[NTG-context] PDF/A-3a attachment support query
Hello list,
The following document fails PDF/A-3a validation. It passes without the
attachment.

The key F is required but missing.

entries, wrong value types, etc.).
The document contains hidden, invisible, non-viewable or
non-printable annotations.
The document contains annotations or form fields with ambigous or
without appropriate appearances.
The document does not conform to the PDF/A-3a standard.
Done.
My understanding is that 3-a should support both pdf and non-pdf
attachments. This fails in a similar manner with both pdf/a-3a-validated
files and with plain text files. I also tested with verapdf, and it also
rejected the document with an attachment.
Is this my error, or is it not yet supported?

[NTG-context] two issues with inmargin attachments
Hi Hans,
I have the following sample, using latest beta from 2019.11.14 17:07:

The default location seems to be "text", but when specified as option it
prevents the attachment. The general configuration for location may be
different, but in that case it seems impossible to use "text" for a
single attachment.
"location=inmargin" seems to place all /FileAttachment annotations on
the same place (when from the same line, they have the same /Rect), as
shown in the excerpt:

[NTG-context] new beta
Hi, I uploaded a new beta. Apart from some fixes, the main change in lmtx is that on windows most (a few exceptions) of the mechanisms that interface to the operating system support the internal wide character model which should make the lot more robust for file names, environment variables, command line options etc that (at the tex/lua end utf8) have characters other than ascii. Another improvement in lmtx is support for ancient type 1 fonts (like the type 1 lucidas) but that's more 'being complete' than a 'real need' (when such fonts are used wiping the cache is needed). Both these (lmtx only) patches can have unforseen (by me) side effects but nothing that can't be fixed fast. When you use \type in the argument of another command there are some
limitation in TeX and this is another one.
The reason for the space is that TeX adds a space after a command when
it reads the argument which will in this case appears in the output.
When you use \type outside of the footnote this won't happens because
\file in the argument is treated as a backslash followed by four single
letters but in this case TeX handles it as the commend \file.
Below is a simple example which demonstrates the behaviour, with the
\detokenize command (nothing you need in a normal document) you can
visualize TeX's behaviour. The second example shows another problematic
characters.

In a longer document setting \asciimode at the begin can be the better
solution.
The reason why setting \asciimode in the \footnote doesn't work is that
TeX uses
uses the meaning of a special character it had when it read the
argument, i.e.
when TeX reads the text "%APPDATA%\file.txt" the percent sign acts as
begin of
a comment and everything after it is ignored. As a result the asciimode

can't work because the text has already disappeared.

Why not just use asciimode?
To understand why \footnote{\type{...}}} doesn't work, you need to
understand TeX's "digestive system". \type{...} (and asciimode) work by
modifying the catcode tables. However, they are are used inside a
footnote, the argument of \footnote is parsed according to the catcode
table which is active when footnote is passed. Under the default catcode
table, % is a comment, so when you type:
\footnote{\type{*\$%
}}
the argument of \footnote is `\type{*\$}`
So, if you want \footnote to "see" the %, you need to activate a catcode
table where % is a letter. So, the simplest solution is to use \asciimode.

I've been tinkering with this problem. It's kind of frustrating not having
a right solution for this.
After trying and failing to the last solution published by Hraban on
2018-02-12, I tried to implement my own approach, from the other way
around, I mean: not trying to implement notes as marginal material, but to
implement the *marginalia* as some type of notes. A different type, apart
from footnotes, with their own counter, etc.
Below, a MWE, with some caveats:.
1. This is a poor quality hack. I'm not a developer.
2. If notes are too long, they clash with each other. I tried to understand
the options that would allow me to move them up or down, according to the
Wiki (https://wiki.contextgarden.net/Command/inmargin), but they don't seem
to do anything, or I don't understand how to work with them. But if there
is actually a way to manually instruct \inmargin to move up or down, it
should be easy to make it work as an optional third argument, for example.
3. The counter introduces some horizontal space that I cant manage to
remove except by introducing manual negative \hspace. The MWE doesn't
include that space, to display the isse.
4. There are probably a ton of issues I have not thought about, but this
seems to work for this project I'm working on, at least.

[NTG-context] Extracting a column from an array in lua
Hi,
Probably this is a silly question…
In lua, I have an array named t which is determined in a piece of lua code,
having (say) two columns and I want to extract for example the first column of
t and call the new array tt.
In Matlab, Scilab and friends, this can done by saying tt = t[:,1].
Is this possible in lua?
For the moment I have something like this, but I think it is not a good
approach:

I tried searching for that file but didn't find it, there's also no "vscode"
script listed when running "mtxrun --script"
I installed using texlive on windows, is the script only shipped on the
standalone installation?
If it's possible to create a fully fledged ConTeXt extension for vscode with
these files, I would try to create it. I'm not that experienced with
javascript, but I think I should be able to get some stuff done. You could also
utlize some code from the existing LaTeX workshop extension (
https://github.com/James-Yu/LaTeX-Workshop ), since it features a pdf preview
with working synctex.

[NTG-context] formatting index entries
Dear list members,
In my book I am creating an index. I know that there are commands for
formatting index entries, like:

if I want the word 'īga' to be printed in slanted type. I also know that we can

Dear all, I use the following code to make test. To make the same height blank spaces after the problems, I use \vfill before \column. The problem is that the second \column creates extra blank page. But, without the second \column, the height of blank spaces of the second column are different. Is there a way to make the blank spaces height same while not to create a blank page? This is a feature request or wish:
I would be glad to have a module (e.g. "fakefields") as a drop-in replacement
that overwrites the field commands (\setupfield, \definefield, \definesubfield,
\field) with a version that doesn’t create form fields but just \inframeds that
look the same.
\setupfield[setup name][options][keyval options] would map to
\defineframed[setup name][keyval options]
\definefield[name][type][setup name][content values][default content] would map
to \defineframed[nameField][keyval options] and inherit (how?) from "class
name".
Don’t know how \definesubfield would work and how to setup the relationship to
a special radiobutton type.
\field[name] would finally call \nameField{}
\setupfields doesn’t work anyway.

That's another intriguing approach, Andrés, thank you. The approach faces some hurdles. First, the template file (main.tex) is written in ConTeXt, so it never sees the YAML variables, nor can it be used to interpret pandoc's conditional expressions. Second, moving the \completecontent macro out of main.tex and into Markdown (e.g., 01.md, being the first chapter) so that the conditional expression can be evaluated using pandoc mixes content with presentation logic. Modes are a good approach in this case because the "context" command can take a "mode" command-line argument. This provides presentation controls that neither the YAML nor the Markdown need consider. Adding presentation logic to the ConTeXt template (i.e., introducing \startmode and \startnotmode into main.tex) is acceptable because ConTeXt is wholly responsible for the appearance of the final document. See: https://wiki.contextgarden.net/Modes This then allows development of command-line arguments from shell scripts to control how the document is presented when built, which is a little bit more flexible than maintaining YAML variables. I began to learn ConTeXt since april and begin to write real
ConTeXt documents (mostly presentations) since june.
Please don't ask me too much.
My main request is not to provide LaTeX compatibility but
to provide not only one command of matrix but full set of commands
for various kind of matrices if possible.
Personally, it is true that I think LaTeX compatibility is useful
but it is not main issue.

Let me provide an alternative point of view. The commands that you are
suggesting are encode the _visual_ meaning: pmatrix is a matrix with
parenthesis, bmatrix is a matrix with brackets, vmatrix is a matrix with
vertical bars, and so on. One could also use _semantic_ commands: in my
documents, I define a command called MATRIX for typesetting matrices, and
DET for determinant of a matrix. So, I simply type
\MATRIX{1, 2; 5, 6} and \DET{1, 2; 5, 6}, etc.
Now, depending on the audience, I sometimes map \MATRIX to pmatrix and
sometimes to bmatrix. I can simply copy paste the code without worrying
about notation.
If you take this view, then the predefined matrix:parentheses,

I'm attaching the test file, with the .the log and ...-error.log files.
Please note that to reproduce the error with the context version of texlive
2019 the first lines must be uncommented due to a bug in the newer version
of tikz.
I suspect that the problem is with context because same file works with
context from texlive 2018 (which has the same pgfplots version) and an
equivalent latex version works with lualatex.
Could you suggest any workaround? If not I'll file a bug with pgfplots.

I browsed through the mailing list to see that bibliographies are not
that easy. ;-)
I think I found a solution by providing a "year" in my database. That's
good enough for me.
But as I collect my internet citations with zotero I always get a
urldate for all internet entries. I think that giving the urldate is
better than insert a publication year as nobody knows how long a website
was present and when it was published for the first time.
Is it possible to insert something like "last accessed on the internet
on -MM-DD" in that field automatically if no publication year is
provided but a urldate?

I suppose you mean the APS setup when NO date field is given
("to be published" for an article, "in press" for a book, and
"unpublished" otherwise)?
You can redefine the setup btx:aps:nd (no date) to give something else,
but you might have to go further not to get empty parenthesis.
A better solution, using the APS specification is to have a correct
database. Maybe a different publication type category might be more
appropriate.

(parts of) the columnsets mechanism is somehow broken at the moment,
since some of the examples there are not showing what they are supposed to.
the mkii mechanism has been replaced by a new one but it's not
completely compatible (these placements are actually for floats and
spans were just a special kind abusing that mechanism)
Can this be confirmed? Is there a plan to get it to work soon again?

[NTG-context] Which math font for LinLibertine family?
Hi all, the font family LinLibertine (ConTeXt from TL2018 and older) does not contain any math font. On the file type-imp-libertine.mkiv there is a (disabled) line joining math from times family. Is the times math the best for LinLibertine or would you recommend me something else (from the design point of view)? What is the best way how to add math to the existing typescript? (I would like to avoid changing the file from the installation.) [NTG-context] No menu bar option for Adobe Reader
Hi,
I use the "Hide menu bar" option extensively in Adobe Acrobat Reader to get a
cleaner interface. To this end, I usually hack lpdf-mis.lua after a ConTeXt
upgrade to create a \setupinteractionscreen[option=nomenubar] switch.
I wonder if it would be possible to add this little feature to the source code.
Perhaps it can be useful to others as well.

are not available in generic.
i suppose that you can use one of the hooks that adapt fonts beforehand:
just add features after the font gets loaded but before it gets passed
to tex (it's character.mathkerns)
(at some point i'll probably add such stacked kern definitions in
context but it depends on how the gyre fonts evolve)

This message tells that something wrong with your settings (I assume the
spaces in above strings are side effect of mail system). The 'cons'
function that you use allows to add only one element to a list (see
Emacs Lisp documentation). I'm not familiar very well with Emacs Lisp
but tested a bit and think this should work:

I'm not absolutely sure about 'TeX-run-command' (code of AUCTeX uses
'TeX-run-TeX' for TeX stuff). You may test and use 'TeX-run-TeX' instead
of 'TeX-run-command'. Also you may change the 'nil t' to 't
(context-mode)' if you what to edit (expanded) string and only want to
see these entries for buffers set in 'context' mode.
And please check the binary name and it's location (I didn't play with
LMTX yet).

Dear Otared, I checked the both cases in the terminal and found that there is no problem in the installation. It call “mtxrun" in right place depending on MKIV or LMTX. Actually, files which doesn’t need files in texmf-local folder are compiled well in both installations. The problem is occurred when the file tried to read files in texmf-local folder. In that case, if it is compiled well in MKIV, then it had a problem in LMTX and vice versa. I didn’t try to use a symbolic link. Since I don’t have any problem to compile files under LMTX so far, I will use LMTX mainly. So I’ll left my previous problem for a while. Thank you for your help. PATH=/context-osx-64/tex/texmf-osx-64/bin:/context-osx-64/bin:/context-osx-64/tex/texmf-osx-64/bin
either in your engine file (using TeXShop), or when typesetting from the
Terminal, then you don't need to use mtxrun --autogenerate in order to typeset
a file with LuaMetaTeX: you can just have
/context-osx-64/tex/texmf-osx-64/bin/context myfile.tex
in this way you can use any mode you wish.
Or have I misunderstood the issue you are asking about?

I’d like to compile it in LMTX mode or in MKIV mode without running "mtxrun
—geneate” when I change mode.
Set path to absolute path of mtxrun in the setting doesn’t help.
Actually, it is not a problem of ConTeXt.
I’ll try it once more.

Hi Dalyoung,
If this can be of any help, here is what I did in order to install LuaMetaTeX
on MacOS in order to use it with TeXShop:
1) I downloaded from
http://www.pragma-ade.nl/install.htm
the version of the installer for MacOS and installed a folder named
context-osx-64 at an appropriate place (actually at /context-osx-64)
2) Then I did
sh install.sh
in that folder, and once the download was finished I replaced the directory
texmf-local with a symbolic link to my texmf-local directory (which sits
somewhere else)
3) In the directory
~/Library/TeXShop/Engines
I created a new file named LuaMetaTeX.engine containing the following three
lines:

PATH=/context-osx-64/tex/texmf-osx-64/bin:/context-osx-64/bin:/context-osx-64/tex/texmf-osx-64/bin
/context-osx-64/tex/texmf-osx-64/bin/mtxrun --autogenerate --script context
--autopdf "$1" --purgeall
4) Then when opening TeXShop, I can choose from the scroll menu which shows up
on the top left of each a tex file, the engine LuaMetaTeX (or I can set it as
default in the Preferences) in order to typeset with LuaMetaTeX engine.
5) When I need to update the installation I just run again
sh install.sh
from within the directory /context-osx-64
(The symlink to my texmf-local is not destroyed).
6) If I need to typeset a file from a command line in Terminal, then I need to
say
export
PATH=/context-osx-64/tex/texmf-osx-64/bin:/context-osx-64/bin:/context-osx-64/tex/texmf-osx-64/bin
before typesetting myfile.tex by saying
/context-osx-64/tex/texmf-osx-64/bin/mtxrun --autogenerate --script
context --autopdf myfile.tex
(Note that the above command should be issued when one is already in the

Sounds like you've got it working, but just to provide an alternative
that should* work, according to the sources:

[compoundhyphen=-,%Or, to keep the \setuphyphenmark
rightcompoundhyphen=-,% configuration mentioned in Taco's link:
leftcompoundhyphen=-]%`*compoundhyphen=\compoundhyphen`
That does require you to replace all the hyphens with `||`, which it
understandably sounds like you want to avoid, but it can be good for
someone like me who likes that explicit markup, or for someone who needs
more control over which symbols go where (I'm using for Esperanto --
slightly non-standard -- a vertical tick mark for the inner-line and the
left but the hyphen for the right). The main benefit, though, is that
you can do the same thing for line-breaking hyphenation if you need to
change that, just drop the `compound` in the keys.
* I've been running into it working for the first break or two but than
switching back to the default for the rest of the document, and haven't
been able to track down why. Though it might have something to do with
me still using the ridiculously out-of-date 2016.05.17 because I haven't
gotten around to overriding the Gentoo package manager yet...

sure, it's a harmless patch and if it works ok ...
I'm not sure I can attach the actual PDF as it's a recent Elsevier pub, but I
managed to manually craft one from the ConTeXt hello world using qpdf
--stream-data=uncompress --object-streams=disable and vim, and I'm attaching
that. The equation references work in PDF readers but stop working after
passing through \copypages[Hello-world-weird.pdf][][interaction=yes].
