_varparts

check_slash

check_quattor

nrpe_listcmds

ç¿ç¿ç¿¨ç¿±ç¿ºç¿Ãç¿Ìç¿Õç¿Þç¿çç¿ðç¿ùç¿ç¿

ç¿ç¿ç¿&ç¿/ç¿8ç¿Aç¿Jç¿Sç¿\ç¿eç¿nç¿wç¿ç¿ç¿ç¿ç¿¤ç¿ç¿¶ç¿¿ç¿Èç¿Ñç¿Úç¿ãç¿ìç¿õç¿þç¿ç¿ç¿ç¿"ç¿+ç¿4ç¿=ç¿Fç¿Oç¿Xç¿aç¿jç¿sç¿|ç¿

ç¿ç¿ç¿ 翩翲翻ç¿Äç¿Íç¿Öç¿

Not cool... If I add to the bash plugin an << echo -e "\0" >> at the end, the
output is clean again... however, I add some "echo" or echo -e '\n' , the
output still contains garbage.

Would this be a bug ? Or would I be doing something wrong ?

I tried changing the linefeed format (dos2unix and unix2dos) : with msdos
linefeeds, the output cannot be read, and unix liefeeds don't change my output.

These strange chars at the end of the output always look to be the same for a
given plugin, but they differ between plugins. I'm wondering if I'm seeing the
remainings of the 1024bytes output limit... ?

I'm using nrpe-2.8.1-1.i386 and nrpe-plugin-2.8.1-1.i386 on an SL4.4 i386 box...

Thanks,

Frederic

2007-11-27 Thread SCHAER Frederic
Hi,

Yes. I mean : I have several lines of text printed in the service state
information CGI, and these lines were separate script output lines...
But for now, LONGSERVICEOUTPUT is completely not working in
notifications for me - I'm going too try beta7 very soon to see if this
is better...

You will not receive alerts unless you specify the appropriate contact
group for a service or host.
You can modify your base templates to include the esadmins contactgroup
for a group of hosts based on those templates.

Always best to reply to list, it makes my outlook rules correctly file
your message in the right folder, and it serves as completeness for
those who might be following the conversation and also will help future
users help themselves by searching the mailing list archives (thus
saving future mailing list bandwidth).
