[NTG-context] Margin notes
I am trying to compile a 2-year-old mkiv document with the latest beta and am getting an error on the line \inleft[style=bold,stack=continue] Two years ago, stacking of margin notes was still experimental, so I'm guessing something has changed since then. What is the correct way these days to typeset margin notes? If you are not using all predefined font styles, you could set your monospace, sans, serif, or whichever style you aren't using to the font you want to use and use the predefined command (e.g. \sf) to access that font. You need to load a font which contains Japanese characters. In order to
create documents, which can be written in any international language,
you need to make a typescript, which loads fonts for all languages (if
that is really what you want).
You can specify what Unicode range should be typeset in what font...
Here is a typescript I used for a Japanese document, which also
contained Korean Hangul, Vietnamese and the International Phonetic
Alphabet. You can use it as a reference.

Have you looked at http://www.wazu.jp/gallery/Fonts_Devanagari.html for example? Ligatures are an essential feature of devanagari, so I expect there is no font which doesn't support ligatures. I'd be interested to see whether you manage to successfully use devanagari with context. (I vaguely remember a mailing list posting that devanagari is not supported...?) It seems harmless but (a) I have a conditional font change that may repeat hundreds of times over the course of a document and it clutters my terminal, and (b) it’s a warning after all, so everything is not as it is supposed to be. What’s it telling me, and why? Philipp I'd be interested as well. Maybe my document just grew too large, but I am having quite major memory issues it seems. Trying to compile my document takes almost 10min and half-ẁay through Thunderbird is telling me that its scripts are timing out and asking whether I want to stop them. (A few pages less and the document compiles in 15 secs.) I have two 2GHz processors and 1GB ram. The only frequent error I get from context is that the bodyfont can better be defined globally. Will this help with memory issues? Is there anything else I should do differently? I am writing documents in English/Japanese. If you want to include English text, you probably need to define your own typescript (or use simplefonts), because most Japanese fonts have terrible Latin fonts... I can probably help you, if you tell me what exactly you need. If you're just typesetting Japanese text, you will need \setscript[hanzi] to enable linebreaks... Depending on your needs, p(La)TeX may be a quicker solution, if you can afford to miss out on the benefits of ConTeXt. But that's just my opinion... [NTG-context] LuaTeX error after update to ubuntu 12.04
After updating to ubuntu 12.04, my shouts of joy were smothered by the following !LuaTeX error: cannot find OpenType font file for reading () == Fatal error occurred, no output PDF file produced! mtx-context | fatal error: return code: 70 I ran mtxrun --script fonts --reload, updated to the latest context version, ran luatools --generate and context --make and still am presented with the above error message after 10-15 minutes of paralysing processing. The compiling seems to run as always, until it reaches the last page, at which point the computer freezes and takes about 10 minutes to present me with the error. Deleting the cache worked, thank you! The first run on my book successfully compiled after 7 mins., subsequent ones now take 15 seconds (which used to be a stable 25 sec before the upgrade). In ubuntu 12.04 all font packages are renamed to fonts-*, rather than ttf-* or otf-* etc. I thought that running mtxrun --script fonts --reload would fix lookup problems, but it seems that you might want to clear the cache completely. Still, esp. with the added speed benefit, there is no reason to hold back the upgrade (from my point of view). So here, there are really three things that I want to achieve. I need to
be able to get a list of all of the sections wherein a given chunk is
referenced using \chunk, a list of all the sections where a section of the
same name is defined, and finally, be able to tell in which section the
first occurrence of a chunk is defined.
How can I accomplish this?
Have you had a look at the reference manual? Chapter 13 on descriptions
will show you how to define something like
\definedescription[chunk][location=serried,titlestyle=\bf]
which you then should be able to use as
\chunk[name1]{This is a name}
For referencing (chapter 12), use \in for pointing to the relevant
section, \at[name1] for a page number.

All that is needed is information ... you can have a look in the
sort-lan.* files. I also suggest that you check with Dalyoung
(hak...@me.com) as he keeps an eye on cjk issues. For instance korean

The rule i before n is stronger than the rule ka before ga. I guess
this is the same in, say, German, where 'essen' should come before
'Essen', but 'Essbarkeiten' before both of them, e before E being the
weakest ordering rule...
Is this the use of
local cs, CS = utfchar(replacementoffset + 1),
utfchar(replacementoffset + 11)
in sort-lan.lua?
Once I know how to enable a particular sorting pattern for a register I
can probably figure it out by myself. How would I do that?

I have leaved through the ConTeXt and MetaFun manuals on the search for examples of graphics resembling the attached file which I created in TikZ. I was wanting to switch to something more native to ConTeXt, but haven't quite found a way of realising it in ConTeXt or MetaFun. Maybe someone would be so kind as to point me to the right section in the manual. All I want is to define text boxes (of a fixed size) to fill them with a background colour and (centred, typeset) text. Do I need MetaFun for that, or should some table/framed text environment in ConTeXt be able to do that? You need to make sure that a language is set and patterns are loaded.

This also affects parentheses ( ) and other punctuation , . but I haven't been able to reproduce those in a minimal example. The question marks above should illustrate the problem, though. I use a Korean unfont as main fonts and an English fonts as fallback font
using the following type script file which is made by the help of Hans and
D.H. Kim.
You may set fonts similarly.
Korean fonts contained Chinese glyph(not all of them) and Japanese glyph, we
don't have any problem to use them.
I hope that it may help you to find a solution of your problem.

Thank you, always. At the moment, the baseline of the first line of the
margin note aligns with the baseline of the main text line. Even in the
general case, I think it would look better to have the top aligned.
In the margin ruby, this presents a slight problem as a second ruby will
now look as though it belongs to the next line. Is there a way to align
the top of the lines, or is there a hack that just shifts a margin note
by a few pts? (There is a low flag, but no high flag, I think...)

[NTG-context] CJK hyphenation/line breaking
Korean has spaces, so I guess I am only asking for CJ, but I was wondering if it is possible to enable line breaking, i.e. cheap hyphenation for CJ(K). I can only speak with certainty for Japanese, but at least here the rules are quite simple. There is no kerning for Japanese characters, so when the line is full it spaces all characters evenly (preferably as close together as the font allows) and dumps everything else to the next line, no matter if it is in the middle of a word (a concept not quite as well defined as in languages with spaces anyway). I can do this by hand if absolutely necessary, by inserting fake spaces \ \!, but this gets quite tedious, and it seems line breaking for CJ(K) would be nice to have. I remember it working about a year and a half ago(?)... At the moment I have \setcjkmainfont to a Japanese font. How do I specify more fall-back fonts, e.g. for Korean script. Also I may need to use a different font for IPA (phonetic characters). In case an ID is required for attendance, I think I'll go for \setCJKmainfont, representing Unicode support and simple way of choosing fonts across scripts, which is a deal maker for me... When compiled with MkIV, space between f and l is quite big and doesn't
look very good. Is it a bug?
Spacing between letters when treated as individual variables is always a
bit fishy. In this case the math mode suppresses the fl ligature, which
seems to be present in the font, whence the spacing is off. Something like
\starttext
\math{{\it flow}_1}
\stoptext
will help ConTeXt treat it as text and improve the spacing (and in this
case make use of the fl ligature).
Define \def\flow{\text{\it flow}} if you just want to say
\starttext
\math{\flow_1}
\stoptext

Currently I am using something like

to define theorems, lemmas, etc.
Sometimes a theorem or lemma will have its own name (e.g. Yoneda Lemma),
and I find it slightly cumbersome to write something like
3.1 Theorem (Yoneda Lemma)
3.1 Lemma (Yoneda)
3.1 Lemma (Yoneda Lemma)
and was really hoping that
\startlemma[text={Yoneda Lemma}]
would give me the desired
3.1 Yoneda Lemma
but it doesn't. I would like to keep the whole setup the same and only
change the text for this instance. Is there any way to implement this
except for defining a whole new enumeration for one
theorem/lemma/proposition by
\startenumeration[text={Yoneda Lemma},location= ... ]

Thank you for the quick reply, it is getting quite close. I guess the
trick is to define an enumeration for one-off use and use title= to
fake text=. The only problem is that the number sits between text and
title. So to still be able to use \starttheorem alongside
\startproclaim{Theorem}, I would need to know how to either place the
number after the title or how to place it before the text.
I'd be interested in knowing how to do both.
Also, I have problem with the numbering mechanism and the
numberstyle/textstyle/etc.

With the current solution, I still have the problem that the numbers of
\starttheorem and \startproclaim{Theorem} are on the (resp.) left and
right side of the text/title and I don't know how to change that.
I still find \starttheorem[text={Special Theorem}] (and that is called
key-val-input?) the more intuitive, though. Maybe it would be worth
considering to enable such inputs - it seems many other \start...
\stop... environments allow such key-val-inputs.
The annotation module looks good from afar, I just can't find it on
contextgarden nor on tlcontrib...

[NTG-context] Comma spacing in math mode
I don't know if anyone feels the same, but I'm not happy with the spacing of commas in math mode (pictures attached). For instance, typesetting H^1(X,F), the comma seems to be closer to the F than to the X. Equal spacing on both sides or setting the comma closer to the X are I guess a matter of taste (inserting a \neghairspace after the X achieves the latter). In any case, I would kind of prefer equal spacing. Also, it seems odd that adding a negative space \neghairspace does not change the length of the total formula - I had expected the modified one to be slightly shorter...? On a related issue, the spacing for lists, e.g. (0,0,...,0), is not satisfactory. LaTeX provides a command \dotsc for dots between commas (and other commands like \dotsm, \dotsi, \dotsb). I don't know if all of these are necessary, but \dotsc and its cousins are not defined in ConTeXt and both using \ldots or just ... give unsatisfactory results. (It is also curious that the spacing after the first comma and the spacing after the last comma in (0,0,...,0) is evidently different...) Personally, I think I favour something approximating (0, 0, ..., 0) and I find \ldots is spaced too widely, ... too closely, and in any case, the spacing of the dots doesn't match with the spacing of the commas. [NTG-context] Non-stretching or slow-stretching spaces?
I was wondering if there are any kind of spaces which (partly) fix the spacing between characters. For example, typesetting Chapter 1, I would like to keep the space from stretching at the same rate as the surrounding spaces (just like ck ligatures in old German texts would be prevented from stretching, or the space in do n't (sic) in early 20th century American texts). I currently use \ to prevent a line break ~ to prevent extra space after a period \, \; etc. as fractions(?) of the normal space (i.e. they change at the same rate as the normal space when stretched) Are there any other types of spaces I should be aware of? I would be most grateful for any comments, especially concerning the existence of a slow-stretching (or non-stretching) space... [NTG-context] SciTE ConTeXt
Hello, I tried to follow the PRAGMA document for setting up SciTE to run with ConTeXt. The Tools menu seems to recognize that I am trying to process a ConTeXt file and the syntax highlighting seems to fit as well. However, when trying to Compile or Build, SciTE tells me mtxrun --autogenerate --script context --autopdf --pdf myfile.tex sh: mtxrun: not found Exit code: 127 When running mtxrun from the terminal or from the shell (by entering sh in the terminal) it works fine. My $PATH variable is set to find mtxrun (and context). How come SciTE can't find it? Many thanks. Severin P.S.: Does the --autopdf option try to automatically open the output? Well, I resolved the ruby issue. After playing around with a minimal example, I noticed that \usemodule[tikz] was causing all the trouble when trying to load the environment. Not knowing what was wrong I've now updated to texlive '10 and everything works as expected, including tikz. [NTG-context] ConTeXt editors (vim?)
Dear all, I don't know how you all compile your context documents. I have used Winefish until now, but it is no longer maintained (last stable version 2006) and so I was thinking of switching to something else. I have looked at vim and it looks promising. There is a compiler file from Aditya (2006) which uses texexec. I was wondering if anybody would be interested in a vim compiler for mkiv (maybe somebody has one already?). Other suggestions are also welcomed. The myenvir.tex contains the line \usemodule[ruby] (and other
fontfallbacks) which works fine in a simple file, but fails to be loaded
in the component, yet I don't seem to be able to load it by pointing to
either the project or the environment... The product and project files
are, with the exception of name changes, copied almost straight from the
documentation; all files compile fine if the three lines above are
commented out.

Ok, this worked now. After reloading the fonts with mtxrun I was able to find the fonts. Before I had always tried to context --generate *after* mtxrun --script font --reload (as suggested on http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Fonts_in_LuaTeX) but then ConTeXt can't find the fonts anymore. Same with luatools, running luatools --generate destroys the information from the font reload. (Why?) In any case, I can work around this by always reloading the fonts after generating context or luatools... Again, many thanks. Any ideas? Simplefonts normalize the font name but this is not the problem, why you don’t get any output is because context can’t find the fonts. You can check if context finds the fonts with “mtxrun --script font --list --all --pattern=ipa*” and “mtxrun --script font --list --all --pattern=sazanami*” Maybe it helps when you put the fonts in the tex directory itself ($TEXFM/texmf-fonts/truetype/) and refresh the database with “luatools --generate” and ”mtxrun --script font --reload”. - TrueType font KanjiStrokeOrders as KanjiStrokeOrders_v2.014.ttf
- a bunch of *.tfm, *.vf, and *.pfb files for a font family called
Wadalab, of which half of them seem to be only suited for JIS
encoding, whilst the other half is suited for Unicode.
I hope you don't find it too basic a question, but the font system is
not very transparent and I'd be most grateful if someone could outline
how I would write the preamble in order to set up the CJK in a way I
can use them for the \setcjkfont commands and (as an exercise)
redefine the Latin font to Palatino.
I envision something like
\usemodule[simplefonts]
\definefontsynonym[Palatino][uplr8t]
\setupbodyfont[Palatino,11pt] % See 1.
\definefontsynonym[WadalabMincho][???] % See 2.

1. Calling upon the name like this doesn't change anything.
2. How do I know which *.tfm/*.vf/*.pfb file to call here? I think the
*.pfb files are Type1 for JIS encoding and thus are not of interest,
but there are still about 30 *.tmf files for Unicode to choose from.
3. I have an OpenType font with this font name, but again, calling it
like this does not work. I have tried to
$ export OSFONTDIR=/path/to/font/directory
and then
$ mtxrun --script fonts --reload
$ context --generate
The files are recognized by mtxrun, but, again, the font names don't
enable simplefonts to load them correctly.
4. This somehow seems to work. This is the font name (at least it's
not the filename) and the font is TrueType. However, trying to load a
different font here, like Sazanami Mincho, does *not* work, although
it, too, should not go unnoticed during compilation. Could this be
because of the space in the font name?
I'm grateful for any sort of answer.

The simplefonts modules provides a fontspec inspired interface to use
the mechanism in a simpler way:
