Re: [neonixie-l] What's the best approach for this?

2023-10-06 Thread Richard Nicewonger
Hi martin,

Congratulations, that’s a terrific calculator to receive as a gift! The
high anode voltage required for the display
is generally provided by an inverter powered by the DC input. From the
pictures, it looks like there is a transformer
just behind the display. That is likely for the inverter. Look for small
electrolytics around that transformer, especially
ones that have high operating voltage values. All those should be replaced. The
yellow ones in front of the display are
probably OK if all digits are visible. I love these kind of calculators and
hope you get this one in working condition.

All the best,

Rich

[neonixie-l] seeking info on obsolete IC's

2023-06-26 Thread Richard Nicewonger
Hello everyone,

In my obsession with Nixie calculators, I recently acquired a Dietzgen
ESR-1 which is a rebranded Casio FX-1.
It required the usual replacement of the power supply HV caps and a pass
transistor and cap in another regulator circuit.
After all that, it is still 95% DOA. This is an early calc using “stone age”
JMOS logic where a “1” is @ -24V and “0” is GND.
These IC’s are now more than 50 years old and mostly unobtainable. In order to
troubleshoot anything, I would love to get
any data sheets that could identify IC functions. I have seen some of the more
common ones online, but there are a few
from NEC such as uPD129C, uPD173D, uPD312C, uPD358C, and from Toshiba HD3113P
that seem to be elusive.
Could there be any members that have knowledge of these IC’s or the calculator
itself? Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Rich N.

Re: [neonixie-l] identification request :unknown edge lite displays

2022-05-10 Thread Richard Nicewonger
Hello,
I have a big old General Radio automatic capacitance bridge that uses
these type of displays plus some that display special characters.
I’ve been looking for some circuits/plans to make a clock with these. When you
finish your clock project could you post your design plans?
Thank you very much.

Re: [neonixie-l] New find!

2022-02-22 Thread Richard Nicewonger
When RCA was in its heyday, they promoted their "RCA Institutes” correspondence
courses in electronics. As part of the course in

TV/radio servicing, the students had to assemble their own test gear. This was
one of those items. It is actually a rebranded Eico

model 430 oscilloscope from the late ‘60s. I know this since I have the model
435 which appears similar but has better bandwidth.

I have always liked the looks of this series of test equipment that Eico made
during this period compared to their earlier designs.

They are simple to use and relatively easy to fix since they don’t have
sophisticated features like triggered/delayed sweep. It looks

like you’ve scored a nice one. Good luck and enjoy!

Thanks for that link Bill. It definitely needs TLC - a lot of it! I’ve never
seen that model before, but if you look closely you’ll see that it doesn’t use
LED’s but rather Panaplex displays (my favorite). Wish it wasn’t rack mount,
cheaper and in better shape or I might have went for it just for those
displays. Another interesting thing I noticed: rear label shows Eldorado as a
subsidiary of E-H International. Never heard of ‘em but I guess they had
acquired Eldo at some point. My only Eldo is model 1607 counter/timer. This
really helps toward my curiosity about that company and I am grateful.

Re: [neonixie-l] El Dorado Frequency Counter Restoration

2022-01-31 Thread Richard Nicewonger
Hi Everybody,

El Dorado made some pretty nice counters back in the day, a few of
which I have owned at one time or another.
This example seems to be in better condition than most you see now. I don’t
know if there ever was an El Dorado counter
that didn’t use Nixies. Perhaps some members could recall more info.

Re: [neonixie-l] Now it's time for some "real" neon!

2021-12-08 Thread Richard Nicewonger
Greetings everyone,

I thought the group might appreciate my latest toy. It uses genuine
Beckman displays SP-351 & SP-353 to show 4-1/2 digits.

Data Precision was located in Wakefield, Mass. until sometime in the 80”s. Does
anyone know any details about the company or

its demise? I haven’t found a whole lot of info online. I also have its little
brother, the rechargeable 245, which uses the .3” high

Beckman displays and even sports a lanyard for carrying! Will show that one
soon. They also made a frequency counter with a

family resemblance to the rest of their line. That one uses LED readouts and
the one I have is in parts-only condition unfortunately.

Re: [neonixie-l] Sperry Planar Display

2021-10-28 Thread Richard Nicewonger
Hello all,

Does anyone know the significance of those Sperry displays having the
part# etched as “EX-332” rather than the more familiar “SP-332” ?

I was wondering if the “EX” might mean “experimental” but I’ve not seen
anything like that on Panaplex displays before. Any ideas?

Re: [neonixie-l] Looking for a PANAPLEX display driver module

2021-09-26 Thread Richard Nicewonger
Hi Terry,

I have never seen it done with this type of “hard forming” dipped
encapsulation.

There might be the chance of dissolving the innards along with the epoxy!

I’ve seen epoxy that fills a mold to cover parts and I think that is dissolvable

but I can’t be sure. In any case, this is going to require more investigation
so I

can choose the best course of action. Thank you for the suggestion.

All the best,

2021-09-26 Thread Richard Nicewonger
David,

Yes, that is exactly what I have thought about and it is what it is.
Sometimes I get lucky with things like this and sometimes not.

I also have a Sony Sobax calc that is, for the most part, a doorstop. There
isn’t a single IC that I can identify - and there must be

near 100 of ‘em. All it does is read “0” on all Nixies. I have a better shot at
fixing the Victor! I thank you for the advice.

Re: [neonixie-l] Looking for a PANAPLEX display driver module

2021-09-26 Thread Richard Nicewonger
Hi Martin,

I’m sure Burroughs used (and maybe designed) these modules since the
Panaplex was their creation.

I have a schematic for a similar Victor calc model 18-1721 and mine is 18-1441.
They are mostly identical

except the 1721 has scientific functions and somewhat different logic but the
display circuitry seems to

follow what I have in mine. The thought of a module swap had occurred to me and
I will probably do it if

I can’t get a replacement. The thing is, it would only verify if the part is
indeed bad - not how to get a

replacement if it is. Group member Ira also suggested using discrete parts.
There is a hint of what is

inside the segment driver portion of the module shown on the schematic but not
all 9 parts are ID'd.

I’m going to wait a little while for a possible replacement and, failing that,
I will probably try the part swap

to at least verify my suspicions. Thanks to you and Ira for all the good
suggestions.

All the best,

Rich

[neonixie-l] Looking for a PANAPLEX display driver module

2021-09-26 Thread Richard Nicewonger
Hello all,

Does anyone have any knowledge of these packaged electronic circuits
(PEC’s) that

are used in VICTOR calculators with PANAPLEX displays? The VICTOR part number is

shown in big numbers and the smaller number's significance is unknown. I have a
unit

that is missing the top-left segment (f segment) in all digit positions.
Tracing backwards

and comparing to working circuits, I believe the problem is originating at one
of these PEC’s.

There are 8 of these used to drive each segment plus the DP. Each also has 2
digit

drivers for the 16 digit display. This means each module serves three functions!

Does anyone know of a source or have any that they would be willing to sell?

I only need one but would consider multiples. I also would consider a boneyard
calc that

uses these. Thanks in advance for any help that you can offer.

Re: [neonixie-l] Newbie would like to introduce himself

2021-09-02 Thread Richard Nicewonger
Hi Bill,

I have a little story about that piece. When searching online a few
weeks ago, I saw the ad from Andys Arcade that featured that part.
The ad claimed only one left so you know I quickly place the order. A few days
later I get an email from Andy telling me that the item was
previously sold and inadvertently not removed from the site. Geez what a
disappointment! Yes, that display seems to be really rare compared
to other displays that are sought after. I haven’t been able to even find a
mention of an SP-737 anywhere online, except for Andy’s. Will keep on
looking but I want to thank you for your effort on my behalf. All the best!

Hi Bill,

Thanks for the welcome! Yes, I agree with you about the “sickness” and
I’m probably not getting any better!
It’s bad enough trying to find parts that are generally considered unobtainium,
but you bring up another point
when trying to find a manual (either owner or service) that may be harder to
locate than the parts themselves.
One example of that is my search for Sperry Panaplex display SP-737. This
3-digit bugger has one anode for
the left digit and another common to the other two digits. This is used in a
Marlin calculator for the two least-significant
digits as well as polarity and error indicator. Sooner or later it will
probably appear for sale at a price equal to an
ounce of gold! Such a deal! All the best.

[neonixie-l] Newbie would like to introduce himself

2021-08-04 Thread Richard Nicewonger
Hello everybody! I'd like to introduce myself to all. My name is Rich
Nicewonger and I am a retired electronics technician. I worked in the field
of power and energy measurement instrumentation for 40 years at a leading
NJ company. Gas discharge displays have always interested me. In fact, the
company I worked for used Beckman displays in some of their products! My
particular interest is not necessarily clocks (although I do have a nixie
version) but more toward calculators and test equipment using these type of
displays. I am always a sucker for more of these that may require some work
to be operational. Sometimes I shoot myself in the foot because of the
difficulty in finding replacement parts for 50+ year old equipment,
especially displays! I hope to get some insight from knowledgeable folks
here. So, looking forward to having some interesting and useful
conversations.
My best to all,

Rich
