Hello Seyal,

This does work but it's a bit annoying that I have to create an SVG of
just a circle and store it somewhere. I'm fine with using MetaPost,
especially if it makes this easier, but I just don't know how.

Thanks Ryszard. Those would be perfect, except I can't get them to work
in ConTeXt. I tried using the \utfchar{0x2460} but it just displays the
number 1.

I am assuming it needs a font that supports it, but I'm not sure how to
switch to a supporting font just to typeset that character and then
revert back. Is there some way to define a macro?

if you don't want to use metapost you can also use svg for background
for example:

width  = OverlayWidth,
y  = OverlayHeight/2,  ] ;
\stopuniqueMPgraphic

\defineoverlay

You may try characters with Unicode slots from U+2460 upto U+2469. They

Many thanks for your reply, Wolfgang.

I tend to forget that I have always compact fonts enabled by default.

Only enabling or disabling it, compilation with sample goes from 2.6s
when enabled to 3.2s when disabled (using --purgeall)

Without your help, I would have been never detected this.

1. You use \setupheadertexts to set the header for all pages.

2. You use \definetext to create a custom header for the chapter page
and apply it with the header-key in \setuphead.

 begin example
\setuppagenumbering
  [location=,

\setupheadertexts
  [chapter] [pagenumber]

\definetext

I notice that you addressed Wolfgang, but you also sent to the list.
One way could be to condition on being on a chapter page:

\setupheadertexts
  [\doifelsefirstsectionpage{chapter}{\userpagenumber}{}]

\setupheadertexts
  [\doifelsefirstsectionpage{chapter}{}{\getmarking[chapter]}]

[NTG-context] Re: simplify side by side Poems

Thanks so much

i also could define poem structure like this:

Using table method:
\protected\def\PoemStart#1\PoemStop
   {\bTABLE[setups=tablepoem]#1\eTABLE}
\protected\def\Beyt#1
   {\bTR #1 \eTR}
\protected\def\Misra#1
   {\bTD #1 \eTD}

\starttext
\PoemStart
\Beyt{\Misra{the first sentence}   \Misra{the second sentence}}
\Beyt{\Misra{the third sentence}   \Misra{the fourth sentence}}
\PoemStop
\stoptext

also it can be done with itemize(easier but less flexible):
\defineitemgroup[Mypoem]
\setupitemgroup[Mypoem][horizontal,two]

\protected\def\PoemStart#1\PoemStop
   {\startitemgroup[Mypoem]#1\stopitemgroup}
\protected\def\Misra#1
   {\startitem#1\stopitem}

\starttext
\PoemStart
\Misra{the first sentence}  \Misra{the second sentence}
\Misra{the third sentence}  \Misra{the fourth sentence}
\PoemStop
\stoptext

there is also another method by using buffers and lua code (part of the answer
to my question on the stack site).

[NTG-context] Re: Problem with PNG images in the latest standalone version

2024-05-24 Thread Hajtmar Jaroslav
Thanks Wolfgang for the analysis and explanation. Both pictures are "not from
my workshop" and I received them as background material. Moreover, I have
reduced them a lot today for the purpose of sending them to the conference (I
have reduced the quality a lot to reduce their size). Strangely, I have been
translating documents with this image for several years with the old version of
ConTeXt, so I was surprised that the new ConTeXt was not able to process them
as I expected. Unfortunately, it didn't really occur to me that the problem
might be with the image rather than ConTeXt, but the images were commonly
displayed on several computers (Windows and OS X), and I didn't think to look
at the log file.
Thanks again for the explanation and for the lesson, which I will certainly
remember.
Have a nice day.

are generally divided into Chinese Simplified and Chinese Traditional. This
causes Chinese Simplified Chinese fonts to fail to display Chinese Traditional.

In addition to the differences in fonts, Chinese mainland, Taiwan(china), Hong
Kong(china), etc. use different punctuation marks, expressions, etc. For example, Chinese
mainland mainly uses "", while Taiwan may use 「」 more often. and the difference
between the two Chinese expressions, such as when using labeltext.

There are also differences regarding punctuation marks between official
documents from the government and universities etc. but this is
something which can be changed in the document style.

While it's great to set up new languages at the system level, there is always
the possibility that new languages will be added for one reason or another.

As far as Chinese is concerned, it has a very large number of dialects. We
can't be fully integrated into the system. Opening up suitable interfaces to
add new languages can reduce the cost of system maintenance.

The following should work with two main languages for simplified and
traditional and local variant which fall back on both. The current
chinese language can also be changed to the fallbacks.

\installlanguage [zh-hans] [..,..=..,..] % Simplified Chinese
\installlanguage [zh-hant] [..,..=..,..] % Traditional Chinese

\installlanguage [zh-cn] [zh-hans] % China
\installlanguage [zh-my] [zh-hans] % Malaysia
\installlanguage [zh-sg] [zh-hans] % Singapore

\installlanguage [zh-hk] [zh-hant] % Hong Kong
\installlanguage [zh-mo] [zh-hant] % Macau
\installlanguage [zh-tw] [zh-hant] % Taiwan

As far as I know, the characters used (Chinese Simplified, Chinese
Traditional), the punctuation marks used (Chinese mainland, Taiwan, Hong Kong),
and the expressions used (Chinese mainland, Taiwan, Hong Kong) are basically
different between the dialects of Chinese. There is no hyphenation difference
in any dialect.

I looked at the rules for linebreaking in chinese a while ago and even
though there are a few guidelines there is no fixed list this. Many
programs let you change the characters where a break is or isn't possible.

As far as I am currently using, the context is not very well set for
localization, and there are many words in lang-txt.lua that have not been
translated into Chinese. I think that as an ordinary user, it is very dangerous
to modify information at the system level.

You're free to fill the missing entries.

Although, as a temporary alternative, we can use 'newif' or 'startmode' to add
a new condition to accommodate both Chinese Simplified and Chinese Traditional
in the same document. However, it would be nice to have support at the system
level.

I don't know if I'm getting my point right. Because of the above, I used
translation software to translate my thoughts.

To support both forms it is easier to have separate languages and
linebreaking/font settings for each of them.

As the title describes, I want to define a new language: Chinese Traditional.

But I couldn't get the results I wanted.

%%%start example

\setuplabeltext [cnt] [appendix={附錄}]

\mainlanguage[cnt]
\currentmainlanguage

I think I'm going to get the two kanji [附錄]. But the truth is, he has nothing.

So, what should I do to get it. Of course, my original assumption was that
when I changed the language, these labels, fonts, indentations, line spacing,

1. It is better to add new languages to Context itself and not just in
your document.

2. Chinese doesn't use hyphenation pattern but has rules where to break
which is enabled with the \setscript command.

3. We should use agree upon a name which is used for traditional and
simplified chinese (at the moment we have only chinese without
distinction). Is it even enough to just separate between both or do we
need separate setting china, singapore, taiwan, hong kong and macau?

2024-05-24 Thread Jean-Pierre Delange

Hi Muyik !

The first thing to check, even if it seems stupid, is to make sure that
the Traditional Chinese fonts are installed in the
/context/context-mf/fonts/ etc. folder and test this installation with
the following command:
mtxrun --script fonts --list --pattern="Chinese Font" --all (indicate
actual font name)

Don't forget the following commands to purge the font cache and restore
the database:

1. mtxrun --script cache --erase && mtxrun --generate

2. mtxrun --script fonts --reload
Then : 3. mtxrun --script fonts --list --pattern="Chinese Font" --all

Normally, the system should support the desired font after these checks.
For my part, I have no problem with Traditional Chinese or Simplified
Chinese fonts, but I haven't checked with OSX ...

I hope these few suggestions will help.

[NTG-context] Problem with PNG images in the latest standalone version

2024-05-23 Thread Hajtmar Jaroslav
Hello.
After a long time of using ConText from TeXlive installation I tried the
standalone version again.
I found that my old documents that I normally compile exclusively with the old
ConText ver: 2018.04.04 00:51 MKIV beta fmt: 2019.5.2
latest version of standalone ConText compiles smoothly, seamlessly and most
importantly very quickly and the results are the same at a glance.
Unfortunately, the only problem I have not been able to solve is that the new
standalone ConTeXt (ConTeXt ver: 2024.05.17 16:32 LMTX fmt: 2024.5.23)
does not display PNG files in my PDF document for me. If I replace the PNG
files with JPG files, the images are loaded and displayed in PDF file after
compilation.
I have also tried experimenting with the png method, see e.g.
\setupexternalfigures[directory={../texlibrary/}, method=png], I have tried a
few things, but it fails to work.
I tried to search for something, but I couldn't find anything relevant.
Can anyone advise me what the problem is or what I'm doing wrong? Is it caused
by some version incompatibility or some setting?
I apologize if something similar has already been addressed here, but I have
not been able to follow the happenings in this mailing list for quite some time.

Thanks a lot for any advice.

but what should a person do if he wants to define an equivalent of \eTD?
for example it can be useful for RTL language

\def\پسل{\eTD}
and as you said this code will not work.

You can create your own replacement for the \bTD ... \eTD pair define a
command which is delimited by another command. To do this you have to
first create a new command like always as \def\... which takes a single
argument and at the end after the argument you another command is used
as delimiter for the argument.

The argument of your new delimited command is then passed to the normal
commands for the table cell.

for example it can be useful for RTL language
such as:
\def\پسل{\eTD}
and as you said this code will not work.

The table environment collects the content of the table cell-wise which
means when TeX sees a \bTD in the input it reads the following text
until it finds the corresponding \eTD. When you put the \eTD in the
definition of another command the scanner will never find the end of a
cell and you either run out of memory or reach the end of the file etc.

Below are a few alternative solutions to simplify the input, one of them
is an alternative version of input (\startTABLE) for natural tables
which uses the same commands to separate columns as tabulate does.

 begin example
\starttext

\startTABLE[width=5cm]
\NC One one ons ksl \NC two gfjgfd oski kwo \NC\NR
\NC One wer s dft tgf \NC two gfkdsjg dfs we \NC\NR
\stopTABLE

\starttabulate[|*{2}{k{0}lw(5cm)|}]
\NC One one ons ksl \NC two gfjgfd oski kwo \NC\NR
\NC One wer s dft tgf \NC two gfkdsjg dfs we \NC\NR
\stoptabulate

\defineparagraphs[poem][n=2,width=5cm]
\setupparagraphs[poem][each][width=5cm,distance=0pt]

\startpoem

  One wer s dft tgf
  \stoplines
\nextpoem
  \startlines
  two gfjgfd oski kwo
  two gfkdsjg dfs we

I did not know about margin blocks, they are nice. But is there a way to
place them next to the \startmarginblock invocation, instead of flushing
them all either to the top or bottom of the page ?

TeX was still on page 1 to collect text when it put note 11 into the
buffer for the margin and the decision to make the break after block 10
happened afterwards.

You can control page breaks to a certain degree with the \testpage

was frustrated with the automatic placement of the notes.

I implemented a system using overlays that automatically places the

How can you put all the code in the one Lua function and not need to put hbox

In the next upload you can do this:

\protected\def\Hashtag#1%

It seems that you can´t write it with the normal keyboard.
There is an action "stroke" but it is not bound to any key.

There are two alternatives:

You can design your own keyboard layout with Ukulele:
https://software.sil.org/ukelele/

Or you could use the "Deutsch-Europa" keylayout from:
https://github.com/fiee/tools

This Layout has been designed by Henning Hraban Ramm and offers easy
access to greek and cyrillic letter, as well as ł and Ł (via option-o
l and option-o L).

Is there a whole-document switch to disable it?

You can disable hyphenation with \setupalign[nothyphenated] but this
setting alone isn't enough because now text tends to stick into the
right margin. To get better result you have to combine it with other
option like "tolerant" or "verytolerant".

The example below show also how you can use font enpansion in
combination with a lesser tolerance value to align the text on both
margins with result in smaller interword spacer than a larger tolerance
value. You can combine this with font protrusion to move punctuation
marks slightly into the margin area to have a better alignment of the
text alone.

 begin example
\setupwhitespace[big]

\showframe[text][text]

\definefontfeature[default][default][expansion=quality,protrusion=quality]

\starttext

\type{alignment: default}

\samplefile{lorem}

[NTG-context] Re: How to disable hyphenation at the end of a line?

2024-05-19 Thread Mikael Sundqvist
Hi,

since it has to do with paragraph building and not with certain breaks
it is controlled by a demerits rather than a penalty, and there is, as
far as I know, no value that explicitly prohibits a hyphen at the last
line specifically (you can set the hyphenpenalty to 1 to avoid
hyphenations everywhere). In the total demerits calculation penalties
are more or less squared, so setting

\finalhyphendemerits

to a ridiculously high value might do, for most paragraphs.

you have to fight several issues:

- parshapes being reset at the end paragraph (handled here by luametatex
context)
- parshapes operate on lines, not dimension (i might add an aletnative
one day)

- you use a bit old mechanism (checkout the luametafun-paragraphs chapter)

Now, is there a solution? It really depends on the circumstances, so
here is one.

\startuseMPgraphic{shape:2}
  SavedShape := SavedShape shifted (0,-ypart urcorner OverlayBox) ;
  SavedShape := SavedShape shifted (0,positiony("test")) ;
  fill SavedShape withcolor red;
 setbounds currentpicture to OverlayBox;
\stopuseMPgraphic

\defineoverlay[myoverlay][\useMPgraphic{shape:2}]

\setupbackgrounds[text][text][background=myoverlay]

\startshapedparagraph[mp=shape:1]%
\setupalign[verytolerant,stretch]%
\hpos{test}{!}\samplefile{tufte}
\samplefile{tufte}
\stopshapedparagraph

\stopsection

The "test" position is hard coded but should be namespaced, the ! can be
a \strut instead.

So, more thinking from the end of the text flow.

However, if one could agree on a subset (as the standard is open) and

It seems that you can´t write it with the normal keyboard.
There is an action "stroke" but it is not bound to any key.

There are two alternatives:

You can design your own keyboard layout with Ukulele:
https://software.sil.org/ukelele/

Or you could use the "Deutsch-Europa" keylayout from:
https://github.com/fiee/tools

This Layout has been designed by Henning Hraban Ramm and offers easy
access to greek and cyrillic letter, as well as ł and Ł (via option-o l
and option-o L).

I want to define a command that simulate hashtag behavior in social networks,

In other words, this command should put the hashtag sign at the beginning of

I mean like this, for example:
\myhashtag{hello world}

The fonts page is a lot better than before[1], IMHO. I would prefer the table
were 90% width rather than 50 but that is minor.

So is the plan to go through each of the main headings in the left side-bar and
make the same type of change?

I don't think that is a problem - the Wiki can be updated by others as long as
the layout/structure of the page is clear so people know where to add links.

Just a comment about typescripts.

At least in how I use ConTeXt, I live happily without having to use them.

See the following sample:

  \definefontfamily[libertin][rm][Libertinus Serif]
  \definefontfamily[libertin][ss][Libertinus Sans]
  \definefontfamily[libertin][tt][Libertinus Mono]
  \definefontfamily[cormora][rm][Cormorant]
  \setupbodyfont[cormora]
  \starttext
  \input zapf\par
  \switchtobodyfont[libertin]
  \doloopoverlist{\rm,\ss,\tt}
  {\recursestring\input zapf\par}
  \stoptext

You may define font families (which are actually typeface families).

I think they may be easier to use than typefaces.

Just in case it might help,

It might be a buggy code definition, but it may be only triggered by

I hope you have already solved the issue, but I’m afraid this is the way
testing for new bugs introduced in code works.

> ps. I included the link because there is no attach option here in the
> online-mailing-list. Sorry if it not ok.
Sorry, I no Google fan. But it is essential to provide problematic code
(reduced to a minimal sample) in the messages to the list, not just the
output.

Having the sample code, others can confirm that they are able to
reproduce your issue.

It wouldn’t be the first time for issues only arising in only on a
single installation, on a single computer or on a single OS.

The mailing list (at least when sending from a real email address)
allows attachments up to 100kb. This may be enough for most minimal samples.

I hope it helps,

In one small table he/she has an overview of the documentation for a given
topic,  :
- the few key tutorials
- link to one "main wiki page" about the topic
- the few key manuals
- the reference for commands

I'm not sure I've selected the few documents that are considered by the
community as the key tutorials.
Thanks for your feedback again.

PS : in order to benefit from mediawiki page organization features, I moved
some pages, for example
wiki.contextgarden.net/blablabla
==> wiki.contextgarden.net/Topic/blablabla

here again...
incredibly the protruding comes after creating the second script. If I only use
the libertinus fonts every thing is ok. the code definitions don't find the
cormorant font and use libertinus. But after adding the second typescript and
compiling... there comes the protruding of the first frame!!
I deleted all spaces in the definitions for the case, but no. Definitively I
can't get it right and I don't find a logical explanation.

here is the last part of my script (the prior definitions are not problematic,
since they worked when only using "miFuente". It seems to be something in
"miCorm" that produces the protruding

\starttypescript[miFuente]
\definetypeface [miFuente] [rm] [serif] [libertinus] [default]
\definetypeface [miFuente] [ss] [sans] [libertinussans] [default]
\definetypeface [miFuente] [tt] [mono] [libertinusmono] [default]
\stoptypescript

\starttypescript[miCorm]
\definetypeface[miCorm][rm][serif][cormorant][default]
\stoptypescript

2024-05-17 Thread madiazm . eoicc
thanks Pablo, but this is strange

If I reproduce your code in a new file I see the perfect alignment of the
frames. But I had changed the code in my original file as suggested by Wolfgang
and I additionally commented all lines in the "firstHeadings" definitions
following your advice and after compiling... the same result.

The strange thing is that it is only the first section that protrudes, the
other sections are right (as seen in the link). Therefore it must not be the
code definition, since in that case all sections should protrude...

Over the weekend I will slowly move my code to a new file with your code adding
a bit everytime to try to spot the moment when I get this strange behaviour and
then I will write again.

ps. I included the link because there is no attach option here in the
online-mailing-list. Sorry if it not ok.
thanks

[NTG-context] update

2024-05-17 Thread Hans Hagen

Hi,

This weekends update:

- we're currently checking the upcoming math manual and in the process
we streamline some mechanisms

- as part of the BT presentation about par passes we introduced
\toddlerpenalty but we leave it to the user to guess what that is (it
fits into widow, club and orphan penalty collection)

- we could already produce pdf 2.0 but especially when one mises with
older files, some care is needed; the inclusion 'compact' mechanism has
been cleaned up a bit and the merge interface is converging (it has to
do with efficient font sharing, cleanup and fixing of files outside our
control); when one has issues with inclusion, try with compact= (set to
nothing)

- although we're mostly done with tagging it will get some attention as
we go; it's mostly about playing safe and getting valid pdf's

- for rhaban (posters) another fancy feature was added:

\startTEXpage[offset=1ts]
\samplefile{tufte}\removeunwantedspaces\space

\startshadow[contrastcolor=red,weight=100]\blue\samplefile{tufte}\removeunwantedspaces\stopshadow\space
\samplefile{tufte}\removeunwantedspaces\space

\startshadow[contrastcolor=red,weight=100,dx=0,dy=0]\blue\samplefile{tufte}\removeunwantedspaces\stopshadow\space
\samplefile{tufte}
\blank
\setupshadows[shadowed][unit=pt,dx=.5,dy=-.5,weight=200]
\shadowed{\bfd Tufte\setstrut\strut}
\stopTEXpage

Hi Miguel,

this should work (also in the sense of a minimal sample):

  \showframe\showgrid
  \defineframedtext[FunnyText]
[frame=on, align=flushright,location=right]

  \def\FrameTitle#1%
  {\setMPtext{FunnyFrame}
{\hbox spread 1em{\hss\strut \color[blue]{\tfx Apartado #1}\hss}}}

  \define[2]\firstHeadings{%
\dontleavehmode \switchtobodyfont[miCorm]%
\FrameTitle#1%

\startFunnyText
  {\switchtobodyfont[miCorm,20.7pt] #2}
\stopFunnyText}

  \setuphead [section] [command=\firstHeadings, indentnext=no]

  \starttext
  \startsection[title=a]
  b
  \stopsection
  \startsection[title=a]
  b
  \stopsection
  \startsection[title=a]
  b
  \stopsection
  \stoptext

BTW, you inadvertely introduce the space here:

  \define[2]\firstHeadings{%
\dontleavehmode \switchtobodyfont[miCorm]%
\FrameTitle#1%

Unless you comment the space after the right bracket, it will be
included in your definition of first headings.

As for external downloads, better avoid unless required.

In any case, the minimal code should be part of your message.

Just in case it helps,

Pablo

thanks Wolfgang for your advice and sorry for being so verbose, but since the
margins are "included" in the problem I decided to put my layout there too.

I made your suggested changes and unfortunately it doesnt work, but being a bit
surprised by the margins I printed a copy of the page and still worse...

It semms that the first frame is good aligned to the specified margin, and it
is the rest of the text that gets more than 5mm extra space at the right margin
and about 2 mm less in the left margin.
I think the printer is a bit involved too, but since in the pdf we can see this
protruding I think there must be something strange to get this outcome. The
papers are for my fellows, so it is not critical if it stays so, but since I'm
trying to learn a bit more to use context, it annoys me that I don't get to
understand some problems...

thanks again for taking time

This is some other text, it will appear in a new paragraph.

Is there any macro I can place that will ignore the gap before it,
treating the next text as if it belongs at the end of that sentence?

Ex.

This is some text.

\ignorebreak This is some other text, it will appear in a new paragraph.

That way output is more like this:

This is some text.This is some other text, it will appear in a new
paragraph.

There is a similar command to ignore the next blank line or \par but you
have to add it at the end paragraph and not at the start.

In the old MkII days \GotoPar (the commands is still available) did the
job but with Luametatex you can now use the \ignorepars primitive to
achieve the result.

 begin example
\starttext

This is some text.

This is some other text, it will appear in a new paragraph.

\blank

This is some text. \ignorepars % add space before \ignorepars

This is some other text, it will appear in a new paragraph.

\blank

This is some text. \GotoPar

This is some other text, it will appear in a new paragraph.

\stoptext
 end example
