Why.

I'm desesperated.

seems that you're running mkii ...

the following is not permitted as 'note' is actually the internal
footnote class so you basically redefine footnote (footnotes happen to
be notes in the footer)

\defineenumeration
  [note]
  [definition]
  [text={Nota},style=tf,titlestyle=bf,indenting=yes]

so, use something else than note

(mkiv is not so sensitive for this as there notes are enumerations
whils in mkii only the rendering of the note is a description)

Hans

Thank you very much, Hans. This is definitely the reason of that error.
The conclusion is that we always should define command with non-english
names ;-)

And yes, I have mkii. Sorry. I should mentioned it.

Xan.

footnotes are now flushed completely differently; in mkii (and previous

layers) kind of frozen; in mkiv we now store them in their original form
which means that later on they can reflow in whatever way they want

in the future i can consider storing some more more info (in this case
layers) with the note but we need to be carefull with it; providing a
quick solution has not my preference as it cripples the code

[NTG-context] Beta version 2009.05.27 16:26, \footnote and \section

2009-05-27 Thread Otared Kavian

Hi Hans,

The issue I reported some time ago regarding \scetion and \footnote
with mkiv, is still there:
mkiv, LuaTeX version 40, LuaTeX revision 1, (LuaTeX date stamp
2009050813),

ConTeXt version 2009.05.27 16:26.

The issue is as follows:
the text of the \footnote used in the title of a \section does not
show up at the bottom of the page: here is a minimal test:

%%% begin example
\starttext

\section{Testing a section\footnote{Actually for testing footnotes in
the title of a section\dots}} % This footnote does not show up

\startitemize

\item test\footnote{This is a silly remark\dots}

\item test\footnote{This is a silly remark, inside an item\dots}

\stopitemize

test\footnote{This is another silly remark but outside items\dots}

 end example

Hi Hans,

I noticed that a small issue is still there with \scetion \footnote
with mkiv,
ConTeXt  ver: 2009.05.20 00:02 MKIV  fmt: 2009.5.20  int: english/
english

The text of the \footnote used in the title of a \section does not
show up at the bottom of the page: here is a minimal test:

%%% begin example
\starttext

\section{Testing a section\footnote{Actually for testing footnotes in
the title of a section\dots}}

\startitemize

\item test\footnote{This is a silly remark\dots}

\item test\footnote{This is a silly remark, inside an item\dots}

\stopitemize

The other issues with \fotnote are now solved, as far as I can say
with my bug-testing…

[NTG-context] footnote numbers size in heads

2009-04-29 Thread Horacio Suarez

Hello all:

using defaults setings, footnote numbers size in heads are too big.

I usually use

\chapter{Capitulo 1\switchtobodyfont[9]\footnote{texto del
footnote}\switchtobodyfont[11]}

and works fine.

But if I have a chapter head with a footnote in the middle:

\chapter{Capitulo 1\switchtobodyfont[9]\footnote{texto del
footnote}\switchtobodyfont[11] continua el titulo}

the result is not correct.

How can I fix this?

tahnkyou in adavance.

ok, i can catch that error; the footnote is still not visible due to the
fact that it's too deeply nested in a box (tex feature, unrelated to
context); you can use postponefootes cum suis to catch that to some extend

--
1. First level footnote[1]
2. Another one

  --
  1. Second level footnote.

Currently the footnote will just go after the parent one.

Thanks! Any idea how to indent the subfootnote list?
I tried 'before=\hskip0.05\textwidth', but then the rule gone away,
'indenting=big' doesn't have any effect and things like:

before=\bigskip\hrule width 0.25\textwidth\medskip\hskip0.05\textwidth

You need the description env. for footnote to change the left margin.

\setupnote
  [subfootnote]
  [rule=\vbox{\hskip\dimexpr1em+1pt\relax\blackrule[width=.
2\hsize,height=\noteparameter{rulethickness},depth=0pt]}]

\setupnotedefinition
  [subfootnote]
  [width=1em,

[NTG-context] how to color footnote?

... while dealing with colored elements:

having the footnote number (down in front of the footnote text) in
dark green is not that bad, just, why can't it be colored in an other
way?

I tried in vain both in \setupfootnotes and \setupfootnotedefinition:
numbercolor, color...
Only \setupfootnotes[textcolor=magenta] affects the footnote number in
the main text.

But nothing changes in the footnote area.

Does this make sense?

Only the number of the note in front of the footnote text always gets

This distinction I didn't expect.

[NTG-context] no linebreak before footnote after vertical line

2008-08-13 Thread Steffen Wolfrum
Hi,

to prevent long abbreviations from being hyphenated I use the vertical
line. That's fine in most cases.
Only, bad luck if there is a footnote following and this at the end of
the line:

bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla
bla bla bla |WikiPOBia|\footnote{note}.

Is there a general solution to avoid this bad coincidence?

Actually, you are misusing the || command. It is supposed to be
used to explicitly *allow* breaking at the left of the first and
at the right of the second |. The fact that the inbetween text
does not hyphenate is a side-effect, not the main feature.

Best wishes,

 well, I meant a more general solution, like tuning up the vertikal
 line to a no hyphen inbetween and no linebreak afterwards -
 character?!

 Actually, you are misusing the || command. It is supposed to be
 used to explicitly *allow* breaking at the left of the first and
 at the right of the second |. The fact that the inbetween text
 does not hyphenate is a side-effect, not the main feature.

oh.

... that's why!

HI,

I had similar trouble in my rather big document.
It seemed to appear randomly. Sometimes it disappeared when I changed fonts or
added some blank lines before problematic part.

Finally I found that all my problems disappear when I avoid using these tables

replacing them by http://wiki.contextgarden.net/TABLE

So ... if you use tables

[NTG-context] Detail on footnote placement (vertical, page)

2007-08-02 Thread Steffen Wolfrum
Hi,

if, at the last page of a chapter, there is only little text (e.g.
10% of text-height)
is it then possible to attach the footnote-rule and the footnote-text
directly under the text
(but only this page – the other pages should place the footnote-text
flush-bottom)
in order to avoid a huge empty white space between body-text and
footnote-text?

[NTG-context] additional footnote (quite late)

2007-03-02 Thread Steffen Wolfrum
Hi,

sometimes – just before the printer heats up his machine – there is something
important too add, but yet the footnote-numbering can't be changed anymore (see
example below please):

\starttext

First sentence.\footnote{First footnote} Something added\footnote[-]{In-between
footnote}. Second sentence.\footnote{Second footnote}

\stoptext

Do you know a reliable way to make footnote In-between footnote labeled 1a
(in text and page end)?

[NTG-context] split footnote bug

2007-02-26 Thread Steffen Wolfrum
Hi,

it seems this thread got lost.
For it describes a quite ugly phenomenon I dare to post it again again.

Please, have a look at this 3-page example:

\newdimen\XVertikal \XVertikal=12pt
\setupbodyfont[postscript,10pt] \setupinterlinespace[line=\XVertikal]

\setuplayout
[width=113mm,height=48\XVertikal,
backspace=20mm,topspace=15mm,
header=\XVertikal,headerdistance=0.5\XVertikal,
footer=3.5\XVertikal,footerdistance=0pt,
location=middle,marking=on,grid=yes]

\showframe \showgrid \showgridboxes \showstruts

\starttext
\dorecurse{10}{\input ward\footnote{\input tufte \relax}}
\stoptext

On page 2 the bottom most line slips down lower than on the other pages.
I observed this behavior in a 450 pages book and the amount the bottom line
goes down when footnotes a split is always the same.

Is this because of unhappy values in setuplayout or is it a bug?

Re: [NTG-context] split footnote bug

2007-02-26 Thread Steffen Wolfrum
The bug seems independent of the values in \setuplayout.
See this really minimal example, look at page 2:

\showframe \showgrid
\starttext

\dorecurse{8}{\input tufte\footnote{\input ward \input tufte \relax}}
\stoptext

Steffen

(To Taco: even playing with \topskip doesn't help. The down-slipping stays.)

Re: [NTG-context] split footnote bug

2007-02-26 Thread Steffen Wolfrum
As there was no reply at all on this thread I got in fear that the slipping
last line of a split footnote is a basic TeX bug, well known and maybe
inevitable?!

So I tried to reproduce the same situation in LaTeX (as I don't know the plain
TeX equivalent):

\documentclass[11pt]{article}

\begin{document}

\input tufte \input ward\footnote{\input ward \input tufte \relax}

\input tufte \input ward\footnote{\input ward \input tufte \relax}

\input tufte \input ward\footnote{\input ward \input tufte \relax}

\end{document}

Good news: this works! So it seems only to be a ConTeXt internal bug, and not
part of the TeX core.

Hans, it's your turn :o)

[NTG-context] Footnote bug(?) with columns and vertical stretch

2007-02-07 Thread Ricard Roca
Hi to all,

With \start/\stopcolumns (not columnsets) footnotes work well if grid is
enabled. If grid is not enabled and vertical stretch is wanted, with

\setupalign[height]
\setupinterlinespace[stretch=some value]

footnotes disappear. It remains the reference mark in the middle of the
text and the space left at the end of the column, but there is no
footnote. Changing
\setupfootnotes[location=columns, page, etc] does nothing, but endnotes
do work.

Is this a bug?

Thanks in advance,

Ricard Roca

[NTG-context] Footnote in columns/sets?

2007-01-31 Thread Michal Kvasnicka
Good evening.

Since I've got no answer, I date to resent my question once more, and
even to add to it.

I typeset a document in two columns on the grid. I use both columns, and
columnsets. I place footnotes in the lastcolumn.

  \setupfootnotes
[rule=off, way=bypage, location=lastcolumn, conversion=set 3]
  \setupfootnotedefinition
[location=left, width=fit, hang=1]

1) How can I set interlinespace to a smaller distance? (I don't care that
the footnote lines would not be on the grid---I prefer it to a very
loose interlinespace.) I guess that there is better way than to write

  \footnote{\setupinterlinespace[line=9pt] ...\par}

Moreover, it doesn't work well since on the first line is apparently
inserted a strut.

2) In columnsets, the footnotes appear in the column where they are
referenced, not in the last (the second) column. How can I force it to
the second column?

Many thanks for your answers.
M.K.

[NTG-context] footnotes and footnote markers on SPREAD

2007-01-18 Thread Steffen Wolfrum
Hi,

there seems to be a rule that footnotes and footnote markers have to
be kept on the same page -- even if there stays a lot of white space
at the bottom.

Is there also a kind of penalties to modify the rule like this:
Keeping on the same page would be best, but on the same SPREAD is
fine enough?!

Hi Aditya,

I've run with your patch for a while. It fixes the missing
footnote problem and I haven't noticed it causing any new
problems.

While you're on a winning streak, perhaps you'd like to look
at another problem in the same area? When \quotation is used
instead of \startquotation a footnote number is skipped:

\starttext
\setupquotation[right={''\footnote{First}}]

This happens with or without your \rightdelimitedtextmark

Hi Taco,

I assume you're referring to this thread:
http://archive.contextgarden.net/thread/20061206.202611.e8722446.en.html

However that was a more complicated test case because it involved
the bib module and cite. Also it referred to problems with
footnotes in vertical mode whereas the new test case includes
the footnote in setupdelimitedtext/right where it appears to be in
horizontal mode. In fact the new test case is similar to the
workaround actually suggested in:
http://archive.contextgarden.net/message/20061203.141335.f50b33ff.en.html

Changing just \MyMagic in the suggested workaround to avoid \cite gives:
  \definedelimitedtext
[myquotation]
[left={\symbol[leftquotation]},
 right={\symbol[rightquotation]\MyMagic},
 leftmargin=standard]
  \long\def\startcitedquotation[#1]#2\stopcitedquotation
{\bgroup
 \def\MyMagic{~\footnote{#1}}
 \startmyquotation #2\stopmyquotation
 \egroup}
  \starttext
  \startcitedquotation[schmitz2006]
  overly beautiful pusillanimous sesquipedalian longwinded
  \stopcitedquotation
  \stoptext

- which also loses the footnote.

The thread included another possible workaround at:
http://archive.contextgarden.net/message/20061204.095032.227c83ef.en.html
- but that lost all the power of setupdelimitedtext.

Therefore I suggest that my simple test case is still worthy of
consideration:
  \starttext
  \setupquotation[right={''\footnote{First}}]
  \startquotation
  Loses footnote.
  \stopquotation

  \setupquotation[right={''}]
  \quotation{OK}\footnote{Second}
  \stoptext

For those who need footnoted or cited quotations, another workaround
is to \setupquotation[location=text]. This retains the power of
\setupdelimitedtext without running into the bug which I suspect lies
in or near \dostopdelimitedtexpar. You may have to fiddle with \par
and/or \nospace to get the layout exactly as desired.

[NTG-context] Footnote Setup

2006-09-06 Thread Pepe Barbe
Hi,

I would like to setup the footnotes so that the footnote in the
textbody shows slanted (or just different) to the rest of the text and
in sans serif, to avoid some confusion with exponents.

So far what I have tried, does not seem to work. In setupfoonotes,
style and numbercommand seem to only affect the style for the footnote
at the bottom of the page, but not the footnote inside the textbody.

Any ideas on how to achieve this?

Re: [NTG-context] Space between footnote number and text

2006-05-29 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I felt a little bad about asking everyone else to do my work for me, so I did take a stab at solving my footnote line-break issue :). I came up with something that seems to work, but I'm not sure it is the simplest or best way to do it. Basically, I used something from your last post (the \specialcommand) to turn off the default footnote number completely and instead include the footnote number as part of the footnote text:
% Create a counter that will act as our footnote labels\newcounter\MyFootnoteLabel
% Create a special command to turn off the default footnote number\def\TurnOffDefFootNum#1{}
% Set up footnoting in paragraph form (n=0) with no default footnote number\setupfootnotes[n=0,way=bypage,numbercommand=\TurnOffDefFootNum]
% Create macro to replace standard footnote macro. This macro will include% the footnote number as part of the footnote text so that we can keep it from% getting split onto a different line from the footnote text\def\fnote#1{\footnote[\MyFootnoteLabel]{\note[\MyFootnoteLabel]~#1}\increment\MyFootnoteLabel}
% Test with some output\starttext
Now\fnote{Footnote number one} %is\fnote{Footnote number two} %the\fnote{Footnote number three} %time\fnote{Footnote number four} %for\fnote{Footnote number five} %all\fnote{Footnote number six} %good\fnote{Footnote number seven} %men\fnote{Footnote number eight} %to\fnote{Footnote number nine} %come\fnote{Footnote number ten} %to\fnote{Footnote number eleven} %the\fnote{Footnote number twelve} %aid\fnote{Footnote number thirteen} %of\fnote{Footnote number fourteen} %their\fnote{Footnote number fifteen} %country.\fnote{Footnote number sixteen} %
\stoptext
I put a non-breaking space in this example, but it seems to work with no space there as well. It is hard to get a number to split on purpose anyway, but I found that by successively adding"i" characters to any footnote text, I could eventually cause the next footnote to leave its number on one line and its text on the next. However, after the above, the first word of the footnote text seems to stay with the footnote number regardless, which is what I wanted.
I would be interested in knowing though if there is a simpler solution.
Also, any idea what might be causing some whole footnotes to appear on, say, page 11, when the text that references the footnote is on page 10? Is this something I just have to fix by tweaking my main text?

Thank you for the response! Here is what I found. The code you suggested...

...actually produced *more* space between the footnote number and the text of the footnote. However, I removed the three tilde (~~~) characters and I got *no* space between the footnote number and text, which is what I wanted to achieve.
A couple of other questions though:
1) My footnotes sometimes still "break" in that the footnote number will be at the end of a line and the footnote text at the beginning of the next line. I tried putting one of the non-breaking space (~) tilde characters back in, just to see if that would prevent the break. However, it *does not* prevent the break...the footnote number and text are still separated. Is there any way to force footnote numbers to be on the same line as the first word of the footnote?
2) Sometimes the last few footnote numbers in the body of my main text appear with a small arrow next to them. These footnotes end up on the next page of text rather than on the page where they are referenced. What is the best solution to this type of thing?
3) Is there a way to turn off hyphenation in the main body of my text, such as with "\nohyphens", but turn *on* hyphenation in the text of the footnotes. My main text is ancient Greek, while my footnotes are mostly English. The Greek is hard to read if it is hyphenated, but I get much better formatting in the footnotes if hyphenation is turned on.
Thanks for the help. I am much closer to what I want now.

[NTG-context] Footnote Formatting

2006-05-26 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I am new to ConTeXt and have two questions about footnote formatting.
I have noticed that there is always a space between the footnote number and the actual text of the footnote. My first question is: How can I eliminate this space or at the very least replace the space with a non-breaking space. On my system, the footnote numbers sometimes appear at the end of a line while the footnote text wraps around to the next line.
Also, I am formatting my footnotes with \setupfootnotes[n=0,...] so that they appear at the bottom of the page in paragraph form (i.e., not one footnote per line). Due to a section change in the document, I may restart footnote numbering at "1" in the middle of a page. When this happens, I would like to indent footnote #1 just like you would indent a paragraph. My second question is: Can this be done?
Any help offered will be greatly appreciated!

 Hello,

 I'm facing two problems. The first one has to do with the
 fact that if I use \color[darkblue]{\chapter{Capitulo 1}}
 the line with \setuphead[chapter][header=empty]
  seems to
 be ignored because the chapter page gets the header too.
 I'v attached an example in the file capitulo-cores.tex.

 Use

 \bgroup
 \setuphead[chapter][color=darkblue]
 \chapter{Capitulo 1}
 \egroup

 or

 \start
 \setuphead[chapter][color=darkblue]
 \chapter{Capitulo 1}
 \stop

or

\definehead[alternativechapter][chapter]
\setuphead[alternativechapter][color=darkblue]

\alternativechapter{Capitulo N}
