Yes. I don't remember whether I already complained about it or not, but here's another (minimal) example to reproduce it: \starttext \startformula a+b=\int_{i=0}^{\infty}\Gamma\,dx \stopformula \stoptext The main problem (besides being quite slow for the default LM) is that font loading in ConTeXt+XeTeX now does the following: if (FontName is a valid font) then use FontName else use [FontName] end And that one forgets the third possibility: about the old tfm fonts which should be loaded without any quotes, for example rm-lmr12 \font\a=rm-lmr12 works, but \font\a=rm-lmr12 at 12pt doesn't, and ConTeXt tries to use that one. Normally TeX would stop: generate and report the error at that point, but ConTeXt currently skips those errors on purpose and tries to use an unexisting font, so it results in a broken PDF. i will send you a patch (yet another test for a spec -) Hans - Hans Hagen | PRAGMA ADE Ridderstraat 27 | 8061 GH Hasselt | The Netherlands tel: 038 477 53 69 | fax: 038 477 53 74 | www.pragma-ade.com | www.pragma-pod.nl - __ _ If your question is of interest to others as well, please add an entry to the Wiki! maillist : ntg-context@ntg.nl / http://www.ntg.nl/mailman/listinfo/ ntg-context webpage : http://www.pragma-ade.nl / http://tex.aanhet.net archive : https://foundry.supelec.fr/projects/contextrev/ wiki : http://contextgarden.net __ _ -- Andrea Valle -- CIRMA - DAMS Università degli Studi di Torino -- http://www.cirma.unito.it/andrea/ -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- I did this interview where I just mentioned that I read Foucault. Really thanks a lot Mojca for the help. I replaced the two files, I found two copies of font-ini.tex and replaced them all. [NTG-context] bibtex startup
Dear all, I'd like use bibtex support. It's my first time in ConTeXt I took a look at the wiki: http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Bibliography but cannot understand exactly. 1. I created a bibTest.bib file containing: __ %% Created for Andrea Valle at 2007-10-02 17:37:21 +0200 %% Saved with string encoding Western (ASCII) @article{trezegol, Author = {Trezeguet, David}, Date-Added = {2007-10-02 17:32:32 +0200}, Date-Modified = {2007-10-02 17:37:19 +0200}, Journal = {Soccer International Journal}, Title = {How to score}, Year = {2007}} __ 2. I created in the same folder a bibTest.tex file with this: \usemodule[bib] \usemodule[bibltx] \setupbibtex[database=xampl] \starttext As \cite[trezegol] already indicated, bibtex is a \LaTeX-centric program. \completepublications \stoptext 3. I compiled following the three steps indicated by the wiki texexec --once bibTest bibtex bibTest texexec bibTest Following the example, I have not indicated explicitly in the tex file the name of the biblio file. I guest it is implied by the tex file name (or not?) In any case, I'm having this as a ref (Xx, ) plus a new page with Reference intuitively empty. What am I missing? Re: [NTG-context] bibtex startup
Thanks Arthur. No words needed. I totally agree with you. It's that I was confused by the xampl.bib. I didn't understand it was just an example file (oh well, I should have suspected, indeed...). I guest it is implied by the tex file name (or not?) It's not. Look at the output by texexec: it tries to open xampl.bib. Just replace it with the actual name of the bib file. There would be no real point in making the name of the bib file depend on the name of the ConTeXt file you process: the aim of bib files is to hold a database of all your references so that you could share it between all your documents; you could even have a huge list of all the books you would ever refer to. So of course you can split them into different categories but it does not really make sense to have one bib file for each ConTeXt document. [NTG-context] encoding/compiling issues (macosx)
Hi to all, we (I and Miriam, who is in CC, but she should be now on the list) are setting up our ConTeXt installation in order to (re-)typeset the academic journal we are editors. We are both on macosx: the idea is to use XeTeX. I installed on Miriam's macbook mactex, and I also have updated it from the mactex site. Exactly like mine. We're experiencing this problem: we have an utf 8 text and I'm compiling with no problem on my machine. On Miriam's one 1. if we compile with ConTeXt-pdftex (specifying the regime) we are having little black boxes near the non-ascii char (i.e. an accented glyph is rendered as non accented glyph + box) 2. if we compile with XeConTeXt the resulting pdf simply skips the accents (e.g an accented glyph is rendered non accented) More: We can't do ctxtools --updatecontext it complaint it cannot fetch the zip Differences: 1. I am on macbook pro, she's on macbook (both on 2007 intel) 2. I'm using the English version of the macosx system, she's using the Italian one. Re: [NTG-context] encoding/compiling issues (macosx)
Thanks Mojca, sorry for the late reply but we had to test together. The problem is that your utf-8 text doesn't use normal eacute, but rather e + combining acute accant, and pdfTeX will never be able to handle that. Ok, understood, good to know it. TeX needs accent specification before the character. A combining accent after the character cannot be handled, at least not in pdfTeX - XeTeX and LuaTeX should be fine with it. Voilà, here's the problem. We're having different behaviors usign XeTeX, while ConTeXt works the same on thwo machines. My XeConTeXt works ok. The one on Miriam's machine not. Can you try to convert the text again using pdftotext -enc UTF-8 your-pdf-document.pdf and copy that text into the main document? We have already done it. This solved the problems with accented glyphs but not with other glyphs (apostrpohes, dots) 2. if we compile with XeConTeXt the resulting pdf simply skips the accents (e.g an accented glyph is rendered non accented) The default font (LM) doesn't work properly with any version of ConTeXt prior to 2007.09.28. But if you load some system font, the accents should work OK. Ah! that's exactly so. We are experiencing the difference: the problem disappears with system fonts. If you are using XeTeX, I strongly recommend you to use both the same version of ConTeXt. The one from January and the one form September differ considerably. Ok. [NTG-context] xml misc
Hi to all, I' ve started playing with xml -- context. I've read the docs but even if I am able to do some very basic operation I'm in troubles doing my first real experiment. I've already generated a book from the collection of html help files of the SuperCollider language using a cumbersome python script. But I was guessing that probably using xml mapping would make my life easier. An example file to be processed is here: http://supercollider.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/supercollider/trunk/ build/Help/Style%20Guide/Documentation%20Style%20Guide.html?view=log The html is w3c compliant and being automatically generated seems to be consistent. I'm able to do easily stuff like this, which is a promising start: \startenvironment scEnv \enableregime[utf] \defineXMLenvironment [body] \starttext \stoptext %\defineXMLenvironment [style] \starthiding \stophiding \defineXMLcommand [p] \par \defineXMLgrouped [b] \bf \stopenvironment But: 1. how do I simply skip undesired tags? The \start-\stophiding trick (which in any case does not work: why?) was a hack in order to not typeset the stile tags 2. how can i map class attributes in order to specify for each of them e.g fontname, points, color, indenting? See http://codespeak.net/lxml/ lxml_in_python implements also full xpath/xslt An example file to be processed is here: Please ,if you can, consider luatex+context mkiv; in base folder see l-xml-edu.lua lxml-ini.lua lxml-ini.tex l-xml.lua (warning : lxml here has nothing to do with lxml in python, only the same names) I believe that actually lxml_in_luatex does not implements a full xpath/xslt, because not always these are useful in this context. (If I need a full xpath/xslthere here, then I have a too much complex xml document, and I preprocessing it with lxml_in_python) With lxml_in_python_ and lxml_in_luatex_ you can solve all ** reasonable ** problems. Re: [NTG-context] Doc to ConTeXt [was Re: HTML to ConTeXt]
Hi to all (Idris, in particular, as we are always dealing with the same problems... ), I just want to share some thoughts about the ol' damn' problem of converting to ConTeXt from Word et al. As I told Andrea: For relatively simple documents (like the kind we use in academic journals) it seems we can now 1) convert doc to odt using OOo 2) convert odt to markdown using As suggest by Idris, I subscribed to the pandoc list, but I have to say that the activity is not exactly like the one on ConTeXt list... So the actual support for ConTeXt conversion is not convincing. More, it's always better to put the hands on your machine... My problem is to convert a series of academic journals in ConTeXt. They come form the Humanities so little structure (basically, mainly body and footnotes). Far from me the idea of automatically doing all the stuff, I'd like to be faster and more accurate in conversion. (No particular interest in figures, they are few, not so much in references: they tends to be typographically inconsistent if done in a WYSISYG environment, so difficult to parse). More, as the journal has already being published we need to work with final pdfs. After wasting my time with an awful pdf to html converter by Acrobat, I discovered this, you may all know: http://pdftohtml.sourceforge.net/ The html conversion is very very good in resulting rendering and also in sources, but after some tweakings I got interested in the xml conversion it allows. The xml format substantially encodes the infos related to page, typically each line is an element. Plus, there are bold and italics marked easily as b and i I'm still struggling to understand something really operative of XML processing in ConTeXt, so I switched back to Python. I used an incremental sax parser with some replacement. This is today's draft. Original: http://www.semiotiche.it/andrea/membrana/02%20imp.pdf Recomposed (no setup at all, only \enableregime[utf]): http://www.semiotiche.it/andrea/membrana/02imp.pdf pdf -- pdftoxml -- xml -- python script -- tex -- pdf I recovered par, bold, em, footnotes, stripping dashes and reassembling the text with footnote references. Not bad as a first step. I guess that you xml gurus could probably do much easier and cleaner. So, I mean -just for my very specific needs, I con probably take word sources, convert to pdf and then finally reach ConTeXt as discussed. Just some ideas to share with the list Best -a- -- Andrea Valle -- CIRMA - DAMS Università degli Studi di Torino -- http://www.cirma.unito.it/andrea/ -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- I did this interview where I just mentioned that I read Foucault. Re: [NTG-context] referencing footnotes in another place
(Ah well, I'm a recordman for typos...:-)) I was thinking too about the database approach, but a system of replacements would be enough for my needs. It would allow me to organize better the source files. OTOH for large projects this could get a bit unwieldy and unmanageable. Yes, that's true. But I was thinking about e.g. an article with long footnotes Better in my view is to use an editor that supports folding, use a \start-stopfootnote macro, and fold them out of site when not needed (I have this in the Notepad++ setup). This is a possibility, indeed Another idea is a lua script that texexec could use to label and/or move all the notes to a separate database for analyses or other processing. Of course it would be interesting for critical editions. My main concern was not so advanced. The separation between body text and footnotes is the only thing I miss from wysisyg. By reading the source :) Joking of course ... but not entirely. Yes, that's an important point. Many times the options I'm searching for are not documented: so, or I'm able to find an example in wiki/ mailing list or probably it would be easy to take a look to the sources, I guess. I know it's far from being polite, but really I'd like to have a How- to-find-your-way-thru-the-source Tutorial for total newbie. On my mac, they are hidden: so, first step, change your visualization preferences thru a googled script form Terminal. Second, the (in) famous tex tree structure is far from being clear for me. Third, and most important, how to extract infos from sources? A book is not at all a repository of code or a reference. It can be foundational, and in that case you'll just keep on reading for many years. [NTG-context] distro info
Hi to all, I've briefly presented ConTeXt to the students of my course in Visual Identities. They were all enthusiastic. So they asked me if I can give an introductory but real seminar. At my lab the students are all on macosx 10.4/5. Now the probem: All my students comes from humanities, no computer science background at all. I cannot ask them to be aware of low level installation aspects. My ideal would be something like the standard ConTeXt I was working with an year ago. One installs MacTeX and can start working. Now, we need easy font switching. I'm actually using XeTeX. But it has been complicated to set it up. I don't think I can have my students dig into installations (patch this etc). You will be able to use PreferencePane to select whether you want to use MacTeX or ConTeXt minimals (and which version), and that will be done globally. /usr/texbin will be a symlink to binaries. Re: [NTG-context] Fwd: (scientific) poster
Concerning posters (at least that graphic category of posters): If you have to move a graphic element by hand in search of fine tuning (which is optical in design, helas, not computational) the only way in batch-processing based sw is to re-compile, many and many times. Such a process can be quite slow if you have a large format with high res images. So you pass a considerable part of your time looking and the console. This result in unfavouring fine optical tuning. So, the problem for me is not the result but the process. -a- On 13 Jun 2008, at 15:40, Alan BRASLAU wrote: I have to say that for poster stuff where you have to control visually the layout a GUI is not that bad. Re: [NTG-context] distro info
If if you got it installed, you next will need a GUI for running ConTeXt, and if some problem arises, you are further away from the solution than ever. :-( Sorry, you can't use TeX in a decent way if you can't use a shell (AKA command line AKA Terminal AKA DOS box). That's not true. Installing mactex doesn't require you to use terminal. It comes with TeXShop. Works out of the box. That was my first ConTeXt experience. Positive. Then I went into some memory problems with MetaPost, then I had to modify some sources (thanks to Mojca) to work with XeTeX. Really a boring experience. Please don't tell me that the tree structure of the TeX distro is easy to understand and traverse. Please everyone try to become computer literate! (see also works by Friedrich Kittler) I agree with you. But it depends on what computer literate means. For me computer science is the science of algorithms (see the definition of Schneider and Gersting). So, I'm interested in a higher level perspective. Otherwise, I could start from assembler. Note also that I'm always teaching computer programming to students in humanities. I'm asking them big steps into computer literacy. But I cannot exaggerate. I'm teaching them SuperCollider and Nodebox. I'd like to teach ConTeXt focusing in computational typography, not into unix file system (even if it can be very relevant). Note also that from the previous posts I still have not exactly understood what I have to do to install Luatex (the famous minimals), and it seems that many people are confused like me on using system fonts. I'm scared of tweaking my actual XeConTeXt distro because to install it has been a pain. Of course, everyone on the mailing list here is very friendly and helpful, but I'd like not to bore you all with install troubles. Actually, I strongly disagree with the opinion that the only way to properly interact with TeX is via the command line. In fact you gain a lot when trying to track down a problem ... Furthermore, in my humble opinion interaction with TeX should concentrate on programming the actual typesettin You took the words out of my mouth :-) Jokes apart, I think it's evident that there are two approaches to deal with a distro/application. I'm just defending my position, without implying that the other one is inferior/negative/etc. I just want to point out that to have a context distro wrapped into a mac app (i.e. autonomous, self-contained) will make the life easier for many users. Re: [NTG-context] distro info
What I said is: you can provide all the GUI tools you want, at some point (and this will be rather sooner than later) problems will crop up, and these problems will be impossible to resolve if you don't want to use the command line, don't want to learn about PATH settings, don't want to learn about where configuration files go and what they do. Thomas, I do not know what Oliver is actually doing. But just 2c: - suppose you have a ConTeXt distro (the minimal) inside a mac app. At the end a mac app is typically a folder containing different programs/libraries etc - suppose you are provided inside the app of an editor (say, TeXShop) already configured to read in the app's folder. In sum, you have a TeXShop ready to go for the ConTeXt in the app. Then, you have a context distro working out of the box. It can be installed easily. You have always worked with Word and you want to try to work with ConTeXt? Download, drag and drop, open. There shouldn't been configuration problems (they have been solved while creating the installer). If there are bugs depending on ConTeXt, as usual in case of an app, the user has to wait for a next release of the app including the new ConTeXt version. (with a bit more expertise, maybe you can simply replace the right folder inside the mac app) This is indeed a limit, but the previous points can be pros for another user. colorful pointy-clicky interface. Not so much colorful, not so much pointy-clicky. Just local, self-contained, with an editor. No? Re: [NTG-context] distro info
Furthermore let me doubt that a simplified installation it's enough to persuade new users since ConTeXt requires manuals reading which is universally considered a waste of time. Hmm, Diego, that's not the point IMHO. We have to decouple installation from use. I'm an example of a user who will appreciate a simplified installer and will keep reading manuals (Matthias seems to agree with me). It's an interesting thread, but at the end I'm convinced that, simply, we are in a do-cracy. If Oliver has time, he will release an installer for mac. Otherwise, Andrea Valle will simply keep complaining. Obviously, Hans has more important things to do (I'm pretty serious here). Thanks Charles A praise from the heart to the devs. Wouldn't be possibile to support font selection like in XeTeX? This would make thing really a lot easier for sublunar users like me. Really, the whole process it's damn' complicated: no one a part 2 or 3 seems to know the details :) Best -a- On 28 Jun 2008, at 19:55, Charles P. Schaum wrote: This first bit differentiates a backend that refers to your font and a frontend that you normally work with. Why? Macros, macros, macros. Let's put it this way: You could have a myriad of styles. That's what many in the WYSIWYG world do. Then ... they have to keep track of them all. But TeX, as a Turing-complete programming language that could theoretically be used for lots of things, has the design of local redefinition, so that sans within a group or a macro can be redefined to something other than delicious without you needing to worry about keeping track of global style changes. In short, like the Unix small is beautiful philosophy (and good programming) you make parts of your document that work, you put the working parts together, and the whole thing should have a good shot at working. It will also be remarkably consistent and behave in a manner that is more regular than, for example, Word's typesetting engine. For example, when working with InDesign/InCopy and importing things from Word, there's a difference between character style mappings and local overrides. Word processors usually employ local overrides. That means usually the typesetting engine picks from the alternative of a font face for bold, italic, and so on, or it takes the default face and changes its rasterization to create a faux bold, italic, and so on. In good typesetting, however, you actually link character styles with actual fonts, just like you would when hand-compositing blocks of type in a typecase with lots of clamps and so on. This bit looks like what character styles do in InDesign.
