On the back of the bulb it isn't hard to get to, it's the dark green wire
but it runs through a dozen connections before actually grounding to the
frame. I can't tell you exactly where because my bike's DSPO got in there
with some duct tape and a bit of lamp cord. I would guess the stock
location is under the tank maybe. If you had a meter it's a quick
continuity test between the plug and the negative battery cable but that
may not help in your situation.

Did you go to Victoria BC? I grew up in Tacoma (Family moved to Nor
Cal when I was in 8th grade) and when I did my trip I got on the Ferry in
Port Angeles. Funny thing is - it's the same exact ferry from the
mid-70's. I have a picture of me standing in the exact spot as when I was
in maybe 6th grade. I took my family on the same trip a year later and
have a picture with the family in the same spot. Great memories. I'll
have to dig up some of the pictures from those trips. It really is pretty
in Western Canada and the weather is great for about 2 months of the year.

Anyway - keep heading east in Canada as long as you can. I think it's
prettier than the equivalent parts of the US and you'll probably not make
it back any time soon.

[Nighthawk Lovers] Re: Ol' Yeller rides again

2015-07-21 Thread 'Hawaii Sean' via Nighthawk Motorcycle Lovers!
Canadian bears must like vehicles. When I took my family through BC we
were on a 90 kilometer dirt road, I thought the sign said 9 kilometers but
it truly was one of the best parts of our trip. Anyway, we rounded a
corner to find a brown bear sitting in the middle of the road. He looked
at us like what are you doing here got up and ambled into the bushes. It
was amazing and my kids were really excited. I wanted to jump out and take
pictures but my wife stopped me - I guess she didn't want me to get eaten.

On my motorcycle trip on Victoria BC island I had a cougar, or so a friend
from there told me it probably was, run across the road about 100 feet in
front of me. Very cool and got the pulse rate up. I didn't think about
stopping that time

The 650 has glass fuses and does sit up front behind the horns. But it is
the brown plastic bulkhead plugs that attach to the mess of brass bars in
the back of the unit that are the problem IMHO. Along with the fuse holders
snapping from corrosion and vibration.

[Nighthawk Lovers] Help!

2015-07-21 Thread Tommy Hill
Ok, so my headlight (high and low) went out on the 1 mile ride back to the
apartment. I pulled the cover to check fuses and they all appear ok. I pulled
three out to look closer and put them back in. Now NO lights (head, neutral,
or running), no start...nothing. Horn works and signals work. I have 1 hour
before dark and a small thunderstorm just getting here. Quick suggestions??

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Help!

2015-07-21 Thread James O'Gorman
You may have a bad ground on the headlight which is why both high and low went
at the same time.
With the fuses - were they pulled while the power was on? They could have
popped when you pushed the fuse back in.
If you are umm... Confident... That there are no shorts, then you can jump the
fuse until you get home. Not recommend of course. It is impossible to know for
sure without using a meter.

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Help!

2015-07-21 Thread Kyle Munz
You have a 650? The plugs on the back of the fuse block can come loose,
also a fuse can look good but still be bad. You really need a multimeter to
test them. Also check the right hand controls and your ground wires.

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Help!

2015-07-21 Thread James O'Gorman
And the no- start. If your ignition still has power, you can always pop the
clutch just like in a car. It can get hairy, but if you are in a pinch... Don't
drop the bike when your doing it. Straddle the seat and get it rolling
downhill. Then pick you feet up, put in first gear and release the clutch. This
will spin the engine. Then pull the clutch back in just like when you release
the start button. Then you can proceed as normal.

try pushing with help, but have my doubts. I think no ignition, now.

The starter button disables the headlight when pressed and starting the
motor, but that's just a guess. Push starting can work without the hill but
it ain't fun, especially in Florida heat, and you'll look ridiculous while
pushing it. Put it in 2nd, pull in the clutch, run as fast as you can, jump
onto the seat without falling over or dropping the bike and pop the clutch.
If it catches pull the clutch back in before it stalls.
