[NTG-context] New STIX font version
Hi all, you might be interested in hearing that there is a new there is a new version of the STIX fonts (since 1h ago) - or rather a beta version: 1.1.0-beta1. See: http://sourceforge.net/projects/stixfonts/files/STIXv1.1.0-beta1.zip/download The beta period will remain open until December 1, 2011. - Thus, one has still 5 months time to comment on the bugs. (Or are that two moths? With STIX ETA one never knows ...) As reminder: STIX fonts (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/STIX_Fonts_project) are a large collection of Times-like math fonts, created by several publishing houses in a rather slow process. A year ago, 1.0 was relased and now with 1.1b1 is finally released. Seemingly, one can now use it directly such that one does not need the XITS fonts anymore. (Cf. http://typophile.com/node/71171) From the release notes: What is new in this release? The original Version 1.0 STIX was packaged as 29 distinct font files. Version 1.1.0-‐beta1 provides the same set of glyphs packaged as a set of 4 text fonts and 1 symbol font. This new packaging will facilitate the use of the font on more desktop applications, and will specifically allow the symbol font to be used in recent versions of the Microsoft Word Equation Editor. In addition, an update was made to address compatibility issues between the font set and the Windows PostScript driver. Besides those changes, some a (very) few glyphs have been added and some smaller changes have been done. [NTG-context] Context using LuaTeX - distribution packaging question
Hello, for openSUSE there are now beta TeX Live 2008 packages available (http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Publishing/). [By Werner Fink, who does also the normal openSUSE packages.] The question is how the ConTeXt with LuaTeX should be best handled. By default, there is no luatex-cache and no (luatex) format. Of cause a user can do: export TEXMFCNF=/usr/share/texmf/web2c # export TEXMFCACHE=somewhere luatools --generate --verbose luatools --ini --compile cont-en but in principle I would expect that the distribution does this already, which saves the TEXMFCACHE per user and makes texexec --lua working without requiring to run first all the other commands. Questions: a) Is the TEXMFCNF environment variable necessary or can this also be read by a config file, which is overwritten by the environment variable? Which scripts/executables make use of that environemt variable? b) Is is possible -- as with kpsewhich -- to have a global cache for the format + global directories - and local directories which have then a higher precedence? I mean like: A global directory cache incl. the format files plus if the user creates a $HOME/texmf tree a user $TEXMFCACHE which contains the hashes of the user directory but such that luatex still finds the formats in the global directory? Tobias Burnus wrote: a) Is the TEXMFCNF environment variable necessary or can this also be read by a config file, which is overwritten by the environment variable? Which scripts/executables make use of that environemt variable? I just saw that this might be possible in theory, but it fails due to the missing symbolic link resolving: if input.env(instance,'TEXMFCNF') == then local ownpath = environment.ownpath() or . ownpath is here /usr/bin and obvious finding texmf by moving up in that path does not work. In function environment.ownpath() one need to add in if lfs.isfile(b...exe) or lfs.isfile(b) then ownpath = p break some check whether b is a symbolic link and if it is, one follows the symbolic link until one finds the real binary; then one can use that path for ownpath. I tried to find some Lua routine which does so, but I couldn't find one ad hoc. (I have also the vague feeling that the algorithm fails for /some/directory/which/is/not/in/PATH/luatools.) I tried lfs.symlinkattributes() (whose mode should be link) plus posix.readlink, but I failed to get this work. (lfs.symlinkattributes and posix are not found.) Hi Hans, Hans Hagen wrote: you use an old luatools / luat-inp.lua; I updated now luat-inp.lua from the latest experimental cont-tmf.zip, however, that does not help. a) luatools.lua does not use luat-inp.lua (and luatools.lua is up to date in TeX Live) Thus updating does not help. (Besides, without the texmfcnf file, luatools.lua cannot use any other file as one cannot search for it.) b) Following UNIX symbolic links does not seem to work under Linux. I played around with luat-inp.lua and it does not work. c) Werner asks: Why is the KPSE library not used? I have to agree - KPSE uses the compile-time defaults for the path and thus should provide the correct default TEXMFCNF directory. Afterwards, I'm fine using a non-KPSE method. How about using KPSE as backup method if it doesn't find a config file otherwise? For luatex itself (contrary to luatools) there is no problem as luatex uses the compile-time path and finds the texmfcnf file. Back to (b): The symbolic links support in luat-inp.lua seems only to work if your directory is a symbolic link but not if the file is a symbolic link, e.g. foo/bin - /usr/local/bar-bin then for foo/bin/file doing chdir(foo/bin) makes sense as then currentdir() prints /usr/local/bar-bin but this does not work for /usr/bin/luatools - ../share/texmf//luatools.lua as the chdir(/usr/bin) makes no difference. One really needs posix.readlink support, which is not in my texlua. Or, alternative 2, if path ends in bin, try ../share/texmf as my old patch does. Or one indeed uses KPSE: kpse.set_program_name('luatex') local kpse_result1 = kpse.find_file(input.luaname,'cnf',true) local kpse_result2 = kpse.find_file(input.cnfname,'cnf') I'm also open for other suggestions. Hi Hans, Hans Hagen wrote: luat-inp.lua is merged into luatools in order to make in 'stand-alone' OK, I missed that. By the way, unless I screwed up completely, the new luatools you have sent me work: LuaTools | variable SELFAUTOLOC set to /usr/bin LuaTools | variable SELFAUTODIR set to /usr LuaTools | variable SELFAUTOPARENT set to / LuaTools | variable TEXMFCNF set to {$SELFAUTODIR,$SELFAUTOPARENT}{,{/share,}/texmf{-local,.local,}/web2c} LuaTools | skipping configuration for /usr/share/texmf/web2c from /home/tob/luatex-cache/context/c67bf06401a0e1a39f3ee04c60209dc5/trees/e027248d6557d124c703335e8a95ecd5 The symbolic links are not resolved, but $SELFAUTODIR/share/texmf/web2c/ is the correct directory. b) Following UNIX symbolic links does not seem to work under Linux. I played around with luat-inp.lua and it does not work. hm, maybe taco knows .. I think there is no way round but posix.readlink. However, it might be not needed as the new, just sent luatools works. c) Werner asks: Why is the KPSE library not used? several reasons: I agree about the KPSE shortcomings, however, just for finding texmf.cnf KPSE should be good enough. (OK, finding texmfcnf.lua does not seem to work well as the lua extension means that web2c is not searched.) For luatex itself (contrary to luatools) there is no problem as luatex uses the compile-time path and finds the texmfcnf file. hm, but since luatools is ran using texlus (which is luatex) the same should apply I think the algorithm used to find the texmf.cnf file is different and thus a different file is found. Your algorithm never checks $HOME/texmf/web2c where a user could have put his file. For pdftex $HOME/texmf/web2c has a higher precedence than /usr/share/texmf/web2c. I assume that the same thing is true for luatex. In any case the luatex binary contains the following string: /etc/texmf:/etc/texmf/web2c:/var/lib/texmf/web2c:{~/texmf,!!/etc/texmf,!!/var/lib/texmf,!!/usr/lib/texmf,!!/usr/local/share/texmf,!!/usr/share/texmf}/web2c Using KPSE the same string seems to be used to check for the config file. But luatools uses a completely different method. As long as the user does not have its own texmf.cnf there is no problem. (Should be the case most of the time.) However, as soon as (s)he has, luatex and luatools access different files! - make sure that luatools is run by texlua and not by lua itself That seems to be the case - my lua does not know about lfs and that works with texlua. - don't use a stub, just rename luatools.lua to luatools and mtxrun.lua to mtxrun (so, no texmfstart like extra stubs which would slow down things considerably) That is done differently: luatools.lua remains like that, but /usr/bin/luatools is a symbolic link to luatools.lua. That works for my minimal example, though I have to postprocess the *.bbl file as BibTeX converts longline into long% line which of cause gives the wrong result here. [NTG-context] Chinese, cyrillic questions
Hello all, I have a document which which is predominately English, but contains (currently) also 8 Chinese characters and 2 Cyrillic words (in the Acknowledgement section). First, regarding Chinese: I use: \enableregime[utf] \useencoding[cyr] \usemodule[chinese] \mainlanguage[uk] \language[uk] I would expect having mainlanguage != chinese would turn all enummerations to arabic numbers. However, I still have -, =, etc. in the table of contents, in enumberation etc. Is there a simple command to turn this off? Secondly, regarding Cyrillic: Currently, I follow loosely wiki.contextgarden.net and use \useencoding[cyr] \definetypeface [russian] [rm] [serif] [computer-modern] [default] [encoding=t2a] \def\RuText#1{{\switchtobodyfont[russian]#1}} On my system (TeXLive 2007 as provided by SUSE) bitmap fonts are used as the seemingly needed cm-super fonts are not included; the system, however, has cmcyr type 1 fonts. As true ignoramus regarding fonts in TeX and the dozens of Cyrillic encodings, I failed to use them instead. Re: [NTG-context] embedded fonts
Hi Jörg, Jörg Hagmann wrote: I have a possibly off-topic and certainly naive question. But unfortunately it's urgent, and a systematic search would take too long: I just finished a 84 page document and sent it to the printer. They say the fonts are not embedded. Is there a switch that allows me to do that? If not, what else can I do? In principle pdftex should embed all fonts (actually only the subset of used glyphs). The only case when this does not happen is for the standard postscript fonts (Times, Helvetica, Courier, Symbol), which are by default not embedded. (Adobe used to include them with Acrobat Reader; now it does not with the nice result that Helvetica is used on Postscript printers, Arial on Windows [screen/non-postscript printers], etc.) For teTex/TeX Live (Unix): http://www.daniel-lemire.com/blog/archives/2005/08/29/getting-pdflatex-to-embed-all-fonts/ |pdftexDownloadBase14 true This will use on several computers no Times/Helvetica but the URW+ clones of these. Generally, the behaviour depends on the .map file. I have: /usr/share/texmf/fonts/map/pdftex/updmap/pdftex.map Depending of the ||pdftexDownloadBase14 setting, I have either: hv Helvetica TeXnANSIEncoding ReEncodeFont texnansi.enc This uses Helvetica as it comes with the PDF renderer. Or: hv NimbusSanL-Regu TeXnANSIEncoding ReEncodeFont texnansi.enc uhvr8a.pfb This uses the Hevetica clone Nimbus Sans L which is contained in the file uhvr8a.pfb. Hope it helped. If not: What TeX distribution do you use under which operating system? Which fonts are you using? What does Adobe Reader tell you? (On my system: File|Document Properties...|Fonts shows the fonts used by the document. It contains for instance: a CMBX10 (Embedded Subset) TT Arial (Embedded Subset) ) Tobias| ___ If your question is of interest to others as well, please add an entry to the Wiki! maillist : ntg-context@ntg.nl / http://www.ntg.nl/mailman/listinfo/ntg-context webpage : http://www.pragma-ade.nl / http://tex.aanhet.net archive : https://foundry.supelec.fr/projects/contextrev/ wiki : http://contextgarden.net ___
Re: [NTG-context] embedded fonts
Hi, [embedded fonts] I forgot to mention one thing which is easily overlooked: Your EPS (or PDF) figures also need to have the fonts embedded. If you use metapost, TeX does so; otherwise you need to instruct the program which creates the EPS/PDF to embed the fonts. [NTG-context] m-bib question: URL, DOI
Hello, I have a question regarding URLs and DOIs. I would expect that the attached example file would produce hyperlinks for the DOI and URL, but ConTeXt does not. Using \cite[doi] also produces the wrong output. For doi = 10.1103/PhysRevLett.45.566 I would expect 10.1103/PhysRevLett.45.566 and not: http://dx.doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.45.566 as output. In the reference list, the output is ok, but is no hyperlink. Whether \cite[doi][] should link to the item in the \completepublications list or to the webpage dx.doi.org and whether the link target should depend on \setupcite[interaction=start|stop], is not clear, both options have its merits. In addition, what is the way to insert # in URLs? If I don't protect them, I get a TeX error, if I use \# the backslash is printed, too. TeX is run again, reads .tuo and uses that data to produce the table of contents etc. (and produces a new .tui) As this changes the page numbers (for longer table of contents), TeXutil and TeX are re-run again. In principle TeXExec should do this automatically. Do you have a *.tuo file? Which non-zero number is returned is application dependent. The POSIX standard 2001 (Single Unix Standard v3; (c) Open Group) writes in its Shell Utilities section: The EXIT STATUS section describes the values the utility shall return to the calling program, or shell, and the conditions that cause these values to be returned. A strictly conforming application shall not rely on any specific value in the range shown and shall be prepared to receive any value in the range. According to the ISO C99 standard, the default exit code is also 0: If the return type of the main function is a type compatible with int, a return from the initial call to the main function is equivalent to calling the exit function with the value returned by the main function as its argument;[...] reaching the } that terminates the main function returns a value of 0. Since they look rather ugly in non-CJK texts and they have to match the width of the Chinese characters in the font, they are only in CJK fonts. 32 = U+20 are general punctuation. I don't see a reason for those. http://www.unicode.org/charts/PDF/U2000.pdf 37 = U+25 are box drawing characters - no idea why those should be included. http://www.unicode.org/charts/PDF/U2500.pdf 38 = U+26 are miscanllaneous symbols - no idea why those should be included. http://www.unicode.org/charts/PDF/U2600.pdf Tobias ___ ntg-context mailing list ntg-context@ntg.nl http://www.ntg.nl/mailman/listinfo/ntg-context

[NTG-context] setupheadertexts + kap/uppercase
Hello, I think I have a expand problem. I want to have \setupheadertexts[pagenumber][{\getmarking[chapter][current]}][section][pagenumber] with the chapter in \uppercase/\kaps. The problem is that adding a \uppercase or \kap before the {\getmarking} ends up with nothing and all my attemps with expand* ended up with either the same result or with a TeX error message. Using \setupheader[style=kap] (or =cap) does not work - as TeX bails out: ! Undefined control sequence. \p!doifinstringelse ...ifinstringelse #2#1}@@\war Any idea how to solve this? [NTG-context] Chinese in current ConTeXt
Hello, some remarks/errors of the current UTF-8 Chinese support in ConTeXt 2005.12.19: (For (a) to (c) see also attached file.) a) unic-chi.tex: This contains the unicode vectors for which a Chinese font will be used; currently it only covers \dostepwiserecurse{40}{159}{1}{\defineunicodecommand #1 {\uchar}} but this it misses the U+FFxx characters (fullwidth latin characters, e.g. '?' which is as wide as a Chinese character) = solution: Add \defineunicodecommand 255 {\uchar} b) Labels: lang-chi.tex contains: \setuplabeltext [\s!cn] [\v!figure={\cnencoding\cnencodedfigure}] \startencoding[uni-c] \definecommand cnencodedfigure {\uchar{86}{254}} but if I use (with UTF-8) \placefigure{}{} the figure character is not shown; however if I setup this directly, i.e. \setuplabeltext[cn][figure={\uchar{86}{254}}] , the character is shown just fine. c) Doing font switching using \SimKaiTi seems to convert back to GBK, can we have Unicode by default (at least when UTF-8 encoding is used)? Examples for (a) to (c) see attachment (UTF-8 encoded). * * * Wish for the native speakers: Please translate - Graphics/Illustration and Intermezzo(s) Question to native speakers: - \c!date={\v!month,\ ,\v!day,{,\ },\v!year}, Is this really the default? Or should this be year年month月day日? * * * Another questions: a) How to typset from top-to-bottom right-to-left using column(sets)? b) How to change the numberformat used? Hello, Hans Hagen wrote: b) How to change the numberformat used? eh ... wang lei should know ... i have to look into it (chinese supports multiple number formats) I think I found it (it is a bit burried in font-chi.tex): \startitemize[c] (or cn) gives the normal Chinese number, cc the capitalized, ec the normal Chinese number with one-character alternatives for 20 and 30 and ac the Arabic style of numbering. (For those who'd like to have a how to on using Chinese with UTF-8, I updated http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Chinese ) Attached you find the traditional characters (as used in Taiwan, Hongkong [possibly decreasing], and in China before 1955); one should provide some method to switch between those and the simplified ones defined; maybe an option for \setupchinese? Re: [NTG-context] Tables --- what is current recommendation?
Hi, David Arnold wrote: I'm wondering. If one is starting anew with Context, what would users recommend as the best choice of table environment? I think it really depends on the type of table you need. For something with a simple layout like vocabulary or address lists I would use tabulate, for complex layouts with columns/rows spanning several cells I would use the HTML-like TABLE. table(s) falls in somewhere inbetween - more flexible than tabulate but less than TABLE. (I think one should go rather for tabulate/TABLE than for table(s), but others may disagree.) For line tables the sourcefile already tells that it provides a mechanism for typesetting very large tables spanning many pages horizontally and vertically, which is experimental, undocumented. (Only) if you have a table which spans _horizontal_ several pages you should have a look. Tobias ___ ntg-context mailing list ntg-context@ntg.nl http://www.ntg.nl/mailman/listinfo/ntg-context
